- Hey y'all, I'm Paula Deen,
0:02
and it's such a beautiful day today
0:05
that I'm gonna be taking my kitchen outside.
0:08
I'm gonna be fixing us a garden party
0:11
right here in this beautiful garden
0:13
at the Isaiah Davenport House
0:15
in downtown Savannah.
0:16
We're gonna be starting out
0:18
with an out of this world spinach and bacon quiche.
0:21
And then we're gonna be fixing a cocktail,
0:24
a crab cocktail that is!
0:27
Next up is a chocolate delight that's gonna
0:29
knock your socks off.
0:31
And don't forget the drinks, because we're gonna
0:33
be washing everything down with a yummy fruit punch
0:37
that's sure to wet your whistle.
0:39
In the garden or not, it's gonna be quite a party.
0:43
On today's show, I'm bringing everybody
0:46
to the Isaiah Davenport house here in Savannah.
0:49
It is the first home that got restored here in our city
0:53
and it was done by a group of seven ladies
0:56
that later became known as the Historical Society.
1:00
A lot of functions are held at this beautiful home.
1:02
A lot of wedding receptions and bridal showers are held here
1:06
and that inspired me for today's menu.
1:08
So I'm gonna be cooking right over there in the garden.
1:11
And while I'm doing that,
1:12
y'all gonna tour of this beautiful house
1:15
and we'll meet back up in the garden.
1:17
I'll see y'all in a few minutes.
1:19
The Davenport House is just a standout gem,
1:23
even in a city like Savannah,
1:25
where it's just full of beautiful mansions.
1:28
The house today looks exactly as it did back in 1820,
1:32
when the Davenport family first built the home.
1:34
In fact, the seven women who founded the Historic Foundation
1:39
discovered many of the original items still in the home.
1:42
And they were able to recreate the family furnishings
1:45
and decor right on down to the wallpaper.
1:49
But for all its beauty, y'all, I think my favorite place
1:52
is definitely the garden.
1:54
There's just no finer setting
1:56
for making a garden party menu.
1:59
Isn't it beautiful?
2:00
It's hard to believe that just in 1955,
2:04
that this house was due to be torn down.
2:07
And these seven Savannah ladies just did the town
2:10
a wonderful service by saving this beautiful home.
2:14
And I don't know if you've had a chance
2:16
to really notice the furniture,
2:17
but you notice they didn't have a whole lot of furniture.
2:20
But even though it's sparse, it's still so beautiful.
2:23
And the wallpaper, the wallpapers were put back
2:26
just like the original wallpapers.
2:28
But anyway, I hope y'all will get
2:30
to see some more shots of it.
2:31
But in the meantime, we gotta cook.
2:34
So I'm gonna do a quiche for today.
2:36
And it's just real, real simple.
2:38
I'm starting out with a frozen pie crust,
2:42
and we're gonna start by cracking six eggs.
2:46
And these eggs are at room temperature
2:50
because they just appear to get fluffier.
2:52
This garden that I'm standing in
2:57
has held so many parties.
2:59
Y'all know, Savannah is a very romantic and magical place.
3:04
And a lot of people choose to come to Savannah
3:07
and get married here
3:08
and they don't have family or anything here.
3:12
They just purposely choose this location
3:15
because of all the romance going on.
3:18
I'm gonna beat them up a little bit
3:20
and then our liquid is going in here is heavy cream.
3:25
No half and half today for this quiche,
3:28
but the heavy, heavy cream.
3:37
All right, now I'm gonna take our pie crust
3:40
and I'm gonna line the bottom of it
3:43
with some pre-cooked crispy bacon.
3:47
Just gonna cover the bottom of that.
3:49
Now I'm gonna take some fresh spinach
3:51
that I've just wilted.
3:54
And I'm gonna cover the bottom with that.
3:57
I love spinach and eggs together.
4:00
Now I'm gonna top it with cheese.
4:02
And you can use any kind of cheese that you like.
4:05
I happen to be using a Swiss cheese.
4:08
Now I'm gonna add a little salt
4:13
and a little pepper to the eggs.
4:15
(pepper cracks)
4:18
All right, and I'm just gonna pour this
4:19
over our cheese and our spinach and our bacon.
4:23
The great thing about quiche
4:25
is you can really do anything that you wanna do.
4:30
You know, if you like sausage, you could do sausage.
4:32
Or if you liked ham, you could do ham.
4:36
But everybody I know loves bacon.
4:39
And I think that that will, that will do that.
4:44
It may run over a little bit.
4:45
And look at this great little oven.
4:47
Since I'm in the garden, naturally,
4:49
I don't have a stove out here,
4:50
but that's no problem because I've got a little oven.
4:55
Can y'all hear the church bells ringing?
4:57
(bells ring) Can you hear them?
5:00
And I hear some children playing right over the fence.
5:05
All right, so while the quiche is cooking
5:07
or while our quicky's cooking,
5:09
I'm gonna make up a simple syrup
5:11
because when we come back from break,
5:13
I'm gonna be making a nice punch.
5:15
Because no bridal party is complete without punch.
5:19
And to make my simple syrup,
5:21
I'm gonna use equal parts of sugar to water,
5:24
and we're gonna let this boil and make a syrup
5:28
and we're gonna let it cool down
5:29
and then we're gonna add it to our punch.
5:35
I've gonna have to take a quick break.
5:37
But when we come back, we're gonna finish the punch
5:39
and I'm gonna be making us crab martinis,
5:43
which is really, really good.
5:45
And we're gonna taste those quiche.
5:47
So y'all don't leave me.
5:48
I've got lots, lots more to show y'all
5:50
in this beautiful house.
5:55
I so hope y'all are enjoying the show.
5:57
And if you do.
5:59
Be sure to click like, subscribe and
6:02
notification bell so you'll never miss a video.
6:06
And we'll be right back after the break.
6:12
Welcome back, y'all, and I think our quiche is ready.
6:15
Oh, it smells delicious.
6:18
I'm gonna sit the quiche up here
6:19
and let it cool for a few minutes.
6:21
And then we're gonna come back
6:22
and cut and taste that and it looks scrumptious.
6:25
Now the next thing I wanna show y'all
6:28
is called a crab martini.
6:30
Now I'm starting with just lump crab meat
6:33
and it's been picked free of its shell and it's so good.
6:38
Now the first thing I'm gonna do is zest two lemons.
6:43
This lemon is really gonna bring out
6:46
the flavor of that crab.
6:49
(grater thuds)
6:51
Okay.
6:54
We're just gonna gather that up
6:57
and that probably made about a tablespoon.
7:00
So that's pretty good.
7:01
All right, so I'm gonna soften our lemons up now
7:03
and I'm gonna squeeze that lemon juice over our crab.
7:17
That lemon juice just, ooh, it's so good with that crab.
7:23
All right, so I've got our lemon juice in there.
7:26
I've got our zest and I'm gonna sprinkle it
7:30
with a little seasoning salt.
7:33
And I'm gonna toss just a little bit of mayonnaise
7:35
in here to bind this.
7:37
Do wanna keep your flavors very, very simple,
7:41
because you just wanna enhance the fresh crab
7:44
because the crab is so good and sweet
7:47
and you want that flavor to be the headliner of this dish.
7:51
And 'cause it's called a crab martini,
7:54
I'm gonna be serving in a martini glass.
7:57
And I'm gonna come over here and cut us a piece of lemon.
8:03
And I'm just gonna rim that glass with some lemon juice.
8:10
And then I'm gonna put some seasoning salt in my bowl.
8:16
And then I'm just gonna run that martini glass
8:20
around in that bowl.
8:21
So when I'm eatin' my crab,
8:23
I can just accidentally let my fork brush
8:26
against the rim of that glass and get
8:29
that good ol' salt out of it.
8:32
I'm gonna take some asparagus
8:36
and just cut some of these tender ends off.
8:43
Just like that.
8:45
And I'm gonna toss them over into my crab.
8:51
And that'll give us a pretty little bit of green color.
8:55
All right, so let's bring our glass back.
8:58
I'm gonna come in here with our chard.
9:06
And then I'm gonna tuck some crab in it, just a little bit.
9:12
And then I'm gonna come in here with some asparagus.
9:18
And no martini is complete without an olive.
9:22
And just in case somebody wants a little bit more lemon.
9:27
Look how beautiful that is.
9:30
And it's not like you're having to balance a plate
9:32
on your lap.
9:33
And it's magnificently simple, beautiful, and tasty.
9:40
And I, you know, I don't have the heart
9:41
to eat out of that dish, it's so pretty,
9:43
but I think I am gonna come in here
9:45
and just make sure it's just like it should be.
9:52
Mmm.
9:54
It's just yummy.
9:56
Our quiche is cooling down,
9:58
so I really wanna put this punch together
9:59
before that gets totally cold on me.
10:02
In my pitcher, I put a large can
10:04
of pineapple juice and to that,
10:06
we're gonna add frozen lemonade,
10:11
a frozen concentrated orange juice,
10:15
and remember that simple syrup than I was making?
10:18
Well I have it right here and it's chilled now.
10:21
And I'm just gonna pour that in with our juices.
10:25
And this is really, really gonna sweeten up.
10:31
Now I have a bowl of fresh strawberries
10:34
and I'm using a little stainless steel bowl
10:38
as my mold today.
10:40
And all I've done is pull the green stems
10:43
off of the strawberries.
10:46
And I'm gonna cover our berries with our punch.
10:50
And then I'm gonna stick this in the freezer
10:53
because this is gonna be our ice mold
10:55
that's gonna keep our punch nice and chilled for us.
11:00
In fact, I have one that's been in the freezer.
11:03
And normally you would just dip this in a little hot water
11:06
and lift it out and it would come out of the bowl,
11:08
but we don't have hot running water out here
11:11
in the garden at the Davenport House,
11:13
so I'm gonna just try to gently persuade this to come out.
11:18
There it is!
11:20
See how pretty that is?
11:22
So I'm gonna take a
11:26
Sprite, Seven Up, ginger ale,
11:28
whatever your favorite clear drink is.
11:33
Now we're just gonna take this
11:34
and we're gonna pour it over our berries.
11:39
Aren't those berries just beautiful,
11:41
the way they are in a great big clump?
11:44
All right, now I think I'm gonna stick
11:48
just a few lemon rings in there.
11:52
Now you could do orange rings or lime rings,
11:56
anything you wanted to,
11:57
or you didn't have to do a thing at all,
11:59
but I think that's how I'm gonna dress mine.
12:02
And I'm just gonna throw some fresh mint in there.
12:09
Oh great time of day, it looks so good.
12:14
I wish one of those berries would come loose.
12:17
Ooh, look how good that looks.
12:24
Right, now, I wanna come over here
12:25
and I wanna cut us a piece of quiche.
12:31
Ooh, yum.
12:32
All the bacon rose to the top.
12:35
You know, why do girls like quiche so much?
12:37
I don't, I don't know why we do,
12:40
but I know you've heard of that joke.
12:42
Real men don't eat quiche.
12:44
I don't know why men think that
12:47
it's just not a dish meant for them,
12:49
but I know Michael loves 'em.
12:52
So I've got my crab salad ready and I've got my punch
12:56
and this beautiful quiche.
13:00
Ooh, so everything looks so good.
13:02
I got to leave and clean up.
13:04
And when we come back,
13:05
I'm gonna be making a chocolate delight.
13:09
But in the meantime, before I clean up,
13:10
I'm gonna taste all this stuff.
13:13
(hums)
13:15
Oh my God, it's so good.
13:20
I hope y'all are enjoying the show
13:23
and I want to hear from you.
13:24
Tell me what recipes or videos you'd like to see me
13:27
make by just leaving a short comment below.
13:31
Now, let's get back to the show, y'all.
13:37
You know, it just wouldn't be a garden party
13:40
for us girls without something chocolate.
13:43
So I'm gonna be making a very, very easy chocolate delight.
13:47
I'm gonna start with a devil's food cake.
13:50
And, I have to tell you, it's just a box cake mix,
13:54
nothing fancy, smancy about it.
13:56
Now, all I'm gonna do is cut our cake
14:01
into bite size squares,
14:05
just like this.
14:12
And this doesn't have to be cut perfect,
14:17
because it's gonna get all mixed in
14:19
with all our other ingredients.
14:21
So we're just gonna take our devil's food cake
14:25
and put us a layer
14:27
in the bottom of our trifle dish,
14:30
just like that.
14:32
And I'm gonna come over here
14:34
and I'm gonna nestle us down
14:36
a couple of cubes of cake in that.
14:39
And now we're gonna take a chocolate pudding.
14:42
Now, your chocolate pudding, it really doesn't matter.
14:45
You can use an instant pudding
14:47
or you can make one from scratch.
14:49
So whatever you feel comfortable with
14:53
on your pudding is quite all right.
14:56
But I'll have to tell you this,
14:57
the cooked pudding that you can buy in the box
15:00
is very, very good.
15:04
All right, now, I'm gonna come over here
15:05
and give it a layer of pudding.
15:10
The reason that I like to do it
15:12
in the individual glasses, when I'm having this type
15:14
of party that I want it kinda clean and not a lot of mess,
15:18
the girls can just walk up and get their glass.
15:20
There's no dippin' and worrying about getting it
15:23
on their clothes and making it ugly.
15:25
I can make sure that everybody's serving
15:28
is nice and pretty and clean.
15:30
Where if you dip, you don't always have that guarantee.
15:33
Now I'm gonna step over here.
15:34
I've started beating some whipping cream
15:37
and this is just fresh, heavy cream.
15:39
And I'm gonna add a little powdered sugar to it.
15:45
(mixer whirs)
15:55
All right.
15:57
Now we're gonna take our whipped cream
16:03
and we're gonna just put a layer of that
16:06
over that cake and that chocolate pudding.
16:10
Looks delicious.
16:11
And then I'm gonna come over here
16:13
and I'm gonna do the same thing
16:14
in our little individual serving.
16:20
All right, now I'm gonna drizzle it
16:24
with a little chocolate syrup.
16:27
Just gonna drizzle that around.
16:31
Yum, I love this chocolate syrup.
16:35
I love it over 'nilla ice cream.
16:39
Now I've got some toasted pecans
16:42
that I'm gonna just sprinkle around on there.
16:47
And then we're gonna do it one more time
16:51
with the chocolate cake.
16:55
Just tuck it in there, like that.
16:59
Gonna tuck this in here.
17:05
And another tuck.
17:08
And then we're gonna come back in here
17:11
with that chocolate pudding.
17:13
(laughs)
17:18
Mmm, gonna do the same thing over here.
17:28
All right and then we're gonna go back
17:29
with our whipped cream.
17:34
And you can see the pretty white layer down there
17:37
that our whipped cream has made.
17:39
All right.
17:44
(hums)
17:50
And some more toasted pecans.
17:54
And then I think I'm gonna finish this off
17:57
with just a few cherries.
18:05
And do the same thing
18:11
with our glass.
18:16
How good does that look?
18:19
And I think.
18:21
I think it worked out well that I made an individual glass
18:24
don't y'all?
18:26
That'll give me something to eat out of.
18:29
And when we come back,
18:31
I'm gonna be making table centerpieces.
18:41
I so hope y'all are enjoying the show.
18:43
And if you do.
18:45
Be sure to click like, subscribe and
18:48
notification bell so you'll never miss a video.
18:52
And we'll be right back after the break.
18:58
For today's tip, I've got the neatest little thing
19:01
in the whole world.
19:03
It's a fruit tree form.
19:05
Now you can see right here, I've got some lemon trees.
19:08
I've got some orange trees and some lime trees
19:12
and we filled them in with pittosporum
19:14
or you can use box wood.
19:16
And we've tucked some grapes in these,
19:18
so they make just beautiful centerpieces.
19:21
And these things work so easily.
19:24
All you have to do is select the fruit that you wanna use,
19:27
and you just stick them onto the nails,
19:33
just like this.
19:36
You can put these together just in a matter of minutes.
19:41
And like I said, this pittosporum
19:44
looks just beautiful tucked in there.
19:47
And that fills in all of your spaces.
19:50
And the pineapple you just sit on top, give it a push,
19:55
and it's attached into those nails.
19:58
So I'm gonna take this beautiful arrangement
20:00
and I'm gonna sit it next to the bowl of punch
20:02
and it's gonna be spectacular.
20:07
I really hope that y'all like what I've done today.
20:10
This is just a perfect menu for a girlies' garden party.
20:14
The chocolate delight and the bacon
20:17
and spinach quiche is so yummy.
20:20
And the crab salad is just perfect for the young girls
20:25
that wanna maintain that girlish figure.
20:27
And before we leave today, I'd like
20:29
to just give a special thanks
20:31
to all the wonderful people here
20:33
at the Davenport House that opened up their arms
20:35
to you and to me.
20:37
And until next time, I send y'all love and best dishes
20:42
from one of our national treasures to yours.
