- Y'all, I have got
0:02
a special guest
0:05
for y'all to meet today.
0:06
And those that have been coming
0:09
to the Lady & Sons for 25 years,
0:14
you will recognize her
0:17
because she was like a fixture at the Lady & Sons
0:21
for I don't know how many years.
0:22
How many years?
0:24
This is- - Almost 40 years.
0:25
- Oh, no it ain't been 40- - Yes, it is.
0:27
- No it hadn't, baby. - Okay.
0:28
- We didn't open until 1996. - Okay.
0:31
- Downtown. - Okay.
0:33
- So it's almost 2026...
0:38
I can't- - It's been
0:38
longer than that. - Math.
0:40
Math was- (laughs)
0:42
- It's been longer than that
0:43
because we was down on the other end almost.
0:46
- That's right.
0:46
We opened up there January the 8th, 1996.
0:52
- That's right.
0:53
- And we have been at the big building
0:56
like 21 or 22 years now so... - Yeah.
1:02
- And we were there five,
1:03
so it's been 27 years I think. - Okay.
1:06
- I don't know.
1:07
But then we had the bag lady before that.
1:10
This is Ineata Jones, but everybody knows her as Jelly Roll.
1:16
And people that come in that restaurant,
1:19
they wanna see Jelly Roll. (Ineata laughs)
1:23
And...
1:26
She has become famous, you know,
1:29
with the people that come into the restaurant.
1:31
And, you know,
1:33
I've got my blood family,
1:36
but then I have
1:38
my working family
1:41
and she and I, that really makes us sisters,
1:45
- Yeah. (chuckles) - Because, you know,
1:49
we've been through a lot together over the years.
1:51
We've worked so hard together. - Yes.
1:54
And...
1:55
- And I love it.
1:56
- I know it. (Ineata chuckles)
1:57
I do too, Neata.
1:59
I do too. - I do.
2:00
- I'm trying to figure out how old she is.
2:02
I ask her last night.
2:04
So anyway, Neata spent a night with me last night
2:08
'cause I've been telling her that we come get her
2:10
and let her spend the night with us.
2:13
So we did last night.
2:15
And you got to celebrate Eddie's birthday.
2:18
And so we took Aunt Peggy some pizza
2:23
over to
2:26
the assisted living house.
2:29
So she got to visit with Aunt Peggy.
2:31
And then she got to visit
2:33
with the wild buck grandchildren.
2:36
(both laugh)
2:38
- Yes, sir.
2:39
- And honey, there was only four grandchildren
2:42
here last night. - Oh God.
2:43
- Instead of 11.
2:45
So you ain't seen nothing, honey.
2:47
- Oh Jesus.
2:48
- Until all 11 show up. (laughs)
2:52
You'd wanna run and hide.
2:55
But so
2:56
after we took Aunt Peggy her pizza,
3:01
I asked Neata, I said, "How old are you?"
3:04
She said, "97."
3:05
I said, "Well, you are a liar!" (laughs)
3:08
You ain't no 97.
3:11
And then she said "67."
3:12
I said, "You ain't 67 either."
3:15
So I'm trying to get the truth out of her.
3:18
- I did.
3:18
- How old are you?
3:19
- 70.
3:22
- You're older than 70.
3:24
- Me and you about the same age.
3:26
- I'm 78. - That's right.
3:30
- And are you older than me?
3:31
- I'm 79.
3:34
- Finally the truth, y'all.
3:35
(Ineata laughing) It took her going on camera
3:39
to admit how old she was.
3:40
I knew she was older than me.
3:44
But you know what?
3:45
The funniest thing is I'm waiting on her.
3:48
I said, "What's wrong with this picture?"
3:50
(both laugh)
3:54
Between you and Aunt Peggy.
3:56
And Michael. - Yeah. (chuckles)
4:00
- So, tell everybody
4:03
what you did at the restaurant.
4:06
- When I first got there
4:09
I had a friend that worked there.
4:12
She the one got me to work with you.
4:16
So I started working there and I got where
4:20
I just didn't wanna stay home then
4:22
'cause I got used to them, you know, being there.
4:27
- And we had such a good time.
4:29
Although we worked very hard.
4:30
- Yes we did. - You know,
4:32
and that kind of work is so hard, Neata.
4:34
- It is. - So stressful.
4:35
- Still is.
4:36
- I remember one day we had 13 catering jobs.
4:41
That had to be delivered.
4:44
Plus a packed dining room. - That's right.
4:46
- And if you think that ain't stressful,
4:48
Trying to figure out how you're gonna get
4:52
all those jobs done. - Yes.
4:54
But we got it done though.
4:55
- We got it done.
4:57
We got it done. - Yes, Lord.
4:59
We got it done.
5:00
- We got it done.
5:01
(Ineata chuckles)
5:03
And when we moved down to the big building,
5:06
we had stations on each floor,
5:09
the first and the third floor.
5:12
And we put in a griddle and a oven
5:16
and started doing the biscuits and the hoe cakes
5:19
where folks could come up and see .
5:21
Watch what you were doin'.
5:23
And so she was a hoe lady.
5:27
And she still is today. - It still is today.
5:30
And I mean, they can answer a phone and be,
5:33
"You ain't got none of them hoe cakes?"
5:35
(Paula chuckles) I say, "Yes, I do.
5:37
And "I'll be out in a minute."
5:38
and I'd go out with a big plate full and they,
5:41
"Oh, I want two. (Paula laughs)
5:43
I want one."
5:45
And they go right on, boy.
5:48
Each and every day. - Those hoe cakes,
5:49
they put us on the map.
5:51
- Yes, they did.
5:52
Yes they did. - And
5:55
when I was off working,
5:59
I came home and they had decided
6:03
to take out
6:06
the baking section
6:10
because they said it was gotten dangerous
6:13
for it being slick.
6:15
So I don't know.
6:17
That was a sad day, that- - Yeah, I wish
6:20
that we were there, though.
6:22
- I wish they had said something about it.
6:24
But they did it without consulting me.
6:28
But we found a way to
6:31
get some hoe cakes to 'em. - Yeah, we found a way.
6:33
- And she is the best hoe in town!
6:36
- That's the truth.
6:37
- You tried to teach people
6:38
how to make them hoe cakes.
6:40
- But they can't.
6:41
They cannot do it.
6:45
"I don't know how to make 'em."
6:46
I said, "If you stand here
6:49
and look at me and see what I'm doing,
6:51
- You'll learn. - That's right.
6:53
- They say, "Okay, yeah."
6:55
I say, "Mm-hm, let's forget it."
6:57
(Paula laughs) "Just forget it.
6:58
I'll do it myself." - I know it.
7:00
- And I've been doing it every day.
7:03
- I had always said if I come back after life,
7:07
I wanna come back as a octopus.
7:09
- A what?
7:10
- A octopus!
7:11
So I'd have eight arms and I could do it all myself.
7:14
And that's what I'd like to see you come back in.
7:17
(both laugh)
7:18
You could have eight stations of cakes goin'.
7:21
- You ain't-
7:23
Boy, they be talkin' 'bout, "You makin' some?"
7:25
I say, "Yeah, it'll be out in a minute."
7:28
And I mean, I'd have a big plate full.
7:31
- I know it, I saw you. - Goodness.
7:33
- Was it yesterday I was down there?
7:35
No, day before yesterday. - Day before yesterday.
7:36
- Yeah.
7:38
And you had a plate that high.
7:40
- Yes sir, yes. (Paula laughs)
7:42
Then I said, "Well, I better get a pan."
7:44
I got one of them pans and filled it up real high.
7:48
And boy, don't they be some-
7:50
"I want two!
7:52
I want that dark one right there.
7:54
- "That dark one." (laughs)
7:55
- Yeah. (both laugh)
7:57
'Cause it be crispy and good, boy!
8:00
I go, "Okay."
8:03
- God has really blessed us.
8:05
- Yeah. - Over the years.
8:08
We've had so many good people put
8:12
their feet under our table. - A lot.
8:13
Yes.
8:14
I mean, it's a lot of people.
8:16
They be asking, "You going to work tomorrow?"
8:18
I say, "Yeah, I'm going."
8:20
"Okay, I'm coming." (both laugh)
8:22
"I'm gonna eat some of them hoe cakes."
8:24
(both laugh)
8:26
- They are so good.
8:26
Nobody can cook them hoe cakes like Neata.
8:30
- No, and I love it.
8:32
- I know you do.
8:33
You can look at you and tell
8:34
that you love it. - (chuckles) Jamie said,
8:36
"Oh, you ain't gonna be here tomorrow, aint it?"
8:38
I said, "No, I'm gonna be with your mama."
8:40
Come on, man.
8:42
- So you told Jamie you was coming to spend the night?
8:44
- Uh-huh. (Paula laughs)
8:45
You talking about?
8:46
I look at- - Let me
8:47
tell you another funny story.
8:49
When she had a knee replacement,
8:52
she came up to me, she said, "Paula,
8:55
I wanna recuperate at your house."
8:58
And I said, "Okay."
9:01
I was the bossiest heifer.
9:03
(Ineata laughs)
9:05
And Aunt Peggy and Susan-
9:08
I had to go out of town, I was working.
9:11
And so Aunt Peggy and Susan came to take care of you
9:14
until I could get my work done and come back home.
9:17
And when I got back home,
9:19
five minutes, I was ready to go back to work.
9:21
(both laugh)
9:23
'Cause she was bossing me all over the place.
9:25
- And then Paula said, "Okay, where your sister at?"
9:30
I said, "Home, I guess."
9:32
She said, "Why you can't get her
9:34
to come stay with you while we gone?"
9:36
I say, "All I gotta do is call her
9:39
and let y'all come get up a mile."
9:43
And she did.
9:44
Oh Lord, she loved it. (Paula laughing)
9:46
She came here and then she got bossy.
9:49
She gon' cook! (Paula laughs)
9:51
- Wonder where she learned that from.
9:53
(both laugh)
9:54
- And then I'm in the bed asleep
9:57
and she in the kitchen cooking breakfast.
10:00
I said, "Girl."
10:01
Talkin' 'bout, "Leave me alone.
10:02
Just leave me alone.
10:04
Ain't nobody ask you nothing."
10:05
And then all of us start eating breakfast.
10:09
(both laugh)
10:12
- Yeah, in fact,
10:13
we are gonna do a recipe that Neata
10:17
taught us how to make at the restaurant.
10:19
And it's so easy and so good.
10:22
So I so enjoyed you coming and spending the night with me.
10:25
- Me too (chuckles).
10:28
You are the kind of company
10:30
that is good to have.
10:32
You don't have to be entertained.
10:33
- Nope. (chuckles)
10:35
- Just sit her in front of the TV.
10:37
(both laugh)
10:39
- Yeah, 'cause I like to sit in front of the TV.
10:41
- I do too.
10:42
Guilty. (Ineata laughing)
10:43
Guilty, our TV never is ever turned off.
10:46
- Nope. - So...
10:49
You know what I always say, Neata?
10:51
To our friends out there?
10:55
"We send y'all love and best dishes."
10:58
Ain't that what we do? - Yes.
11:00
All the love and best dishes, you're right.
11:03
- Yes.
11:04
Yes. - Love all of them.
11:06
Everybody in the building.
11:07
- I know it.
11:09
It's our family.
11:10
It's our work family. - Especially my boy Jamie.
11:13
- I know it, that Jamie.
11:15
- He's a sweet boy.
11:16
- Yes to them. - He's a sweet boy, both of
11:18
them are, Jamie and Bobby. - Yes to them, yep.
11:21
- (blows kiss) So love and best dishes, y'all.
11:24
If you're here and coming to the Lady & Sons,
11:28
see if Neata's around
11:29
cooking some hoe cakes somewhere.
11:32
- 'Cause I will be there.
11:33
- I know Jamie's mad with me
11:34
because she couldn't come to work today
11:36
'cause she's here with me. (both laugh)
11:39
- That's all right, he's young.
11:41
He'll get over it. - He'll get over it.
11:46
Hey, y'all, it's Paula Deen.
