Happy Fourth of July, Club members
0:05
Eddie and I are going to share with y'all today our version of a flag cake
0:11
And you know what? I've got a confession to make. I've never made a flag cake
0:18
You know what? I think I have. Have you really? Yeah, like maybe when I was in high school
0:23
That blue looks so pretty on you. Thank you. You got a few strings, but other than that, you're like perfect
0:30
Oh well, here, let me get these scissors. Give me a haircut
0:34
Because I will keep looking at that. There you go, now you're slap-cadab perfect
0:39
That blue is so pretty with your coloring. Thank you. All right, so I've never made one, Eddie has, thank goodness
0:47
You know, most people, and you see a lot of them around the Fourth of July, but you see them making them
0:53
with blueberries and strawberries. That's what I've done. Well, have you? Well, you know, that fruit can ripen pretty quick and it can run
1:03
So I thought, you know, I don't think I want to go the fruit route. So I found some other things that I think will work very, very well
1:13
I got the idea about Twizzlers. You know, I like that rope licorice
1:21
I think it's going to be a little big, though. But I found these candies
1:26
It's like a rope candy filled with some kind of nougat. Oh, it's really sweet and tart
1:31
It is. It's sweet and tart. Yeah. Cause it was made by a sweet tart, right
1:36
That's right. That's right. And then I found these little blue candies
1:42
I mean, it's, so everything is going to be edible. Let's see
1:48
Yeah, it's got a chocolate center and they're good. So that's going to be the blue in our flag
1:56
All right, I'm going to show y'all how I doctor up a box cake mix
2:05
You know, a Fourth of July cake, I don't want to go to all the trouble of, you know, making a cake from scratch
2:14
I'm going to put my energy in trying to recreate that flag. So I'm using a white cake mix, and I don't go by the instructions on the box
2:24
I use four eggs, it calls for three. I always add an extra egg and we got lucky
2:32
I've got a little chicken that will lay some real large eggs
2:37
and one of our eggs was a double yolk. So we got twice the bang for our buck
2:43
Yeah, it's almost like a duck egg almost. Yeah, I know. So we got five yolks in here
2:49
And Eddie, if you wanna take your mixer and start mixing it
2:54
as I add the ingredients. Now I do add like a third of a cup of oil
3:01
That's what it calls for, so I do do that. And for the water, I always use buttermilk
3:08
I was out of buttermilk this morning, so I'm just gonna use a whole milk
3:16
not 2%, not skim, but just the regular whole milk. And I always add vanilla flavoring
3:28
some kind of flavoring. Sometimes I'll use a coconut flavoring. Sometimes I'll use orange
3:39
You know, it's just whatever I'm in the mood for. So since it's just a white cake
3:45
you can really do any kind of flavoring you want. flavoring you want
3:53
Vanilla's always in order. Now we'll want to beat that for a couple of minutes
3:57
Now while Eddie's doing that, I'm gonna show you the pan that I chose to make the cake in
4:09
This is one of my cake pans that I bought this. I think I was making a wedding cake
4:18
and I needed different layers. So you can make it in a 13 by nine by two
4:23
or a 15 by 10. You know, you can make it in any shape you want
4:28
but I thought the round cake with the rectangle flag would be fun
4:33
So you wanna make sure that you spray your pan very, very good
4:41
because you're gonna have to bring this cake outta here in one solid piece
4:47
So you wanna make sure it does not stick. And if you're worried about it
4:55
I use a wax paper or parchment paper, and I'll just cut out my paper the size of my cake pan
5:04
So, if you're scared, you can do that. All right, on Positively Paula
5:11
one day I made like a rainbow cake. So I thought, well, that'll be fun
5:17
for my 4th of July cake to do it like red, white, and blue
5:22
So that's good, Eddie. So what we, yeah. What we wanna do now is divide up our batter
5:32
into like thirds. So, like a third there, a third here
5:47
And we can, we could just leave it in this bowl, but if you want me to transfer it to a clear bowl, I will
5:57
And that way we can see if we've got it divided, you know, pretty easily
6:04
This is a fun cake. Correctly I mean not easy This is a fun cake and it something that my grand boys love helping me with Okay so that looks pretty even
6:17
I might have shorted that one just a little bit. All right, so here comes the fun part
6:25
We're going to leave one white, but then we're going to color one blue and one red
6:36
Sometimes red can look pinky too, so I want to use a good bit of coloring for that
6:48
It's a deep color though. Yeah. Have you ever made like Greek Easter eggs, that deep, deep red
6:55
I never, never, never. How do you do that? I don't know. I've never gotten how they made them that red, what dye they use
7:02
Hmm. Well, there's all kind of dyes out there now. All right, so let me find a spoon
7:14
A good spoon. Like a big spoon? Oh. Well, let's see. Yeah, a big spoon
7:29
Yeah, look in that drawer over there, Eddie. How about like an ice cream scoop
7:34
Yeah, that's good. This? That'll be good. Yeah. So, this is how we're going to make our rainbow cake, y'all
7:46
I'm going to start with a white layer. And I'm going to just put that right in the center
7:55
And then we're going to come in. Oh, I don't have another spoon, do I
7:59
And then I'm gonna come in and I'm gonna put the red right there in the center
8:07
Now I'm not gonna stir that up. I'm not gonna stir it
8:13
And now I'm gonna come in with the blue. And I'm gonna drop it right there
8:24
Just like that. and I'm gonna give my pan just a little shake
8:31
That'll help get it to spreading out. All right, now I'm going back with the white
8:42
The white layer. And now I'm going back with the pink. Or red
8:51
It's supposed to be red, y'all. It's like modern art. Yes. Big splatter
8:57
I mean, this is so much fun. I love doing it. Now, if you want to take a turn, let me know
9:05
Because, like I said, this is the fun part. Your kids will have a ball helping you make this cake
9:16
All right. So we just keep alternating the colors. just like that until we've used up all of our batter
9:35
And then we're going to bake this at 350. I think I baked mine in this pan for 20 or 25 minutes
9:48
So you get the gist of how you wind up with a cake
9:51
All right, so I'm gonna put this to the side because it's gonna take a few minutes
9:57
for us to decorate our cake with the flag. So I've already baked off a cake
10:03
and I did mine just that exact same way. And this is what we wound up with
10:12
So when we cut it, we'll have all those different layers of colors
10:17
All right, we're gonna ice it. and I'm going to need those rinsed off
10:25
so I can beat my icing up because I've had it ready
10:31
and it's just been sitting in that bowl, so it may have gotten a little hard
10:36
so I want to just cream. Thank you, Eddie, and I got gook everywhere
10:46
All right, so I'm just using a buttercream icing. And here we go
10:58
Now we're fixing to have a lot of fun. And you'll see that I put parchment paper
11:06
underneath my cake, so when I get through icing it, I can just slip that paper out
11:16
and it won't be all messy. My board will be nice and clean
11:25
So I hope this is gonna taste good. You know, it probably would have been good, Eddie
11:30
if I had used two cake mixes, you know, and done a double layer
11:36
Yeah, that would be a big cake. Making it higher. That would be a huge cake
11:43
But I think this will be fun. You know, the most important part is, you know, creating a conversation piece and sharing
11:58
this experience with our children or a family member. You made this for Jack's birthday, right
12:15
The last time you made it. What? I never made a flag cake No the rainbow cake The rainbow cake yes Yes I did it for Jack birthday
12:32
My cake is shedding a little bit. Must be moist then
12:44
I hope, you know, you can really take a box cake mix and really doctor it up in a way that you would never know
12:59
You know, that it's that simple and that easy. I know I'm swallowing hard like I want some cake
13:10
And you know, I'm not going to worry about this being, you know, perfectly slick
13:20
I'm not opposed to the little curlicues and all that that happens with the icing
13:33
That's where it, I'm going to cover that right there because that was
13:40
That got a little, got some crumbs in it. Okay
13:57
So that was very simple. This would be like one bite cake
14:17
Yes. All right. So, Eddie, since you've done this, let's get started
14:23
All right. How big do we want to make our flag? I think big
14:28
Do you want to put the flagpole on first? No, I thought we'd put that last
14:32
Okay. Oh, we can. Just to judge. Okay. Well, let's do that
14:37
I'm going to go. by your expertise. How's that? Perfect. So that'll put the flag
14:45
about right there. I think that's a little long for the flag
14:55
How about you? Yeah, you mean height twice? Yes, I think we need to cut that
15:01
Don't you think? Mm-hmm. Okay. I probably should have cut them all at one time, shouldn't I
15:15
Well, that's all right. What do you think about that
15:24
It looks good. All right, when should we start coming in with the blue, do you think
15:30
I think there, this is going to give us enough space to do a blue field
15:35
Uh, like up there for the top. No, no red on top
15:42
No red on top. Okay, so we'll take that off. And we'll come in here with the blue. Yep
15:51
And thank goodness we've got, whoa! Thank goodness we've got white icing
15:58
So that gives us our white. Now what are we gonna do about stars, Eddie
16:07
Well, we've got this white icing that we can use. Good idea
16:14
To fill in the space. Yeah, so we'll just pipe some stars
16:23
onto the blue balls. And we wanna keep that completely square
16:42
Ooh, I like those candies. I like the candies better than blueberries
16:48
because those blueberries are gonna run. Oh yeah. This is a fun cake, I think
16:55
Uh huh. And I don't want- Not very healthy, but- Very patriotic
17:03
This is definitely a kid's cake. Yes. This is for the kids, not the adults
17:08
That's exactly right. This is for our children. We want to teach them patriotism
17:20
And to love their country. And to celebrate their country. Uh-oh. I'm fixing to have a mess
17:30
I'm fixing to get... Can I have a damp rag, please? I'm fixing to..
17:37
Get icing everywhere. All right, so we'll want to bring these in
17:49
Well, I still got icing all over that, Eddie. You may have to start fresh
17:56
I may. Okay
18:09
What do you think
18:30
One more One more yeah that should do One more That will be perfect Well you know what Eddie
18:44
For us to never have done anything like this, I like it
18:54
Don't you? I do like it. You know what? The white shows up perfectly through there
18:58
The white shows through there. But I'll try to... Now this you're going to have to hold on and kind of dab
19:05
Oh, okay. So here we go. We're going to try to do a star
19:14
And you can see I'm not... It might be kind of gooey. It's a different type of frosting
19:20
Yeah. Yeah, I'm not crazy about that, Eddie
19:34
So, I'm going to just do like this. Just pretend stars
19:51
How's that? Great. You know, if I had left a little bit of room in between the blue balls, it would have looked
20:13
like stars. This would be a fun project for the grandkids. Oh, my gosh
20:19
They would have so much fun doing this. I could just see Sullivan and having a blast
20:27
Yes. I'm putting all this candy on here. Yes. So that's right cute
20:34
And. I'm gonna remove a stripe. Okay. To make it official. Oh, okay. Did I put too many stripes
20:45
And I just wanted to eat one too, so. Oh good. So how's that
20:52
That's, that is very, very crude stars. but if you had the right piece of equipment
21:05
with your white, you could just easily do it, but we had the wrong one
21:12
But how's that? I think it's adorable. I think it looks great
21:16
So happy 4th of July, everybody. Now we're just gonna pull these out
21:27
And look at our cake. That's what our cake looks like in there
21:31
It looks like a rainbow. I'm gonna let you do that. Okay
21:36
You scared? Yes, I see half the cake going with it. Well, you know, you're just supposed to stick that
21:44
right up underneath the edge. And I had them pretty deep in there, so
21:51
So there we go, our 4th of July cake. I think that we need, though, to cut it
22:01
You know what? And taste it. I brought for the 4th of July some sparkler candles
22:10
Oh, good! Good, good, good, good. Let's see if we can get it sparkling
22:18
Okay. How fun
22:38
I hope it sparkles. I said I hope it sparkles. There we go
22:42
It's starting. You could use real spark. Uh-oh. Dadgummit. Oh, it is
22:50
It's going to sparkle. It's gonna sparkle. It's gonna sparkle, y'all. Happy 4th of July to everybody
23:00
Hope this will inspire ya. You know, it doesn't have to be bakery gorgeous
23:07
The fact that you got in the kitchen with somebody that you really care about
23:13
and just have fun with it. Look at them. All right, so we can cut this just like we would cut a pie, Eddie
23:23
All right, so let's see what we've got. This cake is supposed to be red, white, and blue, y'all
23:32
There it is. Oh, look how pretty. Look how pretty it is
23:40
There you go, Eddie. You get the first bite. I'll take it
23:49
Like I said, this is just one of those projects that your little children are just gonna love
23:55
getting in the kitchen and doing with you. And they'll never forget the memories
24:01
that they made with mama or grandma or their favorite aunt. Look at that precious cake
24:10
Very good. Now I put coconut flavoring in this one. So I could actually sprinkle coconut on top
24:21
So you know, you're really only limited by your imagination. So just go at it
24:26
I hope a few of these tips have helped y'all though. And I wanna wish y'all a very, very happy
24:33
and safe Fourth of July. I think our sparklers are a dud
24:39
Uh oh. They're very safe sparklers. We could have put real sparklers in them
