You know, Southern women have so many quick side salads
0:22
This is one, we called it Kari's Lemon Lime Gelatin Salad. My mother made this every Christmas because it's green and it was so good
0:34
I love it with prime rib. Oh, wow. I was not expecting that at all
0:38
Mama would cook a turkey, and it would be so good with that
0:42
Well, this looks pretty simple. What's the time consuming, just the fact that you got gelatin
0:46
Well, you got to let it kind of see it, but that's it. All right
0:49
My mama used two packs of gelatin, and this is like the three-ounce size
0:55
And this is lime and lemon. So just put it in there both, Bobby
1:00
And we're just going to stir that with a whisk until those dissolve
1:07
And I remember my daddy just loving this salad. And Mama would serve it on a little bit of lettuce with a dollop of mayonnaise on top
1:20
All you want to do, Bobby, is just make sure your gelatin is good and dissolved
1:26
We're going to put that right into the refrigerator and let it thicken just ever so slightly
1:33
If we put it in loose, it's going to be so hot that everything would sink right to the bottom
1:38
and we don't want that to happen. You probably want to put this in your refrigerator right away
1:42
Oh, yeah. I put it right in there. Okay. So there we go So just to make sure that it not going to stick on us let do that All right So we using a lime and limelight gelatin
2:01
So in the refrigerator, this goes. It has slightly thickened. Do you not want to wait for it to be completely congealed
2:11
No, we're going to do that later. See just ever so slightly, y'all
2:16
You see that it hadn't gotten in any kind of chunks or anything yet
2:22
So we are using a 20-ounce can of crushed pineapple, and you want to make sure you drain that good
2:28
because you want your salad to be firm. Got it. All right
2:33
I'm going to use a half a cup of evaporated milk. Okay. Which says shake well
2:38
You're not going to put the pineapple in there, baby. In? In here
2:42
Okay, I've never made this before. This is completely new to me. Spread it out
2:47
Just put it in there and stir it all in. Stir it. Okay
2:57
All right, now stir in that. Let's help you along. And you see it's gotten even thicker
3:04
because we added those cold ingredients, so it's really chilling it down
3:09
This is a great salad, too, to serve at St. Patrick's Day
3:13
Ooh. You know, when you're wanting to make everything green. Ah, look at how smart you are
3:19
Yes, so look at that. Yum, yum. We're going to put a half a cup of orange juice
3:25
So we're going to be stirring this thing throughout the whole process, yes? Just for, yeah, just for a second
3:31
And I'm going to be measuring that. And let me ask you this. We drained the pineapple juice, but we added orange juice
3:35
Couldn we have just kept the pineapple juice Well no Well no No No We got the pineapple in there that going to give us the pineapple flavor OK But the orange juice is going to bring another flavor layer
3:49
in there. I'm just naturally inquisitive. I know. And I was curious
3:55
All right. Cottage cheese. One cup of cottage cheese. Yum. Mm-hmm. And now we're going to end up putting this all
4:05
into the refrigerator and letting it cool? Yes. Or get cold. Until it firms up
4:09
How long would you leave it in there? Just a couple hours, son. You know it doesn't take that long
4:14
All right, now we're going to stir in a cup of mayonnaise
4:23
Stir, baby, stir. We just made a left on this recipe. What do you mean
4:28
The mayonnaise was unexpected. Maraschino cherries. And I'm going to find me a little
4:34
Marachino cherries expected, pecans expected. Yes. Mayonnaise unexpected. Mayonnaise is either love it or don't love it
4:42
My mama taught me early on that French fries and mayonnaise are so good together
4:50
I'm taking a half a cup of maraschino cherries, y'all. So pecans and what is this
4:56
That's horseradish and I know you don't like it. Mayonnaise and horseradish in this
5:01
Now, I'm going to rinse my cherries because I don't want this to turn pink
5:08
I want it to stay green. So I'm going to rinse that cherry juice off
5:14
I'm going to take a couple of paper towels to just absorb that juice
5:19
because I don't want to alter the liquids in this. Oh my gosh this reminds me so much of my mother and my daddy Did they put the horseradish in it too Yes I going right by my mama recipe Pecans
5:40
You can use walnuts. I've eaten this, you said. Yes, son. I've been making this since y'all were little bitty boys
5:46
at Christmas. Is that why I hate horseradish to this day? Well, son, I don't know
5:51
A teaspoon of horseradish. And it gives it just a wonderful flavor
5:57
Totally got me with the horseradish. I had no idea that was going to be. Oh, my gosh. This is so good, y'all
6:04
Is it what you remember? Of course it is, son. It is so good
6:15
It really is good. The overall flavor is great. I just, I have a thing with horseradish
6:19
I just don't. Yes, Bobby doesn't like horseradish. So we're going to put that in there and let that chill
6:25
How many have ever had that salad? You've had it. Yes, ma'am
6:29
Now, who fixed that for you? My grandmother. What did grandma serve it with
6:33
It was actually a dessert. Really? Really? Well, it's not super sweet, but it's wonderful with ham, turkey, prime rib, baked chicken
6:46
All right, y'all. Come up here and get y'all some. How do y'all like that, guys
6:55
It's good, isn't it? I'm gonna try to get as many side salads from my childhood
7:03
