- Y'all, I have decided that I'm gonna make
0:03
a conscientious effort, to start sharing with y'all
0:06
things that I really love to do in my free time.
0:10
And one of 'em, oh my gosh.
0:13
It started years ago with my Aunt Peggy
0:15
and Kari, when she was a little bitty girl,
0:18
she'd spend every Friday night with me.
0:20
And Aunt Peggy and I loved to go to yard sales.
0:24
We loved it!
0:25
And so Kari would wake up on Saturday morning
0:29
and she'd say, "Paula, we going ard selling?"
0:33
Yes and I'll give you your quarter
0:36
and you can buy whatever you want,
0:37
whatever you can get for that quarter.
0:39
Well a friend of mine, gosh, we've been friends
0:42
now for right at 30 years.
0:46
We're in a beautiful neighborhood here in Savannah
0:50
and her parents passed away.
0:53
So I know.
0:54
Sherry! She just pulled up.
0:56
It is so good to see you.
0:58
- It is wonderful to see you, as well.
1:00
- And I'm so sorry that you have lost your parents.
1:03
- [Sherry] It's tough.
1:04
- It is tough, honey.
1:05
It's been 40 years since I experienced that,
1:09
or maybe 50. - It is hard,
1:11
it is so hard. - It was in 1966,
1:14
my first experience with a parent.
1:16
But anyway, I was just telling everybody,
1:19
I adore, I adore yard sales.
1:26
What's the other word I'm looking for?
1:28
- Estate sales. - Estate sales, yeah.
1:31
So the sale starts tomorrow, but Sherry was kind enough
1:36
to let us come in and just look.
1:38
We can't buy, but we can look.
1:41
- And it's fun to look.
1:42
- It is fun to look. - It is.
1:43
- [Cameraman] And this is called
1:44
the Mint Green Tag Sale Company you chose to use.
1:48
- Yes, let me tell you.
1:49
- [Paula] How did you find find them?
1:50
- In Savannah, Georgia.
1:51
- Oh, they're here?
1:52
They're a local company? - Here in Savannah.
1:53
And you know, Savannah's a big small town.
1:56
- It is.
1:57
- And my husband and I just moved to Idaho a year ago.
2:01
And about that time, we were reaching out
2:03
to estate sale companies.
2:04
And my brother, Michael, said well, I found one.
2:08
And it responded, not a lot of 'em
2:10
would respond for whatever reason.
2:11
She said so let's interview him.
2:13
So we did. - Uh-huh.
2:14
- And Dawn, the wife, Dawn Kuchi,
2:18
she said, we were talking, just conversation.
2:21
I said, yeah, we just moved to Hope.
2:22
She says, well, I live in Hope.
2:24
And I said, well, I live on Central Avenue.
2:26
She says, I live on Central Avenue.
2:28
- No! - And I said
2:29
okay, where do you live?
2:31
Literally across the street.
2:32
- No, no. - Yes, yes.
2:34
- So you hadn't gotten to know any of your neighbors yet?
2:36
- No, not at that point.
2:38
So it was so fun. What a small world.
2:41
But they have done beautiful job.
2:44
So, again, Mint Green has done
2:47
such a beautiful job organizing things.
2:49
- Wow. - And mom loved-
2:52
- Look at all these cookbooks. - cookbooks.
2:53
- I know it. - She had rather
2:54
read a cookbook than a novel.
2:56
- [Paula] A novel, me too.
2:58
And I read 'em like they're a novel.
2:59
- Yeah, and we'd ask her mom,
3:01
why are you reading so many cookbooks?
3:03
And she says, well, you never know
3:05
how many different ways to make the same dish.
3:07
- [Paula] That's exactly right.
3:08
- And she said, and the stories that they put
3:11
in these cookbooks are so interesting.
3:14
And, so we have a lot of Paula Deen cookbooks around here.
3:17
- [Paula] Oh my goodness.
3:19
- Carl Schumacher, my ex-husband,
3:21
you know? - He is still
3:23
my CPA to this day. - Yes he is.
3:25
And my mom was such a fan of yours,
3:26
that you always gave her one of your cookbooks.
3:29
- Oh.
3:29
- So we have lots of Paula Deen.
3:31
But there is some that, the one that,
3:34
I meant to pull it out for you,
3:36
that was really, really kind of neat.
3:40
- I'm seeing if I can see.
3:43
- Here's an old one, A Betty Crocker, Cookin' Easy.
3:46
- I love-
3:48
- Isn't that sweet? - I love these kind
3:50
of cookbooks from from like appliances
3:55
and... - Yes, yes.
3:57
- Things like this.
3:58
- And you know how they did their cookbooks
4:00
back then, the you know two-one.
4:03
- [Paula] Yes, yes.
4:03
I love it. - Didn't use
4:04
a lot of color back then.
4:06
When I got married, I had one baby shower,
4:08
I was 18 years old and nobody wanted me to do it.
4:11
So hence, I only had one shower.
4:14
And I got one cookbook and it's my Better Homes and Garden.
4:19
- Isn't that something?
4:20
- And it sits in a reverent place in my kitchen.
4:24
I adore that book.
4:27
So if I got it at 18, I've had it how many years was that?
4:31
I'm not real good at math.
4:31
But you're not so good at math either.
4:33
- Who wants to count? - I'm 77 now.
4:35
- No way!
4:36
- [Paula] Yes.
4:37
- Well you're looking (indistinct).
4:39
- And I got it at 18.
4:40
Well, thank you honey.
4:41
High mileage. - I said good cooking
4:43
and good living.
4:46
Look at this one, from the Christian Church.
4:49
- [Paula] Oh, and the church books.
4:50
- One of the church books.
4:51
What's the date of this one? - are so good.
4:54
It doesn't say right there.
4:55
Yeah, there it does.
4:57
1960, is that a eight?
5:00
- [Sherry] Now you're gonna make me put my glasses on.
5:03
- I could never do that Sherry without
5:05
- Yeah. - my glasses.
5:07
- Just- - Church cookbook
5:08
are incredible,
5:10
- They are, they are. - because I've always been
5:12
one of those kinda cooks, those kind of girls
5:16
that I love what women do at home.
5:20
I don't care too much for that Nouve
5:24
sea hollow. - Tofu stuck in everything.
5:26
- Yeah, let's see how complicated we can make this
5:29
and see how many ingredients we can put in it
5:32
that you can't pronounce. - That's right.
5:34
Leave out the tofu.
5:35
- Yes.
5:36
Uh-oh. Look, look what I see.
5:41
- [Sherry] I tell you, there's Paula Deen everywhere.
5:44
- I love it. - It's kinda like
5:46
an Easter egg hunt, Paula.
5:47
There's even Paula under here,
5:48
this here. - I know. Oh my gosh.
5:51
Let me look over here.
5:54
- [Sherry] She did, and she was a great cook,
5:55
she really was.
5:56
- [Paula] Oh my gosh, look.
5:58
- [Sherry] And my grandma, her mother, woo.
6:00
- [Paula] Oh no, that's Damon Fowler's book.
6:02
And Mary Max Cafe. - Oh yours is in there.
6:05
- [Paula] Yes, I see it.
6:07
And Magnolia, who is that?
6:08
I dunno that person.
6:11
- [Sherry] That's one of your first ones.
6:13
- [Paula] Yes, yes, yes, yes.
6:15
That's the original.
6:17
- [Sherry] Yes it is.
6:18
- [Paula] Ooh, cooking with Coca-Cola.
6:20
I thought that's great.
6:22
Yes.
6:25
I signed this,
6:26
- Yes you did. - in July of '97.
6:30
And I'm so glad that at the time
6:33
I was not asked to personalize it
6:37
because, oh look, she's got a note by the banana pudding
6:40
and the sweet potato casserole.
6:41
- Oh the banana pudding, of course
6:42
you have to put a note by the banana puddin'.
6:44
That's the best stuff ever.
6:46
- Oh, that's just wonderful.
6:48
That makes me so happy.
6:50
- Well, it makes us happy that you wanted to film here
6:53
because mom was...
6:54
- I think this is just wonderful,
6:57
because I get so involved in filming
7:00
in my kitchen that I don't-
7:03
- [Sherry] Well it's fun to go to other peoples'.
7:05
- [Paula] It is so much fun.
7:06
- [Sherry] It is.
7:07
- [Paula] Now where, that was where y'all ate?
7:11
- We've had so many Thanksgiving, birthday
7:15
dinners right here. - Right there?
7:16
- This is where all the stories get told.
7:19
- Look at all the books over there.
7:21
I bet that's more cookbooks.
7:22
I see my cookbooks.
7:23
- [Sherry] You see another one over there?
7:25
- [Paula] Uh-huh, I think.
7:26
- [Sherry] There's one, you can see right there.
7:28
- The Lady and Sons two.
7:30
- [Cameraman] Two of them on the end.
7:32
- Oh, okay. - Yeah these two
7:33
on the end, hard backs. - Oh, here's another one.
7:38
- [Paula] And Sherry, the celebrates book,
7:41
you have one of those, it's the next to the end.
7:45
- [Cameraman] The one with the orange
7:46
binding. - Right there.
7:47
The orange. - This way?
7:48
- Nope, this way. - Uh-uh.
7:49
- Right there, the orange. - This one?
7:50
- [Paula] Uh-huh.
7:51
Is that celebrates?
7:52
- Yes. - I love that book.
7:54
If you don't have that at home,
7:55
you may wanna consider keeping it,
7:57
because I don't think it's any longer in print.
8:01
- [Sherry] Is that right?
8:02
Well, this was- - But-
8:03
- [Sherry] This one was given by my daughter.
8:06
- Oh, wonderful.
8:08
- Yep, I love it.
8:10
- Oh, even Michael signed it.
8:12
- Michael signed it, yep.
8:13
- All right now I want to see if y'all have
8:18
this book. - There's
8:18
the double set there.
8:19
- Yep, yep.
8:23
All right, let's see.
8:27
The one I'm lookin' for.
8:28
- [Sherry] Well there's more, if it's not here.
8:30
- I do want you to keep it,
8:34
because it's no longer in print.
8:37
And that's Kitchen Classics.
8:40
The Lady and Sons' Kitchen Classics.
8:42
- [Sherry] Well let's keep an eye out
8:43
for it. - Yes, yes.
8:47
That was, that's probably my favorite.
8:51
That's definitely my favorite one of the first books.
8:54
Okay. Oh, look at here.
8:58
Look, Eddie.
9:02
Country cookin' makes ya good lookin'.
9:06
Bobby signed it, Jamie signed it, and I signed it.
9:10
We didn't put the, wait Jamie did, 2005.
9:17
Right, and let's see this one.
9:19
This one didn't get signed.
9:22
Southern Bells ring louder.
9:26
We prove that, don't we, Sherry?
9:28
- [Sherry] Oh yes.
9:29
There's nothing wrong with being heard.
9:30
- No. No, no, no.
9:33
How many days is your sale going on?
9:36
- Just two.
9:38
Tomorrow from 10 to-
9:40
- [Paula] Are you gonna be here?
9:42
- Oh heavens no.
9:43
- I was gonna say honey,
9:45
I wouldn't come near this place.
9:46
- No, this is, it's been tough.
9:49
You know, these are things that mom and dad loved dearly
9:51
and- - Yes, it's best that you
9:53
not see 'em walk out the door.
9:55
- [Sherry] They told me a funny story, when I told them
9:57
that there's just no way I can be here.
9:59
And they said yeah, one estate sale,
10:01
they had a niece or a cousin or someone
10:04
sat on the couch and cried the entire time.
10:06
- No! - Well that would be me.
10:08
- [Paula] I know. I know it's hard.
10:10
- [Sherry] So now I just hope these treasures
10:13
that have been loved for so long
10:15
be loved by someone else. - I hope so too.
10:17
I hope so too,
10:18
because that makes it easier.
10:21
- [Cameraman] She loved carousels.
10:23
- She loved everything- - She did love carousels.
10:25
- Yes, she loved (indistinct).
10:29
- [Paula] And Nancy Hillis, The Vamp of Savannah.
10:35
She was one of the main characters
10:37
in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
10:39
And she and Joe, Joe played the piano and Nancy sang.
10:46
And they opened, what was the name
10:48
of the place that they opened?
10:51
- [Sherry] Ah, was it Hard, yep-
10:53
- Hard Hearted Hannahs. - Hard Hearted Hannahs.
10:56
(pages rustle)
10:59
- And you know, all the characters are gone.
11:04
All of 'em are gone.
11:08
Oh my gosh. They're so cute.
11:12
So cute.
11:13
And you know, I love a snow globe.
11:16
I just love 'em.
11:18
But oh my gosh, everything is so pretty!
11:28
- [Sherry] Thank you.
11:29
- And I know you wish you could take all of it home,
11:31
but then you'd have to move outta your house, wouldn't you?
11:33
- [Sherry] I'd definitely have to get a bigger house.
11:37
But we took pictures and we've gone through
11:39
and we, you know, we've cried.
11:40
My siblings and I have laughed together
11:42
and cried together.
11:43
- [Paula] But hopefully y'all have taken out some things,
11:46
- We have. - just for y'all.
11:48
- One of the fun things was
11:50
when we were pulling things out of the attic,
11:54
there was a box of all kinds of stuff.
11:58
And mom had saved my first grade dress.
12:02
- No!
12:03
- And, it was amongst all this stuff,
12:05
and it was-
12:06
- Pristine?
12:07
- Yeah.
12:08
I don't know how, but it was.
12:10
But that was kind of cool.
12:11
You know, that was the dress I wore
12:12
on my first day of school, and so-
12:14
- Sp please have it framed.
12:16
- I do have it, I will frame it.
12:19
- My decorator, one day I was not home,
12:22
I think I was on the road working.
12:24
And she was going through my drawers
12:26
and she found my old cheerleading outfit.
12:28
And she framed it. - So you really were
12:30
a cheerleader? - Yes.
12:31
I mean I got the proof.
12:33
It's hanging, it's a big one. - Aw.
12:36
- And it's hanging in our house right now-
12:38
- That's you, that's who
12:39
you are. - Goin' up our stairs.
12:40
- That's part of who we are.
12:42
- Yes, yes.
12:43
- And she saved her majorette costume.
12:44
- Oh. - I remember,
12:45
we took my sister out to dance
12:47
at Marilyn (Indistinct's) dance studio.
12:49
And that's a big part of our growing up.
12:50
And Marilyn always had the students
12:56
wear red sequin costumes.
12:58
And it was perfect,
13:00
'cause we always marched in the Christmas parade.
13:02
You know, my baton then was
13:02
this big. - About that big.
13:04
- And so I found my very first majorette costume
13:08
and it's this big. - Okay,
13:10
I was gonna ask you.
13:11
Now I'm older than you, but I was six years,
13:18
I think I turned, yeah I turned six years old
13:21
and Bubba was not born yet.
13:24
I was seven years older than Bubba.
13:26
And it was the best Christmas.
13:27
And there was a doll that I just wanted so badly.
13:30
- Awe. - The Mary
13:31
Heartline majorette doll.
13:34
- Ah. - Did you ever have one?
13:35
- I did not have one.
13:36
- Oh, that's 'cause you was too young.
13:40
- But, also pulling stuff out of the attic,
13:43
in a big box, were Madame Alexander dolls.
13:48
- No!
13:49
- And my sister and I had no idea
13:51
what happened to those dolls,
13:52
because the house we grew up in
13:54
and that- - Were they in
13:55
the polka dot boxes?
13:56
- Originally, but we didn't keep 'em in the boxes.
13:59
But they have just a little bit
14:01
of discoloring under the little skirts,
14:03
underneath the slips underneath.
14:04
- I wish your mom had kept them in their original boxes.
14:07
- I know. We didn't know to do that.
14:09
But it was so funny finding those,
14:11
because I remember my mom said
14:14
all right, Santa brought you a Madame Alexander.
14:16
And you can put it on your dresser
14:17
but you can't touch it. - Can't play with it.
14:18
Can't play with it, can't play-
14:20
- Like what good is this,
14:21
if I can't touch it? (Paula laughs)
14:22
- Oh my gosh. - But now,
14:23
you know, we found all these dolls and-
14:26
- Did you keep some of them?
14:27
- I brought all the dolls home.
14:28
- Good, good. - I don't know
14:29
what I'm gonna do with them.
14:30
- I know it.
14:31
You know my Aunt Peggy, you know my Aunt Peggy?
14:33
- Yes, oh I love Aunt Peggy.
14:34
- And uncle, thank you, 94 and still kicking.
14:37
- Isn't that wonderful?
14:38
- Yes.
14:39
She and my Uncle George own the toy house,
14:42
- Okay. - in Albany.
14:43
And it was before Kmart and Walmart
14:48
and all the big box stores-
14:51
- Yes, yes. - that put the little men
14:52
out of business.
14:54
But Madam Alexandra dolls was really big.
14:58
You could always come there and find it.
15:02
And I think Aunt Peggy might still have some stashed.
15:05
- I hope she does.
15:06
- But I'm so glad
15:07
that y'all opted to keep those.
15:09
- And the thing that I noticed was
15:11
the stitching is still perfect.
15:13
The thread hasn't even rotted.
15:15
I mean, it's amazing.
15:16
- Well they were quality dolls.
15:18
- My dolls are 55 years old.
15:21
So, I was telling the story earlier how we found Mint Green.
15:25
- Right, right. - And it was a lucky find.
15:27
- And these two ladies are Mint Green.
15:30
- That's right.
15:31
- And your husband,
15:32
- Yes, Marshall. - Marshall.
15:33
- That's right. - It's a family business.
15:34
- Yeah. - So how long
15:35
have you had Mint Green?
15:37
- We have owned it for five years,
15:40
and we worked with the people that owned it before us
15:43
for about four years before they sold it
15:44
to us. - Well I think
15:45
this is a much needed occupation because this is hard work.
15:53
I don't know how many yard sales I've ever had
15:55
and Lord knows I can't number how many I've been to.
16:00
But this is hard work. - Well you see
16:01
how organized is it.
16:02
- Yes. - It's beautiful.
16:03
- This is hard work. So my hats off to y'all.
16:06
And if you live in the Savannah area y'all
16:10
check out Mint Green.
16:11
We'll put a link on this-
16:14
- Great, thank you so much. - video.
16:17
- [Cameraman] Yeah 'cause you have a sale
16:18
almost every weekend. - Yes,
16:20
different areas in Savannah.
16:22
- Yeah we're (indistinct).
16:25
- [Paula] Oh my goodness, that will be another good one.
16:27
- But this one is quite an unusual,
16:28
special one. - This one has got
16:29
a lot of attention already.
16:30
- It really is. - As you can tell.
16:31
- We had someone come to wait outside.
16:33
She said is it okay if I wait 24 hours before?
16:36
And I was like you're more than welcome to.
16:39
So they're very excited. - Eddie
16:40
used be in this business, before he and-
16:44
- Got to you. - I adopted him and-
16:47
- [Cameraman] About 10 years ago.
16:48
I used to do this. This was my weekend thing to do.
16:50
- [Paula] So Eddie said there's gonna be people
16:52
already parked out at the apartment.
16:54
- Well, I can honestly say from a family member perspective,
16:58
and I know my brother Michael and my sister Dickie
17:00
would definitely agree, as we were
17:03
saying earlier, going through everything
17:05
and pulling out the doors,
17:07
and I know I went through that drawer
17:09
and look, there's something else.
17:10
And things just kept multiplying
17:12
and growing and more and more.
17:14
And it was chaotic in here.
17:16
My brother said, my nickname is Toots,
17:20
but Toots, that place is-
17:21
- [Paula] Did you do a lot of tootin'
17:22
when you were little, Sherry?
17:23
- Well actually that's the shorter version
17:26
of the original nickname he gave me,
17:28
which was tootsie roller.
17:30
- Tootsie roller. - 'Cause I loved
17:32
tootsie rolls when I was a little kid.
17:33
- Oh. - I can understand that.
17:35
- The toots.
17:36
- And then it went to Tootsie,
17:39
now it's lovingly Toots.
17:40
(Paula laughs)
17:42
This is Toots.
17:43
That house is a disaster.
17:44
- I love that. - So it is chaos,
17:45
no worries. - I love that.
17:49
- Mint Green is gonna save the day.
17:52
- I love that story,
17:53
Sherry. - They have saved the day.
17:55
- I wanna wish y'all luck.
17:57
- Thank you so much. - And I wanna thank
17:58
all three of y'all for letting us in
18:01
and doing this filming,
18:02
because I'm trying to take people
18:04
out my kitchen for things that I really love to do.
18:06
- Yeah. - And this here
18:07
is one of 'em. - Well awesome.
18:10
- I can truthfully say, though, I probably won't be
18:13
able to get back in tomorrow, but today has been wonderful.
18:17
So, well this will already happen by the time this airs.
18:21
So there's no good reason for me
18:24
to invite everybody to something
18:25
that's gonna be gone in three weeks.
18:27
- That's right.
18:28
- [Cameraman] No, but check out their website.
18:29
- Yes, yes, yes. - Do check out the website.
18:30
- Every weekend. - 'Cause we are busy folks.
18:32
- Yes. - Thank you so much.
18:33
- Thank you. - And I thank y'all.
18:35
Y'all add a lot of value to our town.
18:38
- Absolutely.
18:42
Hey, y'all, it's Paula Deen.
