- Eddie and Theresa...
0:03
Eddie and Theresa suggested
0:06
that I give y'all a little tour of our backyard,
0:11
because the hydrangeas are in bloom, y'all.
0:15
And I would love for y'all to see
0:17
what I get to look at every day.
0:20
If y'all are not a hydran grow...
0:22
Hydro... (Paula laughing),
0:24
Hydranium grower, rethink that,
0:28
because they're such a beautiful, beautiful flower.
0:32
And they don't take a whole lot of maintenance.
0:36
You know, the only thing is,
0:38
depending on the breed of the hydrangea,
0:41
you would need to find out from your nursery,
0:44
wherever you bought 'em from,
0:47
some you need to trim back,
0:49
you need to cut the stalk, some you don't.
0:53
And I kind of learned that the hard way
0:55
because my niece Corrie said, trim those.
0:59
And Eddie caught me one day out here,
1:01
just snapping off those hard ones,
1:02
He said, "Don't do that!
1:04
Don't do that!"
1:05
So I'm glad he stopped me.
1:10
- [Eddie] The ones with the larger leaf are the macrophylla.
1:15
- Okay. - [Eddie] And they-
1:16
- Did y'all hear what Eddie said?
1:18
- [Eddie] They...
1:20
- Say it one more time, please, Eddie.
1:21
- [Eddie] They well, the...
1:22
- What's the name of this one?
1:24
- [Eddie] It's the macrophylla hydrangeas have the larger-
1:28
- Leaves. - [Eddie] Leaves.
1:30
And the blooms will beyond the stick the year before,
1:37
like after the season is done.
1:39
- Really?
1:40
- [Eddie] So if you cut 'em, you're cutting your-
1:42
- You're cutting your flowers off.
1:44
- [Eddie] But the, like the limelights,
1:46
you cut back all the way because those bloom off of here.
1:49
- [Paula] Now, where did that little yellowy green
1:52
hydrangea come from?
1:53
- [Eddie] Well, that's just getting ready to bloom,
1:55
it'll end up like that.
1:56
- [Paula] Oh, it will, okay.
1:58
And I've always heard Eddie...
1:59
Uh-oh, somebody needs a drink of water right here.
2:07
These get real, real thirsty, impatience.
2:10
And they're another blooming flower, that to me is easy.
2:15
- [Eddie] That came back from last year,
2:17
just popped up right there
2:18
all by itself. - [Paula] Wow.
2:19
Right where we had put it.
2:20
- [Eddie] Yeah.
2:22
- [Paula] It didn't go anywhere but look at these.
2:26
I think the lavender and the more purples
2:31
are maybe my favorite color.
2:35
Or is it this beautiful pink one
2:38
or this beautiful pink one?
2:40
- [Eddie] These are the Endless Summer ones,
2:42
these will go like all the way up until Christmas.
2:45
- Well, and look, this looks like
2:47
that little greenish white one over there.
2:51
See those little...
2:52
You see what I'm saying, Eddie?
2:55
- [Eddie] Yeah, those are just beginning to open up.
2:56
- But see, I would come out here and I would, in the winter,
3:00
I would break off those stalks thinking I was helping them.
3:06
I didn't know I was really hurting 'em.
3:09
But I just love out here, I think it's so beautiful
3:16
and Eddie and Mike have done
3:17
a wonderful job planting things.
3:21
And you know, I'll buy ferns, Eddie'll buy ferns
3:27
and eventually they're gonna outgrow their pot
3:31
or they gonna look like they need emergency surgery.
3:36
So I've asked them to just plant them.
3:40
Take the old ferns that are no longer good for hanging
3:45
to just plant 'em out here and look.
3:48
And they come back every year.
3:50
- [Eddie] These are, these are the Queensland ferns,
3:54
like a Boston fern- - [Paula] And you know what?
3:56
- [Eddie] Wouldn't make it but these spread.
3:59
- Do you know what my favorite fern is?
4:02
It's those wild ferns with the bigger leaves.
4:05
- [Eddie] The fiddle leaf ferns.
4:07
- No, not the fiddle leaf.
4:11
I don't know, but I'll show you one day when I see one.
4:14
I mean, if you walked out in the woods,
4:16
you would see, you know, some growing wild.
4:20
- [Eddie] See, these are the limelights,
4:22
those are the ones you cut back every year.
4:26
- [Paula] Okay.
4:27
- [Eddie] And they bloom off of new growth.
4:31
- Is that the only limelight back here?
4:33
- [Eddie] There's some over over here as well.
4:36
- [Paula] Down here. - [Eddie] Yeah.
4:37
- [Paula] Now that's not the oak leaf hydrangea.
4:39
- [Eddie] No, no they're called limelights
4:41
and then these are the Nantucket.
4:44
- [Paula] Oh, I love those, where they just have a big bloom
4:47
and then little blooms, I think that's so pretty.
4:50
- [Eddie] I think they call this a lace...
4:50
A lace cap, I think they call that.
4:53
- [Paula] Lace cap? - [Eddie] Yeah.
4:55
- [Paula] I don't see how
4:55
you remember all those names, Eddie.
4:58
- [Eddie] See here's a limelight.
5:02
- [Paula] Yes, so that blooms later?
5:05
- [Eddie] It blooms later. - [Paula] Than the-
5:07
- [Eddie] And that's the one you cut back all the way.
5:09
- [Paula] Okay, okay.
5:11
I noticed over here, Eddie, that we've got some ferns
5:14
that need to be put in the ground.
5:17
They're still in pots, so...
5:20
- [Eddie] Well, these over here, we-
5:21
- [Paula] That will stunt their growth.
5:22
- [Eddie] We kept up because the water comes up.
5:25
- [Paula] Yeah.
5:26
- [Eddie] And so we kept them in pots
5:28
to keep 'em out of the soil.
5:30
- Very, very seldom,
5:32
I've only seen it run up to the edge twice in 20 years.
5:39
So I think it would be a slim chance
5:46
for the salt water to kill 'em.
5:50
But they sure won't grow anymore
5:52
and they can't spread if they're in a pot.
5:54
So, "That's story and I'm sticking to it."
6:01
Oh, you wanna, let's walk 'em around
6:02
to the fish pond, Eddie?
6:07
And this is called Turner's Creek, it's salt water
6:14
but I have seen a alligator out there before.
6:17
So if somebody tells you
6:19
alligators can't live in salt water,
6:22
you know, that they darn show can.
6:25
(Paula laughs)
6:29
The kids love to go kayak and all their stuff is back there.
6:33
And one lady, we shot a video outside
6:39
and you know, I was talking about
6:40
how I love the flowers so much
6:43
and she sent me bulbs and look at 'em.
6:51
- [Eddie] These are the pine cone ginger lilies.
6:54
- Pine cones, y'all, they look just like a pine cone.
6:58
Kind of a pinky pine cone.
7:01
If you looked at it, you would swear and Miss...
7:07
Help me.
7:08
- [Eddie] Miss. Childress,
7:09
- Miss. Childress is the lady that sent 'em to me
7:12
and I just thought it was so sweet.
7:15
So after they popped up, we sent her a picture of 'em,
7:18
didn't we, Eddie?
7:19
- [Eddie] Yes, yes.
7:21
- All right, come on around here, this is...
7:24
This might be one of my favorite places here in the yard.
7:29
That's the wall that my dogs ran around
7:33
in August of 2000 or 2001.
7:39
But all this pretty wasn't here, it was weeds, Eddie.
7:42
(both laughing)
7:43
It was weeds.
7:46
Alright, let's see, how the fishies doin' today.
7:51
(fountain calming splashing)
7:55
See if we can call 'em up.
7:57
- [Eddie] They're looking for you.
7:59
- [Paula] They are, they see our shadow.
8:02
Where do you want me to gather 'em?
8:04
- [Eddie] Right here.
8:05
- [Paula] Where the sun is or...
8:07
- [Eddie] Yeah, right here's good.
8:09
- Look how big that white koi is getting.
8:14
The other day when I fed him,
8:15
he came up on the wall to get it.
8:20
(fountain gently splashing)
8:29
Yeah, they can see us when we walk up.
8:37
I have a tendency to wanna overfeed 'em
8:41
like I do everything, y'all, I want to feed,
8:44
overfeed me and everybody, and everything I love.
8:50
(Paula laughs)
8:52
So when you come around me, you have to kind of be careful.
8:58
What a...
8:59
I love these things, Eddie.
9:00
And they come back every year.
9:02
- [Eddie] Yeah, that it comes...
9:03
Those are canna lilies.
9:05
- They're so beautiful.
9:08
They're so beautiful.
9:12
But I love this tree, I think this is a water oak.
9:16
What do you think Theresa, is this a oak tree or water oak?
9:21
- [Theresa] I think this...
9:24
- [Eddie] I think this one's a live...
9:25
I think this one's a live oak.
9:27
- I think so too and y'all will notice,
9:29
there's no hanging moss, there's no moss on this tree.
9:38
- [Theresa] I could give you some from my house.
9:40
- Oh, that's all right.
9:41
Theresa, look how big that white koi is gettin',
9:46
if he'll come back up.
9:52
We've just been so lucky that the birds
9:54
and the big birds-
9:58
- [Theresa] They can't get in here.
9:59
- And the raccoons. - [Theresa] Which is nice.
10:01
- Well, they don't realize it's here, which is great.
10:05
So that's it, that's a tour on our backyard.
10:09
It's not a whole bunch of property,
10:12
but to me it's home and I love it.
10:18
Makes me feel good when I pull up from a trip
10:23
and go into my little house, it feels real good.
10:28
So I hope you enjoyed your tour.
10:30
We will do the pool area and what I call the front yard,
10:35
which Michael quickly tells me, "That's the backyard, Paula.
10:39
The water side is the front of the house."
10:41
I said, "Well, why did we put the front door
10:43
on that side then?"
10:46
He couldn't answer that one.
10:48
(Paula laughs)
10:53
Hey, y'all, it's Paula Deen.
