I'm in here with my favorite oldest son, Jamie
0:03
First up, we're fixing an all-time favorite. Tomato mac and cheese. It just screams family
0:11
Then Jamie puts a Dean twist on an English pea salad. Bacon and mayonnaise
0:17
Come on, please. Nothing says home cooking, y'all, like Brooke's homemade meatloaf
0:25
My favorite thing in the world to eat. And we're having the perfect sweet-on-sweet ending
0:31
Toffee gooey butter cake with an icy coffee punch. I think I just got a cavity
0:42
Y'all recognize that honey? I'd know that honey anywhere. That honey belongs to my oldest son, Jamie
0:52
And I'm in here in the kitchen with him today. We're gonna share some family recipes with you
0:57
We've got a recipe from Brooke. We've got a recipe from Jamie
1:03
And we got a recipe from Mama. So we're gonna have fun today
1:08
Bless his little bones. He ain't got no Harley butt at all
1:14
Not Harley or voice today. I know, y'all. He went to the Georgia-Alabama game
1:22
Yes, ma'am. I did this all in the first 10 minutes of the football game
1:27
Because after that, it was pretty quiet. It was still fun. Bobby and I, we don't get a chance to do things together very often
1:32
so we had an awesome weekend. He and Bobby went together, and it was... These are done. I'm going to drain them, okay? Okay
1:37
Y'all, we're going to make a macaroni and cheese. This is a little different from what we serve at the Lady and Sons
1:43
This is our version, y'all, of a tomato mac and cheese. All right, son, I'll start melting that butter
1:50
I need for you to just dice me up a couple of tablespoons of onion
1:55
And I'm going to put about four tablespoons of butter in here and get that going
2:01
We're going to saute those onions off in this butter that we've got melting
2:06
Oh, son, I'm going to drop your tomatoes in the pot. Couple of whole tomatoes down into boiling water, y'all
2:13
Just for a minute or so. That will just help us, you know, peel them a lot easier
2:18
and we're going to saute these onions until they're just a little bit limp
2:24
Yeah, that's about two tablespoons. Yeah, you know, and that's every recipe I do
2:31
Put more, take out less, depending on what you like. If you don't like onions, then don't put them at all
2:37
I love the flavor of onions and tomatoes and cheese, kind of like the tomato pie that we do
2:42
Oh, yeah, exactly. So Jack's a big fan of macaroni. Look at his face when I mention Jack's name, y'all
2:53
Look at that face. I miss him. I left him an hour ago, and I miss him already
2:59
Listen, I don't blame you, son. You can imagine when I have to go two and three days a week without seeing that little fella
3:06
Mom, I'm going to add our dry mustard. We're doing three quarters of a tablespoon. Okie doke
3:11
That looks about right. And we're going to do a quarter of a teaspoon of paprika
3:17
And the paprika is just going to help give our macaroni and cheese some color
3:21
And to this, we're going to add four tablespoons of flour and some milk to kind of thicken this up
3:27
So you can see right away that we're making a cheese sauce, aren't we, son, for our macaroni and cheese
3:35
Yesterday, I called Jamie and I said, well, let me speak to Jack, please
3:41
And Jack gets on the phone and he says, I love a turkey
3:47
Two cups of milk, y'all. And he can't say granny, and it comes out guinea
3:52
I said, yeah, like guinea pig. Or like, he's trying to learn how to say gimme, I think. Gimme
4:01
But you know what? I'm like every other grandmother out there. You know, I don't care what they call me, as long as they call me
4:12
All right, so this will tighten up in just a minute, son. I'm going to take our tomatoes out and then drop them in ice water
4:20
Stop that cooking because we don't want mushy tomatoes. I'll take one of these tomatoes
4:27
And I'm going to slice up our tomatoes. And look how easy that skin just slips right off those tomatoes
4:36
It leaves you a lot more tomato to work with. Sure does. You get every bite of that tomato, y'all
4:41
But you've got to be careful not to overcook them. It doesn't take but a second. Oh, it doesn't. It doesn't take but a pure second
4:48
So what's your brother doing today? I'm sure he's down at the restaurant playing famous
4:53
Playing famous. Taking pictures, trying to explain where you are. Now that the tomatoes are peeled, we can slice them up
5:03
I'm going to add a little salt to this, Mom. Okay. All right, so we... Oh, that looks perfect, son
5:08
I going to cut that off now and I going to throw in our cheese Our two cups of cheese Mm Ooh that looks so good Now I got a prepared casserole dish back here
5:22
When I say prepared, I've sprayed it so it won't stick so badly. So, son, just add your noodles into there
5:31
And let's stir it around. All right, so, son, just pour that in your casserole dish
5:37
and I'll get a spatula out to help you. I'm going to get every bit of that good old cheese sauce out of there
5:48
This looks delicious. All right, so we're just going to lay our tomatoes on there
5:56
So there we go. Doesn't that look good? You're going to put about two more cups on top of that
6:01
Yeah, well, actually, the recipe calls, son, for one cup towards the end
6:06
Now, I'm going to put just a little bit of salt on those tomatoes
6:10
because they need enhancing just a little bit. And I'm going to put just a little bit of fresh ground pepper
6:20
you know, just kind of floating around on top of those tomatoes. All right, so in the oven, son, that goes 375 for about 45 minutes
6:30
But like I said, 30 minutes may do you on it. Up next, we're fixing the perfect salad to go with our family meal
6:39
Doesn't this look delicious? And Jamie can't hardly wait to make Brooke's mouth-watering meatloaf
6:47
I'm so excited that I get to eat meatloaf today, I can't tell you. And stick around for two of the most sinful dinged desserts you'll ever put in your mouth
6:56
We are so bad, Mama. Bad to the bone. Hey, y'all. Welcome back
7:05
Today is about all in the family, and we're cooking up family recipes
7:09
I'm in here with my favorite oldest son, Jamie, and we're fixing Jamie's recipe for an English pea salad
7:18
I have our eggs ready. Now, I want to run those under cold water
7:24
because they're going to peel easier for us if they're nice and cold
7:28
And I just bam those eggs on the counter and kind of give them a little roll and crunch them up good
7:36
so that that shell just comes right on off. Look how beautiful those peas are
7:41
And that's just a 10-ounce package of frozen peas. Mom, I got our bacon chopped up
7:46
I'm just going to add the bacon to the peas. Okay. And if you'll do those eggs
7:52
And that bacon is beautiful. Isn't that so pretty? Just perfect. We're going to dress this out, and this is the easiest thing, y'all
7:59
It's three tablespoons of mayonnaise. Yeah, and you know, it really doesn't take much for this type of salad
8:07
because you got the moisture from your peas. And we're going to say two teaspoons of lemon juice
8:13
Okay. It looks good. Now, smell that fresh lemon juice. This is the way I do my eggs
8:21
I just take them and I mash them. To me, that's so much easier than cutting them
8:26
just squeeze, squeeze, squeeze. How about the eggs? Can I just go ahead and kind of scoop those in
8:35
I'm going to put this dressing on. Okay. I don't want to put too much
8:38
I don't want to be too wet. So I'm going to just add a little bit and see
8:43
And y'all can do this one of two ways. If you want to do this when the bake is still hot
8:47
and have the peas at room temperature with the eggs, but Mama always served hers cold
8:52
That's very pretty. Can I dump the cheese in for you? Sure. And that's about one cup of shredded cheddar cheese
8:59
So I like my English pea salad cold too. Mom, if you will, hand me some wrap. Okay
9:04
I'm going to refrigerate this. Okie doke. Then we'll get started on my favorite thing in the world to eat, my wife's meatloaf
9:11
Lots of times when you and I are talking, you'll say, Brooke's cooking meatloaf tonight
9:18
It really, truly is. And it's reason number 312 why I'm overweight
9:22
Because when Brooke makes a meatloaf, I eat meatloaf for dinner. And then for dessert, I have a meatloaf sandwich on white bread with mayonnaise
9:29
I love a meatloaf sandwich. That's my favorite dessert. So we're doing two of my favorites today
9:33
So good, y'all. It's a simple recipe, and I think what sets it apart is the glaze that we're going to put on top, and we'll get to that
9:41
But first, Mama, we're going to chop up a medium onion. And that's pretty big for a medium onion, but I love it
9:46
Yeah, this is kind of like a large onion. I've got two pounds of ground beef
9:50
I don't want to use the leanest that I can find because there's so much flavor in the fat
9:53
And you know I love mixing the meats for my meatloaf. I'll get ground chicken or either a sausage that will really bring in other flavors
10:06
We're going to put about three tablespoons of ketchup in on this. So all this is, y'all, is just ketchup, a little bit of salt
10:15
We're going to do a little bit of pepper. I'm going to crack two eggs into this
10:20
And lastly, I'm gonna rip up one piece of white bread to kind of hold it all together
10:25
And that it I gonna add our onion and you can mix it all together And this is a lot of onion in here If my wife was here she probably tis me for putting this much onion in here
10:38
but it was a little big, but it'll be fine. Okay, if you would, get our loaf pan right there behind us
10:44
If you want to, Mama, you can put this in here, and then we'll get started on a glaze, and I'm gonna rinse my hands real quick. Okie-doke
10:49
And I'm just pressing our mixture down into a 9x5 loaf pan
10:58
We're going to put this in the oven for 30 minutes, and once it's halfway through cooking, we're going to add this glaze to it
11:04
And this is simple, too. So I've got a quarter of a cup of ketchup
11:08
one tablespoon of Dijon mustard. The big surprise is brown sugar. And Jamie's adding two teaspoons of brown sugar
11:19
When it comes out of the oven, it's sticky, sweet. Yeah. It's the sweet and savory flavor
11:25
I think that it kind of, that's what makes people such a big fan of this recipe
11:31
And plus, it's so simple. When I have meatloaf, I love the top just coated with ketchup because it does it like candies, and it's so good
11:40
All right, well, I'm going to put this in the oven for you, son. And we're going to bake this, what did you say, for 30 minutes
11:46
Yes, ma'am, we're going to cook this halfway through. We put it on 350, 375. Let's bake it 30 minutes, and we're going to brush our top on
11:52
We're going to let it go another 30 minutes. Oh, God. Okay, so in the oven, this goes
11:58
And you know what? Our macaroni and cheese looks so good. Let me help you, Mom
12:02
Yeah, son, if you'd take that out and bring it over there
12:06
and let's put the top layer of cheese on it. Look at those tomatoes on there
12:13
Doesn't this look delicious? Yes, ma'am. Look at all that cheese, y'all
12:18
melting in there. Oh, my goodness. You talking about meals that are so humble
12:26
and have been around our whole lives, this meal is definitely one of them
12:34
It just screams family. Well, let's put that back in the oven, son
12:40
I'll open the door if you'd slip that back in. And we're just gonna let that cheese
12:44
melt on top. Coming up, a signature Dean family recipe. It just warms our heart to see
12:52
the way people love this dish. And later, we're gonna knock you out with the perfect punch
12:58
y'all. So what are you doing over there, son? This has been in the oven for 30 minutes, Mom
13:08
so I'm gonna add our finishing glaze to the top of this meatloaf
13:12
I'm really gonna put it on here. I like a lot of... How's the mac and cheese looking
13:16
And, oh, never mind. I see how it's doing. Jesus melted all of those tomatoes, y'all
13:25
All right. You want to pull out the mac and cheese, son? Yes, sir. I think it's ready
13:30
And if we need to, when the meatloaf is ready, we can toss the macaroni and cheese back in the oven
13:37
and just heat it up at the last minute. The last dish that we're going to be preparing for y'all today
13:44
I swear to Pete, I could do this in my sleep. We're going to be making a toffee chip gooey butter cake
13:52
And I love this recipe. All right, so we're going to just use a yellow cake mix, y'all
13:59
I'm melting us back here, y'all. Two sticks of butter. Now, Jamie has just added one egg
14:07
And this is going to be a real thick, thick mixture. and it's going to be the crust to our gooey butter cake
14:16
I'm going to spray this pan on. Son, how many different gooey butter cakes have we made
14:23
I can't even count. If you can put it on a counter, we have mixed it in a gooey butter cake
14:29
Now that our butter is melted, I'll just divide it up. So this is our half a cup
14:34
That's a half a cup. And then we've got a half a cup left over there
14:39
Now we're just going to mix this up, y'all, and then we're going to pat it into the bottom of our pan
14:49
While Jamie's patting our mixture into the pan, I'll put together our filling
14:54
I've got an 8-ounce package of cream cheese, which has come to room temperature
14:59
and a bag of sugar. And that's a 16-ounce bag of confectioner's sugar
15:05
And I'm going to add our other half a cup of melted butter
15:10
Hence the name gooey butter cake, y'all. This is two eggs in the top we're going to add here, y'all
15:19
I'll add one teaspoon of vanilla extract. All right, so son, just beat the heck out of that
15:27
See how quickly we have put this thing together? It's an amazing dessert for the amount of effort that it takes to make it
15:36
To me the only way you can mess this recipe up is your baking time You don want to bake this so long that it like a cake You want it to have that little bit of a gooey center Let add our toffee bits to that now
15:54
Now, I'm going to put about a cup or as much as I daggum please
15:59
Well, I daggum wished you'd pleased more. This recipe is an old recipe, y'all
16:05
And I started making this 19 years ago. I made it every day to go in Jamie and Bobby's basket for the bag lady
16:17
And if I missed a day without having a gooey butter cake, people would get real upset with the boys
16:24
All we're going to do is pour that on top of that crust, put it in the oven at 350
16:31
And I'm going to bake this probably in my oven, son, for about 40 minutes
16:36
As high as your meatloaf. If you'll bring that meatloaf out, Jamie, I'll get our garden piece salad
16:43
Jamie? Yes, ma'am. Yes, ma'am. Looking good, son. Looking good. Mmm. I'm going to just slice this up a piece
16:55
Mmm. Look at that. Ooh. Oh, ooh. I can see why you love for your wife to cook you that meatloaf
17:07
And I can see why you so love a meatloaf sandwich. Let's try our macs
17:15
Yeah, a little mac and cheese. Dig in, sonny. I don't know what to try first
17:21
I was going to say I don't either, but I'm going straight for the meat
17:25
I'm going to try the macaroni with the tomatoes. Oh, Jamie. That's so good
17:31
So basic. So delicious. So delicious. That tomato and macaroni is awesome
17:40
Mmm. The bacon is so good in that piece, Howard. Mmm. Ooh, and that macaroni and cheese with the tomato on top, it's so pretty
17:50
Gracious. Can I be on your show tomorrow? Yes, tomorrow is all about diet day
17:59
We're going to have whey toast and water. Feel free to come by
18:04
So hell has frozen over. Up next. This is what you get for growing up in my mama's house, y'all
18:12
I'm substituting ice cubes with ice cream. Jamie and I have one more scrumptious surprise for y'all
18:25
Hey, y'all. We're back here at Mama's show, and Mama's eating ice cream. So gooey butter cake is not quite rich and sweet enough for us
18:36
So we've got this cocktail that we're going to pair with it
18:40
Jamie's Fixness and Icy Coffee Punch. What you're going to start with is three cups of your coffee
18:47
Michael's coffee. Captain Michael's coffee. Captain's choice. And we're going to put about a half a cup of chocolate syrup in here
18:55
While Jamie's mixing up that recipe. Let me show you what the gooey butter cake looks like
19:03
See that real gooey top? We are so bad, Mama. Four cups of milk
19:11
And this will hold in the refrigerator, won't it, son? So you can make up this much and, you know, just cover it and keep it in the fridge
19:20
So we'll add our ice cream. This is what you get for growing up in my Mama's house, y'all
19:26
I'm substituting ice cubes with ice cream. Does that make me a bad mama, y'all
19:33
No, it doesn't. It just makes me have to buy a new belt just about every other week
19:39
I think this is what most people are thirsty for after they finish a meatloaf and macaroni and cheese dinner
19:46
Look at that. Jamie, I'm going to get us some spoons, son
19:51
You know, it takes so little to make me happy. And I think I want a straw
20:00
How about you? I'll take a straw. Okay, I'm going to... Your stomach's growling still
20:07
That's the sound of settling. So good. Jamie, this is very, very rich
20:18
Well, have a bite of gooey butter cake. This is so good, y'all, with the toffee in it
20:26
I think I just got a cavity. You think you just got a cavity
20:31
And this is so delicious, my coffee and ice cream and chocolate syrup. You know, there'll be many more days where it's all in the family
20:39
because that's what we're about, all in the family. I've had a great time with y'all, and as usual
20:46
Jamie and I always, oh, thank you, my darling, We always, always, always send y'all loving best dishes
20:54
from our family to y'alls. Have a great day
