(upbeat music)
0:01
- Hey, y'all, I'm Paula Deen,
0:02
and I've got the adventure of a lifetime
0:05
to share with you.
0:07
(Paula screaming)
0:08
You know, it's been 18 years since our last family trip,
0:11
and we're fixin' to change that
0:13
on the magical island of St. Lucia.
0:17
- You're hungry, ain't ya?
0:19
- Y'all just won't believe the fun, the views,
0:22
and especially,
0:23
especially the flavors we found in this Caribbean paradise.
0:27
All I need is a straw. (laughs)
0:31
(upbeat music)
0:32
Come on, y'all.
0:33
It's "The Deen Family Vacation",
0:35
and we're headin' to St. Lucia
0:38
for some Caribbean sun, food, and adventure.
0:42
Don't miss out.
0:45
(plane whirring)
0:47
(upbeat music)
0:47
We took a four and a half hour flight from Atlanta
0:50
and arrived in paradise.
0:53
St. Lucia's just 27 miles long and 14 miles wide
0:58
and gorgeous from one end to the other.
1:02
(upbeat music)
1:05
- We've spent every waking moment for 18 years
1:09
workin' as hard as we can to build our business,
1:10
and we never take any time
1:12
to kinda celebrate together as a family.
1:15
- It was Brooke, my daughter-in-Law, Jack, my grandson,
1:19
Jamie, Bobby, and Michael's daughter Michelle.
1:24
- It's lush and green, and it's a little underdeveloped.
1:27
And that's what we wanted, was to feel like
1:28
we were really, really away.
1:32
- St. Lucia is one of the most beautiful spots
1:34
I've ever been.
1:35
My wife and I honeymooned there.
1:36
My brother's been there.
1:38
You've got mountains, you've got beautiful reefs
1:40
and great food, somethin' for everybody.
1:43
(upbeat music)
1:45
- [Paula] Oh gosh, and we had the best driver,
1:47
and he knew the island like the back of his hand.
1:51
- The island changed hands 14 times,
1:54
seven times French,
1:57
seven times British.
1:59
As a result of this, we speak Creole,
2:03
which is our dialect.
2:05
It's broken French.
2:06
So if you wanna call your husband darling, you say doudou.
2:10
- That'll work out just perfect.
2:12
That's normally what I call him.
2:14
- How you doin', doudou?
2:14
(all laughing)
2:17
- I think it was one of the prettiest places
2:18
I've ever been to.
2:19
One side was emerald green,
2:22
the other side was crystal blue,
2:24
and the mountains were just marvelous.
2:27
- Soufriere means sulfur.
2:29
This is the volcano.
2:30
Right now where we are,
2:32
we are in the crater.
2:33
It's about seven miles wide.
2:35
- Wow. - Really?
2:36
- [Driver] Now, these mountains here are the pitons,
2:38
pitons meaning spikes.
2:40
They're the landmarks of St. Lucia.
2:43
- Oh, and look at my little Jack.
2:45
It's our first vacation together.
2:47
Our first family vacation.
2:50
- [Jamie] He says he's hungry.
2:51
- So what's wrong with that?
2:52
Jack wasn't the only one, y'all.
2:54
So I ask our driver, Ben,
2:56
where he'd grab a snack.
2:58
Well, sure enough, he took us to a beautiful spot
3:02
with a delicious local delicacy, cassava bread.
3:06
We met the owner.
3:08
Her name was Miss Joan.
3:10
- Hello.
3:11
- How are you, dear?
3:12
- I'm okay, and you?
3:13
- Is your bread as good as my biscuits?
3:15
- I think so,
3:16
just like yours. - You think so?
3:18
(all laugh)
3:19
We all learned that cassava is a root.
3:23
She and her family grew it right outside the bakery.
3:27
Miss Joan compared this cassava to what we think of
3:32
as a yam or a sweet potato here in our country.
3:35
- It's good for everybody.
3:36
- Is it fattenin'?
3:38
- It's more better than the white bread we eat.
3:42
- [Bobby] It's not heavy?
3:42
- No.
3:43
- [Bobby] Is it fattening?
3:44
- It's good.
3:45
But it has no butter, no egg.
3:48
- Say what? - No baking powder,
3:49
no yeast, just dough.
3:50
- No butter? - No.
3:52
- It's quite a process to make this bread.
3:55
She peels it.
3:56
It's got to be ground down almost like pulverized.
4:00
Then she's got a great big kettle over a fire.
4:04
You constantly stir it
4:06
because you've got to dry out this cassava.
4:09
- Come on, you should try it.
4:12
- It looks too much like moppin',
4:13
and I don't like to mop.
4:15
(all laugh)
4:17
By the time you wind up with a product
4:19
to make the cassava bread, it's almost like a cross
4:23
between our cornmeal and flour.
4:27
Once dried, she adds nutmeg, cinnamon, and fresh coconut.
4:34
Look at this, y'all.
4:35
Look at that beautiful fresh coconut.
4:37
We added sugar, candied cherries from a local market,
4:41
raisins, and a wonderful surprise.
4:44
- That is cherry essence.
4:46
- Cherry essence.
4:49
- And you just put it in the cassava.
4:51
- It smells like
4:53
out of this world. - Very nice.
4:55
When we finish-
4:56
- That smell is unbelievable, y'all.
4:59
It smells like a cherry sundae.
5:02
- Like this. - Fabulous.
5:03
We made balls of the mixture and then flattened,
5:06
and we shaped them on a banana leaf.
5:10
Oh, okay.
5:13
I'm not as good at spinnin' as you are.
5:15
- You is good.
5:16
You're good.
5:17
- Look how beautiful.
5:19
- Ah, now you can do them. (laughs)
5:21
- After she would get the batter, pat it out,
5:24
she would set it over a very even fire.
5:28
It would just dry out and cook.
5:31
And don't forget the butter.
5:33
- No, no butter. (laughs)
5:36
- Michael, I've got some butter out there in the cooler.
5:39
- No butter.
5:41
- [Michael] I'll go get it.
5:42
- You can't imagine being able to make a bread
5:44
in as many flavors as Miss Joan had done.
5:47
There was everything from sweet to savory.
5:51
- [Michelle] I don't think it needs better.
5:52
- It's like a Fig Newton.
5:54
- There was a saltfish.
5:55
- Tuna. - Banana.
5:56
- Cherry. - Plain.
5:57
- And chocolate.
5:58
Did you try the tuna?
6:00
- [Michael] I love the tuna.
6:01
- The family went nuts over the tuna.
6:04
Tuna fish.
6:06
- [Miss Joan] That's the local fish.
6:07
- Couldn't believe how much flavor these things had.
6:10
I could eat that for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
6:12
- That's a flavor that I've never had before,
6:14
and all the spices,
6:15
and it just tasted like the the Caribbean.
6:18
- Mm!
6:19
Miss Joan,
6:21
hug me, honey!
6:24
Thank you so much.
6:25
- Yes, I appreciate it.
6:26
- It was wonderful.
6:28
Later on, y'all, we're headin' to the rainforest
6:30
for some out-of-this-world adventure.
6:33
I hate y'all!
6:34
(both laughing)
6:35
But up next, come with me to taste the best sweet
6:39
and savory treats of St. Lucia.
6:42
You sure you ain't from Georgia, girl?
6:44
- No, I'm from St. Lucia. (laughs)
6:47
I so hope y'all are enjoying the show.
6:50
And if you do.
6:52
Be sure to click like, subscribe and
6:55
notification bell so you'll never miss a video.
6:59
And we'll be right back after the break.
7:04
(easy-going music)
7:08
- On St. Lucia, y'all, there's somethin' new
7:10
and wonderful to find around every corner.
7:14
I was really, really interested
7:17
in findin' the foods of St. Lucia
7:19
and the things that grow there.
7:21
So the thing I wanted to do was find out
7:24
about the cocoa plantations.
7:26
(easy-going music)
7:28
There was a nice lady there named Cornelia that took us
7:31
through the steps of the cocoa beans.
7:34
- And right here, this is the cocoa pod.
7:35
I'm going to crack it open so you can see
7:37
what the beans look like inside
7:39
and tell you what we make with our cocoa beans
7:40
on this plantation.
7:44
Then I'm gonna open it.
7:48
(Paula screams)
7:49
This is what you get inside.
7:50
- It's like a martian.
7:51
- [Cornelia] White and slimy beans or jungle M&Ms.
7:57
- [Bobby] Gross.
7:58
- You can grab one, suck over it.
7:59
But when you suck in, please,
8:00
you cannot bite into the bean or swallow
8:03
because the inside is bitter.
8:05
- [Paula] Mm!
8:06
- [Michelle] It's almost like a fruity taste.
8:07
- [Cornelia] Yeah.
8:08
- [Michelle] It doesn't taste like chocolate at all.
8:09
It's good.
8:09
- [Cornelia] And after you're done, you throw it out.
8:12
- It reminded me of the way a melon would taste,
8:13
and it was gooey like a marshmallow.
8:16
- [Michael] Oh, yeah, it's good.
8:17
- Chocolate in its raw form was not very appealing looking
8:20
in the pod, but I tasted it,
8:23
and it's really a nice fruit.
8:24
So I was thinkin', oh, yeah, I can see
8:26
how this is gonna be great.
8:28
Looks like the inside of a chicken, but it tastes good.
8:30
(all laugh)
8:33
- How did they know to take this slimy bean
8:38
and make chocolate from it or cocoa?
8:41
There must've been some smart folks is all I got to say.
8:44
The cocoa beans dry on big trays that slide in if it rains
8:49
and out when the St. Lucian sun is shinin'.
8:52
When they sell the beans whole,
8:54
traditionally they polish 'em
8:56
to make 'em look real pretty.
8:58
They don't polish these beans with their hands, y'all.
9:02
They do the cocoa dance.
9:04
(beans swooshing)
9:05
- Wow, that's cool.
9:07
- Look at that!
9:09
(beans swooshing)
9:11
And don't worry, the beans get cleaned
9:13
before hittin' the shelves.
9:15
I wanna do that.
9:17
- [Cornelia] You wanna do it?
9:18
- [Paula] I do wanna do it.
9:19
- [Cornelia] Maybe soon.
9:19
- You think I could do it without gettin' messed up?
9:22
- I think so.
9:22
- Bobby, why don't you?
9:24
- No, I'd like to see you do it.
9:27
- Yeah.
9:28
- I so wanna do that.
9:29
- I'm not surprised one bit when I looked up
9:31
and my mom was dancin' on cocoa beans.
9:34
That's typical mom.
9:35
She wants to do everything.
9:36
She's lucky she didn't break her neck.
9:38
It was pretty slippery in there.
9:40
- Oh, God!
9:42
I'm gonna fall!
9:44
How do you...
9:46
- Be careful.
9:48
- [Worker] Got it?
9:49
- All right, here we go. - Hold on, yeah.
9:51
- Here we go.
9:52
- [Cornelia] Whoa, whoa.
9:54
Whoa!
9:55
- All right, I'm hoping I could do it the other way.
9:58
(all laughing)
10:01
- I'll never eat another piece
10:02
of chocolate without thinkin' about Mama's feet in it.
10:05
- More commonly, they sell the roasted mashed up beans
10:08
in a paste form.
10:10
They make what we call a cocoa stick,
10:12
and it's 100% pure unsweetened cocoa.
10:16
- You wanna try it?
10:17
It's bitter.
10:18
- Sure. - Yeah.
10:20
(instrumental music)
10:24
Anybody else?
10:26
- [Paula] Why'd you do that, son?
10:28
- She told me to.
10:29
- She said just taste.
10:31
She didn't say eat a spoonful.
10:33
(all laugh)
10:34
- It was like eatin' a mouthful of coffee beans,
10:38
wasn't my favorite thing.
10:40
- [Michael] Was it good, Bobby?
10:42
(all laughing)
10:46
- St. Lucia really is a food lover's paradise, y'all.
10:49
If you're not touring cocoa plantations,
10:52
then you're passin' by lush banana fields.
10:56
We made our way back to the hotel,
10:58
and I took the opportunity to visit a woman
11:01
our driver had told me about.
11:03
She was down on the beach cookin' up some barbecue chicken,
11:06
and he said I really, really shouldn't miss it.
11:09
Do I smell something cookin'?
11:12
- Yes, you're smelling something good.
11:13
- What are you cookin'?
11:15
- Barbecue chicken.
11:17
- Ooh!
11:18
You know there ain't never been a chicken
11:20
that got away from ol' Paula. (laughs)
11:22
Oh my gracious.
11:25
She didn't have a lot of fancy equipment.
11:27
She had a regular, just charcoal grill set up on the beach.
11:31
(instrumental music)
11:33
Oh, what service, Marjorie!
11:36
Ah!
11:38
Oh
11:39
my
11:40
goodness.
11:42
Now, what is that you've put on that chicken?
11:44
- Barbecue sauce
11:45
with mixed vegetables.
11:47
- Uh-huh.
11:50
- With rice,
11:51
a plantain, fried, and salad, and lentil peas.
11:56
- Mm!
11:57
And it's still hot.
11:58
What a surprise.
11:59
The chicken was delicious.
12:00
It was kind of a sweet and hot.
12:03
(upbeat music)
12:05
You sure you ain't from Georgia, girl?
12:07
- No, I'm from St. Lucia. (laughs)
12:10
- Sittin' down on that picnic table on the beach
12:13
was rather intoxicating, I have to say.
12:18
And while I was sittin' there enjoying my meal,
12:20
there was this man, and he is climbin' up that coconut tree.
12:27
Uh-oh.
12:28
His hat about hit the barbecue grill.
12:31
(instrumental music)
12:35
You lost your hat!
12:37
Are you fixin' to pick you a coconut?
12:39
- Yeah, I'll pick one.
12:42
(Paula laughing)
12:47
- Now, how long have you been climbin' coconut trees?
12:50
- I've been climbing coconut trees for 40 years.
12:53
- 40 years?
12:54
No wonder you do it so well.
12:55
He cuts the green coconut
12:58
and lets me taste the milk out of it.
13:01
(instrumental music)
13:08
All I need is a straw. (laughs)
13:11
- That's the dry one.
13:12
- [Paula] That's a dry coconut?
13:14
- That's the dry coconut, and this is the young one.
13:17
So in about three more months,
13:19
this one you have will be like this one.
13:22
- The young coconut juice, y'all, was light,
13:24
almost like water,
13:25
but the mature one, oh, it was rich
13:29
and sweet with a really authentic coconut taste.
13:33
This is much better than that.
13:35
Thank you so much.
13:36
- You're welcome, my friend.
13:37
Thanks very much.
13:38
- This has been unbelievable.
13:40
- Thank you.
13:42
- Y'all, later on, we've got some deep sea adventures
13:45
that's gonna have you in stitches.
13:48
But up next...
13:49
- If you think holding onto a man's waist, being drug
13:53
through the sea as a kite surfer, I'm a champion.
13:57
I'm a champion.
14:01
I hope y'all are enjoying the show
14:03
and I want to hear from you.
14:04
Tell me what recipes or videos you'd like to see me
14:07
make by just leaving a short comment below.
14:11
Now, let's get back to the show, y'all.
14:15
(instrumental music)
14:19
- You know you're not in Savannah anymore, don't you?
14:20
- I'm telling ya, gorgeous.
14:22
- Aren't y'all glad to finally be gettin'
14:23
some vacation time away from work and the restaurant?
14:26
- I have enjoyed being with y'all so much.
14:29
- It's awesome.
14:30
- Where did Brooke and Jack take off to?
14:31
- Jack's tired, he needed some time.
14:32
- Oh, so they're in the room?
14:35
(upbeat music)
14:36
- We wanted Mom to go see some beautiful blue water,
14:40
which she had not seen before.
14:41
- [Paula] They were so ready to get to that beach.
14:44
- Surprise, we're goin' kite surfin'.
14:47
(instrumental music)
14:49
- Whatcha mean we?
14:51
- We're gonna get a big kite
14:52
and a surfboard. - Who is we?
14:53
- We is the we. - The we.
14:54
- The we that is right here.
14:55
- We we?
14:56
Michael and I knew dad-gum good and well
14:59
we were not up for that.
15:01
You know what I see right through there?
15:04
- [Bobby] A restaurant.
15:05
- It's a restaurant.
15:06
- [Michael] I'll escort you.
15:07
- Yeah, there you go.
15:09
So we left the kids to their kite surfin',
15:11
and off Michael and I go to The Reef restaurant.
15:16
I'm tellin' you what, just bein' around the water
15:19
makes me hungry.
15:20
- Everything makes me hungry.
15:22
- Everything makes me hungry. (laughing)
15:23
- Hello.
15:24
- Hello. - Hello, how are you?
15:26
- I'm fine, thank you.
15:27
- Well, we get up there and great time of day.
15:30
You know, all this local cuisine
15:31
that I didn't have a clue what it was.
15:35
Now, what is that roti or whatever that is over there?
15:38
- We have veggie roti and a seafood roti.
15:40
- I said it right?
15:41
Roti? - Yeah, it's roti.
15:43
- What is that?
15:44
- Different seafood.
15:45
It's carrots and vegetables, beans,
15:47
and it's wrapped up in a pastry shell.
15:50
- That sounds wonderful.
15:51
Let's try one of those.
15:53
What do you have that is local?
15:55
- We have saltfish and bakes.
15:57
- Who?
15:57
- Saltfish.
15:58
Saltfish is a sort of cod fish.
16:00
Comes with bones, but then we boil it up,
16:02
take out the bones,
16:04
and then stew it with the local seasoning.
16:07
- And what are the bakes?
16:08
A baked potato?
16:09
- No, it's a pastry like a bread.
16:11
And then instead of baking it, we fry it.
16:13
- You shut up, girl.
16:15
(all laugh)
16:18
I think we hit pay dirt on that one.
16:21
(upbeat music)
16:23
- This is gonna be awesome.
16:25
Are you excited?
16:26
- Hey, how are you doing?
16:27
- Hey, man, what's happenin'?
16:27
- Dude, we're here to go kite surfing.
16:29
- You've come to the place.
16:30
You've definitely come to the place.
16:31
You guys ready to go for it now?
16:32
- Yeah. - Perfect.
16:33
What we're gonna do, we'll go out with a little kite,
16:35
and we'll have a quick train with it.
16:36
And we'll get you straight suited and booted,
16:38
and we'll get you out in the water.
16:39
- Some pretty strong wind here.
16:40
- [Jamie] There's a training kite on the beach,
16:41
sort of a small training kite,
16:43
and you sort of get a little confidence
16:45
about yourself with that.
16:48
- How do you come down, David?
16:49
- [Instructor] If anything ever goes wrong,
16:50
you bring the kite straight up to that 12 o'clock position
16:53
like it is now.
16:54
- Okay.
16:55
- And everything just stops.
16:56
Everything's nice and safe
16:57
and you stop moving and everything.
16:58
- If anything goes wrong...
17:00
(Bobby laughs)
17:02
- What could possibly go wrong?
17:03
- Nothing can go wrong.
17:04
(upbeat music)
17:05
- It's pretty technical
17:07
'cause you have to learn to get this kite up.
17:09
Then you can't cross your lines.
17:10
- [Bobby] Oh, pull it out, pull it out,
17:11
pull it out. - You got it, you got it.
17:13
- [Bobby] Pull out, pull it out!
17:14
- And then once all this happens, you have
17:15
to somehow put two feet into a board
17:18
and then figure out how not to be drug
17:20
to South America.
17:21
- Ooh!
17:23
Ah, no, it's not okay is it?
17:25
- That's all right.
17:26
(both laughing)
17:28
That's all right.
17:29
- So if something goes wrong,
17:30
that would be what happens?
17:31
- That's what happens.
17:33
- Here comes our food.
17:35
- Oh, good.
17:35
- Okay, here we go.
17:36
Lunch is ready.
17:37
- That didn't take long.
17:38
- Saltfish and bakes.
17:39
Who's having saltfish?
17:40
- I think I'll have the saltfish.
17:41
- And then the seafood roti.
17:44
- Thank you, ma'am.
17:44
- It was very, very interesting.
17:47
Let me tell you, the bake was like a fried biscuit.
17:51
Michael.
17:52
- Is it delicious?
17:55
- It tastes like my mama's donuts.
17:58
- [Michael] Let me try the saltfish.
17:59
That's saltfish, huh?
18:01
- [Paula] Mm-hmm.
18:02
(instrumental music)
18:04
This is like, Michael, they have just deep fried a biscuit.
18:08
- That's good.
18:09
It's got like seaweed in it.
18:11
Try this.
18:12
- So this is a seafood
18:13
- Roti. - roti.
18:16
- Seafood roti was good.
18:19
Kinda like a pot pie, almost, with seafood in.
18:21
- Oh my gosh, that's yummy.
18:23
Seafood roti was almost like a stew.
18:27
It had been stewed down with potatoes and vegetables.
18:32
I like this better than that.
18:35
Mm!
18:36
- That's very hot.
18:37
That's good.
18:39
- It was great fun to sit out there on this beautiful beach
18:42
and enjoy this delicious food.
18:46
- So you got your rash vests on.
18:47
You're all ready to hit the water.
18:49
Just gonna wish you with these things.
18:50
So these are your harnesses.
18:51
- Okay. - So you I'll give you that.
18:52
That one there.
18:54
- [Jamie] It turned out really not so good when I had
18:56
to put on the suit.
18:58
You have to wear these beautiful, sort of snug shirts.
19:02
- [Instructor] How's that feel?
19:04
- Hot and tight. - Looks great.
19:05
- You have these really cool lookin' helmets.
19:08
Equipment check.
19:09
(both laugh)
19:11
It's a very good look.
19:12
- I've also been blessed with a very large head.
19:15
You ready to go? - Perfect.
19:16
- All right, great, let's go.
19:18
(all laughing)
19:22
- All right, seriously, let's go.
19:24
Next step is he takes you out into the water,
19:26
and he uses a real kite.
19:28
And there's some strong winds down there in the Caribbean.
19:33
- You had to focus on flying your kite.
19:35
Then you have to get the board up underneath you.
19:38
They said normally, six to nine hours
19:40
before anyone could ever get up on a board
19:42
and actually fly the kite.
19:46
- [Jamie] We were gettin' dragged around is what it was.
19:49
(waves crashing)
19:51
- Y'all were great!
19:55
Crash Gordon and Captain America!
19:58
- It was pretty cool. - Was it fun?
20:00
- Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
20:01
- Oh my God.
20:02
- Hey, how are you?
20:04
Oh my goodness, y'all looked like
20:05
y'all were havin' so much fun.
20:08
- If you think holding onto a man's waist,
20:11
being drug through the sea as a kite surfer, I'm a champion.
20:16
I'm a champion.
20:17
- Y'all, it can hardly get better,
20:19
but trust me, it does.
20:21
Up next, we hit the water for some fun in the sun.
20:24
(water splashing)
20:25
And then, we've got dinner plans at the island's
20:28
most romantical restaurant.
20:32
I so hope y'all are enjoying the show.
20:35
And if you do.
20:37
Be sure to click like, subscribe and
20:40
notification bell so you'll never miss a video.
20:44
And we'll be right back after the break.
20:48
(upbeat music)
20:52
St. Lucia is just enchanting.
20:55
From the people to the flavors of the food,
20:58
we've all fallen in love with the island,
21:01
and there's still lots to discover.
21:04
What is this about, guys?
21:06
- Well, this is our sailboat docked out here.
21:07
It can't come in so close,
21:08
so we have to get on this ferry.
21:10
It's gonna take us out.
21:11
We're gonna spend the day cruisin' around the pitons.
21:12
- No! - All right.
21:14
- [Paula] The boys had kind of taken charge
21:16
of our scheduling,
21:17
and they planned a day for sailin'.
21:19
- We love to be on the water.
21:21
To get on a boat and be able to sail in the Caribbean,
21:24
it's really somethin' that we couldn't miss.
21:27
(upbeat music)
21:29
- We got on the most beautiful sailboat
21:32
and sailed around the island to where the pitons are.
21:36
- It was a perfect day.
21:37
(striking music)
21:40
- I hollered down to Dad and Paula,
21:41
I was like, "There's that ship,
21:43
and it looks like the one
21:44
on the 'Pirates of the Caribbean'."
21:45
- Do your pirate talk.
21:47
- Argh, matey!
21:48
(Paula laughing)
21:51
- They pulled up alongside us and fired off their cannons
21:54
and so much fun.
21:55
It was so great.
21:56
- The name of this boat is called The Unicorn,
22:00
but in the movie "The Pirates of the Caribbean",
22:02
it was called the Black Pearl.
22:04
You can take tours on this boat,
22:07
and we passed this ship,
22:09
and it's just full of folks.
22:12
Hey!
22:13
- [Michael] Hey, y'all!
22:14
(upbeat music)
22:16
- The place that we were goin' was a beautiful little place
22:20
just kinda tucked in the bottoms of the mountains.
22:24
And the only way you can get to it is by boat.
22:26
- We're ready. - Woo!
22:28
- [Paula] On the count of three.
22:29
Now, let's hear it for Jamie.
22:31
(water splashing)
22:33
Way to go!
22:36
- Woo!
22:38
- Perfect!
22:39
It was just like turning back the clock.
22:42
All of a sudden, these big ol' kids
22:44
became real, real little
22:47
and were out there splashin' and playin'.
22:52
Of course, Michael and I were sittin' on the boat
22:54
like two little fat chillin', waitin' for lunch to be ready.
22:58
(Paul laughs)
23:00
The captain prepared a fabulous lunch for us.
23:03
Naturally, since we were on the ocean,
23:05
it was only fitting that we have seafood.
23:08
- It's a fresh king fish we caught.
23:10
We caught it this morning.
23:12
- Unbelievable!
23:13
- Oh, it was a fight too.
23:14
- It was a fight? - Oh, yeah.
23:16
- How much did it weigh?
23:17
- It weighed about 40 pounds.
23:19
- 40 pounds?
23:21
- 40 pounds, yes.
23:23
- And you only gave me, like, six ounces out of it?
23:25
- Well, after you filet it out
23:27
and you take out the bones, you know,
23:27
you only got like two sides of real tender meat.
23:32
- [Paula] Oh my goodness, it's delicious.
23:33
- You've got some parsley.
23:35
It has scallions, it has thyme in it.
23:38
Put some local tomatoes
23:39
and also, it has a little bit of shado beni.
23:41
It's a small little bit of leaves.
23:43
It's very strong herbs,
23:45
but it's very good for the fish.
23:47
- Do y'all see I'm no longer eatin'
23:48
outta my plate and I'm eatin'-
23:50
- You're going from Michael's salad, which is extraordinary.
23:52
- [Paula] Well, honey, let me tell you somethin'.
23:54
I could have drank that dressin'.
23:56
- You have meat on your plate,
23:57
and you're eatin' Michael's salad.
23:58
So that tells you how good the dressing is.
23:59
- That salad dressing.
24:01
- It's wonderful.
24:01
- I so badly wanted to know what was in it.
24:04
And he said somethin' like mustard and mayonnaise.
24:08
I know that is not true.
24:10
That was not mustard and mayonnaise.
24:14
Never did find out, but ooh, it was so, so good.
24:18
- Wow.
24:20
- That was just right.
24:21
- Delicious.
24:22
- It's just really a nice, light satisfying meal.
24:25
(upbeat music)
24:28
- First of all, we need a strong guy to do the honors,
24:31
start pulling the main sail up.
24:32
- Here I am.
24:33
- All right.
24:35
- Oh, you meant real strong.
24:38
- [Captain] Oh, yeah.
24:39
- [Paula] When Captain Robali found out that Michael was
24:43
a captain here in the States,
24:45
he turned over the wheel to Michael.
24:47
- Mike's usually behind the wheel of a huge tugboat
24:51
with these powerful hydraulic motors,
24:53
and so when he had to trust the wind
24:56
and when the boat kinda,
25:00
I was nervous.
25:01
- Have you ever sailed a boat like this before?
25:03
- Not really.
25:04
As a kid, I piddled with it a little bit, but
25:07
no.
25:08
I was learnin', but I had to learn quick.
25:10
This is fun.
25:12
I love the quiet.
25:13
- This is great fun.
25:15
Caught on pretty quick too.
25:17
- Seein' Michael have the wheel
25:19
of that huge sailboat in his hands
25:23
and lookin' up at him when he would have
25:26
that sailboat almost layin' on its side,
25:29
seein' the look of pure, raw contentment
25:33
and happiness on his face,
25:36
that was pretty good.
25:39
(easy-going music)
25:41
- I'd been away from my family all day long.
25:44
And for us to sail up into this bay to the restaurant
25:47
where Brooke and I had celebrated our marriage
25:49
and my son standin' on the dock,
25:51
that was my favorite single part of the whole trip.
25:56
- Say, hi, Daddy.
25:59
- All day long toolin' around St. Lucia
26:01
and then stoppin' at the pitons and go for a little swim
26:03
and have a gourmet lunch cooked by the captain of the boat.
26:10
I can't wait to see what's next. (laughs)
26:13
Is it actually gonna get better?
26:17
- It was a perfect welcoming.
26:19
- This is where we're gonna have dinner.
26:20
Brooke and I found this place when we were
26:22
on our honeymoon two years ago,
26:23
and it's so romantic.
26:26
- We freshened up, y'all,
26:27
and headed to the Rainforest Hideaway.
26:30
We couldn't wait to taste their famous island spice dishes
26:34
made with things like local rums and cinnamon, ginger,
26:38
and Scotch bonnet peppers.
26:40
Our chef, owner, and host that night
26:44
was named Chef James Verity.
26:47
He prepared a cocoa and chili dusted scallop,
26:50
and it had a mint pea puree.
26:53
The next course the chef prepared us was
26:56
a Lucian spiced pumpkin and coconut soup.
27:01
Isn't that a different combination, y'all?
27:04
- It's unusual because it's hot,
27:05
and it's sweet at the same time.
27:07
- I taste the graininess of the coconut.
27:11
- Definitely.
27:12
- The pumpkin soup was just the best soup
27:14
that I had ever had.
27:15
It was absolutely delicious.
27:17
- The main course that he prepared for us
27:20
was a jerked spiced shrimp.
27:23
It was served along with a Parmesan risotto
27:26
and a lime ginger cream.
27:29
- Oh my gosh! - That's what was waitin' on.
27:31
Is it real hot?
27:31
- Just what the doctor ordered.
27:34
- Mm!
27:35
(easy-going music)
27:36
For dessert, he prepared us rum-sauteed bananas
27:41
with a butterscotch sauce and a coconut ice cream.
27:45
Well, you know how I love coconut.
27:48
Have y'all noticed that the bananas here are,
27:51
they're like they've been injected with sugar?
27:53
- Well, you know why, right?
27:55
- Why? - Tell us, please.
27:56
- 'Cause in the States, the bananas ripen in the store
27:59
off the vine.
28:00
Down here, the bananas ripen on the vine,
28:02
so it gives a completely different flavor
28:04
and you can taste it. - Oh, they're delicious.
28:05
- [Bobby] Isn't it so?
28:06
- You know, this has been everything
28:08
that I thought it would be, Michael.
28:09
- And more. - And more.
28:11
And you know what?
28:13
I can't wait to see what tomorrow's gonna bring.
28:17
- I can't either.
28:18
- It's just a night to remember.
28:20
It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
28:25
(Paul laughs)
28:26
The Deen-Groover family vacation is ending
28:29
with 10 pounds of yumminess.
28:32
We want this one.
28:34
- One?
28:35
- But first,
28:36
Hit it!
28:37
we've got a St. Lucia special adventure to try.
28:41
- That was great.
28:45
I hope y'all are enjoying the show
28:47
and I want to hear from you.
28:48
Tell me what recipes or videos you'd like to see me
28:51
make by just leaving a short comment below.
28:55
Now, let's get back to the show, y'all.
28:59
(instrumental music)
29:07
- So I had heard about this market, y'all,
29:10
that's located in Castries,
29:12
which is the capital of St. Lucia.
29:16
What a treat that was.
29:18
Everybody had their booths,
29:19
and they were sellin' their wares.
29:21
A lot of fresh produce.
29:24
Michael, we gotta have some tangerines.
29:27
And what are these?
29:28
- These are golden apples.
29:30
- Golden apples? - Yes.
29:33
- You want a couple of them? - They're like green apples,
29:35
but they're a little more citrus than the apples.
29:37
- Little more citrus? - Right.
29:40
(easy-going music)
29:42
- This market has been in business over a hundred years.
29:45
And all the locals bring their goods here
29:48
because it was right next to the harbor.
29:50
When the ships would come in,
29:51
they would swap and trade goods.
29:54
- And there was also booths actually preparing lunches.
29:58
Well, you know, Paula done sniffed her way to that booth.
30:01
Hello!
30:03
How are you? - How are you?
30:05
- I'm great!
30:06
- Doing good?
30:07
- I'm great.
30:07
What are y'all cookin' in here?
30:09
- Oh, today we have, that's some steamed salad.
30:12
Steam.
30:13
Steamed salad. - Steamed salad, yes.
30:14
- And there, we have some very nice stew lamb.
30:17
- Stewed lamb. - Oh, lamb.
30:18
Stewed lamb.
30:20
- And there we have some nice stewed turkey.
30:22
- Turkey. - Turkey?
30:23
- [Booth Worker] Yeah.
30:24
- [Paula] And what are y'all cookin' back there?
30:26
- [Booth Worker] Oh, that's a fish sauce.
30:28
That's a fish sauce.
30:30
Then we fry the fish.
30:31
It's fried, and you put it in the sauce.
30:33
- She asked what we wanted on the plate,
30:36
and naturally, I said, I want a sample of it all.
30:42
- [Booth Worker] Here's the fish.
30:43
- Oh, great. - Is it ready?
30:45
- That looks wonderful.
30:47
- Enjoy it, honey.
30:48
- Well, thank you so much.
30:49
I will. - All right, baby.
30:50
- It looks wonderful.
30:51
- Thank you!
30:52
It was just a little bit of everything
30:54
that she was cookin'.
30:56
And ooh my goodness was it ever so good.
31:00
- That's the yam.
31:01
- [Michael] Yam.
31:02
- A yam!
31:03
That was the best meal that I had
31:06
while I was in St. Lucia
31:08
because you know I have a very simple kind of palate.
31:11
I love homemade food.
31:14
If I'd had a grandmother livin' on the islands,
31:17
then I had just stepped into my grandmother's kitchen.
31:20
The food was just
31:23
delicious.
31:24
(instrumental music)
31:26
You're good, girl! - Okay, baby.
31:28
- You're good! - Thank you.
31:30
(instrumental music)
31:31
- Well, we proceed to walk through the market.
31:34
Hey, how're y'all doin'?
31:36
- Good, good.
31:37
- And I could feel somebody lookin' at me.
31:43
Hello, darlin', what you got in your sack?
31:47
Huh?
31:48
- I've got macaroni and cheese.
31:49
- Macaroni and cheese?
31:52
Her name was Cavanaugh.
31:54
Do you know that one of the most popular dishes
31:56
at my restaurant in America is macaroni and cheese?
32:01
- No.
32:02
But I watch your show.
32:04
- You watch my show?
32:07
She said she was there with her grandmother.
32:09
That her grandmother had a booth.
32:12
Hey!
32:13
- So nice to see you this day.
32:15
We watch you every day!
32:17
- I'm so happy to meet you.
32:19
- Oh, and I'm so happy to meet you.
32:21
- In real life!
32:23
- In real life.
32:25
You got the real deal, honey.
32:28
We all love goin' on vacation
32:31
and eatin' the cuisine of wherever we are,
32:34
but the boys said now it's time
32:38
to do somethin' else.
32:41
- All we're gonna do is tour
32:42
this beautiful, tranquil rainforest.
32:44
- You are gonna love...
32:45
Look how gorgeous it is!
32:46
- Isn't beautiful? - Fresh air.
32:47
- I see it's beautiful.
32:48
I still don't trust y'all.
32:49
- It's terrific. - Yeah.
32:50
- You wanna know the name of the place?
32:52
- Yeah. - Treetop Adventures.
32:54
We're ziplinin' through the rainforest!
32:57
- You are not gonna believe
32:59
what they had their poor mama doin'.
33:02
- Come on, we gotta gear up. - Get you in some gear.
33:04
- What you mean gear?
33:06
Who are all those men?
33:09
Am I scared?
33:09
Yes. - She's scared, guys.
33:11
Is it completely safe?
33:12
- How many time you done this, son?
33:13
- Actually, this is my first day at work.
33:14
- Oh my God, it's his first day on the job!
33:17
(upbeat music)
33:21
- Beautiful.
33:22
Now, this I'm used to.
33:24
We all looked great.
33:25
Started with a hairnet. (laughs)
33:27
- You are fixin' to screw up a perfectly good hairdo.
33:32
(upbeat music)
33:37
(all laughing)
33:40
I'm ready. - You ready?
33:41
(all laughing)
33:45
- Maybe I ain't ready.
33:47
- That's a helmet check.
33:49
(all laughing)
33:51
- [Jamie] We were all officially in gear and ready to go.
33:55
We stood around and just laughed at each other
33:57
for about five minutes before we got started.
33:59
(drum music)
34:04
- Ouch!
34:05
I don't think I'm gonna be able to hold on, oh.
34:08
(Jamie and Bobby laughing)
34:13
I hate y'all!
34:14
(all laughing)
34:17
It's a plot to get my money.
34:19
(all laughing)
34:21
- Not a bad idea.
34:23
- [Jamie] Zip lines, I'm sure that's what she's dreamed
34:25
of doing her whole life.
34:27
- Let's go.
34:28
Hit it.
34:29
(Paula screams)
34:30
- Go, Mama!
34:31
Go, Mama!
34:32
(chaotic drum music)
34:36
(Paula screams)
34:37
Oh my God, that's great.
34:40
- Oh my goodness.
34:41
- I can't believe she did it.
34:45
- That was wonderful.
34:46
That was wonderful.
34:48
(upbeat music)
34:54
- Wow!
34:55
(upbeat music)
34:58
- How cool is that?
35:00
(Michelle screaming)
35:05
(Paula screaming)
35:12
- Holy moly!
35:14
(upbeat music)
35:18
There I am, y'all, just danglin'.
35:20
Just danglin'.
35:21
One of the young men had to come out there
35:26
and get me. (laughs)
35:28
You gonna get me?
35:31
Oh, God, I'm so glad to see you.
35:34
(upbeat music)
35:40
Hey, I screwed up!
35:44
- It was a great day.
35:44
I think Mom was really surprised and had a lot of fun.
35:50
And that's how you do that.
35:52
- Comin' up, y'all, the Deens are takin'
35:54
on the Caribbean deep seas.
35:57
Watch out!
35:59
- [Bobby] You see the fish?
36:00
- [Jamie] Oh, it's getting closer, Mom.
36:02
I so hope y'all are enjoying the show.
36:04
And if you do.
36:06
Be sure to click like, subscribe and
36:09
notification bell so you'll never miss a video.
36:13
And we'll be right back after the break.
36:18
(light guitar music)
36:22
- It was our last day in St. Lucia,
36:24
and the boys wanted to take Mama deep sea fishing.
36:29
Jamie and Bobby had planned an activity
36:33
for Michael and Michelle to enjoy together, horseback ridin'
36:37
and an activity for the boys and me.
36:40
It's very seldom do we get individual time with our kids.
36:45
We're usually thrown into a group.
36:48
I so want y'all to catch one.
36:50
- They actually caught a marlin
36:52
that weighed about 1,500 pounds
36:53
off the same boat we were on.
36:55
So we were excited when we got started.
36:57
- And the fact that we're doin' this together,
36:59
the three of us, for the first time is like the best.
37:03
In Savannah, you have to go out, like, 40 miles
37:06
to deep sea fish.
37:08
Well, there, five minutes and you're there.
37:13
I decided to get comfortable while we're waitin'
37:15
on the fish to bite,
37:16
and all of a sudden, Bobby spotted a pod of pilot whales.
37:22
- There's a bunch of 'em!
37:23
Hurry up, Mom.
37:24
Come here.
37:25
Look, right over here.
37:26
Right over here, look. - Where?
37:27
- [Bobby] Coming right here.
37:28
- [Paula] Oh my gracious.
37:30
- [Bobby] Look, there's about eight of 'em right there.
37:32
- [Paula] They're comin' towards the boat.
37:35
- Oh, wow! - Wow!
37:36
- [Paula] Look!
37:37
- It's the first time I'd seen pilot whales,
37:39
and it was a special thing because the fishin' was slow.
37:44
And then just about the time we began to poke our lip out,
37:48
oh, poor us, we're not catching any fish,
37:50
hey, how about whale watchin'?
37:53
- [Paula] You know what, guys?
37:54
I don't care now if we don't catch a fish.
37:58
While the boys and I were ridin' the high seas,
38:00
Michael and Michelle were saddlin' up
38:02
for another type of excitement.
38:05
- How do you feel, Dad? - Fine.
38:06
- [Michelle] It's been a while since we've ridden together.
38:09
- [Michael] I know it.
38:10
- Especially on the beach.
38:11
I don't think we've ever gotten to ride
38:12
on the beach, have we?
38:13
- I don't think we've ever been on the beach.
38:14
I grew up with horses, so I really love 'em.
38:16
I felt sorry for that one that he had to haul me around,
38:20
and I was almost as big as the horse.
38:23
Michelle, you wanna race?
38:24
- I've wanted to race you since I was just a little girl,
38:27
what are you talkin' about?
38:30
- Go! - Go!
38:31
Go!
38:32
Come on, boy, come on!
38:33
Yeah, woo!
38:36
- That was the ultimate, to be able
38:37
to ride on the beach.
38:38
- [Michelle] I told you I was gonna beat you!
38:41
- I let her win.
38:42
- Woo!
38:43
Yeah right, Dad, don't lie.
38:45
It was a memory I'll have with me forever.
38:49
- Yippee aye-yay.
38:50
(upbeat music)
38:52
- I was so tired (laughs)
38:55
'cause I had been ziplinin' (laughs)
38:57
and all that stuff.
38:58
Mama was pooped.
39:00
- Mom's asleep.
39:01
Jamie and I decided we wanted to pull a joke on Mom.
39:03
Captain had one fish that they had caught that morning,
39:06
but this fish was frozen.
39:08
(upbeat music)
39:09
- The boys started yellin', "Fish, we've got a fish!"
39:13
- Oh, fish! - Mom, we got a fish!
39:15
Come on. - Come on.
39:16
Come on! - Come on, get up.
39:19
- Come on.
39:21
- I hear it.
39:22
- Get in the chair.
39:23
She got one.
39:26
- Let me get him, Noah.
39:29
- Get him, Mama.
39:30
- Oh, he's fightin'.
39:31
- You think he is, is he?
39:33
- Oh my gosh!
39:34
- Mom actually thought she was catchin' a fish. (laughs)
39:38
- Mom springs up out,
39:39
and she fights a dead frozen fish
39:42
for about 15 minutes.
39:43
It was awesome.
39:44
- Can't believe we got one.
39:46
- You're hungry, ain't ya?
39:48
- I'm starvin'.
39:49
I'm workin' like a dog.
39:51
That fish is fightin' me to beat the band.
39:54
And I worked and I worked,
39:57
and I got that fish up to the boat.
40:00
I don't wanna give it up.
40:02
Get that club and knock him in the head.
40:04
(all laugh)
40:07
- [Bobby] I think you got the fight out of him, Mom, almost.
40:11
- He's got the fight out of me, I know that.
40:13
- Okay.
40:15
- Hey, look at that! - Ya-hoo!
40:19
- He's frozen!
40:21
(all laughing)
40:23
He's froze.
40:24
(Jamie and Bobby laughing)
40:27
- We wanted to make sure you caught a fish.
40:29
So we brought one with us.
40:31
(all laughing)
40:34
- The whole time, I was thinkin', great time of day.
40:37
This sucker is fightin' me. (laughs)
40:41
- You wanna club him?
40:42
(all laughing)
40:43
- No, I wanna club you.
40:46
(all laughing)
40:48
And you.
40:51
That's who I wanna club.
40:54
- [Bobby] Oh, that was worth the trip.
40:55
(all laughing)
40:57
(acoustic guitar music)
41:00
- It was just a spectacular day
41:02
on the water with my boys, y'all.
41:04
And as the sun started to go down, we headed back to port.
41:08
(acoustic guitar music)
41:11
The boys had made arrangements for us to meet up
41:14
with Michael and Michelle
41:16
in a little village called Anse La Raye.
41:20
- We heard that there's an actual fish fry festival
41:23
every Friday night.
41:25
We knew that it was somethin' that we'd had to see.
41:28
- Uh-oh, Mama found some more food.
41:32
- Ooh, hot outta the oven.
41:33
- Oh my gracious!
41:35
It's hot as a, ooh. - Try that.
41:37
- Ooh, that is hot.
41:38
- [Bobby] Ooh, and it's good,
41:39
very good. - That was good.
41:40
- Mm.
41:42
You hit that one, brother.
41:43
That is good.
41:46
- I just couldn't believe that our vacation was finally up.
41:49
We had had such a wonderful time as a family.
41:53
(Jamie laughs)
41:54
- It was a lot of fun.
41:56
We almost got to know each other better.
41:58
- Look at the lobsters, Mom.
41:59
- We want this one.
42:00
- One?
42:02
There's five of us.
42:02
I could eat that one by myself.
42:03
- Okay, can we get two like this?
42:06
- Puttin' 'em in a boiling pot of water.
42:07
- These 10-pound lobsters were the perfect treat
42:11
for our last night in St. Lucia.
42:13
(instrumental music)
42:16
The food was just delicious.
42:20
- The lobster was good.
42:21
It was one of the biggest I've ever seen.
42:22
Gosh, I hate to tell y'all, but this is our last night.
42:25
- No! - No!
42:26
- And I don't wanna leave.
42:28
- Well, then let's don't.
42:29
- We've had such a wonderful time.
42:31
- This St. Lucian vacation was like steppin'
42:35
into paradise for a little while.
42:38
- Just being with family, it's a celebration of family.
42:41
It's like everything that we do.
42:42
- That was the first time that Jamie and Mom
42:45
and I have been on vacation together since 1989,
42:50
since we started our business.
42:52
It was great.
42:53
Had a wonderful time.
42:54
- Cheers. - Cheers.
42:56
- A big bottle of water.
42:58
- [Michael] I'll sit back and I'll stay.
43:01
- [Paula] It's been a great vacation, y'all.
43:04
- Oh my gosh. - Really has.
43:05
- [Michael] I can't wait 'til our next event.
43:07
- I'm about to pop too. - Me either.
43:11
Hey, y'all, it's Paula Deen.
