- [Theresa] Well, hello, Miss Paula.
0:02
- Hello, Theresa.
0:04
- [Theresa] Listen, we're gonna-
0:05
- And all my friends out there.
0:07
- [Theresa] Well, you made an announcement last week
0:10
about a cookbook.
0:10
- I did, I did, I did.
0:12
- [Theresa] So why don't you tell us a little bit
0:13
about this cookbook that's coming out.
0:15
- I would love to tell everybody what it's about, Theresa.
0:19
It's really about my life before the kitchen,
0:24
during the kitchen, and after the kitchen,
0:28
in my kitchen life and my life that I lived.
0:32
So it's gonna be,
0:37
you'll probably gonna be surprised
0:39
because, you know, I hate to say it's a cookbook,
0:41
but it is a cookbook,
0:42
but it's just a cookbook with a lot of stories.
0:45
(Theresa laughs)
0:47
- [Theresa] So when does the book actually,
0:50
how can you order the book,
0:51
and when is it actually going to ship?
0:53
'Cause we're doing pre-orders.
0:54
- Okay, and that's a real important question,
0:57
and I'll be repeating it probably
0:59
for another couple of months.
1:01
The only way you can get this book, y'all,
1:04
is to pre-order
1:06
because we're self-publishing it,
1:08
and we are gonna print exact number of orders that we have.
1:15
So if you pre-order, you are assured a book.
1:20
If you don't pre-order,
1:22
I can't tell you if you'll ever have an opportunity
1:25
to have it.
1:26
So it's really, really, really important
1:29
that you pre-order,
1:30
and you can go to pauladeenbook.com
1:36
and place your order there.
1:38
And we also have a phone number now.
1:39
We gave the phone number out the other day,
1:42
and someone called and said, you know,
1:44
it was not the right number.
1:46
So you really need a pen and a piece of paper
1:49
to write this number down correctly.
1:52
And Theresa is gonna share that number with you.
1:56
And if you would, Theresa, do it slow and twice.
2:00
- [Theresa] Okay, it's 1-800-361-8059.
2:10
And again, that's 1-800-361-8059,
2:17
but I'll be saying it again at the end, anyway.
2:19
- Okay, perfect, thank you. - So let's talk some fun facts
2:21
about the book. - Yes, question.
2:23
- [Theresa] One of the questions that I think is,
2:25
how old were you when you did your,
2:26
you've done probably 16 cookbooks now,
2:28
how old were you when you? - I think it was 18.
2:30
- [Theresa] Ooh, we did a couple of reprints.
2:32
We did a couple of reprints of different ones.
2:34
But how old were you when you wrote your first cookbook?
2:38
- You know, it's so funny,
2:39
when I graduated from high school finally, (laughs)
2:44
they didn't think I could read a book,
2:46
(Theresa laughing)
2:47
much less write a book. (laughs)
2:50
How old was I?
2:52
My book that I wrote and self-published
2:55
came out in 1997,
2:58
and I was born in '47,
3:00
so that would've made me 50, 50 years old.
3:05
Yes, and I started the business when I was 42.
3:11
I was 40 when we moved to Savannah
3:13
and started the business at 42
3:15
with the help of two precious sons, Jamie and Bobby.
3:19
And so in a span of eight years.
3:25
- Wow. - My first cookbook was born,
3:27
which I felt like it was pretty good,
3:29
but I had such a sense of urgency about me
3:32
because of my age.
3:35
I felt like this is my last shot
3:38
to better my children's life and my life,
3:44
and the life of people that I loved.
3:47
So yeah, 50 years old.
3:51
- [Theresa] So this could potentially be your last cookbook?
3:56
- Oh, you think so?
3:58
(Paula laughs) - You never know Paula.
3:59
You never know, but let's- - No, you never know.
4:01
But there is a good chance
4:02
that you're correct about the cookbook.
4:05
I feel like I do have another book in me.
4:07
It just might not be a cookbook.
4:09
- [Theresa] So if this is,
4:11
just let's say it is your last cookbook,
4:13
what kind of legacy do you wanna leave for your,
4:16
I'ma say your grandchildren
4:17
'cause I think you've left an amazing legacy
4:19
for your children already,
4:20
but what would you want your grandchildren
4:22
to know about this book
4:24
and why you've kind of written it?
4:26
- Well, this is kind of to them.
4:32
I want them to know the stories.
4:34
I don't want them to hear stories
4:37
from people out there that have never even met me.
4:42
I want them to know the absolute honest to goodness truth
4:47
about stories that I tell,
4:50
and I so want them to be proud of me
4:54
and proud of their heritage and where they came from.
5:01
- [Theresa] So this book has a hundred recipes in it.
5:04
Over a hundred, actually,
5:05
'cause you had a hard time cutting 'em down.
5:07
- Yes, yes, yes.
5:08
And I'm still trying to slip one or two in it. (laughs)
5:11
- [Theresa] And a large portion of 'em are brand new.
5:14
- Oh, yes, yes. - So where'd you get 'em?
5:16
- Well, I had such a treat that was given to me
5:23
by my Aunt Peggy.
5:25
She had these two big boxes
5:29
and they were old, old,
5:31
but they were made to look like books,
5:33
but they actually opened and held,
5:36
it's a great place to keep your papers
5:38
or your prize recipes.
5:41
Well, one day, I was home with Aunt Peggy,
5:44
and she said, "I want you to have this,"
5:47
or you know what?
5:48
She might have brought it to Savannah to give to me.
5:53
Nevertheless, this was from Aunt Peggy,
5:56
and it was slab-ka-dab full of recipes from my mother,
6:00
my grandmother, from my Aunt Trina,
6:04
from Aunt Winnie and Uncle Jean and Cousin Jean
6:09
and just, you know, everything, everything.
6:13
And I said, oh, my goodness,
6:15
just when I thought I had seen them all.
6:20
- [Theresa] So you're gonna tell stories in this book?
6:23
- Yes.
6:24
- [Theresa] Kind of starting with your chapters on your,
6:27
when you were a child?
6:28
- Yeah, we gonna start with my childhood.
6:29
- [Theresa] Tease us with a little story,
6:31
maybe a little one that might be in the book.
6:34
And not a whole lot
6:35
'cause we only wanna tease 'em.
6:37
- I don't know.
6:37
You know, at my age, I got a lot of stories, Theresa.
6:40
(both laughing)
6:43
And I like to say they're all true. (laughs)
6:46
If it comes outta my mouth.
6:48
If it hadn't come outta my mouth,
6:50
I can't verify that, but...
6:53
Oh, my gosh, what?
6:57
It's really hard to pick out just one,
7:01
just one story, but-
7:05
- So are you writing it and- - I know I do,
7:07
we're still working on this book, y'all,
7:11
and we probably will be for,
7:13
how much longer?
7:14
Six, six to eight weeks.
7:17
And then it won't,
7:19
it will have to be put together so it can go to press.
7:25
But I think I do want to tell the day
7:29
about Gordon Elliot putting me in a hot air balloon.
7:35
And I was already petrified,
7:36
I told Gordon, I said, "Gordon, I don't do,
7:38
"I don't do hot air balloons.
7:40
"I don't fly in," well.
7:44
- [Theresa] This was for one of the shows, right?
7:45
- Yes, I was doing Paula's Home Cooking, I think,
7:50
and I was in Millbrook at Gordon's house,
7:55
and so I'll tell y'all about it in the book.
8:00
I lost a Life.
8:02
(both laughing)
8:04
- [Theresa] Well, I think we've given them a good tease
8:06
on what the book is about.
8:07
You normally, in most of your books, have gone out
8:10
and your book is on Amazon,
8:12
and your book is, you do book signings,
8:14
and you've got it in all kinds of retail stores.
8:17
We're not doing it that way
8:18
this go-around. - No, we're not doing it.
8:19
- [Theresa] We've decided to be,
8:21
to do this all ourselves.
8:22
It's kind of full circle
8:23
from when you self-published your first one.
8:24
- Right, when I first started, I self-published it.
8:27
And I took a chance, I was brand new.
8:31
I didn't know what I was doing.
8:34
So I know the more you order, the cheaper it gets.
8:39
Like so many things, you know?
8:43
So I ordered a butt load. (laughs)
8:47
- [Theresa] How many was that?
8:48
- That was 5,000.
8:49
- [Theresa] Wow, of your first book?
8:51
- Yes, and everybody thought I was crazy,
8:53
but I said, listen, I can,
8:55
it's so much cheaper, you know,
8:57
if I buy that many versus a hundred.
8:59
And the deal was I had to sell every book that I owned
9:08
by March the 31st,
9:10
and then it had to be pulled and destroyed or whatever
9:14
because it could not compete
9:15
with the one that the big house had bought.
9:19
I sold book 5,000 on March the 31st
9:25
to a person that worked at Savannah News Press.
9:28
- [Theresa] Wow.
9:30
Well, so I think we just wanna remind them again
9:33
that they can only purchase this.
9:35
- Yes, yes.
9:36
So excuse me, I really didn't finish that thought,
9:40
but so, it is, you know,
9:42
when you're self-publishing a book,
9:45
you don't want to over overprint
9:49
because there goes your profit.
9:54
So we had,
9:55
and since this book is self-published,
9:57
we are gonna make sure that we have enough
10:02
and we know exactly how many to print.
10:05
So it's very important, y'all, that you pre-order.
10:09
This must be pre-ordered.
10:11
You will not find it in Paula Deen stores.
10:14
You will not find it on Amazon.
10:16
The only way you'll find this book
10:19
is to pre-order at pauladeenbook.com,
10:24
or the phone number that Theresa gave you.
10:28
And we plan to have it out
10:31
in the fall in time for gift-giving season.
10:36
So I'm so excited.
10:37
It's gonna make a fabulous Christmas gift, y'all.
10:42
So any other questions, Theresa?
10:45
- [Theresa] No, ma'am,
10:46
just what's the name of the book again?
10:49
- Paula Deen's Love and Best Dishes.
10:51
How many times have y'all heard me say those words to y'all?
10:55
(Paula laughs)
10:56
This book really is a love letter to y'all,
11:00
my followers and my family.
11:03
And I hope that you enjoy
11:05
what may very well be my last book,
11:08
Paula Deen's Love and Best Dishes.
11:11
And that's what I'm sending to y'all today.
11:13
More love and more best dishes.
