- Y'all, I just had a wonderful,
0:02
wonderful experience this past weekend.
0:06
Eddie and Michael and I went to Dallas, Texas,
0:11
and then on to Houston, Texas, to do an event
0:15
for The Bag Lady Foundation,
0:19
and I met some wonderful new people.
0:21
One of 'em was dinner at the country club,
0:26
which was wonderful.
0:28
They did all my recipes and they made me so proud,
0:33
'cause when somebody else does my cooking, you know,
0:35
I kind of get a little pit in my stomach,
0:38
and hope that it's good.
0:41
But it was delicious.
0:43
And then the second night in Houston,
0:47
we had a concert with Cam Cody, Cameron Cody.
0:54
And he is one of the most wonderful pianist
0:59
in this entire world,
1:01
and he does concerts all over the place.
1:03
And it was such a wonderful, wonderful experience.
1:07
In fact, I think it's so wonderful
1:09
I wanna share with y'all some of the footage
1:14
from our experience in Texas.
1:18
You know, I love you, Texas folks.
1:21
Y'all have always been so kind, good and loving
1:24
and supportive, and I will always appreciate that.
1:27
So y'all join me on our little trip to Texas.
1:32
And go, Bag Lady!
1:34
(people chattering)
1:35
I'm so happy.
1:38
- We're glad that you're here.
1:39
So, this is your spot right here.
1:43
You're the center of attention.
1:45
(people chattering)
1:47
Well, y'all, we are so glad that you are here.
1:50
This is so exciting for me and for all of us
1:54
to have one of my favorite people
1:56
that I've grown up with comes to Houston.
1:59
And so what I want you to know is that this is a filming
2:03
that will be edited later and released.
2:05
So, if we mess up, we will stop.
2:07
- And if you're not who you're supposed to be with...
2:10
(guests laughing)
2:20
- Remember, if you show up on the Megatron,
2:23
you never know who will.
2:25
(guests laughing)
2:27
- That's right.
2:28
- But this is so important to me
2:30
because at the end of the day,
2:32
this is about helping other people.
2:34
And I think that we both share that love
2:37
for paying it forward.
2:39
- Yes.
2:40
- So what will happen is I will play some music
2:42
and then I will prompt, follow up with a question about...
2:45
Both of us were raised, not far from each other,
2:48
in South Georgia, at different times.
2:50
(guests laughing)
2:55
- Bit earlier. - Really?
2:57
My soul was earlier.
2:58
It's about 80.
3:01
But what I want you to know is that when this concludes,
3:06
we will be going to the garden party
3:08
and we will give you that address soon as it's over.
3:12
And myself and some of us who are, kind of, in charge
3:15
of making that work, we will jet out of here very quickly.
3:18
But what I want you to know is that you will have
3:20
all the time in the world to get your photo made with Paula,
3:23
speak to her and all that.
3:25
So you may see her leave quickly from here,
3:27
but you will have the perfect opportunity.
3:30
It's about two miles, just around the corner,
3:33
where we will dine and have a vid evening.
3:35
It's going be gorgeous weather.
3:36
- Wonderful. - And so...
3:38
- It was pouring down rain when we came.
3:39
I said, this is not gonna be a pretty garden.
3:42
(guests laughing)
3:44
- But it didn't, it's the Lord.
3:45
- Thank goodness, yes.
3:47
- He has made it happen for us.
3:49
So we're gonna go ahead and get started.
3:51
And like I said, if we mess up, this can be edited later,
3:55
you'll see us stop.
3:56
And we really appreciate being here.
3:58
- Oh, I'm thrilled.
4:00
I used to come to Houston and Dallas all the time
4:03
and did live shows.
4:04
And I was telling a couple of my new friends a while ago,
4:08
I was at some beautiful auditorium, a theater,
4:14
quite a few years back, and I'd do live shows on stage.
4:21
And I was running my mouth, and all of a sudden,
4:24
it sounded like the kingdom of wild horses
4:29
behind the drapes on stage.
4:32
And I stopped and I turned around.
4:33
I said, what is that?
4:36
Is everything all right?
4:38
And about that time, they opened the drapes
4:42
and out walked Fresno and Ms. Barbara Bush.
4:46
They had come get welcomed me to Houston.
4:49
And that touched me, like, in incredible ways.
4:58
To me, that said so much about what kind of people they are.
5:03
And I'll never forget.
5:05
And ask me how many pictures I have of that.
5:08
(guests laughing)
5:11
So I have to remember.
5:13
And before we get started, Cam,
5:15
may I introduce my husband? - Excellent.
5:18
- Michael, come on up, where ever you're sitting.
5:22
(guests applauding)
5:25
This is my husband, Michael. - Hello.
5:29
- He loves H-Town.
5:31
He's a harbor pilot.
5:33
So I told you today, I said, you know,
5:35
we could move to Houston and you could keep on working.
5:39
(guests laughing)
5:42
And one more person. What?
5:46
No, thank you.
5:49
Put that down, right in there.
5:53
He tries to give me things he don't want on all the time.
5:56
So, are we ready? - Yes.
5:57
And also, some of the board of The Bag Lady Foundation
6:01
are here. - Yes, yes.
6:02
Yes and I'm going to introduce them.
6:05
Ben and Leland and Diane.

This was so kind, Cam, for you to do this,

8:49
Okay, so I'll quickly try to tell the story.
8:54
In 1989, on June the 19th,
9:01
I started a business called "The Bag Lady."
9:04
I was a point in my life where I knew
9:08
that I had to make some changes
9:10
because my husband's sickness was driving me crazy,
9:15
and he refused to put down the alcohol.
9:20
And I tried for 27 years to change that,
9:24
and I realized the only thing I could change was myself
9:28
because it was turning me into a person that I did not like.
9:33
And so, on June the 19th, a week or two before,
9:40
our income tax refund had come in
9:42
and he gave me $200 to start my business with.
9:46
And I could tell you exactly to this day what I spent it on.
9:51
And I decided I had no talent,
9:56
couldn't sing, couldn't dance, couldn't play the piano.

10:02
you know I can't dance.

I tried, but I'm no dancer.
10:13
So I decided if I have talent, it was in my kitchen

because I had been on a 20-year ride with agoraphobia.
10:23
I was 19 when my father died.
10:25
It was just my...
10:27
You know, as long as he was alive, I was safe.
10:32

10:37
But I later discovered, through a TV show, what I had,
10:43
and I diagnosed myself
10:45
as a sometimes functioning agoraphobic.
10:50
That's terrible. That's terrible.
10:52
And you don't meet agoraphobics. They're at home.

10:59
You know, they're not out shopping and rambling the streets.

11:11
That was where I felt safe.
11:13
I could get in there
11:15
and not think about how frightened I was.
11:18
And unfortunately, four years later,
11:20
my mother and my best friend passed away.
11:23
And my daddy was 40 and my mother was 44.
11:27
So all of my security went out the door.
11:31
I had a 16-year-old brother that I had to finish raising
11:35
and two children under three and an alcoholic husband.
11:40
So it was something else.
11:42
And so my husband moved us to Savannah in 1987,
11:47
and I was devastated.
11:49
I said, I'll never get to be able to go home
11:51

11:56
And so I started dreaming about a way
12:01
