- Hey y'all, this is Troy down at the Lady and Sons.
0:02
I'm the general manager
0:04
and I'm making some drinks for you guys.
0:06
Today, we're gonna get ready for the Kentucky Derby.
0:09
We're gonna make a nice blackberry mint julep.
0:14
We're gonna make this in a pitcher
0:15
so you can share it with everybody.
0:17
It's a very easy drink to make.
0:20
Mint always scares people
0:22
'cause you have to muddle it so you really get that flavor.
0:24
We're gonna use a spoon,
0:25
but I'm gonna show you how we do it here at the restaurant
0:27
'cause we make a lot more drinks
0:29
than most people make at their house.
0:30
But this is a very easy way to do it
0:31
with a tool that you're gonna have right in your drawer.
0:35
So first off, we're gonna get our pitcher
0:40
and take one cup of loosely packed mint leaves,
0:43
you pick these off the off the stock,
0:45
a little bit of stem's okay.
0:48
You're just gonna dump it in.
0:55
All right, and then you're gonna grab your wooden spoon
0:58
and you're just gonna push a little bit.
1:00
You're gonna tear those mint leaves up
1:03
so that you have that oil extracted.
1:10
And what I like to do is once it gets to a certain point,
1:13
I add a little bit of my liquid,
1:15
such as my syrup or my bourbon,
1:17
just to make it a little bit easier.
1:21
Especially with this pitcher,
1:22
you need something long just like this.
1:24
Here in the restaurant,
1:25
we use a bottler when we're making it by the drink.
1:29
This thing will save your life.
1:36
Just a little bit more.
1:37
And this drink you can let sit
1:38
in the refrigerator for a couple hours
1:40
and it's really gonna develop that taste just a little bit.
1:43
All right, so this is our blackberry syrup,
1:48
made this this morning,
1:50
our recipes on the website,
1:52
well I did, I had to add a little bit of water
1:54
and a little bit more sugar
1:55
because the blackberries I got
1:56
weren't quite as ripe as I like.
1:58
So to substitute for that,
2:00
just add a little bit more water
2:02
and a little bit more sugar,
2:04
you don't want it to be too sweet.
2:06
But it really brought out that blackberry flavor.
2:10
So we're gonna pour this in
2:13
and what I did was I just made the recipe,
2:15
it was 12 ounces of blackberry, half a cup of sugar
2:20
and I ended up adding another quarter cup of sugar,
2:23
about a cup of water and let it reduce down.
2:27
But you wanted that syrupy consistency.
2:30
Once it reaches that point, then it's good to go.
2:33
So you're gonna give this a good little mix.
2:44
We'll leave this in here 'cause we'll continue to use it
2:46
and this is when I like to put it on ice.
2:57
today we're using Savannah Bourbon.
3:01
They have a bourbon and honey mixture.
3:03
I tried this the other day with the liquor distributor,
3:05
it's absolutely wonderful.
3:06
So we're gonna take a whole cup of this.
3:10
You can use a measuring cup,
3:11
we carry these in the retail store,
3:12
they're really nice to have when you're making big batches.
3:18
So we're gonna do one cup of this.
3:22
You can use any kind of bourbon you have at home.
3:26
I just say don't use the cheap stuff and you should be good.
3:35
This Savannah Bourbon is something you can get
3:38
locally here in Georgia.
3:39
All the liquor stores here in Savannah sell it,
3:41
but also throughout the south
3:44
up into Atlanta and stuff like that.
3:45
You just have to ask for it.
3:48
Next up, we're gonna do three cups of ginger ale.
3:52
(ginger ale gurgling)
4:05
(ginger ale gurgling)
4:11
At home, you can just use the cans
4:13
or the two liter or whatever you have.
4:14
We have this convenient bar gun
4:16
and it makes things so much easier for us.
4:20
You can see that starting to turn that beautiful color.
4:46
My grandma would tell us,
4:47
"That's raspberry tea."
4:48
Don't drink it. That's hers.
4:52
So what I like to do, I love ice drinks,
4:55
especially in Savannah, it gets so hot.
4:59
With this drink, you're gonna put a couple of blackberries,
5:03
you can put a lot if you want,
5:05
and then we garnish it with a mint sprig.
5:08
So you can do it at the end or now.
5:10
Just be careful with your ice so you don't overdo it.
5:39
Kentucky Derby, let's go.
