- Y'all, I'm sharing my recipe for Fancy Green Beans
0:03
for your Christmas table.
0:05
A lot of people, uh-oh,
0:08
slowing down on the boiling.
0:09
Let's get it kicked back up.
0:13
You know, down south we love our green beans cooked,
0:16
you know, the southern way.
0:18
But these are so pretty and tasty for a more formal table.
0:25
So, I hope that you would try these.
0:27
I've got a pound and a half of green beans,
0:30
and I'm gonna add 'em to the boiling water.
0:36
It had been boiling real good 'til I took the lid off.
0:44
All right, so I'm gonna cook these for four to five minutes,
0:48
you know, until they turn a real pretty bright green.
0:52
- [Theresa] Puttin' on the timer.
0:54
And can you get me a bowl of ice?
0:57
- [Theresa] I'm already ready.
0:58
- Thank you, thank you, Theresa.
1:02
All right, so the green beans are in.
1:05
- [Theresa] That's a big enough bowl.
1:07
- Yeah, for starters, yeah, yeah.
1:18
I'm gonna get this pan goin'.
1:24
And I'm putting in two slices of bacon,
1:30
but I am gonna cut it up a little bit.
1:37
Sometimes it's just easier to cut bacon with the scissors.
1:49
So, that is what I'm gonna do.
1:58
You have to have a super sharp knife
2:01
to cook something as sticky as bacon.
2:12
You know, seeing these scissors reminds me
2:15
of long, long ago when my children are little,
2:22
I just did not have the money to go to a beauty shop.
2:27
And so, my children's father, Jimmy Deen,
2:30
he thought there was nothing that he could not do,
2:32
and he was real handy.
2:34
He was, I don't care what I asked him for,
2:38
he could do it, and he was handy.
2:41
Didn't have a lazy bone in his body.
2:44
So I said, "Jimmy, I cannot afford to go to beauty shop.
2:49
"Would you cut my hair, please?"
2:52
And I mean, there's nothing that he wouldn't,
2:56
that he wouldn't tackle.
2:59
And so, he got the very first piece
3:04
and brought it up and had my hair between his fingers
3:08
and cut the top of his knuckle off with those scissors
3:13
and had to go to the emergency room.
3:15
So, I should have paid for a haircut
3:17
rather than the emergency room, y'all.
3:23
You know we lost him.
3:25
It's been a year, hasn't it, Eddie?
3:27
- [Theresa] Two. - Two years?
3:29
- [Eddie] It'll be two years in December.
3:32
I can't hardly believe it's been two years.
3:37
Oh, I forgot to put my lemon juice in the boiling water
3:41
with the green beans.
3:44
So, the lemon juice will help keep them
3:48
a pretty, pretty bright green color.
3:51
Okay, we actually let those cook about six minutes,
3:54
wouldn't you say, Theresa?
3:59
- [Theresa] We definitely went over the four minute mark.
4:02
- Yes, but look, these are still nice and crisp.
4:09
And I'm gonna get 'em off of that,
4:13
out of that hot water,
4:14
'cause they'll continue to cook if I don't,
4:20
and let me move that out of the way, whoa.
4:28
All right, I'm gonna rinse these with cold water
4:32
and try to cool 'em off a little bit
4:34
so it won't melt all of my ice.
4:41
Oh, these are pretty.
4:44
And that lemon juice kept them,
4:50
kept them pretty and green.
4:53
All right, now we're gon' switch again.
5:05
While our green beans are chilling.
5:10
In fact, if you think they're cold enough,
5:12
we actually need to drain them again.
5:15
You know, maybe pat 'em to get the water off.
5:18
I've got our bacon cooking.
5:23
- [Theresa] I think they're good,
5:24
don't you? - Oh yeah, I think so.
5:27
So, you can cook those as crisp as you want it.
5:32
I'm not real crazy about getting 'em super crisp.
5:36
So, I'm gonna add our bell pepper and our onions.
5:40
And we are gonna cook this
5:42
for just a couple of more minutes
5:47
because we want it to remain crispy as well.
5:50
All right, so these are still kind of nice and crisp,
5:54
so I'm gonna take my carry karaoke,
6:00
that's a cross between teriyaki and karaoke.
6:04
What? - [Eddie] Karaoke.
6:07
- [Theresa] I'm not even following you.
6:10
- All right, so I'm gonna add our butter
6:14
and a little bit of honey.
6:25
And then, where'd my, oh, here they are.
6:29
All right, I'm gonna put these back over the fire
6:38
and bring these back up to heat.
6:43
They're cold as ice, Theresa,
6:45
aren't they? - [Theresa] I know.
6:53
- So, this'll be a fun way to eat your green beans.
7:00
You know, for a change.
7:02
(utensils clattering)
7:06
All right, and I'm gonna add our cashews.
7:16
I just want to stir everything around.
7:22
Look how pretty that is.
7:25
Get everything hot again.
7:26
Isn't that a pretty dish?
7:29
You know what I would love to add, you know,
7:33
I even changed my own recipes.
7:36
I would love some portobello mushrooms sliced in that.
7:42
But I could eat portobello mushrooms every day of my life.
7:49
All right, so now we're gonna pour our teriyaki
7:54
and our honey and our butter over there.
7:58
And that's gonna be the sauce
8:01
for these beautiful green beans.
8:03
- [Theresa] That's pretty.
8:09
Beautiful for your Christmas table, y'all.
8:15
Get some of that teriyaki sauce on this side.
8:19
- [Eddie] Smells really good.
8:20
- Uh huh, doesn't it smell really good?
8:27
- And it's not hard, easy.
8:29
- Oh, it's so easy, so easy.
8:37
and try to get me a little bit of everything, the onions.
8:44
I was just down in Jacksonville
8:45
and a chef gave me a wok
8:50
and I got to pull that yok.
8:53
- [Theresa] Wok, wok talk.
8:54
- I can't talk today.
8:56
I've talked too much.
8:58
I've gotta pull his beautiful cookbook out
9:01
and that wok and go to town.
9:05
- [Theresa] Maybe after the holidays, that's what we can do.
9:08
- That's what I was thinking.
9:09
- [Theresa] We can play with the wok.
9:10
- When we don't have so much on our plate.
9:21
So, I hope y'all love this for your Christmas table.
