- Hey y'all.
0:01
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in this house
0:04
and Eddie and I was hoping to share with y'all
0:09
some of the things that we're doing to decorate our home.
0:12
This is some beautiful ribbon,
0:14
but let me tell you something, honey,
0:16
it ain't cheap, but it sure is pretty
0:20
and it's got so much body, you know,
0:22
it'll do anything you want it to do.
0:25
So I like cutting this in shorter pieces
0:29
rather than taking long streamers like at the top.
0:33
Naturally you want some long streamers from your top,
0:36
but then it's so much easier to work shorter pieces in
0:42
and tuck them in your tree
0:44
like it's all coming from the top.
0:49
You see what I mean?
0:52
Something like that.
0:53
How does that look, Eddie?
0:56
- [Eddie] Looks good. I like the woven look.
1:00
- Yes, it's very pretty.
1:06
Let me see, I might have cut that one a little longer
1:10
and I think it does work so much better
1:13
with the shorter pieces, you know,
1:16
but it really depends on how big your tree is.
1:19
And let me tell you now,
1:20
Eddie just turned over the ribbon cutting to me.
1:23
He did everything else on this tree, everything.
1:27
And I love what he did to the top.
1:31
These are just things that I've had for years.
1:34
And you see the palm frons up there, well he cut that
1:38
out of the yard y'all and spray painted it silver.
1:43
And I just love the silver in this tree.
1:50
I wish this ribbon was a little bit more platinum,
1:53
but it's not.
1:56
So our theme will be kind of silver and gold
1:59
and red this year.
2:01
And Eddie and I are gonna keep posting videos
2:04
as we work along and share with y'all.
2:08
And of course we'd love to hear
2:09
and see what y'all are doing too.
2:12
That's always a lot of fun to me.
2:16
So hope this will give you some ideas.
2:18
I've had these beads for a hundred years
2:21
and you know, that angel up there looks very vintage,
2:26
but it's not.
2:28
I bought it. When did we get that Eddie?
2:30
- [Eddie] Last year you decided.
2:32
- [Paula] Last year? Yeah.
2:33
- [Eddie] You said you wanted to do an angel.
2:33
- [Paula] I wanted to do an angel on top
2:36
and I hadn't done an angel in probably
2:38
40 or 50 years maybe.
2:43
But I think this particular angel is beautiful.
2:47
Like I said, I love the fact that she's finished.
2:49
So here we go.
2:53
Beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
2:57
Y'all, this is one of my least favorite things to do
3:01
on a tree, especially if you're only 5' 4" and a half.
3:07
But it's just so important.
3:09
But you know what, I'm gonna have to ask Eddie
3:13
to come in here and do the tippy top
3:16
because I feel so unsteady.
3:19
But what you wanna do is, the best way to do it
3:25
if you're tall enough, the best thing to do
3:30
is take the end of the ribbon and tie it
3:33
where you want it to be, just like that.
3:36
And then you weave it in and out just the way you want it.
3:40
Now I'm gonna tuck that behind the beads.
3:43
So you know, a lot of people now buy the artificial trees,
3:51
it's already pre-lit, and that is so much easier.
3:57
So much easier.
3:59
But for the living room, I just have to have the real thing.
4:02
I love the smell of that Christmas tree.
4:07
So if you have an artificial pre-lit tree,
4:12
this goes on first, you do your ribbon weaving first.
4:18
So that's my recommendation.
4:23
But like I said, I'm gonna come in here
4:26
'cause I want it like woven in.
4:34
And always use ribbon with wire.
4:37
So Eddie to the rescue.
4:43
You know, it's just terrible to, in your mind,
4:47
you think you can do things
4:48
(laughs)
4:50
and then you find out maybe you can't.
4:51
(laughs)
4:57
But you know, we just have limitations as we get older.
5:03
But see how pretty that is?
5:05
Tucked in the tree, twisting around and round.
5:10
And see, I thought I had cut a long piece
5:13
to make it further down, but I had not.
5:15
But I am gonna trim, I'm gonna trim this
5:20
and make it a little bit more,
5:24
give it a little bit more of a slant.
5:27
But y'all get it.
5:30
Y'all picking up what I'm putting down.
5:34
My first marriage, every Christmas,
5:40
my children's father and I almost got a divorce.
5:44
I would get so mad with him
5:46
because he wasn't doing the lights right.
5:48
(laughing)
5:50
Oh my goodness. What a mess. What a mess.
5:55
But that's how you do it. You got it.
5:59
Like I said, always use ribbon with wire
6:02
'cause you can squeeze it, make it do what it wants.
6:06
So I appreciate your help on that, Eddie.
6:08
I just, so frustrating to wanna do something so bad
6:12
and realize you can't.
6:15
So after I get all the ribbon on,
6:18
then I'll start putting on the ornaments.
6:22
And now what are you doing Eddie?
6:24
- I am gonna start with the Byers',
6:28
start unwrapping all them.
6:29
- Oh, okay.
6:31
You know, I've been collecting
6:33
the Byers' Christmas features.
6:38
- Forever.
6:39
- Yeah, for a long time.
6:41
And I don't know how many I have now,
6:46
but I just love them.
6:47
And I wish I had just a wall to do all of the ornaments.
6:51
I mean all of the figures on,
6:54
because they make such a statement, you know,
6:58
if they're all, but I ain't got room.
7:02
- I like though, you do them in the vignettes.
7:03
And I think the vignettes are cute too.
7:05
- Yes.
7:06
- 'Cause they tell a story.
7:07
- That is it.
7:08
- All the way around the house.
7:08
It's kind of a kind of a little treasure hunt.
7:10
- You are exactly right.
7:11
- There's some that, you know, just the colonial figures.
7:14
- Yeah.
7:15
- But there's some that are.
7:16
- Yeah, like one of my friends,
7:17
Diane Cook just sent me three men that Eddie said it was,
7:21
they were a group of the 12 days of Christmas, right?
7:24
- Right. Yeah.
7:26
- I don't know how he knows that, but he knows it.
7:28
(laughing)
7:30
He knows a lot. So we'll come back when we get through
7:35
with everything and y'all can see it, okay.
7:40
I'm here with some special friends from a few years back
7:45
and I met these guys, y'all through Mike Parish,
7:48
my friend out of Jacksonville.
7:51
What's the name of his shop over there?
7:53
- Design Elements.
7:54
- Design Elements.
7:55
- Design Elements. Yeah.
7:56
It slipped my mind for a second.
7:58
And if you're ever in Jacksonville,
7:59
you need to go by and see his shop.
8:01
It is beautiful.
8:04
So the guys were there the last time I was there
8:07
doing a book signing.
8:08
- [Eric] Yes ma'am.
8:09
- And so I was so happy to be able to reconnect with them.
8:14
I just want y'all to be aware of their business.
8:18
And it's called Get Lit Jax.
8:23
The Jax is for Jacksonville, Florida.
8:25
That's where they live and that's where they're from.
8:27
This is Eric.
8:30
- Hello.
8:31
- Matt and Greg.
8:33
And they came up to give us some lights here at the house.
8:38
And I'm so excited.
8:40
I can't wait to get everything cleaned up.
8:43
Our porches got every Christmas ornament
8:46
I've ever had in my life in boxes up there.
8:49
So guys, tell everybody what you do.
8:52
- Well, of course we have a lighting business
8:54
for Christmas, but we actually also specialize in interior.
8:59
We've been doing it for, gosh, we got what, 30 years,
9:02
35 years experience in interior and outdoor decor.
9:07
So I'm gonna have to jumble up a little bit there.
9:10
- So we can take it from lighting up your outside
9:13
of the house to making custom wreaths,
9:16
custom garland.
9:17
- [Matt] Teardrops.
9:18
- Custom teardrops, setting up your Christmas tree.
9:21
Everything is.
9:22
- Excuse me, what is a teardrop.
9:23
- A teardrop, we'll get you one so you can see actually.
9:27
- Oh, okay.
9:27
- It's a longer one instead of a round one.
9:30
- Like a light or a wreath.
9:31
- Kind of like a wreath, but it's longer.
9:33
So this would be a teardrop here.
9:35
And on the stairs, these are all teardrops.
9:39
- [Greg] Here's your stand.
9:39
- [Eric] Oh, right there.
9:40
- Here's your stand.
9:41
- Oh yes. That's gorgeous. That is gorgeous.
9:46
- Yep. These are all handmade, custom made.
9:49
- Beautiful.
9:50
- To the liking of the customer.
9:53
We chatted with the customer and figure out
9:56
what their likings, what their colors, what their style is.
9:58
- [Paula] Uh huh.
9:59
- And then we make it, you know, to what they like.
10:02
Michael at Design Elements taught us how to do this.
10:05
(laughs)
10:07
And we still use them quite a bit
10:09
to make some of these for us.
10:10
And that's who we learn from.
10:12
I've been doing it for about 17 years now.
10:15
So this is what they look like.
10:17
- [Paula] Well it's just beautiful.
10:19
- And again, it's not, it's not a pre-bought item.
10:22
It's all handmade right from scratch.
10:24
- [Paula] Right, right, all custom.
10:26
Well it is gorgeous.
10:27
I could just see that on double doors
10:30
leading into this beautiful home.
10:32
- Yes.
10:33
- The carriage lights.
10:34
- Yes, yes, yes.
10:36
- So we can go from that to lighting up your home.
10:39
We can go pure white, we can go warm white, red,
10:42
green, any color you want.
10:43
Whimsical, it's all to your liking.
10:46
So we can pretty much take it from there
10:48
and customize it to how you like it.
10:50
- [Paula] That's wonderful.
10:52
So you don't do what you want,
10:53
you do what your customer wants.
10:55
- We do what the customer wants. Correct.
10:56
- And we'll just make it elegant from there.
11:00
- Matt was telling me earlier, it's not a bad idea
11:03
to book them like in March.
11:06
- Early in the year.
11:07
- Early in the year for the Christmas.
11:10
So I was just lucky that they had a couple hours to spare
11:16
and was able to come in here.
11:18
But I am y'all's last job for the year, right?
11:20
- You are.
11:21
- You are.
11:22
- You're the last job for the year
11:23
so we finished it with a bang.
11:25
We got to come and eat with you.
11:26
(laughs)
11:27
- Great chicken.
11:28
- [Paula] Oh my gosh. Wasn't it good?
11:30
- We loved it.
11:31
- I asked them, I said, now guys,
11:34
'cause they've been here since,
11:35
what time did y'all get here?
11:37
- Around one or two.
11:38
- One or two?
11:39
I was coming back in from the school
11:41
and I said, now, but closer to suppertime,
11:45
what do y'all want? Hamburgers or pizza?
11:49
And Matt looked at me, he said,
11:51
(laughter)
11:55
I said "Well, yes it is."
11:57
So Eddie went down and picked up fried chicken,
12:00
cheese biscuits, fresh collard greens, cream corn,
12:04
and mashed potatoes and gravy and gooey butter cakes.
12:07
(laughs)
12:08
And we all sat down and ate together.
12:11
- It was amazing.
12:13
- So if you're thinking about next year
12:17
and wanna really jazz things up at your house,
12:20
give these guys a call.
12:23
- You can check us out on getlitjax.com.
12:25
- [Paula] Yes.
12:26
- Or on Facebook. Get Lit Jax.
12:28
- [Paula] Yes.
12:29
I just started at Instagram today,
12:30
so that'll get going, hopefully.
12:32
- [Paula] Oh good, good.
12:33
- So hopefully you'll be able to reach us that way.
12:35
- [Paula] You know, I love seeing people successful
12:39
that are willing to work and work hard.
12:42
- That's true.
12:43
- And I congratulate y'all.
12:45
- Thank you so much.
12:46
- We appreciate it very much.
12:48
- So I couldn't let these guys go
12:51
without them showing us some tricks with ribbons.
12:56
- So here's how we've kind of started.
12:58
We just sort of have put it in here,
13:00
but Matt says he can show us how to.
13:04
- [Matt] Let it flow through the tree.
13:05
- [Paula] Yes, yes.
13:07
- So Matt, I'm gonna dig in here
13:08
because I can see you've gone all the way
13:11
into the middle, right?
13:12
- [Matt] Correct. All the way to the back.
13:13
- [Paula] And now you're.
13:14
- We tie the wire to the end of the ribbon.
13:17
- [Paula] Yes.
13:18
- Because this is a live three and it's real soft.
13:20
So that way we can tie the actual ribbon in the back there.
13:23
So when you tug on it, it is not gonna come out.
13:25
- Oh, so there's this trick
13:27
and the trick of the trade is you actually have to.
13:29
- Yeah,
13:31
- Okay. Trick number one.
13:33
- Keeps it, holds it in place,
13:35
- And then you just make a big loop
13:36
and do kind of the same thing in the back.
13:38
- [Eric] Yeah. We're just gonna kind of flow
13:39
and then find our way
13:40
underneath the tendrils in the branches here.
13:43
Try to find a little path to follow.
13:52
- And you use a lot of ribbon.
13:53
That's a lot of ribbon going down.
13:55
- Oh, yes ma'am.
13:56
We usually use about four rolls a tree on a typical tree.
14:00
- It's funny, this year we, I thought I would, you know,
14:04
I was walking through stores looking
14:06
at a bunch of greenery, fake greenery.
14:10
And I thought, you know what, I wonder,
14:11
when I was in college,
14:14
I had to do a fashion illustration course,
14:20
you know, just as an elective.
14:22
- Oh wow.
14:22
- So, you know,
14:23
I thought let's just try spray painting what I saw.
14:27
- Oh gosh. I'm thinking we're just pulling out things
14:29
that already existed.
14:30
But this is.
14:31
- No, no, I have been cutting limbs out of the yard
14:36
and I spray painted them.
14:38
- And so where are you looking to hang these?
14:39
So we're gonna incorporate,
14:42
so we did the Paula Dean Green front door color.
14:47
We'll use this on, you know, around some of the garland
14:50
out by the front door and I even found some ivy
14:59
out on the yard and we'll incorporate that
15:01
into some of the garland.
15:05
Just spray painted gold.
15:08
- Isn't that beautiful?
15:09
- Just spray paint.
15:10
- [Paula] Isn't that beautiful?
15:12
And look, the palm leaves, you painted them the color
15:16
of our front door, which I was surprised
15:20
to see that actually.
15:22
Oh my gosh. Look at those. Look at those.
15:25
- These will probably will probably cut
15:27
and trim up a little bit.
15:28
Make it more fan shaped to get
15:31
into some of the containers.
15:33
- Oh.
15:34
- What's in here?
15:36
- I don't know. Let's see.
15:38
- Here's the trash.
15:41
- Who wants a Santa Claus hat?
15:43
- Yeah.
15:44
- Oh, okay.
15:46
(kids chattering)
15:48
- What's inside here?
15:50
- -(indistinct)
16:00
Oh Linden, I love it.
16:02
Look in the mirror. Do you wanna put this on?
16:07
- Yeah.
16:08
Okay. It matches your hat. There you go.
16:11
- I'm gonna be a witch.
16:13
- You're gonna be a witch. Look at that scary witch.
16:17
- [Theresa] Millie, can I see you in your witch's hat?
16:19
Ooh, you're scary.
16:25
- I can't find the hook, Theresa.
16:28
- [Theresa] Well why don't you hold it closed
16:29
and look up at me.
16:30
- Okay, just hold it closed baby.
16:33
- [Theresa] Ollie, look at me.
16:34
- [Paula] Look at Theresa.
16:35
- [Theresa] Ooh.
16:36
- [Paula] You're beautiful.
16:38
(laughs)
16:40
- Your Guinea's little Santa angel.
16:43
You know, I kinda like over the top things, you know,
16:46
so I like that one.
16:48
That one doesn't make a big enough statement, I don't think.
16:51
But that one's just a scad too tall.
16:53
- What do you think? I'm gonna go in and just.
16:55
What so you think? Yeah,
16:57
- I think as far as the mantle, the sizes.
16:58
- Well the one on the yeah, definitely
17:00
because of the height of the ceiling.
17:02
The one on the left is what I mean.
17:04
Either way we'll add more to it.
17:07
But the one on the left,
17:09
I think I would trim a little bit of the gold.
17:11
- Yeah.
17:12
- Off of the top.
17:14
- The silver and the gold is so beautiful.
17:18
- So what you doing Eddie?
17:20
- Well, we finally are getting out the Byers.
17:25
And this.
17:26
- What are Byers?
17:27
Can you like tell people what Byers are?
17:30
- You know what?
17:31
- I mean they're kind of like a Christmas village,
17:33
like people that do the houses.
17:34
- They do them for or all seasons.
17:35
But I think they're, you know, known
17:38
for their colonial Williamsburg figures.
17:44
- And they're figurines.
17:45
They aren't actually houses.
17:47
They're like vignettes. This one is the Nutcracker.
17:50
- This is the Nutcracker Suite.
17:51
- They're not ceramic.
17:53
- Well their faces are like a clay.
17:56
Yeah. But the rest of the body
17:57
- Like mud (indistinct), Eddie.
17:59
- Yeah. Yeah. And you can, the faces, you can see a video.
18:03
The original one, like when you look at some vintage ones,
18:06
like from the '70s, their faces are a little larger
18:14
and you can see the detail.
18:16
- Right.
18:19
- But this, Paula got last year.
18:23
- What is the oldest one you think we have.
18:26
- You know, I think we have one from like maybe around 1980.
18:36
- But we'll have several vignettes
18:38
that when we show you our final video
18:40
of the house completely decorated, this is only part one.
18:43
You'll get to see all of the different vignettes.
18:47
- What do you think?
18:49
- Look, ranger.
18:52
- A what?
18:56
What kind of ranger?
18:57
- I don't know.
18:58
(laughs)
19:00
- I don't know either, Baby.
19:04
- Who's this Linton?
19:07
- Santa Claus?
19:08
- Is that Santa Claus? Is Santa Claus coming to see you?
19:12
- These three. Let me tell you about this.
19:16
I got a package the other day and I opened it
19:19
and I said, oh, it's from my friend Diane Cook.
19:22
She's so thoughtful.
19:24
- So she found these 12 days of Christmas
19:27
that I did not have.
19:30
And Diane, thank you so much. You're so sweet.
19:38
I would rather you spend your money on you,
19:41
but you're a wonderful friend
19:44
and I appreciate everything that you've ever gifted me with,
19:47
especially these.
19:50
So y'all, this kinda finishes up our tree, our two trees.
20:00
And I have gotten so many grandchildren now
20:05
that these would get lost on the tree.
20:11
You know, it would take us forever
20:14
for all the children to find their picture.
20:17
So last year Eddie and I pulled out this little tree,
20:21
this metal tree was the one I set up
20:24
in the nursery at River Bend.
20:28
And I put gum drops on every peg ,along with some bows.
20:34
And it turned out so cute.
20:36
But we decided, well it'll be so much easier for them
20:40
to walk up and find their picture on this tree
20:43
rather than mixed up with all the other ornaments.
20:50
The only thing is it doesn't have
20:51
a whole bunch of limbs, y'all.
20:59
So I've got the bow on the front side,
21:03
but I've got to make it for the backside too.
21:06
But then that's all.
21:08
And look at these precious little things.
21:12
How precious are those babies?
21:13
- Don't forget, they get to see the full.
21:16
- Oh yes.
21:17
- Piece in a couple of days.
21:18
So we're just trying to tease 'em right now.
21:20
- Yeah. Yeah.
21:21
We just want y'all to stay tuned
21:23
because we are gonna show y'all
21:25
everything that we have done.
21:28
And you know what? I don't think we are
21:29
doing as much this year.
21:32
I don't know, maybe it's 'cause I was
21:34
a little under the weather
21:36
for a couple of weeks in November.
21:38
I don't know.
21:39
But I can't wait to show y'all everything.
21:43
Eddie did the mantle and it is beautiful.
21:47
It's beautiful.
21:52
Hey, y'all, it's Paula Deen.
