Hey y'all, I'm Paula Deen, and I've got the adventure of a lifetime to share with ya
0:07
You know, it's been 18 years since our last family trip, and we're fixin' to change that on the magical island of St. Lucia
0:17
You're hungry, ain't ya? Start! Y'all just won't believe the fun, the views, and especially, especially the flavors we found in this Caribbean paradise
0:27
All I need's a straw. Come on, y'all. It's the Dean family vacation, and we're heading to St. Lucia for some Caribbean sun food and adventure
0:42
Don't miss out. We took a four-and-a-half-hour flight from Atlanta and arrived in paradise
0:52
St. Lucia is just 27 miles long and 14 miles wide and gorgeous from one end to the other
1:05
We've spent every waking moment for 18 years working as hard as we can to build our business
1:11
And we never take any time to kind of celebrate together as a family. It was Brooke, my daughter-in-law, Jack, my grandson, Jamie, Bobby, and Michael's daughter, Michelle
1:24
It's lush and green, and it's a little underdeveloped, and that's what we wanted, was to feel like we were really, really away
1:32
St. Lucia is one of the most beautiful spots I've ever been. My wife and I honeymoon there
1:36
My brother's been there. You've got mountains. You've got beautiful reefs and great food
1:41
Something for everybody. Oh, gosh, we had the best driver, and he knew the island like the back of his hand
1:51
The island changed hands 14 times. Seven times French, seven times British
1:59
As a result of this, we speak Creole, which is our dialect
2:05
It's broken French. So if you want to call your husband darling, you say doo-doo
2:10
That'll work out just perfect. That's normally what I call him. How you doing, Dudu
2:16
I think it was one of the prettiest places I've ever been to. One side was emerald green
2:22
The other side was crystal blue, and the mountains were just marvelous
2:27
Soufra means sulfur. This is the volcano. Right now where we are, we are in the crater
2:33
It's about seven miles wide. Wow. Now, these mountains here are the pitons
2:39
Pitons meaning spikes. They're the landmarks of St. Lucia. Oh, and look at my little Jack
2:45
It's our first vacation together. Our first family vacation. He says he's hungry
2:51
So what's wrong with that? Little Jack wasn't the only one, y'all. So I asked our driver, Ben, you know, where he'd grab a snack
2:58
Well, sure enough, he took us to a beautiful spot with a delicious local delicacy
3:04
Kasava bread. We met the owner. Her name was Miss Joan. How are you, dear
3:11
I'm okay on you. Is your bread as good as my biscuits? I think so
3:16
You think so? Just like us. We all learned that cassava is a root
3:23
She and her family grew it right outside the bakery. Miss Joan compared this cassava to what we think of as a yam or a sweet potato here in our country
3:35
It's good for everybody. Is it fattening? It's more better than the white bread we're eating
3:41
Is it not heavy? It's not heavy? No. It's a fat egg? It's good
3:44
You have no butter, no egg, no baking powder. Say what? No butter
3:51
No. It's quite a process to make this bread. She peels it
3:56
It's got to be ground down, almost like pulverized. Then she's got a great big kettle over a fire
4:04
And you constantly stir it because you've got to dry out this cassava
4:09
Come on, do a try. Come on, do a try. It looks too much like mopping. I don't like to mop
4:16
By the time you wind up with a product to make, the cassava bread
4:21
it's almost like a cross between our cornmeal and flour. Once dried, she adds nutmeg, cinnamon, and fresh coconut
4:33
Look at this, y'all. Look at that beautiful fresh coconut. We added sugar, candied cherries from a local market, raisins, and a wonderful surprise
4:44
That is cherry essence. Cherry essence. You just put it in the cassava
4:52
It smells like out of this world. When we finish. That smell is unbelievable, y'all
4:59
It smells like a cherry sundae. Lettuce. Fabulous. We made balls of the mixture and then flattened, and we shaped them on a banana leaf
5:10
Oh, okay. I'm not as good at spinning as you are. You're good
5:16
You're good. Look how beautiful. You got you doing? After she would get the batter added out, she would set it over a very even fire
5:28
It would just dry out and cook. And don't forget the butter
5:33
No, no butter. Michael, I've got some butter out there in the cooler
5:39
No butter. You can't imagine being able to make a bread in as many flavors as Miss Joan had done
5:47
There was everything from sweet to savory. I don't think it needs butter
5:52
It's like a big newton. There was a salt fish. Tuna. Banana
5:56
Cherry plain. And chocolate. The family went nuts over the tuna. Tuna fish
6:06
That's a new call. Couldn't believe how much flavor these things had
6:10
I could eat that for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. That's a flavor that I've never had before, and all the spices, and it just tasted like the Caribbean
6:19
Miss Joan. Hug me, honey. Thank you so much. Yes, I appreciate it
6:26
It was wonderful. Later on, y'all, we're heading to the rainforest for some out-of-this-world adventure
6:33
I hate y'all! But up next, come with me to taste the best sweet and savory treats of St. Lucia
6:42
You sure you ain't from Georgia, girl? No, I'm from St. Lucia
6:52
On St. Lucia, y'all, there's something new and wonderful to find around every corner
6:57
I was really, really interested, you know, in finding the foods of St. Lucia and the things that grow there
7:04
So the thing I wanted to do was find out about the cocoa plantations
7:11
There was a nice lady there named Cornelia that took us through the steps of the cocoa beans
7:17
And right here, this is the cocoa pot. I going to crack it open so you can see what the beans look like inside and tell you what we make with our cocoa beans on this plantation Then I gonna open it it This is what you get inside white and slimy beans or jungle M
7:41
You can grab one, suck over it, but when you suck in place, you kind of bat into the bean or swallow
7:46
Oh, you can suck. Because the inside is bitter. Mmm. So it has like a fruity taste. Yeah
7:52
It's like chocolate at all. It's good. It's good. And after you're done, you threw it out
7:55
It reminded me of the way a melon would taste, and it was gooey like a marshmallow. No, no, it's good
8:01
Chocolate in its raw form was not very appealing looking in the pod
8:05
but I tasted it, and it's really a nice fruit. So I was thinking, oh, yeah, I can see how this is going to be great
8:11
Looks like the inside of a chicken, but it tastes good. How did they know to take this slimy bean and make chocolate from it or cocoa
8:25
There must have been some smart folks is all I got to say. The cocoa beans dry on big trays that slide in if it rains and out when the St. Lucian sun is shining
8:36
When they sell the beans whole, traditionally they polish them to make them look real pretty
8:41
They don't polish these beans with their hands, y'all. They do the cocoa dance
8:51
Look at that. And don't worry, the beans get clean before hitting the shelves
8:59
I want to do it. You want to do it? I do want to do it
9:03
You think I could do it without getting messed up? I think so. Bobby, why don't you do it
9:08
No, I'd like to see you do it. I so want to do that
9:13
I'm not surprised one bit when I looked up and my mom was dancing on Cocoa Beans
9:18
That's typical mom. She wants to do everything. She's lucky she didn't break her neck
9:22
It was pretty slippery in there. Oh, God! I'm on fire. How do you do it
9:29
You can't push. You got it? All right, here we go. Yeah, here we go
9:35
Over here, let's have it. Whoa, whoa, whoa. All right, I'm moving
9:41
Let's do it the other way. I'll never eat another piece of chocolate without thinking about Mama's feeding
9:49
More commonly, they sell the roasted mashed up beans in a paste form
9:53
They make what we call a cocoa stick, and it's 100% pure, unsweetened cocoa
10:00
You want to try these bits up? Sure. Yeah. Anybody else? Why'd you do that, son
10:12
Told me to. She said just taste. She didn't say eat a spoonful
10:17
It was like eating a mouthful of coffee beans. Wasn't my favorite thing
10:24
Is it good, Bobby? I'm trying to be. St. Lucia really is a food lover's paradise, y'all
10:33
If you're not touring cocoa plantations, then you're passing by lush banana fields
10:40
We made our way back to the hotel, and I took the opportunity to visit a woman our driver had told me about
10:47
She was down on the beach cooking up some barbecue chicken, and he said I really, really shouldn't miss it
10:53
Do I smell something cooking? Yes, you're smelling something good. What are you cooking
10:59
Barbecue chicken? Oh. You know, there ain't never been a chicken that got away from old Paula
11:06
Oh, my gracious. She didn't have a lot of fancy equipment. She had a regular just charcoal grill set up on the beach
11:17
Oh, what service, Marjorie. Ah! Oh, my goodness. Now, what is that you put on that chicken
11:28
Barbecue sauce with mixed vegetables. with rice, fried plantain, fried, and salad and lentils peas
11:40
Mmm, and it's still hot. What a surprise. The chicken was delicious
11:44
It was kind of a sweet and hot... You sure you ain't from Georgia, girl
11:51
No, I'm from San Lausanne. Sitting down on that picnic table on the beach
11:57
was rather intoxicating, I have to say. And while I was sitting there enjoying my meal
12:03
there was this man, and he is climbing up that coconut tree. Uh-oh
12:11
His hat about hit the barbecue grill. You lost your hat
12:20
Are you fixing to pick you a coconut? I'll pick one. Now how long have you been climbing coconut trees
12:34
I've been climbing coconut trees for 40 years. 40 years? No wonder you do it so well
12:39
He cuts the green coconut and lets me taste the milk out of it
12:51
All I need is a straw. That's a dry one. That's a dry coconut
12:58
That's a dry coconut and this is the young one. So about three more months, this one you have will be like this one
13:05
The young coconut juice, y'all, was light, almost like water. But the mature one, oh, it was rich and sweet with a really authentic coconut taste
13:17
This is much better than that. Thank you so much. You're welcome, my friend
13:21
Thanks very much. This has been unbelievable. Thank you. Y'all, later on, we've got some deep-sea adventures that's gonna have you in stitches
13:32
But up next... If you think holding on to a man's waist, being drug through the sea as a kite surfer
13:39
I'm a champion. I'm a champion. You know you're not in Savannah anymore, don't you
13:49
Oh, I'm telling you. It's gorgeous. Aren't y'all glad to finally be getting some vacation time away from work and the restaurant
13:55
I have enjoyed being with y'all so much. It's awesome. Where did Brooke and Jack take off to
13:59
Jack's tired. He needed some time more. Oh, so they're in the room? We wanted Mom to go see some beautiful blue water, which she had not seen before
14:10
They were so ready to get to that beach. Surprise. We're going kite surfing
14:17
What you mean, we? We're going to get a big kite. Who is we? We is the we
14:21
The we. The we that is right here. We, we. Michael and I knew dadgum good and well
14:27
We were not up for that. You know what I see right through there
14:32
A restaurant. It's a restaurant. I'll escort you. Yeah, there you go
14:37
So we left the kids to their kite surfing, and off Michael and I go to the reef restaurant
14:44
I'm telling you what, just being around the water, you know, makes me hungry
14:48
Everything makes me hungry. Everything makes me hungry, too. Hello. Hello. How are you
14:54
Thank you Well we get up there and great time of day You know all this local cuisine that I didn have a clue what it was Now what is that roti or whatever that is over there
15:06
We have a veggie roti and a seafood roti. I said it right, roti
15:10
Yeah, it's a roti. What is that? Different seafood with carrots and vegetables, beans, and it's wrapped up in a pastry shell
15:18
That sounds wonderful. Let's try one of those. What do you have that is local
15:22
We have salt, fish, and mix. Who? The salt fish. Salt fish is a salt fish called fish
15:29
It comes with bones, but then we boil it up, take out the bones, and then stew it in the local seasoning
15:35
And what are the bakes? A baked potato? No, it's a pastry like a bread
15:39
And then instead of baking it, we fry it. You shut up, girl
15:47
I think we hit pay dirt on that one. This is going to be awesome
15:53
Are you excited? Hey, how you doing? Hey, man, what's happening? Dude, we're here to go kite surf
15:57
Come to the place. All right. Definitely come to the place. You guys ready to go for it now? Yeah. Perfect
16:02
All right. What we're going to do, we'll go out with a little kite and we'll have a quick train with it. Okay. Then we'll get you straight suited and booted and we'll get you around the water
16:07
Pretty strong wind here. Can we help you? There's a training kite on the beach, you know, sort of a small training kite and you
16:11
sort of get a little confidence about yourself with that. You come down, Dave
16:17
If anything ever goes wrong, you bring the kite straight up to that 12-a-clock position
16:21
like it is now. Okay. and everything just stops. Everything's nice and safe
16:25
and you stop moving and everything. If anything goes wrong. What could possibly go wrong
16:31
Nothing can go wrong. It's pretty technical, because you have to learn to get the kite up
16:37
Then you can't cross your lines. Oh, pull it out, pull it out, pull it out. You got it, you got it, you got it
16:41
Pull it out, pull it out. And then once all this happens, you have to somehow put two feet into a board
16:46
and then figure out how not to be drugged to South America
16:51
Take that. No, it's not okay, is it? I'm sorry. That's all right
16:57
So if something goes wrong, that would be what happened. That's what happened. Here comes our food
17:03
Oh, good. Okay, here we go. Lunch is ready. That didn't take long
17:06
Saltfish and Bix was having saltfish. I think I'll have the saltfish. And then still pretty
17:12
Thank you, ma'am. It was very, very interesting. Let me tell you, the bake was like a fried biscuit
17:20
Michael. Is it delicious? It tastes like my mama's donuts. Let me try the salt fish
17:27
That's salt fish, huh? Mm-hmm. This is like, Michael, they have just deep fried a biscuit
17:35
That's good. It's got like seaweed in it. Try that. So this is a seafood... Roti. Roti
17:43
Seafood roti was good. Kind of like a pot pie almost with seafood in it
17:49
Oh my gosh, that's yummy. Seafood roti was almost like a stew
17:55
It had been stewed down with potatoes and vegetables. I like this better than that
18:04
That's very hot. That's good. It was great fun to sit out there on this beautiful beach
18:11
and enjoy this delicious food. So you've got your rash vest on
18:15
We're ready to hit the water. Just going to wish you with these things. So these are your harnesses. Okay
18:19
So you're going to do that on that. It turned out really not so good when I had to put on the suit
18:26
You have to wear these beautiful sort of snug shirts. How's that feel
18:32
Hot tight. Looks great. You have these really cool looking helmets. Equipment check
18:39
It's a very good look. I've also been blessed with a very large head
18:43
Ready to go? Perfect. All right, let's go. All right, seriously. Next step is he takes you out into the water and he uses a real kite
18:57
There's some strong winds down there in the Caribbean. You have to focus on flying your kite
19:04
Then you have to get the board up underneath you. They said normally six to nine hours before anyone could ever get up on a board and actually fly the kite
19:14
We were getting dragged around is what it was. Y'all were great
19:21
Wonder Woman, Flash Gordon, and Captain America. That's pretty cool. Was it fun
19:28
Yeah, a little fun. Oh, my God. Hey, how are you? Oh, look how strong I'm talking
19:32
Oh, my goodness. Y'all look like y'all were having so much fun. If you think holding on to a man's waist, being drug through the sea as a kite surfer
19:43
I'm a champion. I'm a champion. Y'all, it can hardly get better, but trust me, it does
19:49
Up next, we hit the water for some fun in the sun
19:53
And then we've got dinner plans at the island's most romantical restaurant
20:04
St. Lucia is just enchanting. From the people to the flavors of the food, we've all fallen in love with the island
20:13
And there's still lots to discover. What is this about, guys? Well, this is our sailboat docked out here
20:20
It can't come in so close, so we have to get on this ferry. It's going to take us out. We're going to spend the day cruising around the pitons. No
20:26
The boys had kind of taken charge of our scheduling, and they planned a day for sailing
20:31
We love to be on the water. To get on a boat and be able to sail in the Caribbean
20:36
it's really something that we couldn't miss. We got on the most beautiful sailboat
20:44
and sailed around the island to where the pitons are. It was a perfect day
20:52
I hollered down to Dad and Paula. I was like, there's that ship, and it looks like the one on the Pirates of the Caribbean
20:57
Do your pirate talk. Fire my name. They pulled up alongside us and fired off their cannons
21:06
It was so much fun. It was so great. The name of this boat is called the Unicorn
21:12
but in the movie The Pirates of the Caribbean, it was called the Black Pearl. You can take tours on this boat
21:19
And we passed this ship, and it's just full of folks. Hey
21:25
Hey, y'all. The place that we were going was a beautiful little place
21:32
just kind of tucked in the bottoms of the mountains. And the only way you can get to it is by boat
21:38
We're ready. On the count of three. Now, let's hear it for Jamie
21:43
Way to go! Perfect! It was just like turning back the clock
21:54
All of a sudden, these big old kids became real, real little
21:59
And we're out there splashing and playing. Of course, Michael and I were sitting on the boat like two little fat chillin'
22:08
waiting for lunch to be ready. The captain prepared a fabulous lunch for us
22:15
Naturally, since we were on the ocean, it was only fitting that we have seafood
22:20
It's a fresh kingfish we caught. We caught it this morning. Unbelievable It was a fight too It was a fight Oh yeah How much did it weigh It weighed about 40 pounds 40 pounds 30 pounds yes
22:35
And you only gave me like 6 ounces of it? Well, after you fill it out, you take off the bones
22:39
You only got like two sides of real tender meat. Oh my goodness, it's delicious
22:45
It's got some parsley. It has stallions. It has thyme in it
22:51
Put some local tomatoes. bit of shadowbarnet. It's a small little bit leaves. It's very strong herbs
22:57
It's very good for the fish. Do y'all see I'm no longer eating out of my plate? You're going for Michael's
23:02
salad, which is extraordinary. Well, honey, let me tell you something. I could have drank that dressing
23:08
You have meat on your plate. You're eating Michael's salad. That tells you how good the dressing is. I know it, but see that salad dressing
23:13
It's wonderful. I so badly wanted to know what was in it. And he said something like mustard
23:19
and mayonnaise. I know that is not true. That was not mustard and mayonnaise
23:26
Never did find out, but, ooh, it was so, so good. Wow
23:31
That was just right. Delicious. It's just a really nice, light, satisfying meal
23:40
First of all, we need a strong guy to do the honors. Stop pulling the man set up
23:44
Here I am. All right. Oh, you meant real strong. Oh, yeah
23:50
When Captain Rambali found out that Michael was a captain here in the States
23:57
he turned over the wheel to Michael. Mike's usually behind the wheel of a huge tugboat
24:03
with these powerful hydraulic motors. And so when he had to trust the wind and when the boat kind of..
24:10
I was nervous. Have you ever sailed a boat like this before
24:15
Not really. As a kid, I piddled with it a little bit, but no
24:19
I was learning, but I had to learn quick. This is fun
24:24
I love the quiet. This is great fun. Caught on pretty quick, too
24:29
Seeing Michael have the wheel of that huge sailboat in his hands
24:34
and looking up at him when he would have that sailboat almost laying on its side
24:41
seeing the look of pure, raw contentment and happiness on his face
24:47
I was pretty good. I'd been away from my family all day long
24:56
and for us to sail up into this bay to the restaurant where Brooke and I had celebrated our marriage
25:01
and my son standing on the dock, that was my favorite single part of the whole trip
25:08
Hey, Daddy. All day long, tooling around St. Lucia and stopping at the Pitons and go for a little swim
25:16
and have a gourmet lunch. Cooked by the captain of the boat
25:21
I can't wait to see what's next. Is it actually going to get better
25:28
It was a perfect welcoming. This is where we're going to have dinner
25:33
Brooke and I found this place when we were on our honeymoon two years ago, and it's so romantic
25:37
We freshened up, y'all, and headed to the rainforest hideaway. We couldn't wait to taste their famous island spice dishes
25:45
made with things like local rums and cinnamon, ginger, and scotch bonnet peppers
25:52
Our chef, owner, and host that night was named Chef James Verity
25:59
He prepared a cocoa and chili dusted scallop, and it had a mint pea puree
26:05
The next course the chef prepared us was a luschen-spiced pumpkin and coconut soup
26:13
Isn't that a different combination, y'all? That's unusual because it's hot and it's sweet at the same time
26:20
I taste the graininess of the coconut. Definitely. The pumpkin soup was just the best soup that I had ever had
26:27
It was absolutely delicious. The main course that he prepared for us was a jerked spiced shrimp
26:36
It was served along with a parmesan risotto and a lime ginger cream
26:41
Oh my gosh. That's what I was waiting on. Is it real hot? That's what the doctor ordered
26:45
Mmm. Mmm. By dessert, he prepared us rum sauteed bananas with a butterscotch sauce and a coconut ice cream
26:57
Well, you know how I love coconut. Have y'all noticed that the bananas here are, they're like they've been injected with sugar
27:06
Well, you know why, right? Why? Tell us, please. Because in the States, the bananas ripen in the store, off the vine
27:12
Down here, the bananas ripen on the vine. So it gives a completely different flavor
27:16
Oh, they're delicious. You know, this has been everything that I thought it would be, Michael
27:21
And more. And more. And you know what? I can't wait to see what tomorrow's going to bring
27:29
I can't either. It's just a night to remember. It was the perfect end of perfect day
27:38
The Dean Groover family vacation is ending with 10 pounds of yumminess
27:44
We want this one. One. But first, hit it! We've got a St. Lucia special adventure to try
27:53
All right, guys, that's great. So I had heard about this market, y'all
28:06
this located in Castries, which is the capital of St. Lucia. What a treat that was
28:15
Everybody had their booths and they were selling their wares. A lot of fresh produce
28:20
Michael, we've got to have some tangerines. And what are these? These are golden apples
28:26
Golden apples. You want a couple of apples? A little more citrus than the apple
28:34
A little more citrus? Right. This market has been in business over 100 years
28:41
and all the locals bring their goods in because it was right next to the harbor
28:46
When the ships would come in, they would swap and trade goods. And there was also booths actually preparing lunches
28:55
Well, you know, Paula done sniffed her way to that booth. Hello
28:59
How are you? I'm great! You good? I'm great. What are y'all cooking in here
29:05
Oh, yeah, we have some, that's some steam salad. Uh-huh. Steam salad, yes
29:10
And there we have some very nice stewed lamb. Oh, lamb. Stewed lamb
29:16
And there we have some nice turkey. Turkey. Yeah. And what are y'all cooking back there
29:23
That's a fish sauce. That's a fish sauce. Then we fry the fish, fry, and you put it in the sauce
29:30
She asked what we wanted on the plate, and naturally I said, you know, I want a sample of it all
29:37
This is a fish. Oh, right. Is it ready? That looks wonderful
29:43
Enjoy, honey. Well, thank you so much. I will. Looks wonderful. Thank you
29:49
It was just a little bit of everything that she was cooking
29:52
And oh my goodness, was it ever so good. That's a yum. Yum
29:58
A yum. That was the best meal that I had while I was in St. Lucia
30:04
Because, you know, I have a very simple kind of palate. I love homemade food
30:10
I'd had a grandmother living on the islands. Then I had just stepped into my grandmother's kitchen
30:17
The food was just delicious. You're good, girl! Okay, baby. You're good
30:25
Thank you! Well, we proceeded to walk through the market. Hey, how are y'all doing
30:33
And I could feel somebody looking at me. Hello, darling. What you got in your side
30:43
Huh? Macaroni and cheese. Her name was Cavanaugh. Do you know that one of the most popular dishes
30:53
at my restaurant in America is macaroni and cheese. Yep. But I watch your show
31:00
You watch my show! She said she was there with her grandmother
31:05
that her grandmother had a booth. Hey! We watch it out to every day
31:14
I'm so happy to meet you. Oh, and I'm so happy to meet you. It's real life
31:19
It's real life! You got the real deal, honey. Woo! We all love going on vacation and eating the cuisine of wherever we are
31:31
But the boys said, now it's time to do something else. All we're going to do is tour this beautiful, tranquil rainforest
31:40
You are going to love it. Look how gorgeous it is. In the beautiful place. Fresh air. I see it's beautiful
31:44
I still don't trust y'all. It's terrific. Yeah. What are we doing? You want to know the name of the place
31:49
Yeah. Treetop Adventures. We're ziplining through the rainforest. You are not going to believe what they had their poor mama doing
31:58
Come on, we've got to gear up. Get in some gear. What do you mean gear? Who are all those men
32:04
Oh. Am I scared? Yes. She's scared, guys. Is it completely safe
32:08
How many times do you do this, son? I'm sure this makes me feel scared. Oh, my God! It's his birthday on the job
32:18
We all looked great. Started with a hairnet. You are fixing to screw up a perfectly good hairdo
32:35
I'm ready. Maybe I ain't. Just a helmet check
32:45
We were all officially in gear and ready to go. We stood around and just laughed at each other for about five minutes before we got started You don think I going to be able to hold on
33:07
I hate y'all! This is a plot to get my money. Not a bad idea
33:19
zip lines. I'm sure that's what she's dreamed of doing her whole life
33:23
Let's go! Hit it! Go mama! Go mama! All right guys, that's great
33:36
Oh my goodness. I can't believe she did it. That was wonderful
33:42
That was wonderful. How cool is that
33:56
Holy ca moly
34:10
There I am, y'all, just dangling. Just dangling. One of the young men had to come out there and get me
34:24
You gonna get me? Oh God, I'm so glad to see you
34:36
Hey, I'm screwed up. It was a great day. I think Mom was really surprised and had a lot of fun
34:46
And that's how you do that. Coming up, y'all, the Deans are taking on the Caribbean deep seas
34:53
Watch out! See the fish? See. It was our last day in St. Lucia
35:04
and the boys wanted to take Mama deep sea fishing. Jamie and Bobby had planned an activity for Michael and Michelle to enjoy together
35:16
Horseback ride. and an activity for the boys and me. It's very seldom do we get individual time with our kids
35:26
We're usually thrown into a group. I so want y'all to catch one
35:31
I actually caught a marlin that weighed about 1,500 pounds off the same boat we were on
35:35
so we were excited when we got started. And the fact that we're doing this together
35:39
the three of us for the first time, is like the best. In Savannah, you have to go out like 40 miles to deep sea fish
35:48
Well there five minutes and you there I decided to get comfortable while we were waiting on the fish to bite And all of a sudden Bobby spotted a pod of pilot whales
36:02
There's a bunch of them. Hurry up, Mom. Come here. Look, right over here
36:06
Right over here. Look. Coming right here. Oh, my gracious. Look, there's about eight of them right there
36:13
They're coming towards the boat. Oh, wow. Look. It's the first time I'd seen pilot whales, and it was a special thing because the fishing was slow
36:24
And then just about the time we began to poke our lip out, oh, poor us, we're not catching any fish
36:30
Hey, how about whale watching? You know what, guys? I don't care now if we don't catch a fish
36:38
While the boys and I were riding the high seas, Michael and Michelle were saddling up for another type of excitement
36:45
How do you feel, Dad? It's been a while since we've ridden together
36:49
I know it. Especially on the beach. I don't think we've ever gotten to ride on the beach, have we
36:53
I don't think we've ever been on the beach. I grew up with horses, so I really love them
36:57
I felt sorry for that one that he had to haul me around
37:00
and I was almost as big as a horse. Michelle, you want to race
37:04
I've wanted to race you since I was just a little girl. What are you talking about
37:12
Come on, boy. Come on. Yeah. That was the ultimate to be able to ride on the beach
37:19
I told you I was going to beat you. I let her win. Yeah, right, Dad
37:25
It was a memory I'll have with me forever. Yippee-yay. I was so tired because I had been ziplining and all that stuff
37:39
Mama was pooped. Mom's asleep. Jamie and I decided we wanted to pull a joke on Mom
37:43
The captain had one fish that they had caught that morning, but this fish was frozen
37:49
The boys started yelling, fish, we've got a fish. Hey, Mom, we've got a fish on
37:55
Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on
38:01
I hear it. Get in the chair. We got one. Let me get him, y'all
38:09
Get him, Mama. Oh, he's tight. He's tight. He's tight. He's tight. He's tight. He's tight. He's tight
38:12
He's tight. I knew it was the other one. Oh my gosh! Mom actually thought she was catching a fish
38:18
Mom springs up out and she fights a dead frozen fish for about 15 minutes
38:24
It was awesome. I can't believe what that was going. You're hungry, ain't you
38:28
Darn it! I'm working like a dog. That fish is fighting me to beat the band
38:34
Turn the net. And I worked and I worked and I got that fish up to the boat
38:40
No, I wanna give it up. Get that club and knock him in the head
38:48
I think you got the fight out of him Mom almost He got the fight out of me I know that Okay Hey look at that I go to one Yahoo
38:59
He's frozen! He's frozen! We wanted to make sure you got a big
39:09
So we brought one with us. The whole time I was thinking
39:16
great time of day. this sucker is fighting me. You want to club him
39:23
I don't want to club him. You. And you. That's who I want to club
39:33
Oh, that was worth the trip. It was just a spectacular day
39:42
on the water with my boys, y'all. And as the sun started to go down
39:46
we headed back to port. The boys had made arrangements for us to meet up with Michael and Michelle
39:56
at a little village called Ann's LaRae. We heard that there's actual fish fry festival
40:03
every Friday night. We knew that it was something that we'd had to see
40:08
Uh-oh, Mama found some more food. Ooh, hot out of the oven
40:13
Oh, my gracious, it's hot as eight. Try that. Ooh, and it's good
40:19
Very good. Mm. You hit that one, brother. That is good. Yeah
40:26
I just couldn't believe that our vacation was finally up. We had had such a wonderful time as a family
40:34
It was a lot of fun. We almost got to know each other better
40:38
We want this one. One? There's five of us. I can eat that one by myself
40:44
Okay, can we get two like this? These 10-pound lobsters were the perfect treat for our last night in St. Lucia
40:56
The food was just delicious. The lobster was good. It was one of the biggest I've ever seen
41:03
Gosh, I hate to tell y'all, but this was our last night. No. And I don't want to leave
41:08
Well, then let's don't. We've had such a wonderful time. This St. Lucian vacation was like stepping into paradise for a little while
41:19
Just being with family, it's a celebration of family. It's like everything that we do
41:23
That was the first time that Jamie and Mom and I have been on vacation together since 1989
41:30
since we started our business. It was great. Had a wonderful time. Here
41:35
Here. Here. A big bottle of water. I'll sit back. I'll stay
41:41
It's been a great vacation. Oh my gosh. I can't wait till I'm next to everybody
41:47
I'm about to pop too
