happy 4th of July club members Eddie and
0:06
I are going to share with y'all today
0:09
our version of a flag cake and you know
0:12
what I've got I've got a confession to
0:15
make I've never made a flag cake I you
0:18
know what I think I have have you really
0:21
yeah like maybe when I was in high
0:23
school that blue looks so pretty on you
0:25
thank you you got a few strings but
0:27
other than that you're like perfect
0:31
oh well here let me get these scissors
0:34
cuz I will keep looking at that there
0:37
you go now your slap cab perfect that
0:40
blue is so pretty with your coloring
0:43
thank you all right so I've never made
0:45
one Eddie has thank goodness you know
0:48
most people and you see a lot of them
0:50
around the 4th of July but you see them
0:52
making them with blueberries and
0:55
strawberries that's what I've done have
0:57
you yeah that's well you know that fruit
1:00
uh can ripen pretty quick and it can run
1:03
so I thought you know I don't I don't
1:05
think I want to go the fruit
1:07
route so I found some other things that
1:10
I think will work very very well uh I
1:14
got the idea about
1:16
Twizzlers you know that I like that rope
1:20
licorice I think it's going to be a
1:22
little big though but I found these
1:25
candies it's like a rope candy filled
1:28
with some kind of nougat oh it's really
1:31
sweet and tart it is it's sweet and tart
1:34
cuz it was made by Sweet Tart right
1:36
that's right that's right and then I
1:39
found these little blue candies I mean
1:42
it's so everything is going to be
1:46
edible
1:47
okay yeah it's got a chocolate Center
1:51
and they're good so that's going to be
1:53
the blue in our flag all right I'm going
1:57
to show y'all how I doctor up a box cake
2:03
mix um you know for a Fourth of July
2:07
cake I don't want to go to all the
2:09
trouble of you know making a cake from
2:13
scratch I'm going to put my energy in
2:15
trying to recreate that flag so I'm
2:18
using a white cake
2:20
mix and I don't go by the instructions
2:23
on the
2:24
box I use four eggs it calls for three I
2:29
always had an extra egg and we got lucky
2:33
I've got a little chicken that will laid
2:35
some real large eggs and one of our eggs
2:38
was a double yolk so we got twice the
2:41
bang for our buck for that chicken like
2:44
a duck egg on yeah I know so we got five
2:48
yolks in here and Eddie if you want to
2:50
take your mixer and start mixing
2:53
it as I add the ingredients uh now I do
2:58
add uh like a third of a cup cup of O
3:01
that's what it calls for so I do do that
3:04
and for the water I always use
3:07
buttermilk I was out of Buttermilk this
3:09
morning so I'm just going to use a a
3:12
whole a
3:13
[Music]
3:14
whole milk not
3:18
2% not skim but just the regular whole
3:21
whole
3:23
milk
3:25
and I always add vanilla flavoring some
3:29
kind of some kind of
3:31
flavoring
3:33
um sometimes I'll use the coconut
3:36
flavoring sometimes I'll use orange you
3:39
know it's just whatever I'm in the mood
3:41
for so since it's just a white cake you
3:45
can really do um any kind of any kind of
3:50
flavoring you
3:52
want vanilla is always in order now
3:55
we'll want to beat that for a couple of
3:57
minutes now while Eddie's doing that
4:01
I'm going
4:02
to show you the pan that I chose to make
4:07
the cake in uh this
4:10
is one of my cake pans that um I bought
4:16
this I think I was making a wedding cake
4:17
and I needed different layers so you can
4:21
make it in a 13x9 by two or a 15 by 10
4:25
you know you can make it in any shape
4:27
you want but I thought the round cake
4:30
with a rectangle flag would be fun so
4:33
you want to make
4:35
sure that you spray your
4:38
pan very very good because you going to
4:42
have to bring this cake out of here in
4:46
one solid piece so you want to make
4:49
sure it uh does not stick and if you're
4:54
worried about it I I use a wax paper or
4:57
parchment paper and I'll just cut cut
5:00
out my paper the size of my cake pan so
5:05
if you're scared you can do that all
5:08
right on positively Paula one day I made
5:12
like a rainbow cake so I thought well
5:16
that'll be fun for my fourth of July
5:18
cake uh to do it like red white and blue
5:22
so that's good Eddie so what we yeah
5:25
what we want to do
5:27
now is divine up our
5:31
batter into like
5:36
thirds
5:38
so like a third
5:42
there a third
5:46
here and we
5:50
can we could just leave it in this bowl
5:53
but if you want me to transfer it to a
5:55
clear Bowl I will and that way we can
5:58
see if we've got it divided you know
6:01
pretty
6:03
easily this is a fun correctly I mean
6:06
not easy this is a fun cake and it's
6:09
something that my grand boys love
6:12
helping me
6:14
with okay so that looks pretty even I
6:17
might
6:18
have might have shorted that one just a
6:20
little
6:22
bit all right so here comes the fun part
6:25
we're going to leave one
6:27
white but then we're you're going to
6:30
color one
6:32
blue and one
6:37
red sometimes red can look pinky too
6:42
so I want to use a good bit
6:45
of coloring for that it's a deep color
6:49
though
6:50
yeah have you ever made like Greek
6:52
Easter eggs that deep deep red I I never
6:56
never no how do you do that I don't know
6:59
I've never gotten how they made them
7:00
that red what dye they use H well they's
7:05
all kind of dyes out there
7:08
now all right so let me find a
7:13
spoon a good spoon like a big spoon
7:19
oh well let's see yeah a big spoon
7:29
yeah look in that drawer over there
7:31
Eddie how about like an ice cream scoot
7:35
yeah that's good this that's that'll be
7:38
good yeah
7:42
so this is how we going to make our
7:44
rainbow cake y'all I'm going to
7:48
start with a white
7:50
layer and I'm going to just put that
7:53
right in the
7:54
center and then we're going to come in
7:57
oh I don't have another spoon do I
8:00
and then I'm going to come in and I'm
8:02
going to put the
8:04
red right there in the center now I'm
8:07
not going to stir that
8:10
up I'm not going to stir it and now I'm
8:14
going to come in with the
8:17
blue and I'm going to drop it right
8:23
there just like that
8:26
and I'm going to give my pan just a a
8:29
little Shake that'll help get it to
8:34
spreading out all right now I'm going
8:37
back with the
8:41
white the white layer and now I'm going
8:44
back with the
8:49
pink or red supposed to be red
8:53
y'all it's like modern art yes big
8:57
splatter I mean this is this is is so
8:59
much fun I love doing now if you want to
9:02
take a turn let me know cuz like I said
9:06
this is this is the fun
9:08
part your kids will have a
9:12
ball helping you make this
9:15
cake all
9:17
right so we just
9:21
keep alternating the colors just like
9:26
that until we've used up all of our
9:34
batter and then we're going to bake
9:37
this at
9:40
350 I think I baked mine in this pan for
9:44
20 or 25
9:47
minutes so you get the gist of how you
9:50
wind up with a cake all right so I'm
9:53
going to put this to the side because
9:55
it's going to take a few minutes for us
9:57
to uh decorate our cake with the flag so
10:01
I've already baked off a
10:04
cake and I did mine just that exact same
10:08
way and this is what we wound up with so
10:12
when we cut it we'll have all those
10:15
different layers of colors all
10:18
right we're going to ice
10:22
it and I'm going to need those rinsed
10:25
off so I can beat my icing up
10:30
because I've had it ready and it's just
10:32
been sitting in that bowl so may have
10:34
gotten a little hard so I want to just
10:39
cream thank you Eddie and I got go
10:45
everywhere all right so I'm just
10:49
using a buttercream
10:55
icing and here we
10:58
go now now we fix to have a lot of
11:02
fun and you'll see that I put parchment
11:06
paper uh underneath my cake so when I
11:10
get through icing it
11:13
uh I can just slip that paper out and it
11:17
won't be all messy my board will be nice
11:20
and
11:24
clean so I hope this is going to taste
11:27
good you know it probably would have
11:29
been good Eddie if I had used two cake
11:33
mixes you know and done a double layer
11:36
yeah that would be higher that would
11:39
that would be a huge
11:42
cake but I think this will be
11:47
fun you know the most important part
11:52
is you know creating a conversation
11:56
piece and sharing this experience with
11:59
our
12:01
children or a family
12:10
member you made this for Jack's birthday
12:14
right the last time you made it what i'
12:17
I've never made a flag cake oh well no
12:19
the the uh rainbow cake the rainbow cake
12:22
yes yes I I did it for
12:26
um for Jack's birthday
12:32
my cake is is
12:35
um shedding a little
12:42
bit must be moist then must I hope I
12:46
hope you know you can really take a a
12:50
box cake
12:51
mix and really doctor it up in a way
12:56
that you would never know
12:59
you know it's that it's that
13:04
simple and that easy I know I'm
13:06
swallowing hard like I want some
13:10
[Laughter]
13:12
cake and you know I'm not going to worry
13:14
about this being you know perfectly
13:19
slick I'm not opposed to
13:22
the to the little curly cues
13:27
and all that that happens with the
13:32
icing that's where it I'm going to cover
13:35
that right there cuz that
13:41
was that got a
13:44
little got some crumbs in
13:55
it okay so that was very very
14:13
simple this would be like one bite cake
14:17
yes all right so Eddie since you've done
14:20
this let's get
14:22
started all right how big do we want to
14:25
make our flag I think big uh do you want
14:29
to put the flag pole on first no I
14:31
thought we put that last oh we can just
14:34
to judge okay well let's do that I'm
14:37
going to
14:39
go by your expertise how's that perfect
14:44
so that'll put the
14:46
flag about right
14:49
there I think that's a little
14:53
long for the flag how about you yeah you
14:57
mean High PR yes I think we need to cut
15:00
that don't you think
15:03
mhm
15:09
okay I probably should have cut them all
15:12
at one time shouldn't
15:16
I've well that's all
15:22
right what do you think about that it
15:24
looks good
15:27
looks all right when should we start
15:29
coming in with the blue I think there
15:31
this is going to give us enough space to
15:33
do a blue field so
15:37
um uh like up there for the top no no
15:41
red on top no red on top okay so we'll
15:44
take that
15:45
off and we'll come in here with the blue
15:50
yep and thank goodness we've got whoa
15:54
thank goodness we've got white
15:57
icing so that gives us our
16:02
white now what are we going to do about
16:05
stars
16:06
Edie well we've got this white
16:10
icing that we can use good idea to fill
16:15
in the space yes so we'll just pipe some
16:22
stars on to the blue balls
16:36
and we want to keep that completely
16:41
Square o I like those
16:44
candies I like the candies better than
16:47
blueberries because those blueberries
16:50
are going to run oh yeah this is a fun
16:55
cake I think uhhuh and I don't not very
16:58
healthy but
17:01
very
17:02
patriotic this is definitely a kids cake
17:06
yes this is for the kids not the adults
17:08
that's exactly right this is for our
17:11
children we want to teach
17:15
them
17:19
patriotism and to love their
17:22
country and to celebrate their country
17:27
uh-oh I'm fixing to have a
17:30
mess I'm fixing to get can I have a damp
17:33
rag
17:35
please I'm fixing to
17:39
um get
17:42
icing
17:45
everywhere all right so we want to bring
17:48
these in well I still got icing all over
17:51
that
17:54
Eddie have to start fresh May
18:09
okay
18:29
what do you think one more one one more
18:32
yeah that should do one
18:37
more that will be
18:40
perfect well you know what
18:44
Eddie for us to never have done anything
18:48
like this I like
18:53
it don't you I do like it I you know
18:56
what the White shows up the White shows
19:00
through there but I'll try to um now
19:03
this you're going to have to hold on and
19:04
kind of dab
19:06
okay so here we go we're going to try to
19:10
do a
19:14
star and you can see I'm not it might be
19:17
kind of gooey it's different different
19:19
type of frosting yeah
19:29
yeah I I'm not crazy about that
19:34
Eddie
19:37
so I'm going to just do like
19:42
this
19:46
just pretend
19:50
Stars how's
19:54
that great
20:01
you know if if I had
20:03
left a little bit of
20:06
room in between the blue
20:11
balls it would have looked like
20:14
Stars this would be a fun project for
20:17
the grandkids oh my gosh they would have
20:20
so much fun doing this I could just see
20:23
Sullivan and yes having a blast and yes
20:28
putting on this candy on here yes so
20:32
that's right
20:33
cute and uh I'm going to remove a stripe
20:37
to make it official oh okay did I put
20:40
too many
20:40
[Laughter]
20:44
stripes and I just wanted to eat one too
20:47
so oh
20:50
good so how's that that's that is very
20:55
very crude
20:57
stars but
20:59
if you had the right piece of
21:03
equipment um if you know with your white
21:06
you could just easily do it but we had
21:10
the wrong wrong one but how's that I
21:13
think it's adorable I think it looks
21:16
great so happy 4th of July everybody now
21:20
we're just going to pull these
21:26
out and look at our c cake that's what
21:29
our cake looks like in there it looks
21:31
like a rainbow going let you do that
21:35
okay you scared yes I see half the cake
21:39
going with
21:40
it well you know you you're just
21:43
supposed to stick that right up
21:45
underneath the edge and I had them
21:47
pretty deep in there
21:50
so so there we go our 4th of July
21:55
cake I think that we need
22:00
though to cut it you know what um and
22:02
taste it I brought um for the 4th of
22:08
July some sparkler candles oh
22:12
good good good good
22:16
good see if we get it sparkling okay
22:29
how
22:37
fun I hope it Sparkles H I said I hope
22:41
it Sparkles I hope go too it's star you
22:44
could use real spark uhoh dad G
22:48
it oh it is it's going to
22:52
Sparkle it's going to Sparkle
22:56
y'all happy fourth of July to
23:00
everybody uh hope this will inspire you
23:03
you know it doesn't have to be Bakery
23:07
gorgeous um the fact that you got in the
23:10
kitchen with somebody that you really
23:12
care about and just have fun with
23:16
it look at
23:18
them all right so we can cut this just
23:20
like we would cut a pie in all right so
23:24
let's see what we've
23:26
got this cake is supposed to be red
23:29
white and blue
23:31
y'all there it is oh look how pretty
23:34
look how pretty it
23:39
is there you go Eddie you get the first
23:44
bite I'll take it
