This is very, very simple, and it's a really good substitution for french fries

Pretty enough to take a picture of. All right
0:24
Happy New Year, everybody. It's nice to see you. Glad to have you all here
0:29
You know what? We all have food vices. Can anybody relate to this besides me
0:34
I have a couple. I love a good cheeseburger, and I love French fries, y'all
0:40
My whole family makes fun of me because we'll go to restaurants and eat, and I'll say, I will have a salad, and please bring me a big side of French fries
0:47
because I just can't resist them. But you know what? French fries are one of those things that you just can't eat them every day
0:53
and we talk a lot about cooking substitutions and different ways to..
0:58
You can sort of trick yourself if you're just creative. And today what I'm going to show you is how to make a parsnip fry
1:03
Does anybody here make parsnip fries at home? Have you ever seen this before
1:07
And you don't look very excited about it, but believe me, believe me, they're delicious
1:12
and you going to love them Now parsnips are in the carrot family and as you might imagine they loaded with vitamins and minerals particularly vitamins C and K in the parsnips You could either peel them
1:23
or not. So what I've done is I've peeled some, and we'll begin to just cut them into french fry
1:30
shapes. So if you like steak fries, a little bit thicker. I always cook my parsnip fries at 425
1:39
But depending on the thickness of them, you might have to cook them for more or less time, obviously
1:45
If you do, like, a steak fry, that's probably going to cook for 30 to 40 minutes
1:49
But if you do them thinner, a little bit shorter. But what you'll want to do is check on them about 20 minutes in
1:56
and turn them and just make sure that they're not getting brown on only one side
2:00
Not everybody does this, but I certainly do. Nothing goes with French fries like mayonnaise
2:06
That is something. that Paula Deen taught me as a young man
2:11
and that's why I was having to get my jeans in the Husky department at Sears
2:18
All right, so my parsnips are washed, and I got them cut
2:21
Now we'll take some olive oil. The amount is not really specific
2:28
just enough to make sure that you coat them And then my thyme and I just gonna strip some thyme into here You can use parsley if you wanted to Maybe even rosemary might be good
2:43
All right. Now we'll just toss our parsnips in that olive oil
2:51
Mm-hmm. This is very, very simple, and it's a really good substitution for French fries
2:59
So if that's your food vice, you're going to really like this recipe
3:03
The difference is really subtle. This really gives your mouth feel the same satisfaction that you get with a french fry
3:08
And you're cutting the fat and calories in half. Let's put these in the oven
3:14
425. And I think that after about 20 minutes, we'll check them and turn them and make sure they're in good shape
3:19
And maybe cook them for another 10 minutes or so. So in go to the parsnips. all right our parson that's cooked for 20 minutes we turned them a little bit and cooked them for
3:31
another 10 and look at that those are absolutely beautiful i mean it even it even looks like a
3:38
french fry doesn't it and i've got a selection up here y'all i've got real mayonnaise if you like it
3:45
and i also got greek yogurt that i put a little salt and pepper in so you make your selection I like to do all kinds of vegetables in the oven though I like to roast broccoli Do y roast broccoli
3:59
Roast broccoli and cauliflower. These are going to be good, y'all. Sir
4:09
Look at that. Pretty enough to take a picture of. Yeah. Oh, stop
4:17
All right. Look at how beautiful these are. They're very, very delicious and satisfying
4:26
and only 180 calories per serving. Whoo! And you're getting your vegetables
4:33
All right, that's Greek yogurt. There's the fries, everybody. Help yourselves to it
4:41
Thank you. Mmm. All right, my friends, enjoy the parchment fries. They are delicious
4:47
and if you like this recipe, you can find this one and more of my New Year's resolution recipes
