- Hey y'all, I got a sweet letter from Nicole Craver.
0:07
She said I just loved watching your cooking show
0:10
on television and I cook a lot of your recipes
0:14
in my kitchen and my husband actually took me
0:18
to our restaurant in Pigeon Forge
0:21
and she said it was just phenomenal.
0:23
And she was just amazed just sitting there
0:26
and looking around saying,
0:27
"I'm really eating in a Paula Deem restaurant."
0:30
That's very sweet, Nicole. Thank you so much.
0:34
And Nicole goes on to ask me
0:37
if I would have a recipe for strawberry trifle.
0:43
So we looked back.
0:44
You know I've got so many recipes
0:46
that are rattling around in my head,
0:48
I can't hardly keep up with 'em.
0:50
Well, sure enough we found the strawberry trifle
0:54
and it really names all the things you could remember
0:58
that your grandmother put in her strawberry trifle.
1:02
So I think this is what you're looking for, Nicole.
1:07
Your grandmother passed a few years ago
1:09
and you know you said you never got the recipe.
1:13
And that's what I wanna encourage all of y'all
1:16
that has the older family members in it,
1:20
you know get all you can from 'em
1:23
because we don't want those recipes to leave us forever.
1:26
So I'm gonna help you out, Nicole,
1:30
and if you're celebrating Labor Day,
1:32
this is gonna be a wonderful, wonderful recipe
1:36
for that holiday.
1:38
So I'm gonna start with sugar.
1:42
Let me, let me see if I can read it off
1:44
in case you have trouble finding the ingredients.
1:49
I've got 'em right here.
1:52
All right, we've got the one large angel food cake
1:55
sitting around here somewhere.
1:59
One eight-ounce package of softened cream cheese.
2:03
One 14 ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
2:08
and one 12 ounce container of thawed frozen whipped topping.
2:13
Now that's where across the board,
2:17
I prefer fresh whipped cream.
2:20
So that's what we've done.
2:22
We have whipped and sweetened some heavy whipping cream
2:27
and I'll use that in the place.
2:30
But if you like the frozen, by all means use it.
2:34
I've got a cup of sugar that I just put in my sauce pan.
2:39
I'm gonna add three tablespoons,
2:42
(cup banging)
2:44
of cornstarch and I'm gonna add
2:49
three tablespoons of a strawberry gelatin
2:54
and to that, I'm gonna add one cup of water.
3:02
All right, I just wanna get my little whisk out
3:09
and whisk it up because the cornstarch
3:13
can be a little lumpy.
3:15
So to our ingredients right here,
3:17
we're gonna add one cup of water.
3:25
So if you're writing these down we go,
3:27
Nicole, you know that there's a link
3:31
to the actual measurements on our recipe.
3:37
So if you don't get it all, just go to the link
3:43
(whisk clinks)
3:45
and we're gonna need about two cups of fresh strawberries.
3:49
And depending on how big they are,
3:54
cut 'em accordingly to the way you think you like 'em,
3:57
like a bite size.
4:00
So we're gonna bring this to a boil
4:06
and that'll take a minute or two.
4:09
All right, we've got our gelatin, our sugar
4:13
and our corn starch in our pot
4:16
and a little, looks like a little piece of fresh thyme
4:19
that I've been using in some recipes.
4:23
So we are just gonna heat this and stir it until it's thick
4:28
and then we have to cool it completely.
4:30
So when I get that far along,
4:34
I'm gonna put this in the refrigerator
4:35
and I'm gonna chill it so we can move on with this recipe.
4:39
Now I'm gonna slice this horizontally
4:47
and I'm going to use my watermelon knife,
4:50
because you really need to use a serrated knife.
4:54
So I'm gonna try to mark this
4:58
in what I feel like will be three maybe equal layers.
5:07
And I'm gonna go ahead, let's see,
5:09
I'm going sit that to the side for a minute
5:13
and I'm gonna go ahead and put our bottom layer in our bowl
5:21
and I'm going dig out (chuckles) what was stuck to the pan.
5:27
All right, and now I'm gonna go ahead
5:32
and slice this other one so that I'll have three pieces,
5:42
but I don't need those yet.
5:45
So I'm gonna just put 'em over there.
5:47
All right, so now we're gonna beat our cream cheese.
6:01
What did I do with my little spatula?
6:05
I don't know what I did with it.
6:08
- [Crew] It's right, it's over here.
6:09
- Oh, okay. Thank you.
6:15
There's a couple over here.
6:18
All right, so that was nice and soft,
6:22
so some got left in the container.
6:28
You know my story and I'm sticking to it, honey.
6:31
(chuckles) Mmm.
6:36
Nice and soft.
6:37
(mixer whirring)
6:49
This condensed milk is gonna need some help.
6:55
Little encouragement.
6:59
This is thick.
7:01
I've seen it where it was not quite this thick before.
7:08
So they got this good and cooked.
7:14
(spatula scraping)
7:20
Okay. (can scrapes)
7:30
(mixer whirring)
7:34
All right, Theresa did my fresh cream for me
7:38
and she said she measured out 12 ounces
7:42
because that's what this particular recipe calls for.
7:49
You getting all this down, Nicole? (chuckles)
7:57
Okay, now we just gonna fold that in.
8:05
All right, Nicole Craver,
8:09
we are fixing to finish this up
8:14
and I hope you love it as much as your memory serves you.
8:19
You know they say sometimes
8:22
the memory is better than the actual thing
8:29
and I think that's kinda true, you know.
8:32
Because the memories usually surround people that you love.
8:36
- [Crew] Um-hm.
8:39
- Okay, Theresa didn't think
8:40
I was gonna be able to get those strawberries in there.
8:45
All right. Ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh.
8:49
All right, so remember I cut our angel food cake in to,
8:58
(spoon clinking)
8:59
I don't like that spoon.
9:02
Afraid I'm gonna lose control,
9:07
like sometimes I normally do.
9:11
All right, so we're doing this in layers
9:27
and let's get a strawberry in the center down there.
9:32
All right, now put a layer of the custard.
9:42
(utensils clinking)
9:43
Use this one again.
9:57
I think you're gonna love it.
10:13
And you know that we wanna get at least three layers
10:20
out of this because we got three layers of the cake.
10:33
Okie doke, last layer.
10:38
Last layer, girly girl.
10:47
I'm gonna change this little digger out
10:52
for my bigger digger. (laughs)
11:07
Now, I would let this sit in the refrigerator
11:14
and let that strawberry glaze,
11:19
you know kind of go through,
11:26
go through the cake.
11:32
And just be mindful that you do it
11:36
as equally as you can with your layers
11:39
so that you come out just right.
11:47
And I think we're gonna come out like just right.
12:02
I don't think that we could ask
12:04
for anything any better than what we have.
12:07
What y'all think? (chuckles)
12:09
- [Crew] Y'all?
12:10
- Y'all, y'all.
12:12
(dishes clattering)
12:15
I got a little (indistinct) juice left.
12:25
Okay, now for the pretty, pretty part. (chuckles)
12:35
All right, I'm just gonna
12:37
tuck a few strawberries in the center kind of like that.
12:49
And I'm kinda turning them,
12:50
so you got some cut parts showing
12:53
and some solid parts showing.
13:02
Eddie just said this was about the last of our mint, y'all,
13:07
before winter peeks in and gets us.
13:21
But you can still get it at your grocery store.
13:28
What do y'all think?
13:31
Take a good look at it.
13:37
Nicole, I hope that this brings back
13:39
good memories for you of when you had your grandmama
13:47
and I had my grandmama.
13:52
Mmm. It's beautiful.
14:00
Just beautiful.
14:04
So don't mess it up, Paula.
14:06
Now, Nicole, I told you
14:10
that I would let this rest in the refrigerator
14:14
and let all that strawberry glaze seep all in that cake,
14:19
but I can't leave without tasting it, can I?
14:23
I can't leave you hanging like that, girl.
14:30
And thank you, thank you for bringing back
14:34
the memory to me of this strawberry trifle.
14:40
It's so easy to make and so delicious.
14:45
So love and best dishes to you, Nicole.
14:49
Like I said, I thank you for the sweet letter
14:52
and remembering a wonderful strawberry trifle.
14:59
Mmm-mmm-mmm. Mmm, you're gonna be a happy girl.
15:06
Now I've got to try to fix where I dug (chuckles)
15:15
and I did it (laughs).
15:20
In the fridge it goes.
15:22
(soft swishing)
15:25
