- Hey, y'all.
0:02
You might be able to guess the way I'm dressed today
0:05
that my mind is thinking about St. Patrick's Day.
0:10
And the recipe I'm gonna share today with y'all
0:12
is a chocolate stout cake,
0:16
and it has the Irish beer in it,
0:20
so odes to Irish beer.
0:24
But before I do that, I want to share with y'all
0:31
this most beautiful gift that someone sent me.
0:35
Did it come today or yesterday?
0:36
- [Eddie] It came in the mail.
0:37
Theresa brought it with her.
0:39
- Oh, good. - It came to our PO box.
0:40
- Oh, good, good.
0:43
Well, this is one of the most beautiful handmade gifts,
0:49
and I treasure so many, y'all.
0:52
Y'all send me these beautiful, handmade things
0:54
that you have put your time and your love in.
0:59
And this is from Sylvia Murphy
1:03
and Sylvia lives in Aliceville, Mississippi.
1:08
And she said, "Dear Miss Paula Deen,
1:11
this is a little gift for you
1:13
when you're cooking something good
1:14
with your husband and your boys
1:17
Hope you enjoy it.
1:18
Please let me know that you got it.
1:20
And you can email my son at Vern Murphy,
1:27
or please call me."
1:28
She gave me her phone number, so I am gonna call her.
1:30
And I can't tell, Sylvia, if this is cross stitch.
1:38
I used to do a lot of cross stitch,
1:41
but this is so beautiful
1:46
and I'm gonna treasure these aprons.
1:51
Did she sign 'em?
1:52
She didn't sign 'em, did she? - No, I don't see.
1:54
- [Paula] I wish she had had signed them
1:58
with her cross stitch, but-
2:01
- [Eddie] They have a vintage feel to them.
2:04
- They have such a vintage feel to them.
2:08
And, Sylvia, I can't tell you how much I appreciate
2:12
that you reminded me and everybody out there
2:16
that I'm sharing this with that, yes, Jesus does love us,
2:22
and He loves all of our little critters that He created.
2:26
And on this one, it's all the fruits that we love to eat.
2:32
Makes me wanna make some grape jelly,
2:36
or it makes me wanna make a pear cobbler.
2:40
I thank you so much, Sylvia,
2:43
and I will be getting in touch with you.
2:46
So, (claps) I don't know if I wanna wear that
2:51
making this recipe or not - You and chocolate.
2:53
- Because I don't wanna get chocolate on it.
2:56
Those are too beautiful.
2:58
I'm gonna those up, though, somewhere in here
3:00
where I can look at 'em every day.
3:02
So, let's move on with our chocolate stout cake.
3:07
And our first step is to melt our chocolate.
3:11
We're using a semi-sweet,
3:13
or is it a bittersweet, Theresa?
3:15
I can't remember. - Semi.
3:17
- A semi-sweet and a stick of butter.
3:22
So we're gonna melt all this,
3:26
and it's gotta cool completely.
3:30
And we're gonna be cooking this
3:31
in a nine inch spring form pan
3:35
like we would if we were doing a cheesecake.
3:38
So this is completely melting.
3:41
And so I'm gonna let it cool.
3:47
I guess I need to add the beer, don't I?
3:50
Gotta get the stout in there.
3:55
Gotta get the stout.
3:56
That'll help cool it down a little bit,
3:58
a little bit faster.
4:00
Now I took a piece of parchment paper, y'all.
4:04
You can see right there.
4:09
I cut out a ring.
4:10
Woo. - Want me to stick it
4:12
outside for a second? - Hot as fire, yes.
4:14
- [Theresa] 'Cause it's not hot as fire outside.
4:16
- I know.
4:17
Ooh, it's hot hot. - While you do that,
4:19
I'll do this. - Whoa.
4:22
All right, so to get our cake going,
4:25
(egg taps)
4:27
we're gonna add our eggs.
4:30
And that's two, four, six eggs.
4:35
(egg taps)
4:36
(door slams)
4:38
Whoa, I think Theresa just went outside.
4:42
You think, Eddie? (laughs) - Yeah.
4:45
- [Paula] Or you think she's mad at us
4:47
- [Eddie] That door closes pretty quickly.
4:50
- In the wind. (laughs) (Theresa chatters)
4:53
Uh huh, yeah, she just said,
4:55
"I'll tell you what, it's blowing lots of wind"
4:57
All right, so we got our eggs and our sugar,
5:01
and we're gonna beat this until it's like a pale yellow,
5:06
and we're gonna do that for five minutes.
5:10
(mixer whirs)
5:12
All right, I'm gonna just temper this chocolate,
5:20
but this is completely cool,
5:22
so I don't have to worry
5:23
about that chocolate making scrambled eggs.
5:32
I'm just gonna fold that in,
5:35
and now I'm gonna take the rest of it and fold it.
5:42
You know, Bobby, this has no flour in it, you know?
5:46
- Wow. - Butter, sugar,
5:56
Yeah, butter, eggs, chocolate- - Butter, sugar, and beer,
5:59
but no flour. - Yeah, no flour.
6:01
(both laugh)
6:02
No flour for us. - Completely healthy.
6:05
(Paula laughs) What the health nut.
6:07
- Yes, if you are- - Into that sort of thing.
6:11
- Yeah.
6:12
All right, now I'm just gonna try to fold this in.
6:18
And then we're gonna pour it into our spring form pan.
6:21
So if y'all ever go on Facebook,
6:25
I was so proud of Bobby.
6:26
He called the other day and said,
6:28
"Mama, I had the nicest surprise today."
6:34
Had no idea that it was coming.
6:37
But, you know, Bobby loves his jiu-jitsu,
6:42
and he was promoted the other day to a brown belt.
6:47
- Brown old belt. - And the next belt
6:50
is the black belt.
6:51
I mean, he is almost there, y'all.
6:54
And Bobby said, "Mama, I'm so proud
6:58
that I actually have carried this thing
7:00
all the way through, that I completed something."
7:03
- [Bobby] I haven't.
7:04
I have not.
7:05
Don't say that yet. - Yeah, but you're going to.
7:07
So anyway, I had a surprise for him
7:11
by putting a picture on Facebook of him
7:15
in his outfit with his brown belt.
7:20
Okay.
7:23
This tastes good.
7:24
Not even any vanilla flavoring or anything.
7:26
So, I sprayed my pan,
7:29
and then I put my piece of parchment paper down.
7:34
And this is gonna have to cook for a while, y'all.
7:39
- 55 minutes. - There you are, Bobby.
7:41
I was talking to you,
7:42
but now I can't remember what I was asking you.
7:44
Oh, I know what I was asking you.
7:48
Do you think any of your children
7:52
will take up your sport?
7:55
- [Bobby] Well, they're doing it right now,
7:56
whether they like it or not.
7:58
- [Paula] Well, I know Amelia loved-
7:59
- 'Cause I wrestle 'em every day. (laughs)
8:01
- I know.
8:02
I know that I watch you and Linton,
8:06
but I think Olivia would be a great contender
8:09
- I think she'd be good. - At that sport.
8:11
- I don't know, Mom. - I think she
8:12
would be real good.
8:13
- [Bobby] You know, I started really, really late in life.
8:16
I went to that, and it was because I was looking
8:19
for something and needed something,
8:21
and I found it there with those people and that place.
8:25
And, you know, everybody's so different.
8:29
Who knows what my children will be into.
8:30
I know that Linton, he was born an artist.
8:33
He is an artist.
8:34
That kid, just you can see it plain as day.
8:37
- [Paula] He would see it with a pencil in his hand.
8:40
- [Bobby] And the two girls, you know, we'll see.
8:45
As long as they're good people, I'm happy.
8:48
- [Paula] Mm, that's right.
8:50
- [Bobby] And speaking of being good people,
8:51
- [Paula] In case you want to taste it.
8:51
- [Bobby] They went to...
8:52
No, it's got a beer in it and stuff.
8:54
I don't drink anymore.
8:55
I don't... - Oh, okay.
8:56
I didn't think about that.
8:57
- Yeah. - It's not, but a fourth
8:59
of a cup though. - Doesn't matter.
9:00
- [Bobby] How about zero would be best for me?
9:03
- That's good. - Speaking of them
9:04
being good people, they went to the beach today
9:06
with their school on a little outing,
9:08
- Oh, they did? - And they're picking up trash
9:09
on the beach all day long.
9:10
I said, "That's perfect."
9:12
- Yes. - Get out there
9:13
and pick it up.
9:14
Pick it up.
9:15
(both laugh)
9:17
- That's great. - I don't wanna pick up trash.
9:20
Go pick it up. - That's a great lesson
9:22
both of them to learn.
9:23
- [Eddie] They go to the beach a lot, don't they,
9:24
with their school? - They do sometimes go there.
9:26
- Field trips. - Yeah.
9:27
They're out there saving the sea turtles
9:29
is what they're doing.
9:30
The turtles are nesting and laying eggs.
9:32
- 55 minutes.
9:33
- 55. - At 350.
9:35
- Yes, 55 minutes at 350.
9:38
All right, here's our stout cake, y'all.
9:41
Hard to believe there's not a speck of flour in it.
9:46
So, I mean, it's not something
9:49
that you would call a gorgeous cake.
9:52
I don't know, if you like chocolate, it's pretty gorgeous.
9:55
But Father John has come by for a visit,
9:58
and he's fixing to go home,
10:00
and I can't let him leave
10:03
without a piece of stout cake.
10:06
And I know I should let this cool some,
10:14
but time waits on no man.
10:18
Right, Father John?
10:21
(Father John chatters)
10:23
(Paula laughs)
10:35
This stout cake is little bit fragile
10:40
in being nice and hot.
10:46
- [Father John] Define a stout cake for me, Paula.
10:49
- Well, it's what's in it.
10:53
This is kind of an ode to St. Patrick's Day,
10:57
and we put stout beer.
11:00
- Okay. - That's Guinness.
11:02
- Yeah, Guinness, Guinness.
11:07
All right, I'm trying to...
11:11
And I put parchment paper in there.
11:16
So, (laughs) if you feel like you're chewing on paper,
11:23
spit the paper out.
11:24
- Excellent. - Okay? (laughs)
11:28
'Cause I can't tell
11:33
what I'm picking up.
11:36
I'm gonna put those little crumbs in there too for you.
11:42
If you like chocolate, this is like...
11:45
It's real dense and real chocolatey
11:51
for you chocolate lovers.
11:56
Okay, I didn't get any paper with that one, I don't think.
12:02
How much do you like Chocolate, Father John?
12:10
From one to zero.
12:11
- Unlimited. - Uh oh.
12:15
- We'll give her 10 plus. - Okay, well, you gonna
12:17
get three pieces then. - Great.
12:20
- Let it cool.
12:23
But this is to Father John from the Paula Deen Kitchen,
12:29
sending a whole lot of love to him.
12:34
So there you go.
12:36
- Thank you. - You're so welcome.
12:38
Looks pretty good. - I'll think of you often
12:40
as I'm chowing down. (Paula laughs)
12:46
Hey, y'all, it's Paula Deen.
