0:00
- I wanna share a little bit
0:02
of this letter with y'all that I got.
0:07
I know how this young woman feels.
0:11
I have felt those same feelings that she has felt
0:15
and her name is Jill Biggins and she starts off,
0:20
"well, I have probably missed this opportunity
0:22
but I wanted to share this very special recipe anyway.
0:26
My dad hand wrote this recipe for me
0:31
when I was around 18 years old
0:34
and it's always been my favorite at any celebration.
0:38
Everybody always loved it.
0:40
And you can eat the raw dough
0:41
'cause there's no eggs in this one."
0:47
She said, "one of my biggest sadnesses in life
0:50
has always been that I live so far away
0:53
from the rest of my family.
0:54
My family lives in Washington state"
0:56
and she lives in Florida.
1:02
I don't wanna make y'all sit through all of it,
1:07
but she said, "she'd make these cookies
1:10
and take and share with the class or bake sales"
1:13
and her daughter even "started making these
1:16
for her friend's birthday present
1:20
and when my daughter got married,
1:23
I asked my dad to write a copy of the recipe for her as well
1:28
and I wanted it to look just like mine,
1:30
handwritten on graphed paper and he was so happy to do so
1:35
and the picture you see of him,"
1:42
wait, maybe I have it right here.
1:47
She sent me two pictures.
1:52
There he is baking cookies with his daughter, with Jill.
2:00
So that's wonderful that you have that, Jill.
2:04
And this is another picture of her daddy.
2:09
All right, so let's go back.
2:12
"And he was happy to do so
2:13
and he was testing the recipe to make sure it was perfect
2:17
after all these years
2:19
and he and Kandi came down for the wedding,"
2:21
I guess Kandi is his partner,
2:28
"to make sure the recipe was perfect.
2:30
He and Kandi came down for the wedding
2:31
and before he gave it to her,
2:34
they had to make cookies together
2:37
and that was the last time we were able to visit in person.
2:40
My dad was one of the first
2:42
to lose his battle with COVID in 2020
2:46
but what a wonderful last memory I have.
2:50
I believe it was the following year
2:52
that I had a platter made for each of my kids
2:55
with the recipe and his picture on it.
3:00
If you ever get around to making 'em,
3:01
I hope you enjoy 'em as much as we do.
3:04
Sincerely, Jill Biggins."
3:09
Thank you so much, Jill, for sharing
3:13
something that means so much to you for the rest of us.
3:18
So this is called an easy drop chocolate cookie
3:23
and we're gonna start with a half a cup of shortening.
3:27
Now, this is butter flavored.
3:29
I just like using the butter flavored solid shortening
3:40
Let me see, do we have, do we have a formula for this?
3:47
Anyway, it's a half a cup of shortening.
3:51
Three fourths a cup of sugar,
3:53
a fourth of a cup of brown sugar
3:57
and three fourths of a cup of buttermilk.
4:00
"Now, daddy said, yuck.
4:04
If I drank it from a glass cup or a carton,
4:09
Listen, I'm the same way.
4:11
I love buttermilk ranch dressing.
4:13
I love buttermilk in my cakes
4:16
but to drink it, no way Hosanna
4:18
as Cari used to say when she was a little girl.
4:24
And one teaspoon of vanilla.
4:33
So I really don't see, let's see.
4:37
He just says "mix thoroughly."
4:41
So I'm gonna beat this up first.
4:46
And then we have our dry ingredients
4:48
that we need to gather up.
4:52
Now, on our recipe, we have chosen to use walnuts
4:57
'cause I love walnuts, y'all.
5:01
But you can certainly use pecans or almond or macadamia nut,
5:06
whatever your favorite nut is.
5:25
So we have two cups of flour, we have baking soda,
5:39
and we have walnuts and chocolate chips.
5:44
So let's see, I'm gonna make sure
5:50
I have the dry ingredients mixed together and I'm not gonna,
6:04
I'm not gonna put these in using the mixer
6:09
because I don't want it to chop up the chips and the walnuts
6:17
so I'll just stir them in after we get all this blended.
6:22
So I'm gonna fold in a cup of chocolate chips
6:27
and I think they're semisweet.
6:33
- [Theresa] No, those are actually,
6:34
yes, those are semisweet.
6:35
- Yeah, that's what I figured.
6:45
Yeah, she just says "one cup of chocolate chips"
6:48
so you could use milk chocolate,
6:50
dark chocolate, semisweet, whatever you want
6:55
and you know what's gonna make these cookies
6:58
taste so good, y'all?
6:59
I can go ahead and tell it right now.
7:01
It's that orange zest.
7:03
The orange smell smells like the ride at Disney World.
7:10
I think it's called Soaring.
7:12
And seems like your soaring trip starts down in Florida
7:18
and the air is all of a sudden just full of orange juice
7:23
and orange smell while you're soaring over Florida.
7:27
It's just what it smells like in here.
7:30
Now, they say to bake these cookies at 400 degrees,
7:34
which is that's a hot, hot oven.
7:40
I think that's what I read.
7:41
Yeah, "bake at 400 for eight to 10 minutes."
7:47
So that's a hot oven.
7:50
All right and he said "do it by a heaping teaspoonful"
8:00
All right, I'm gonna help me, help meself out a little bit.
8:05
I'm gonna spray my spoon
8:08
so hopefully the batter won't stick to.
8:13
These are all really clean.
8:14
It just had like dry ingredients in it, Theresa.
8:20
You know what I'm gonna need?
8:23
I'm gonna need two spoons.
8:36
That looks like my mama's divinity.
8:41
Yeah, I should moved him over a little closer.
9:08
Thank you, Jill, for sharing that recipe with me.
9:12
I did taste the raw dough
9:15
and it is so very good with that orange zest.
9:19
Okey-dokey, it's been such a fun day
9:23
and such a good tasting day.
9:26
And Jill, I thank you so much for sharing this recipe
9:32
with all of us out there
9:36
and I'm so glad that these cookies bring you good memories
9:42
of when you were in the kitchen with your daddy making 'em.
9:46
So thank you, girl, for sharing something
9:48
that's very special to you
9:50
and I have to tell you, I've already tasted one
9:53
and they are delicious
9:57
but I'll taste one more to just make sure.
10:01
And it is delicious.
