- Hey y'all, it's Paula,
0:01
and I'm here in Branson, Missouri
0:04
with one of my favorite young men in the world,
0:07
Logan Slaughter, and he has written a wonderful book.
0:13
He has been a great speaker for autism.
0:18
- Yes. - Because he is,
0:19
he suffers from autism.
0:22
And I have to tell you that my family
0:24
also has been touched by autism, Logan.
0:28
And in reading your book,
0:30
it describes to a T what to look for.
0:34
- Yeah. - If you think there is
0:37
something a little bit off. - Yes.
0:40
- But I love the fact that you can look me in the eye.
0:43
- Yes. - Because that's hard
0:44
for a lot of people with autism.
0:47
And so tell everybody about your book and how it started.
0:50
- Well, I wrote it about a year ago,
0:52
and I wanted to put in everything that these kids go through
0:55
and what I go through, but I had to speak for everybody.
0:59
- Because it's a whole spectrum, autism is.
1:01
- Yes. Yes. - So I'm so excited about it.
1:03
And I just wanted you to get one.
1:05
I'm so glad you had one.
1:06
- Listen, I was so proud to get this.
1:10
Look at that precious boy. - Aw.
1:12
- He is so pretty, y'all.
1:13
He's got the prettiest green eyes.
1:16
And he has got a heart bigger
1:18
than Paula Dean's Family Kitchen,
1:21
which is where we're standing right now.
1:22
- I don't know about that.
1:23
- Oh, yes, yes, you got a huge heart.
1:26
And it's wonderful that you come out
1:31
to speak about this subject,
1:33
because a lot of people don't know
1:35
how to approach it or handle it.
1:39
And it's nothing to be ashamed of.
1:41
- No. - Nothing to be ashamed of.
1:43
- And I hope this book hugs every child
1:45
with autism and their families.
1:47
- Absolutely. - And it was really dedicated
1:49
to all the courageous souls with autism and their families
1:53
and caregivers. - Yes, yes.
1:54
And what would you recommend
1:57
if someone's child has been diagnosed with autism?
2:02
Where is the first place they should go?
2:05
- Get a therapist and get the right path for them.
2:09
And go to a doctor and just kind of be with them
2:12
on that journey and not give up.
2:16
- Can autism become less intrusive with age,
2:22
or does it increase in intrusion?
2:26
- Well, it doesn't go away, but it can become manageable.
2:30
- Uh-huh. - But each level is different.
2:35
How many different levels of autism is there?
2:38
- Well, there's many because it's a whole spectrum,
2:41
but there's non-verbal and people that can talk.
2:46
- I heard there were three levels.
2:48
- Yes, three levels. Yes. - Okay.
2:51
- Which I've learned about that now,
2:52
because they didn't have that back then, the levels.
2:55
They just called it Asperger's or autism.
2:57
- Right, right, right. - Yeah.
3:00
So I learn something new every day too.
3:03
and I do too, you know? - Yeah, yeah.
3:06
- We think we know a lot,
3:07
but there's always one more thing out there
3:10
when I get up every day that I'm gonna learn
3:12
that I didn't know the day before.
3:14
- Yeah. You just got to lead with compassion and love.
3:17
- Yes, yes. - And remember,
3:18
I told you acceptance is the cure to autism.
3:21
- That's right, that's right, that's right.
3:24
- And for everything. - So if y'all have a child,
3:27
or you have friends or family
3:31
that has been touched by autism,
3:33
pick up this book because it's precious.
3:37
And it will help people to understand
3:39
what these children are going through in their little heads,
3:43
their precious little heads.
3:45
- And "Love Like Logan,"
3:47
and I love big. - Love like Logan,
3:49
and he loves big, y'all.
3:52
(Paula laughing) - Thank you.
3:53
- I love you, Precious. - I love you.
3:57
- I love you too, Mr. Logan.
