- Guess what y'all,
0:03
I think every one of my grandchildren
0:05
are outta school for the summer,
0:07
starting tomorrow.
0:10
Now the triplets are already out in cloud saying,
0:13
"What are we gonna do?
0:15
"What are we gonna do?"
0:15
But what, three months.
0:19
John and Henry get out tomorrow
0:22
and I think Maddie gets out tomorrow too.
0:25
So it's gonna be a long, hot summer.
0:29
The children are going to get in the habit of sleeping late.
0:33
So I mean, like, they're missing breakfast
0:36
so I can do brunch for 'em
0:40
and that can kind of get two meals in one,
0:42
their breakfast and their lunch.
0:44
And the recipe that I'm sharing with y'all today
0:47
is very good.
0:50
I think it came out of my Paula Deen baking cookbook.
0:55
There's so many wonderful recipes in that book, y'all.
0:59
I do hope that y'all will eventually have it
1:03
in your repertoire 'cause it's so very good.
1:07
So this is a sausage, egg, and cheese
1:11
braided breakfast loaf,
1:16
I don't know what else to call it.
1:18
But I'm gonna start by cooking my sausage
1:26
and it calls for three-fourths of a pound,
1:28
but, you know, what am I gonna do
1:29
with that extra little quarter?
1:31
I'm gonna go ahead and use the whole roll.
1:36
So I'm just gonna
1:43
put this into our skillet that's heating up
1:47
and I wanna leave this,
1:49
I don't want to just scramble it to death.
1:53
I'd kinda like to leave it in,
1:57
you know, a nice bite size.
2:01
So,
2:08
we'll try not to break it up, you know, too very much.
2:16
Michael Grover loves this kind of sausage.
2:21
He loves it.
2:24
So have I shot a video
2:27
since we've been back from the cruise?
2:30
- Yes.
2:33
- Well, if you've never been on a Disney cruise,
2:36
grandmamma and granddaddy with those children,
2:40
you really must go
2:41
because it's wonderful to see this through their eyes.
2:48
I looked one time at Millie and you know
2:50
there was staircases,
2:52
and a big atrium,
2:54
and the princesses were,
2:56
some was on this level,
2:58
some was down here,
2:59
and some were just walking around.
3:01
And I looked over at Amelia
3:05
and she was talking to herself,
3:07
she wasn't talking to anybody
3:09
and she was looking up and she said,
3:13
"She's so beautiful."
3:17
So Amelia's definitely going to be the girly girl
3:22
out of those two.
3:23
And then (laughs),
3:25
that precious Ollie, she's tough,
3:30
she's a tough little girl.
3:34
Kind of a little bit of tomboyish
3:37
but she loved Mickey Mouse and Goofy
3:42
which says so much about her personality.
3:44
You know, Millie towards the perfect ones,
3:48
and then Ollie liking those silly ones,
3:52
and Linton looked all over that ship
3:54
for his Marvel characters
3:58
but they didn't have 'em.
4:00
- [Teresa] I hope they gone do a cruise one.
4:01
- You know, that would be great.
4:03
But there was a Dr. No or somebody on there,
4:06
but let me tell y'all what my favorite part, uh oh,
4:11
of the cruise was.
4:12
Have I talked about this?
4:13
I don't wanna keep repeating myself
4:15
'cause I can't remember if I have or not.
4:17
But anyway, the shows were incredible.
4:27
The first one they did was "Aladdin",
4:33
which those kids are so talented.
4:35
I mean they could be on Broadway this very moment.
4:39
And the guy that played the Genie, oh my gosh.
4:43
You know those kids when they're not on stage
4:46
they're in other parts of the ship working,
4:48
they don't quit working
4:50
and they all have different talents.
4:53
And somebody said, well it was Claud,
4:57
she said, "That's the guy that played the Genie."
5:01
I said, "Oh, you're kidding."
5:02
So I went over to him,
5:04
I said, "Are you the genie?"
5:06
And he said, "Yes."
5:08
I said, "If I had an Academy Award to give to you right now,
5:12
"I'd give it to you."
5:14
He was so, so good.
5:18
And the young man that played Aladdin,
5:21
every one of 'em are just super, super talented kids.
5:27
And the next one was "Frozen",
5:31
nearly had a fit over that one.
5:34
And then the last one,
5:36
the finale, was "Believe".
5:39
Oh, it was so good.
5:43
It was so good.
5:45
All right, so do y'all see how I'm leaving this in kind of,
5:50
like I said, just nice bites.
5:53
I don't want it to look disintegrated, you know.
6:02
I feel the same way when I'm making my chili
6:05
and things like that.
6:07
I like to keep it in bite size pieces
6:15
rather than like just scrambled to death, you know?
6:21
All right, so I have seven eggs over here
6:26
and I'm gonna beat those up
6:30
because after we get through browning the sausage,
6:33
the sausage (laughs).
6:36
I'm going to scramble the eggs in that same pot.
6:44
And we'll wanna cook this
6:47
leaving it in like large curds.
6:51
You know, we don't wanna beat it to death either.
6:54
So I'm gonna go ahead and add my salt,
6:58
my thyme, my dried thyme,
7:01
teaspoon of black pepper,
7:04
and then I'll melt this little bit of butter
7:07
to scramble our eggs in.
7:10
All right, I think that this is done enough,
7:14
and I'll show y'all
7:15
so you can see about what sizes I left that sausage in.
7:22
And I was just telling Teresa,
7:25
I'm surprised it was just hardly any fat
7:30
in that sausage at all.
7:35
So I'm gonna turn my eye back on,
7:38
I'm going to plop in my butter.
7:43
And remember, I've already put all the seasoning in my eggs,
7:48
which was the thyme, salt and pepper.
7:52
That was it, wasn't it?
7:53
Yeah, thyme, salt and pepper,
7:55
and then the butter in the skillet.
7:59
So I know I'm repeating myself,
8:07
but large curds,
8:08
I'm gonna try to cook this in large curds.
8:11
All right, so I'm gonna watch those eggs real close y'all.
8:19
And,
8:24
we are almost done putting together
8:27
this braided sausage, egg, and cheese loaf.
8:35
Okay, y'all, so soft curds of eggs.
8:40
Now I'm gonna, so they won't keep cooking,
8:44
I'm gonna pour them into that bowl.
8:50
And now we have got to start talking about
8:56
the pastry that we're gonna use.
9:09
And that is, Teresa had unwrapped these,
9:14
so I just very loosely wrapped this back around here
9:20
so y'all could see.
9:21
It's Crescent Dough Sheets.
9:28
So I had never seen these
9:32
because I usually just use the puff pastry, you know,
9:36
I just keep that one puff pastry.
9:38
But this is really great.
9:42
Okay, so for our pastry,
9:46
I kind of got it as straight as I could
9:51
and one end was kind of funky like
9:54
so I just cut it to even it up.
9:59
Alright, so this is gonna start our braiding.
10:02
So we are gonna fold these over
10:08
and it's gonna look like
10:12
our dough has been braided
10:17
and it's much easier than actually braiding, braiding.
10:22
All right, so we've got our eggs here,
10:26
we've got our cheese.
10:27
Let's see how much cheese did this-
10:29
- The whole thing. - The whole thing.
10:31
I may save a little bit
10:34
just in case I wanna do a little on the top.
10:37
And we've got our sausage.
10:41
You watching John
10:42
so you can make this for mama?
10:45
Maybe Mother's day or her birthday.
10:48
Her birthday is actually Saturday.
10:51
- It is? - Yes.
10:54
Yes your mama is,
10:58
I can't remember how old she's turning,
10:59
she probably wouldn't want me to tell it anyway, so.
11:03
All right, so you see what I'm doing John?
11:06
I have our eggs,
11:08
our sausage,
11:11
and our cheese.
11:15
And I'm just trying to fold that together.
11:19
And this is enough to make two loaves.
11:25
All right, so I'm gonna take this.
11:27
Yeah, come on in so you can see baby.
11:31
So we're just gonna put this right down the center,
11:40
just like that.
11:43
- It smells good. - It does.
11:45
Well you gonna be able to have some in just a minute.
11:52
Okay, let's go back down here
11:54
and put a little more right there.
11:59
So you're so good at putting things together,
12:04
maybe you can help me braid.
12:07
All right, now we're gonna start
12:11
just tucking this over,
12:14
this piece over like that,
12:17
and then we're just gonna come in.
12:22
- [John] It looks like a big taco or something.
12:23
- Uh huh, it does.
12:25
Would you like to do the braiding?
12:27
- Sure. - Okay, wash your hands.
12:32
And then I'm happy to have your help
12:35
because John draws very, very well.
12:40
He has a good eye for things like this,
12:45
he puts together hundreds of Legos.
12:52
Isn't that your favorite John?
12:54
The Legos, out of all those things you put together.
12:56
He could spend hours,
12:58
he and Matthew both could spend hours
13:04
putting Legos together.
13:06
Alright, so go over there baby
13:10
and I'm right here with you.
13:18
Yeah, you know what a braids supposed to look like.
13:21
Alright, let's see, let's make it like that,
13:26
you know, kind of, yeah,
13:29
so it looked like it's braided not not straight across
13:32
but you know, kind of that direction.
13:37
- Oh. - You got it.
13:40
You got it.
13:41
Now while you're doing that,
13:42
I'm gonna come over here
13:44
and I'm gonna take our last egg that we had.
13:49
Let me get a fork.
13:58
Oh, you doing pretty work.
14:02
Look at that boy doing pretty, pretty work.
14:09
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
14:13
Like you, it's beautiful.
14:17
You need to lift that one a little wide.
14:19
So there we go,
14:22
I'll just make it a little bit shorter.
14:23
All right, now here John we've got our egg,
14:26
we've got salt.
14:29
You wanna pour in there? - All of it?
14:31
- Uh huh, all of it.
14:33
This is onion powder.
14:39
Yeah, there you go.
14:43
You just have to get in there with your finger.
14:45
Yeah.
14:48
Sometimes it dries out pretty quick.
14:52
Garlic powder.
14:58
Perfect.
15:00
Poppy seeds.
15:06
And sesame seeds.
15:11
Perfect.
15:14
Perfect.
15:15
- Perfect - Perfect.
15:18
- All right, now we're just gonna
15:19
scramble that up together real good.
15:23
And we're gonna kind of paint this on but,
15:30
let me get that egg beaten up there pretty good.
15:34
All right, so let's see.
15:37
Oh goodness, cut some of those back too deep.
15:40
That's all right, it'll just ooze out.
15:44
Now we're gonna preheat our oven John.
15:48
Listen, since you're such a good painter, go for it.
15:51
Why am I doing that
15:53
when I'm standing here with a painter?
15:57
So what?
16:00
- I still got that one open.
16:02
- Oh, you got it open.
16:06
Okay, then you'll just pinch it back together.
16:08
- It's kind of like play dough.
16:09
- Yeah, so just be gentle,
16:11
you know, be gentle with your brush.
16:15
And then we're gonna go ahead and put this in the oven
16:20
and I'm gonna make the other one,
16:23
but I'm gonna just put it together
16:26
and put it in the refrigerator
16:28
so I can cook it later on as needed.
16:32
And all I'll have to do is take my one egg,
16:39
my onion powder, garlic powder,
16:42
poppy seed and sesame seed,
16:45
put that together and then brush it
16:48
and it's ready to go in the oven.
16:49
So that's the beauty of this recipe.
16:53
You know, if you were having weekend company
16:55
and you wanted to have
16:56
a nice little brunch or breakfast ready for 'em,
16:59
you can have this right in the refrigerator.
17:01
Right? - Yeah.
17:05
- My Aunt Anne likes to paint a lot.
17:07
- Huh?
17:08
- My Aunt Anne likes to paint a lot.
17:09
- She does like to paint a lot.
17:11
And your Aunt Anne is a very colorful artist.
17:17
She likes using bold, bright colors, doesn't she?
17:21
- Yeah.
17:22
- All right, so this is going in our oven, y'all,
17:24
a preheated 400 degree oven,
17:27
and yeah, get some of those sesame seeds on it.
17:33
For about 12 to 15 minutes.
17:36
You ready big boy. - Yeah.
17:38
- Couldn't have done it without you, John.
17:40
- [Teresa] Give it to me.
17:42
- Our braided sausage, and egg, and cheese loaf
17:46
just came out beautiful y'all.
17:49
I wasn't so sure about that dough in that can,
17:52
but you know, it worked out
17:56
and I've let this really cool very good.
17:59
And you know, the recipe actually makes two.
18:03
So I went through step four with the other one.
18:09
All I'll have to do if I wanna cook that one tomorrow
18:13
is pull it out,
18:15
brush it with the egg, the sesame seed,
18:18
the poppy seed, the garlic, and onion powder
18:21
and it'll be ready to go.
18:23
So look at this.
18:29
That bread looks mighty tasty.
18:35
And it is tasty.
18:40
I let it cool off a little too much.
18:43
- [Teresa] Crusty for breakfast.
18:47
- But you could so easy pop this into this,
18:52
this air fryer, and have it piping hot again.
18:56
Delicious y'all.
19:00
So surprise your weekend guest with a-
19:06
- Breakfast braid. - With a nice breakfast braid.
19:09
That's right.
19:11
Thank y'all.
19:12
Happy summer to everyone.
