My team that I play on just brought up the fact

that I'm fixed to celebrate a birthday, another year,

and I will be 78 years old,

I think the end of this week,

I'm not sure what day my birthday is,

because I'm not gonna think about it, y'all.

I can't believe that I have outlived my father by 38 years,

and I've outlived my mother by 34 years.

So this is a shock to me that I'm still here, y'all.

Thank goodness, you know, some of us takes us longer

for God to want us in his calvary, I think,

to bring us home, I don't know.

But I'm so thankful for every minute

that I have spent on this earth, it's such a privilege.

It just gets hard to celebrate 'em though,

when they get up in, like, double digits

and then different decades.

But I'm actually traveling on my birthday.

I am thrilled at what I'm gonna be doing

the end of this week and the beginning of next week.

And my year has, you know,

it seems like I've been really, really busy

and I've got something

I'd love to share with y'all right now, but I can't,

but I'll be able to share that with y'all very soon.

And to me, it's all good,

so can't wait to share that project

that I've been working on.

And also this year, I was so thrilled

to give my foundation, The Bag Lady,

it's Paula Deen's Bag Lady Foundation, a little boost.

We have started back with our fundraisers

because there's so many people out there

that need help, y'all.

Between, just the natural disasters and just life,

and where everything is right now,

I mean, people need help, they need help.

And so it's up to me to do those fundraisers

so we can disperse the money where it's needed.

And I've got a great board this year.

New board came on, of course,

Sissy is the, she's the head leader of the board.

She's chief board woman, and she does a great job,

like, I said, everybody on my team.

And another thing that I have worked on this past year

as well as previous years is my Helping a Hero.

And it is so satisfying to be around these warriors

and Helping a Hero builds custom homes

for the warrior that is missing body parts,

or blindness, or facial scars.

It's a wonderful organization.

And you know, if you're a double amputee,

you know, the showers that we build for them,

they are incredibly beneficial to that person.

But I have, because my mother and daddy were both amputees,

you know, that gets me.

So I'm so happy to do that.

In fact, I think I'm giving away a home

this coming weekend, I think.

I think I am.

You know, every time I leave one of our gatherings,

I always feel like I'm taking more with me than I left

because to be with these warriors and to see their attitude,

it's just incredible.

These are incredible men and women.

So I'm happy to be a part of that.

And for those of y'all that don't know,

I'm a national ambassador for Helping a Hero.

And I hope that I'm around for a long time

to continue that project.

And of course, every month, I have a book signing

here in Savannah at the Lady and Sons.

And I go to our restaurants in Pigeon Forge,

Myrtle Beach, Nashville, Tennessee, and Branson, Missouri.

How many times a year do I visit those?

- At least once. - Yeah, at least once.

- Multiple times, yeah.

Sometimes I might be at a certain restaurant

three times a year, I just don't know.

But that's always wonderful 'cause one of the favorite,

most favorite things about my work is book signings

to get to meet y'all.

I've had some incredible stories

whispered in my ear over the years

and just love getting to know as many people as I can.

What else have I been doing?

Oh yeah, we went to the Kentucky Derby this year

with Robert and Wendy Jordan, our friends invited us to go,

they had a couple extra tickets.

And I haven't been to the Derby, y'all since,

back before the war.

When I first started my show on a food channel here,

I filmed a show there at the Kentucky Derby,

but I was working, so I didn't get to really,

you know, take everything in.

But it was so wonderful to go back and of course,

Wendy and Robert are so much fun to be with anyway.

So that was great, and we appreciated them

inviting us to go with them.

And as y'all know, my Aunt Peggy has had a fall.

She had a fall.

Gosh, before Labor Day, right, Eddie?

- Yeah. - She had a fall.

And she broke four ribs, so Eddie went and got her

and brought her back here with us.

So we are the caregiver.

I joke and tell folks that we are running

an assisted living home here

because Michael just had his knee replaced.

And so, we have a lot of fun laughing about this house

and the people that live in it.

But I'm so thrilled that Aunt Peggy is here with me

because I know as long as she's here,

she's being taken good care of so.

And that's a privilege for me

because she's meant so much to me over the years.
