Y'all, today's show is all about cooking with your chillin' or cooking for your chillin'
0:07
So y'all, I've got none other than the gourmet dad, Dean McDermott, in the kitchen with me today
0:13
He's sharing his tips on how to make a dish that's a delight for the kids and then cranks it up a notch for the bigs
0:20
Simple things in cooking make such a difference. We start with Dean's icky, sticky chicken, and then I'll cook up a batch of peanut butter pancakes
0:28
Isn't that yummy? That's awesome. Finally, we make a veggie dip that's out of this world, y'all
0:34
I could drink that stuff, didn't you? I can't stop eating these cookies, Paula. And some sugar cookies for everyone to sink their teeth in
0:51
Well, I am so glad you're here. Well, I'm honored. They are referring to you as the Cooking Gourmet Daddy
0:59
The gourmet dad. The gourmet dad. Dean is Tori Spelling's husband and father of her four children
1:06
Baby daddy. Baby daddy. Having so many kids, I figured, you know what, I am an expert in this field
1:14
And having children, he's an expert. Yeah, I'm really good at that. I'm really good at that
1:18
Having so many kids, I got tired of being a short order cook because this one only wants grilled cheese, this one wants butter noodles
1:23
So I thought, you know what, I need to come up with something where I make a gourmet meal
1:28
for the grown-ups and then with a few omissions and a few tips and tricks, make it kid-friendly
1:32
So, you know, they're eating the same thing you are. So while we're talking about these precious children we've got, tell me what we're going to be making
1:40
We're going to be making the Gourmet Dad's Icky Sticky Chicken. Icky Sticky Chicken
1:44
I love the name of that, Dave. You know, if you make... It already sounds like a finger-licking something
1:49
And the kids giggle every time I make it for them. So if you make it interesting and funny for the kids, they'll love it
1:55
And, of course, include them because they're more apt to try something that they've helped make
2:00
Absolutely. I'm a firm believer in that. All right, so what is that right there
2:04
I got a quarter cup of all-purpose flour. Uh-huh. And then I'm going to use a quarter cup of cornstarch
2:11
Now, what does that do to it? Cornstarch makes it crispy. Okay
2:15
Do you beat this? One side is thicker than the other, so I like to keep it uniform
2:19
So I use the palm of my hand, but if you want to beat it up. This, when you're bad in Paula Deen's kitchen, that's my paddle
2:28
Actually, I really like that. Honey, I'm sorry. He's staying with me, Tori
2:42
In my flour and coarse starch, I added some salt, and I use white pepper
2:47
Do you? When I do stuff for the kids. Why, so they can't see it? They can't see it. It's funny, some of the things they get in their head, right
2:53
Oh, yeah. All right, now, is that about right? That'll work. Okay, that's kind of weird. That'll work for me. Anything you do, I'll make work
2:58
Okay. We'll get about four tablespoons of olive oil. I'm going to do four laps around this fry pan. Okay
3:05
And that's about four tablespoons. So this is essentially really kind of like a stir fry
3:11
Yeah. Nice and hot, a little bit of oil. Yes. And, you know, we'll get it nice and crispy
3:16
Yes. And then we're going to toss it in some honey. I've just put the little cubed chicken pieces in cornstarch and flour
3:28
How long have you been cooking, Dean? I've been cooking since I've been about eight years old
3:32
So you cook with your mama? So yeah, my mom believed that to be a proper gentleman
3:37
that you should learn how to cook and clean. And she taught me both
3:41
Food is the vehicle that gets us to where we want to be with the people that we love and the time that we treasure
3:47
You know, life moves pretty fast, especially when you have kids. So this is what we're looking for
3:51
See, it's just got that little tiny crust. Right. And it's got a nice little crunch on it, and it's golden brown
3:58
I'm going to pull that one because there's nothing worse than overcooked chicken. I know
4:02
And pull that one. Well, you want me to kind of handle that, Dean, and you start on the sauce
4:07
Sure, sure. The sauce is really, really super simple. I'm going to wow you with a Paula Deen tip that I've seen on your show
4:15
Okay, yay. So your honey doesn't stick. You got it, baby. A little nonstick cooking spray
4:21
You got it. Okay, so this is going to take about 45 minutes
4:26
Uh-huh. 45 minutes. Come on. You got a tip for this? We'll see y'all tomorrow as we get our honey measured
4:36
Kids in the kitchen, Dean, it's certainly cooking, learning to cook. I think it builds their self-esteem
4:45
Absolutely. You know, and the ability to complete a project. From start to finish
4:51
I didn't use all the chicken, so I'm not going to use the whole quarter cup. Okay, okay
4:55
And then, if you mind, darling, a pinch of salt. Okie doke, yum
4:59
Love sweet and salty. Right. Is that enough for you? Give it a little toss
5:03
You know, this is so, so easy to do. And, you know, the plating is fun. Uh-huh
5:09
And kids love stuff on a stick So Yes You can find these at a kitchen store a party store Oh that an elephant
5:20
It's an elephant, and I think that's the camel. You can use toothpicks
5:23
Let the kids color them with some markers and decorate them or lollipop sticks
5:27
Just let them decorate and draw on them. Yeah, I try. Of course, please
5:31
Are you kidding? Mm. It's just so simple, but you got that little crunch
5:40
I love the salt and the honey. Easy peasy, right? Mm-hmm. Now, for the grown-up version, real super simple
5:48
Add some chili flake. A little lime zest. Get that in the mix
5:55
And then, I love red cabbage. So just a little red cabbage with a bit of vinegar
6:02
Just take some butter lettuce. Love butter lettuce. Line it. Oh, okay
6:07
And then throw some chicken on there. and you got yourself a little grown-up wrap. Oh, my gosh
6:11
I really want to taste this. I love wraps. One protein, two different outcomes
6:20
That lime is so goddamn good. Lime? Simple things in cooking make such a difference
6:26
It's so stinking good. Wow. Coming up. Oh, gosh. Okay, what do we got here
6:34
We're making peanut butter pancakes, But I'm getting a little distracted. I dare any of y'all to come have to stand next to this man and cook
6:43
And keep your mind on your cooking. Then, hey, Tori, I get to meet Dean's family
6:49
Hey, Stella, it's Aunt Paula. And later, my fun zone sugar cookies turns this dad into a little boy
6:57
I have to admit, when you weren't looking, I ate two of them. Oh, you did? Let's make cookies
7:11
Okay. So I have measured you out a cup and a half of confectionate sugar
7:20
and you're sifting that for me. And what I'm going to need for you to do, Dean, is add one cup of butter
7:27
And here you've got a few knots, so I'll just get those in there
7:32
And you're going to need to add one egg. Okay. So I'll crack that for you
7:37
Thank you. And then you want one stick in? No, just the full cup
7:41
There we go. And while you're doing that, I'm going to measure out our dry ingredients
7:45
I'm going to need two and a half cups of all-purpose flour. I'm going to add in one teaspoon of baking soda
7:53
All right, now I'm adding one teaspoon of crema tarta. All right, I'm going to put the dry ingredients in here
7:59
and add a teaspoon of almond flavoring, flavoring, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and then just mix it up well
8:10
What consistency is this supposed to be? Is that right? It looks like I've done something wrong
8:14
No, you haven't. No? Okay. Now, let's see if we can get a little bit of that batter kind of flung
8:19
off. The kids obviously love cookies, any kind of cookies. Absolutely. And that's how I got them
8:24
started being interested in cooking. And of course, when you let them shape the cookie and
8:29
and do whatever they like. They make little designs and stuff. My 14-year-old, he made a couple of cookies that were a little X-rated
8:38
but a 14-year-old's going to do that. What did he make? I like his sense of humor
8:48
He's a funny kid. I'd have been right there with him. So now this goes in the fridge
8:53
Yeah, but let's separate it because we actually want to chill this for maybe a couple hours, Dean
9:01
so it won't stick. There's one for you. Thank you. And a ball for you
9:08
Okay, now why do we chill it? Because see how sticky it is
9:14
You know, and we need for it to roll out that almond extract in there
9:19
So good. So good. Mm-mm-mm. And chilling the dough, y'all, just makes them easier to roll out
9:26
All right, so we're going to put those in there. Now I'm going to show you my peanut butter pancakes
9:32
And I have to say, these are a favorite of a lot of the children
9:37
I'm going to start with flour, and I'm going to use one and a fourth cup all-purpose flour
9:44
You mean confectioner's sugar? Oh, my gosh. Thank you, baby. Those would have been just a sweet pancake
9:55
I was torn. I was really torn. Should I just let her go? No. Thank you
10:00
Thank you. I couldn't do that to you. And you saved my honey
10:06
All right. We're using one and a fourth cup of all-purpose flour
10:10
Okay. Not confectionate sugar. I can do the wet stuff? Yes, please do the wet
10:15
The one egg. And a cup of milk. A cup of milk
10:19
Now, I'm going to put in two tablespoons. of regular sugar. Oh look I almost put it in the canister Dean You have got me You have got me flustered honey I going to be honest All right what is this
10:37
It is. What is it? That's baking powder. So one tablespoon of baking powder
10:48
About a fourth of a teaspoon of salt. Like I said, I dare any of y'all
10:53
to come have to stand next to this man and cook and keep your mind on your cooking
10:59
If you would mix that with that, please, Dean. Here, I've got a couple of things that all children love
11:08
I've got some melted butter, and I've got a half a cup of melted peanut butter
11:14
All right, so I'm going to add the butter. In goes the peanut butter
11:23
Yum. Now for my pancakes, Dean, I like to use a vegetable oil, not butter
11:31
Because the butter, you know, kind of burns. It scorches, absolutely. Yes. I'm just going to kind of pour a little bit of this right down the middle
11:38
What size pancake you like? I love little silver dollars. Silver dollars
11:42
You got it. They smell so good. Coming up, there's a stack of pancakes that needs to get it
11:51
Isn't that yummy? That's awesome. And then getting the kids to eat their veggies is a cinch, y'all, with Dean's delicious gourmet dip
11:59
I mean, I just love that. But first, we're going to call his wife, Tori Spelling, y'all
12:06
Hey, Tori! Bye! Hey, Mama
12:19
Y'all, we've got Tori. Hey, Tori. Hi. Tori, I've been standing up here talking to your husband
12:28
and this man just adores you and those children. He adores you
12:36
We left him right back. And Liam's here. He made something for you
12:40
What did he make? Cocoa Krispies with French toast on it. Cocoa Krispies with French toast on it
12:48
That sounds so good, buddy. Oh, Lim, I'm just drooling right now
12:57
Hey, baby. Hey, Hattie. Hattie. Tori. And that's Finn. Finn. Oh, how precious
13:09
You look just like Hattie. Where's Stella, babe? Hey, Stella. It's Aunt Paula
13:18
You're so pretty. Y'all take care. Thank you. We love you. Love you, baby
13:25
Love you, too. Bye. Bye, dude. Bye. I love you. Bye, Hattie Cat
13:31
Oh. Mwah. Aw. So there's my brood. I know you can't wait to get home to them
13:38
I can't wait to make these for them. They're going to love it. Isn't that yummy
13:46
That's awesome. The peanut butter and bananas are so good together. And then the honey
13:51
To my way of thinking, Dean, moderation truly is the key. If you can train your body to have like a couple of bites
14:02
All right, now I know what it tastes like. I know it's delicious. Now you can move on
14:06
Now it's time to move on to cookies, y'all. Yes, bring it
14:12
The dough is good and chilled. See how firm that dough got, Dean
14:17
You could roll this in a perfect ball and slice them, but the children really like shapes
14:24
Right. Okay. So I'm going to let you be the roller, okay? Tell me about the first time you ever saw Tori
14:36
Was it like love at first sight? It was totally love at first sight
14:40
I went up to Ottawa, Canada to do a movie. My friend, he's a director, he called me up and he's like
14:44
Hey, Dino, do you want to do a movie with Tori Spelling? And I'm like, yeah, I've had a crush on her since 90210
14:50
Okay, baby, I think that's probably good. And I walked into the office, and she was there with the director
14:56
And our eyes locked, and that was it. It was on. We were instantly in love
15:03
Love at first sight. Well, it's just one of the sweetest love stories that I've heard, Dean
15:09
She completely changed my life. Apparently, you changed hers, too. A little bit
15:17
A little bit. And you know what's fun is if you don't have the cutters, you can roll it out and use a knife
15:23
You can cut out the letters for the kids' names. Yes. They love that
15:27
Frosting them afterwards. Yes. So, 375, nine minutes. Nine minutes? What can we do in nine minutes
15:36
Oh, I don't know. We'll think of something. I'm sure you'll think of something. this gourmet dad veggie dip is so good y It make you flip Shooters Dip shooters
15:50
And we top it all off with some icing on our cookies
15:54
That's Stella's favorite color, by the way. Is it? I'm going to start frosting cookies because you know what
16:10
I want to send Tori and your children home some cookies. Oh, that's really sweet
16:15
So I'm going to start decorating these cookies. And y'all, I'm using a store-bought frosting
16:22
And to thicken it up, I added a little confectionate sugar to it to get it just a little bit tighter
16:30
And we used a gel food coloring. That's Stella's favorite color, by the way
16:35
Is it? Yep. And you know what? Cookies are great treats, but also I like to throw in something healthy
16:40
Yes. So I'll do like a veggie dip. Over here, Paula, I got a little dip going here
16:46
I got about a cup of plain yogurt. Instead of using a buttermilk kind of base sour cream
16:52
I thought just keep it a little lighter for the kids. You want to go easy on the kid version
16:56
So you usually make the kid version first. So that way you can put some off to the side for them
17:02
And then you can get into the adult stuff. So I just put in just a little bit
17:07
Again, kids don't like a lot of different colors and bits and bobs in their stuff
17:15
Go a little bit of dill. Really easy on the dill because dill can be really strong
17:19
Still strong, isn't it? So you can see just all the little, it's just the tiniest, tiniest bit
17:26
A little bit of white pepper, again, so the kids can taste it but can't see it
17:30
Just a little bit of lemon juice for the kitties. Now, remember, Dean, our cookies have the almond flavoring in it
17:37
I have to admit, when you weren't looking, I ate two of them. Oh, you did
17:42
And they're really, really, really good. I'm glad. Okay, so I'm going to take another bowl and just take out the kid's version
17:53
So this is the grown-up version. I'm going to do up some more chives, a little more dill, freshly minced garlic
18:01
Jamie and Brooke have found that if they give their children any kind of dip for their veggies
18:08
they eat it so much better. That's the key. Kids love to dip and they like to poke and dip. Yes
18:15
You name it. These colors are so pretty. I am loving this purple
18:21
I love that color. You should get a car in that car. I know. I'm going to put in a little ginger
18:29
A little more salt and pepper, some chili flakes. Lemon juice and lemon zest, and you've got a grown-up version
18:39
Okay, so I'm just going to put the kitties in. and you know the thing I love about this too
18:44
is you put this out when you're having friends over and the kids
18:48
feel like you know they're participating with the grown ups they're part of the party too
18:53
you can definitely discern which is the grown up one so the kids will steer clear of that
18:57
ok children's grown up may I? yeah of course are you kidding mmm mmm
19:07
that's good fresh Good. I mean, I just love that. How good would this be on fish
19:17
The dill. Mm-hmm. Just, mm. I will. It's so good. I want a cookie
19:23
All right, well, come down here and see what I've done. Would you make one more? Of course
19:27
I didn't make one in that. All right, now, I'm going to write all the children's names on here, okay? Okay
19:35
Liam. That's one. Stella. Love that name. And Hattie. These are good
19:43
Are they good? I have such a sweet tooth. Like, I just, I love sweets. So does my husband
19:50
And Finn. We're talking all your names. We thought Hattie was a boy
19:55
So we, she was going to be Finn. But then when she came out, it was like, oh, we don't even have a girl name
20:02
Now, how much difference between this one and that one? He's five months
20:07
She's 14 months. You know, I think I'd have to kill you. All I know is I would kill him
20:14
You almost did. That's my story. Shooters. Dip shooters. And I'm sticking to it
20:22
I could drink that stuff, didn't you? I can't stop eating these cookies, Paula
20:26
I love the almond extract. I really love this. It's a real thrill to be able to cook with you
20:32
It is. It's a thrill. If you don't know him or know about him, get to know him
20:37
Because this man is the real deal, y'all. That is so sweet
20:43
He is the real deal. So, I don't know what else to say. Cheers
20:47
Besides loving best dishes, y'all. It's really good. It's really good. It's sweet and it's tart
