- [Interviewer] So Paula, during one of our staff meetings,
0:02
you showed us an old magazine. - Uh-huh.
0:06
- [Interviewer] It wasn't an old magazine.
0:07
It was actually one of our newer magazines that had kind
0:10
of shown all your looks.
0:11
- Uh-huh, (laughs) and I've had so many.
0:15
- [Interviewer] So our team,
0:17
Stephanie (laughs) being our team kind of went back,
0:20
and we got some looks for you to look at.
0:22
And these are sort of from your child, like not childhood,
0:26
but early motherhood up until today.
0:28
- I was a child when I had my first child.
0:30
- [Interviewer] And there's only five,
0:31
and we could do lots and lots more of these.
0:33
- Oh, we'll have to. I don't know what you've got.
0:35
I hadn't seen what you have. - So here's number one,
0:38
and make sure you show everybody
0:39
or I'm gonna show everybody first.
0:42
- Oh, my precious baby.
0:45
- [Interviewer] She can see through it.
0:47
- My precious little chubby Jamie.
0:50
- [Interviewer] Let's talk about the hair
0:51
and not the precious chubby Jamie.
0:53
(Paula laughs)
0:55
- Let me tell you,
0:56
do you know how long my hair actually was?
1:01
It was just a little longer than Eddie's,
1:06
uh-huh, as far as down here.
1:09
And up here, you had what we call wiglets,
1:14
and it was about this big,
1:15
and you put it in the crown of your head,
1:18
and I would tease my hair and that wiglet,
1:22
and honey, just barely slick it down so it was real tall.
1:29
I'm 5'4" or 5'4" and a half,
1:32
and I looked 5'9" with that hairdo. (laughs)
1:36
- [Interviewer] That's a pretty picture though and
1:37
that was very cute hairstyle. - But that was a hairstyle.
1:42
I need to get me another wiglet.
1:45
- [Interviewer] Well, this kind of is
1:45
in the wiglet area too. (Paula laughs)
1:47
The hair's not, this one isn't as-
1:49
- Oh, my precious baby.
1:51
- [Interviewer] Okay, this one isn't as tall.
1:53
It's just a little wide.
1:55
- Yes.
1:56
All right, this was
2:01
when we moved to Savannah,
2:03
I had a little dog that looks much like Lulu.
2:13
She was kind of like a shih tzu.
2:16
I can't remember her exact,
2:19
but she was so sweet
2:22
and her name was Magnolia.
2:24
And you know, Magnolia has been dead,
2:28
probably 30 years.
2:30
- [Interviewer] Wow.
2:31
- And I still, on occasion, will call her Magnolia.
2:38
- Let's talk about that hair and the boys.
2:41
- Ooh, honey, that's when I decided
2:43
I was gonna go a little red 'cause I've got pictures
2:48
that you can look at and tell
2:51
that I would go to the grocery store
2:53
and I would pick out the box
2:54
that I thought had the prettiest girl on it.
2:56
It didn't too much matter what color the hair was,
3:00
but it was a pretty girl, so I would be that color. (laughs)
3:06
But this,
3:09
we adored this dog.
3:12
His name was Blue.
3:14
He had one ice blue eye and one dark eye,
3:18
and he was a bulldog.
3:22
And this is Jamie and this is Bobby.
3:26
He's almost unrecognizable
3:28
because that's when he was living under mama's roof
3:32
and still enjoying home cooking.
3:34
(interviewer and Paula laughing)
3:38
But we took that in the park,
3:41
and I don't know what made me ask for them
3:44
to take a picture.
3:48
I don't know why we needed that but...
3:51
- [Interviewer] It's a good photo.
3:53
- Yeah, it is. It's a good photo.
3:55
And I tease that hair,
3:57
but it was more to the side then than on top.
4:01
It was still pretty high. (laughs)
4:03
- [Interviewer] So this photo was sitting on my countertop.
4:07
- I'm not looking. - My husband was like,
4:10
"Who is that?"
4:12
(Paula laughs) And this is not long
4:16
before I came to work for you.
4:17
- [Paula] Oh, I see some pictures that fell on the floor.
4:20
- [Interviewer] Those are kinder photos.
4:23
- Oh, my goodness.
4:28
This picture- - Is that you?
4:30
- Yes, it's me. - And what year would that be?
4:32
- The year that Random House bought
4:37
my first cookbook,
4:40
or it would've been 1997.
4:43
- [Interviewer] So from '89 with the red hair
4:46
to that look in '97. - Mm-hm. Mm-hm.
4:49
- [Interviewer] You don't even look anything
4:50
like that person.
4:51
- Well, let me tell you something.
4:54
Jamie would come up behind me when I was coloring my hair,
4:57
and he'd put his lips on the back of my hair
4:59
and he'd say, "Hey, skunk."
5:03
(laughs) And I just got tired of being called a skunk.
5:07
So I went to the beauty shop and said,
5:10
"Can you strip this color off?"
5:13
Well, it went back orange again when they did that,
5:16
and I put on a baseball cap and I worked for one year.
5:20
And this was the first photo.
5:23
We were doing a photo shoot
5:25
for "The Lady & Sons, Too!"
5:29
- [Interviewer] Push that picture out
5:31
so Eddie can zoom in too. - M'kay.
5:34
We were doing a shoot for my second cookbook,
5:39
"The Lady & Sons, Too!"
5:42
And this was like on a Monday,
5:45
and the previous Saturday,
5:47
I had been home for WC
5:50
to cut all the color off my hair.
5:54
And Jamie had not changed a bit.
5:56
Bobby was still enjoying the buffet. (laughs)
6:01
- [Interviewer] I feel like this photo was one
6:03
when we first needed like birthday photos or PR photos.
6:08
- [Paula] Mm-hm. Mm-hm.
6:11
- [Interviewer] And your hair's starting to grow back in,
6:13
and you look 10 years younger. - Yes.
6:16
Well, this was on the third floor
6:19
of our restaurant down the street.
6:23
This was not at 311.
6:25
You can see all my Bob Christian's art hanging in there.
6:28
And they needed some photos just
6:33
for us to have, and they took that.
6:36
No, this was years after this one.
6:41
- [Interviewer] Yes. So that's like at least '10
6:45
'cause I started within 2003 and I wanna say those,
6:49
I remember that photo. - Me looking like that.
6:51
Oh, okay. - Mm-hm.
6:52
And that would've been maybe 2007,
6:54
six or seven. - So I just had kept
6:56
my hair short, not that short.
7:01
It was long enough I could get some curlers in it. (laughs)
7:06
- [Interviewer] I want you to look at that photo
7:07
that you're looking at. - Okay.
7:09
- [Interviewer] And I'm gonna show them this photo
7:10
because this was probably one of our last photo shoots,
7:14
Eddie, within the last year or two, wouldn't you say?
7:19
- [Eddie] I don't know this.
7:20
That one looks like it might've been like when I started,
7:23
about when I started.
7:24
So right about 10 years ago. Yeah.
7:27
- [Interviewer] And look at that girl compared to that girl.
7:30
- Wow.
7:33
- You aged backwards, Paula. - Thank you, honey.
7:35
But this is Paula makeup
7:38
and this is professional makeup. (laughs)
7:43
Quite a bit of difference.
7:46
Jamie Cribbs was doing my hair at that time,
7:51
and he could just make it look gorgeous.
7:56
And Courtney Fix was doing my makeup.
8:01
And I'm trying to figure out where we were.
8:03
- [Interviewer] I don't think you look that different now
8:05
from there when you're all-
8:07
- Well, thank you. Thank you.
8:09
You know what?
8:11
God's been so kind to me in so many ways.
8:15
He's been so merciful to me.
8:17
But I think having my head
8:20
over in that collared pot,
8:24
I got a steaming every day on my face for years.
8:29
And I think that helped (laughs)
8:32
'cause I had to stick my head
8:35
in that big old pot to be able to see it.
8:40
- [Interviewer] Well, those probably are not as funny
8:42
of photos as we could do. - Oh.
8:43
I got a good one. - And you told me
8:44
you would be fine doing some really funny things.
8:46
- Yes. - So our next version
8:49
of this show will be more funny,
8:53
like your colored hair. - Yes.
8:55
(Paula laughs)
8:57
- You know, I couldn't believe-
8:58
- That's a big difference - I know.
9:02
- just from when the restaurant,
9:03
a small restaurant. - All right, let's go.
9:05
Let's go from this to this.
9:11
- [Interviewer] You really need to show that middle picture
9:13
from the restaurant when you were in the small restaurant
9:15
to the big restaurant. - Uh-huh.
9:22
- You know, it just really is funny.
9:24
I was amazed at
9:32
the different looks I've had.
9:35
For some reason, we were, Jamie had pictures,
9:38
and we were looking back the other day,
9:40
and there's some- - I will have him-
9:44
- But I could tell in the pictures
9:47
that when I was working those 16 and 18-hour days
9:51
without a day off for years
9:55
because in the Best Western,
9:56
I had to open seven days a week, three meals a day.
10:00
(interviewer faintly speaking)
10:02
- Well, the boys worked till through lunch,
10:08
and then whoever I could get to come in
10:11
and help me at night.
10:19
- [Interviewer] Well, we're gonna get some
10:19
of those photos. - I worked hard but-
10:20
- [Interviewer] We have to have Jamie join us
10:22
for that particular video - Yes, yes. Yeah.
10:24
- [Interviewer] because I'm sure he can tell some stories.
10:26
- Oh, I'm sure he can. I'm sure he can.
10:30
But like I said, I can tell just as good.
10:33
Now this is a current picture.
10:36
This was a 4th of July magazine.
10:46
So my hair was- - Not much of a difference,
10:51
except for a little bit of the hair.
10:52
- (laughs) Yeah, I had a little shorter hairdo
10:56
in this one than this one.
11:01
But keep your head- - God has been good to you.
11:05
It looks category, FYI. - Yes.
11:08
(laughs) Well, thank you.
11:12
I went from not bad to real bad.
11:20
