Paddle! Paddle
0:02
Today on Rolls Party, y'all, is my favorite recipes from every decade
0:07
And I'm gonna be dressing the part for the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s
0:12
through the day. We're going retro with a cheesy fondue surprise. We always suspected that Mike was cheesy. I got proof
0:20
My youngin' Bobby Dean is gonna be dropping in for his favorite childhood dish
0:26
His goulash, y'all. and another famous son, y'all, straight out of the 70s
0:32
dishes about his romance with a Brady Bunch co-star. Was that your first kiss
0:37
Yes, it was. It was very Brady. And his carrot cake, y'all, for my grandson Jack's TV debut
0:44
So y'all pick your favorite decade, because we're gonna go back in time
0:50
Let's party! Thank you
1:27
Such a fun party today. Y'all sit down and get comfortable. We're going to be walking through the decades today
1:37
Are you like me? Do you taste a certain food and associate a time period in your life
1:43
So that's what we're going to do today. We're going to walk down memory lane through all of the decades
1:50
and we're going to be fixing the food that I associate with that time period
1:55
Does that sound fun? Yes! Let's party! Y'all, I forgot something
2:07
Y'all sit right here. I'll be right back. It's the 50s, y'all
2:21
Get on, Pattern! Get on! Get on! Get on! I'm 13 again
2:40
I know. Are you looking? Do you love my poodle skirt? Y'all, over here, I've got two of my oldest and dearest friends, Diane and Darlene Tetter
2:52
All right, let's start the 50s, y'all. You ready? I'm going to be making my mama's old-fashioned banana pudding
3:08
Now, I've got some sugar, and I've got... some cornstarch
3:22
Now, I'm going to add my milk, and you see I've added my dry ingredients
3:27
because I don't want it to clump up my custard. And in a minute, we're going to temper our eggs and put our eggs in there
3:35
All right, so who's got something to say? So this recipe that you're making
3:40
what memories does it bring back for you from your childhood? Oh, my goodness, it brings back so many memories
3:47
because this is one of the things that my mother would have waiting on the counter
3:53
when school was out. and Bubba, Diane, Darlene and I, we'd all troop in the house
3:59
and dig into that warm bowl of banana pudding and you were just in heaven
4:07
All right, now y'all, I'm fixing to temper our eggs because our custard is thick
4:12
So temper just means to heat up slowly because when we add our eggs, we don't want them to be scrambled
4:22
You know, we don't want scrambled eggs in our custard. All right
4:26
The last step is to add butter and vanilla. Now, we're going to let this cool
4:32
And I've got some that's cooled down. All right. So all we're going to do is layer our vanilla wafers, our bananas, and our custard together
4:45
Kitchen fairies. Don't you love a kitchen fairy? Diane, come up here and taste this custard
4:53
Ooh, I was hoping you'd say that. See if it brings back memories. Y'all remember all the fudge we used to make
5:00
Yeah, taste that. Okay. All right. Well, Diane's tasting to make sure that's serving our memories correctly
5:07
Mmm, Paula. Isn't it yummy? Mmm, darling. All right, I'm going to come over here, and I'm going to slide our meringue
5:14
because Mama always, always put meringue on our banana pudding. Mm-hmm. And you know, back then, Diane, we could eat anything we wanted
5:25
and it wouldn't show up on our hips. I know. We were both so skinny back then
5:29
We were so skinny. All right, now we're just going to put this in the oven
5:34
Brown it off, and look! Woo! I feel like, I feel like Kari Hires is in the house
5:42
Oh, bless her. My mama. Sweetest woman. Come on up here. You dig in
5:48
Okay. Oh, come on, get your bite. All right. Mmm. Mmm, mmm, mmm
6:01
Y'all don't go anywhere. We're just now leaving the 50s. The good times were in the 60s
6:09
See you back in a minute. Up next, it's the 60s, y'all
6:17
with chocolate and cheese fondue. And later, one of the Brady Bunch boys
6:22
is gonna help me cook up some meat and potatoes for the 70s
6:26
Step into my kitchen, said the spider to the fly. Listen, y'all, out there in TV land
6:53
in case you've just tuned in, no, I am not a drag queen
6:59
Today's party, we're walking through the decades. And in case you don't realize what decade I'm in, I'm in the 60s
7:12
Everybody, you notice it's got a fondue pot on your table. We're fixing a fondue
7:19
We're going to have a sweet fondue, and we're going to have a savory fondue
7:24
So let get started You like it Phil
7:42
Okay. I'm going to start by heating up my saucepan because the first fondue is going to be that sweet fondue
7:52
a chocolate fondue. Now, I got a cup of cream here. Now, we're not going to let our cream come to a bowl
8:02
We want it to just simmer and get hot. All right, now I'm going to dump in my chocolate
8:10
Now, you can use any kind of chocolate that you like. If you love milk chocolate the way I love milk chocolate, use that
8:19
It'll be kind of like eating a melted candy bar, you know
8:25
All right. We've got a little grand manier. All right
8:37
Our chocolate's nice and melted. Doesn't that look good, y'all? Well, now listen, y'all got the same thing in your pot
8:47
Y'all start eating. Mm-mm. Isn't that good, y'all? Let's move on to our savory pot now
9:01
I've got two and a half cups of wine. And there again, we don't want that to come to a bowl
9:10
Now, I've got two different kind of cheeses right here. I've got a Gruyere and I've got a Swiss
9:16
I've got a couple of tablespoons, two or three tablespoons of flour
9:21
All right. Now, I'm going to slowly drop in my cheese into the wine
9:31
Do you all know when the last time I wore knee-high white pleather boots
9:38
I went to see the man of my dreams. I went to my sewing machine
9:43
I made me a hot pants outfit. Went and bought me some pleather boots
9:48
And I said, if he gets a glimpse of me, it is all over, and I'm going to be Mrs. Elvis
9:58
But when I got there with my outfit on and my hair teased out to, hey, hi, Georgia
10:06
I was a little disappointed where my seat was. It was the last seat in the tip top of this arena
10:16
I had to watch him through binoculars. All that sewing I had done was for naught
10:26
But I got to see Elvis. All right, our cheese is melting
10:31
I've got a little kersh. You know, that cherry liqueur. Oh, my good
10:38
All right, so here we go. It's a melting, y'all. You know what
10:46
And look at this pot. If that's a cheesy, I'm a kangaroo
10:52
I need more cheese, please. I'm trying to make a cheese fondue, not a..
10:58
Hey, y'all. Oh, my gracious. Hey, look at that. Hey, y'all. Hey, everybody
11:09
Hey, Mom. Has your mom embarrassed you, Mom? Have I embarrassed you
11:17
There's a couple things. A couple things. You know, we always suspected that Mike was cheesy
11:21
I got proof. He is a cheese hair. That's a tight dress
11:27
Look at them shoes. Oh, listen, son. One time your mama was hot
11:33
It just ain't today. I was born in the 60s. Is this what you looked like when I was born
11:38
No, I swear I did not. You got a question, honey. I've got a question. I have two little boys, ages three and four, and I am working very hard at creating memories with them in the kitchen
11:52
Do you have any fond memories of specific recipes or things that I might be able to try at home
11:57
You know what? Mom gave me a cookbook when I was six or seven years old, and it was the kid's cookbook
12:03
Y'all are great and a little fresh nutmeg and our cheese. And so when I could pull my cookbook out and Mom and I would do something together, that was just the greatest
12:12
If my house, God forbid, caught on fire, that'd be one of the things I'd have to grab
12:16
Sweet. All right. I'm trying to get you a spear, baby. Is that a peach wrapped in bacon
12:30
Yes. Only on Paula's party, and I got to try one. Uh-huh
12:37
Where in the world did you think of this? constantly thinking, baby, constantly thinking
12:47
Your mama's mind is like a steel trap. Old and rusty. Y'all stay tuned, the 70s are coming up
12:57
Woo! Coming up is the 70s, y'all, with a big Brady Bunch surprise
13:05
And later, we're going 80s, y'all, and I'm breakdancing over my son's favorite dish
13:24
It's the 70s, y'all! And I'm the dancing queen! Y'all, I could have easily worn this outfit in the 70s
13:35
because I was this skinny. Let me tell you, this is supposed to wrap around and tie in the back
13:44
Well, listen, without any further ado, y'all think for a second. What was your favorite show in the 70s
13:55
The Brady Bunch, yes! Would y'all like to meet the cutest star ever of the Brady Bunch
14:03
Christopher Knight Come on out Peter Brady, y'all
14:19
Thank you very much It's so exciting to meet you Oh, no, no, no, no, baby
14:24
And look at you I'm the one excited I can't believe I have to meet you Showing up in this outfit
14:29
I think Florence wore that Come on back here in my kitchen
14:33
Step into my kitchen, said the spider to the fly. Oh, my goodness, I don't want to cook
14:43
What do you want to do? Standing here with Peter. Looking like a damn fool
14:49
No, you look great. All right in the 70s y we were so dirt poor that we didn get steak very often But I would make what I called a poor man filet mignon It just ground beef wrapped in bacon with mashed potatoes
15:05
What was it like being on the set of the Brave Bunch? Make us too big open. Okay, um, what was it like
15:10
Did it screw you up? No, in fact, I think, I think in my case it actually helped, because we had a really wholesome environment to work in
15:21
As a matter of fact, it was conducive to children. All right, so we're just going to salt these a little bit
15:26
That's your special salt? What is in your special salt? Yeah, this is my house seasoning. Look at you go
15:31
It's salt, pepper, and garlic powder. All right, now we got some bacon over here that you see it's still limp
15:37
because we didn't want to cook it crisp. Look at this. I can't hardly move my arms
15:43
This outfit's so little. That color is really becoming on you. Oh, good
15:47
Well, thank you. You look like an orange blossom. So I'm... I am so in heat, or I mean, I'm so in love
15:58
I am so in love. All right, so now I understand that you just got married
16:04
I did. Can she cook? She said she could. Did she lie
16:10
She doesn't have any interest in the kitchen. She doesn't like certain things, and she won't try certain things
16:15
Oh, gosh. And I like everything. That's too bad, because you should always at least try something
16:21
before you don't like it. See, that's why you and I should have been together. All right. We're going to put your little
16:29
butter in there. Now, I want you to saute mushrooms, onions, chives, garlic
16:36
I can do that. Put this in, pour in the wine, and we're going to let it reduce, okay? Gotcha, gotcha
16:42
Let me ask you this, Chris. Did you have a crush on anybody? I was the object of someone else's crush for as many
16:49
years as we did the show. Eve had a crush on me for five years. You mean Jan, your sister
16:54
on the show? Yeah. She had a lot of patience because right around the end of our run, our
16:59
fifth season, I started to become aware of women. You were dumb to it. You were dumb
17:04
to the crush. I was just more interested in, you know, doing, you know, boy things. So
17:09
I showed a little affection back, you know, a little crush. We all, you know, sort of paired up. Did y'all kiss? Yes. Was that your first kiss? Yes. Yes. That was my first kiss
17:23
Was it really? I forgot the wine. I'm getting so upset here. Actually, the big story is
17:31
and one of my favorite experiences from doing the brain blanch was not in front of the camera. It
17:35
was when we all went over to England on the QE2. And Barry and I shared a bunk or a cabin and
17:42
Maureen and Eve shared a cabin, and one night Eve engineered Maureen to be out of their room
17:50
and I was to go to their room, and that's when I had my first kiss
17:55
Oh, I'm so upset. And you went to her cabin? Yes, I went to her cabin
18:00
It was a nice trip. I've just got to know. No, no
18:10
Okay. And it never happened. It was sweet and innocent Yes it was
18:13
It was very Brady Very Brady Very Brady Very Brady Well let me ask you this
18:19
Could Alice cook your housekeeper? The meals that we ate at that table were prepared by Irving our prop man
18:27
And he was an excellent cook I never saw Ann be cooked
18:33
She seemed like she knew what the utensils were for in the kitchen Oh well good You know so
18:37
You are precious Oh you're sweet Well, get our plate, Chris. Look at this
18:43
Look at our full man's filet. It looks just like full man's filet, doesn't it
18:48
It does. Put your one on a plate. Now, I want to give you..
18:53
Is this just regular ground beef or is it lean ground beef? I actually like like a 70-30
18:58
That means it's 70% meat, 30% fat. Oops. Sorry, you just flustered me so much
19:06
We're going to make your potatoes more beautiful. Mmm-mmm. This is what my children and I were eating when we would sit in front of that TV and watch the Brady Bunch
19:26
Pass us a fork, baby. My pleasure. Well, I just... Mmm. Is it good
19:33
Mmm. You know, I can't stand the thoughts of our time being over
19:39
Would you like to go into the 80s with me? Certainly. You're a precious
19:46
I can remember those. You can remember those. Thank you, Chris. Don't go anywhere
19:54
He's going to go into the 80s with me. Coming up, it's the 80s, y'all, with Bobby's goulash
20:03
Welcome back, y'all. So far today on Paula's Party, we're walking through the decades
20:13
just one recipe at a time. I kick things off with my mama's banana pudding
20:19
from the 50s. Mmm! My son Jamie surprised me, y'all, with something really cheesy
20:26
for our 60s fondue feast. Oh, my gracious! And Peter from the Brady Bunch
20:32
stop by to make a meat and potatoes dinner right out of the 70s
20:37
And still to come, y'all, I'm making an old recipe new again, and I'm naming
20:42
it after my baby grandson, Jack. I want to get physical
20:56
Physical! It's the 80s, y'all
21:07
We're flash dancing through the 80s. I'm having a flashback. Perfect. Chris, I'm so glad you agreed to stay with me and come back
21:19
because you remind me so much of another young man that's in my life
21:24
And that's my youngest son, Bobby. Bobby? I want y'all to meet each other
21:29
Bobby Dean! I'm on my way
21:41
Take your time. This is very Olivia Newton-John. Isn't it great? How are you
21:46
It's so great to see you. Well, I thought I was that other girl. What's her name? Jennifer Beale. Jennifer Beale
21:50
I thought I was Jennifer Beale. The flash dance thing? Yeah. You need a chair and a bucket of water
21:54
You didn't recognize me doing her dance? Oh, I missed that. Show me, show me, show me
22:00
Let's see it. That's exactly it. Have you met my mom? I have
22:06
Y'all look a lot alike. Do we look like that? We got the same height thing
22:10
Y'all are extremely tall. Extremely good looking. Oh, all right. Yes. Listen, y'all get together
22:19
I'm going to be over here doing my flash dancing. Well this is it looks like what you got going is goulash which was my favorite thing I don know if you ate this growing up but this was my favorite thing as a kid And in fact mom still makes this for me every year on my birthday You know this is the way my mother taught me to mix this together
22:37
And this is what you used to cook it in, too. Yeah, those are great. And Bobby loved it
22:41
Loved it. This is the dish that taught me how to overeat. Yeah. Well, so far, it's not bad for you
22:47
It's just, you know. Oh, we'll get there. And she started. And two, you know what
22:52
We ain't started yet, Peter. All right, Bobby. I watched you. Honey, finish chopping that onion
22:58
Growing up. And you chop that garlic, and y'all chat amongst yourselves. And I've got some favorite episodes
23:02
Do you get sick of hearing about the Brady Brunch and people asking you about it
23:06
No, I don't. In fact, it brings me back. So, do you have any questions
23:11
Well, comments. I mean, I remember a couple episodes. One was that I love the episode with the frogs and the pizza, the date
23:19
Where you guys are in the convertible, you're at the movie. Are you break dancing
23:24
Yeah, she's breakdancing. I'm breakdancing. This is the first completely... You look like a roach
23:31
Spin me, guys. Hey, Bobby
23:47
Your mom's one of a kind. You didn't knock a breakdance, did you? They call it, you're going to break something doing that dance, too
23:53
I think I already did. I liked the episode where y'all were in the convertible
23:59
and there were all the frogs and the pizza and the frogs jumping all over the car. Y'all remember all this stuff, I know
24:04
And that was like one of my favorite episodes. Why? Because of the frogs
24:08
I got to use those against Maureen. Marsha. Marsha. She hated it
24:12
We had a little, we had a school room. We had a little desk that had lift tops
24:16
I presented a great opportunity to hide a frog. Scared the mess out of me. Yeah, I got in big trouble
24:22
I also remember, I also remember the fake mustache. You're throwing that in? Peter wearing the fake mustache
24:28
Oh, yeah. I remember that one. And let's see. You protecting Cindy from the kid
24:34
Cindy had the list, and the kid was making fun of her. There was some violence on the Brady Bunch. There was some violence. What are you hinting
24:38
Golly, what else? I loved it when y'all went to Hawaii. I loved it when y'all went to the Grand Canyon and got put in jail
24:43
Y'all remember this? Yeah, Jim Bacchus. The Brady's in jail? Jim Bacchus, that's right
24:48
In Hawaii with Vincent Price. What a life you grew up. Yeah, it was, you know, it's hard to appreciate
24:52
until looking back on it, how unique and special it actually was. This looks like spaghetti sauce
25:00
It absolutely does, Peter. I meant Peter. I meant Chris. It's all right
25:07
You've had 35 years of me being Peter. This became Chris today
25:13
I want you to add Italian seasoning, bay leaf, soy sauce, How seasoning
25:23
Seasoning salt. All the bay leaves? Three bay leaves? All of them
25:26
Just dump baby. Mama, I don't remember. Italian seasoning. It looks like a little oregano. A little thyme, maybe
25:31
Uh-huh. Italian seasoning. It's got your rosemary. It's got your thyme. It's got your..
25:37
All them Italian seasonings. All of it. All of it, honey. One's at about a tablespoon
25:44
I think you're exactly on the money. Maybe another one. This headband is squeezing my brain so hard, I can't really..
25:49
Is this one of those dishes that the longer it cooks, the better it becomes
25:54
Absolutely. Absolutely. Because I remember this being better the next day. It's like pizza
25:59
If I left it. It's like spaghetti sauce that's better the next day. So what we're going to do now is we would let this simmer
26:07
And I add kind of like water. Kind of like water or water
26:13
It really is water. Okay. It's not the dry stuff. It's not the dry stuff
26:18
So what I do is I keep me a pitcher of water by my stove
26:23
and so I add water as I need it. Now, there's a couple of ways you can do your macaroni noodles
26:29
You can cook those in a separate pot of boiling water and dump them in at the very last
26:34
or about 30 minutes out on your pot of goulash. Throw them in with it
26:39
You can throw them in here. I cooked my last time I tried to do this. I cooked it separately
26:44
Mine just wasn't very good. It came out a whole lot more like a chili. Son. I know
26:48
It was a shame. You know what it was? The water. It must have been. It was the water. Because I didn't add any
26:51
You didn't add any water. I didn't add any water. I figured all the tomato sauce I put in there was
26:57
I gave you the recipe. I got in the kitchen one day, son. I formulated the recipe and I gave it. Lies
27:03
I did. I did. I did. I did. All right. Now, after it
27:09
Look up there. Ooh, that's the goulash. That's the goulash, ain't it, honey
27:13
I got to taste that. Let me give you a little bit. Mmm
27:17
That is the goulash that I remember growing up as a kid. Isn't it great? This is excellent
27:20
And it will. It'll be better the next day. And I'll throw together a green salad and some garlic bread, some French bread
27:27
And honey, we didn't know he was poor. We didn't know he was poor
27:33
No, this is high cotton right here. It's high cotton, baby. It's really, really easy
27:37
And for some reason, I can't do it. I've had you for the 70s, and I've had you for the 80s, but I've got to move on, baby
27:45
I'm not going to be there for the 90s. You've outgrown me
27:51
All right, well, before. Just slip into my dressing room, baby. I'll wait for you. I have to infringe on you and ask one more thing
27:57
What's that? A little thing that you said in one episode? Your favorite food was
28:01
Oh, my favorite food was pork chimes. And apple chimes. We'll be back
28:10
We're on to the 90s. Don't leave our party, y'all. Up next, the 90s dish that put Mama on the map
28:26
And later, the sweetest surprise, my little grandson Jack. Time flies when you're having fun, honey
28:51
It truly does. I am moving further and further away from my youth
28:58
It's the 90s. Now, I have to tell you, the 90s were tough
29:03
Those were tough years. A lot happened for me. But one of the best things in the whole world happened for me in the 90s
29:14
A woman came into my life that was going to be my soul sister
29:20
And she made every day for me getting up a heck of a lot easier
29:26
The head cook, the queen of the kitchen at the Lady and Sons, Dora
29:33
Dora Charles! Look! Beautiful Dora
29:44
Turn around, honey. Stretch your stuff. Let them look at you. Back those eyes, girl
29:51
Oh, yes. They are beautiful. Thank you. Listen, Dora made life worth living in the 90s
29:58
We have been in the kitchen together. through thick and thin. We've laughed together, we've cried together
30:06
You know, Dora, and I've done this dish so many times on the show
30:12
but this is the dish that we have to do again today
30:16
because it's the dish that put us on the map, isn't it? It sure did. And what dish is that, Dora
30:21
Fried chicken. Fried chicken. Oh, it's fried chicken. All right. Oh, Dora
30:29
Oh, thank you. Wash your hands, darling. You are much too pretty to cook today
30:35
Oh, thank you. We have looked like hell. Never looked like this in the kitchen. No, we have looked like hell in the kitchen, haven't we? Okay
30:42
I'm telling you, Dora and I had some days together. Now, Dora, if you've ever been to the Lady and Sons
30:49
you might have seen Dora around there, but there's a good chance that you didn't
30:54
Right. Because Dora is in the kitchen. She is the head woman
30:59
When I'm not there standing over that pot, and I know Dora's got her toe in it, all is well
31:07
All is well with the world. Yes. Well, Dora, let's show them how we made that fried chicken
31:13
Okay, roll my sleeves. All right, we got our chicken pieces over here. We've got our house seasoning
31:19
All right, so you want to show them how we season our chicken? Okay, sure
31:23
And we season our chicken, y'all, early in the day, and we put it in big old bus tubs
31:27
because we want that chicken to drink up all that seasoning. And by the time it hits y'all's lips, we want you to say
31:36
great time of day, I think that's the best chicken I've ever eaten
31:41
And Dora knows how to deliver. Okay. How long have you and I been together, Dora
31:45
16 years. 16 years. We've been together 16 years? Yes. And we still love each other, don't we
31:52
Yes, we do. And you know what? If you could still love me after everything we went through
31:57
Oh, yes. You one heck of a woman in my book, baby. Thank you, Paula
32:04
All right. Now, I've gotten our eggs beat up. And don't be afeard
32:12
That was hot sauce I put in there. Yeah. But it's not going to be hot
32:18
It's going to have a great flavor. And we're going to dunk our chicken in this, into the flour, and then into the hot grease. Right
32:27
Dora, do you remember, it was probably 1993 or 1994. Okay. We were at the Best Western
32:36
Dora has been with me since the Best Western. Yeah. It was about 12 or 1230
32:41
Okay, baby, run that around in there, and we'll go ahead and drop this in the pot. One day at lunchtime, we were doing a pretty good lunch business then
32:49
Pretty good lunch, yes. They had found out about our buffet. So folks were coming from all over
32:54
And Dora came out of that kitchen She said Paula Deen did you forget to pay the gas bill
33:09
Yes, she did. She did. We didn't have no gas. All of our equipment in the kitchen was gas
33:19
Every last one of them. Every last piece. So tell them what you did, Dora, at 1230 on that afternoon
33:26
I was dropping chicken like I am now, and the fryer wasn't frying
33:31
And I'm like, something's wrong. And I checked the fryer. No pilot light
33:38
No, that can't be it. And I said, Paula, come here, come here
33:42
I said, the cast is off. She said, no. I said, yes, it is, because my chicken's not frying
33:47
It's not making any noise. That's what it makes is noise So tell them what you did Dora
33:53
I went over to Holiday Inn You threw that bucket Of bus tub of chicken
33:58
In the back of her car In the back Ran upstairs Asked them
34:04
I said we were in a bad bad predicament I said could we please
34:09
Fry some chicken over here And they were so sweet They let me come in and fry the chicken
34:15
And Bobby and Jamie picking up Taking it back to the hotel. Well, I quickly got the gas bill paid, didn't I, Dora
34:24
Right, you did. And nobody knew what was going on. I mean, all that we went through was terrible, but they didn't know nothing
34:32
They just caught it with the best chicken in the house. That we was cooking without gas
34:36
Okay. Beautiful. Doesn't this look beautiful? It does. We know we can fry some chicken, don't we, girl
34:44
Oh, yes. But what Dora did that day, I knew that whatever I was going to do in the future in the restaurant business, whatever battle I was going to fight, I wanted Dora Charles by my side because she was one hell of a woman
35:00
Thank you. Thank you. Yeah. Come on. Do y'all want to taste the chicken
35:09
Taste the chicken. Girls, bring up some chicken. Listen, y'all enjoy your chicken
35:19
because we're not done yet. We're going to move into 2000, the year 2000
35:26
Who would ever have thought it had gotten here? We'll see y'all back in a minute
35:30
Don't go anywhere. Don't go anywhere. Coming up, y'all, it's Sweet Baby Jack Carrot Day
35:45
Welcome back! Welcome back, y'all
35:58
I have had such a good time walking through the decades with y today But you know what There ain no time like the present
36:09
It ain't getting older, it's getting better. One of the best things in the whole entire world happened to me in the 2000s
36:21
I became a grandmother. I became a grandmother. Y'all, I'm fixing to celebrate my third wedding anniversary
36:34
I told my husband, Michael, I said, you know, I don't think we're going to have any grandchildren
36:40
I don't think it's going to happen, so why don't you and I try to get pregnant
36:46
So thank goodness Jamie and Brooke came through for me, And they put into my arms on August the 21st, 2006, the most precious little boy named Jack
37:01
I had finally hit the jackpot. I hit the jackpot. So I feel like it's real fitting today to finish off our decade show by making a cake in honor of my precious Jack
37:17
We're going to make a sweet baby jack carrot cake. To make this cake, it's so easy, y'all
37:25
I've got flour. I've got self-rising flour. I've got cinnamon. I've got sugar
37:34
And this is not one of those delicate cakes that you have to be careful with
37:39
You can just get this mixed together in about two minutes. So I'm just going to stir together my dry ingredients
37:48
I've got four eggs. And I've got two four-ounce jars of baby food carrots for my sweet little baby Jack
37:59
And they won't let me feed him this sort of stuff yet. And to this, what makes this cake so good is the oil in it, a cup and a half of oil
38:12
And this is going to be the most moist cake between the baby carrots and the vegetable oil that I'm putting in
38:20
Now, all we have to do is just blend these together until it's kind of smooth
38:26
And that'll take about two minutes. Now, over here, I've got three cake pans that have been greased and dusted with flour
38:35
Because we don't want our sweet baby jack cakes to stick. So, look at that
38:41
coming together just like that. Hey, buddy, well, come on. Thank you, Bobby
38:50
You mixed it so quiet I couldn even get it back there I know it Those are mixed up Now what I want you to do is just divide this between the cake layers okay This is ready Now you can eyeball it but I like to take some kind of
39:07
maybe just a measuring cup or something and just scoop it in
39:12
so that I'll know that each cake pan is going to have as close to the right amount
39:18
Because when you cut your cake, you don't want one layer this big and another layer this big
39:23
So, son, just make sure those are even. Now, you know what I think that makes carrot cake so stinking good
39:31
That icing, honey. The icing, that cream cheese icing is so good
39:39
And it's so simple to make. It's nothing but cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla
39:45
Nuts if you like it. And I've already got it mixed up
39:49
And, son, while you're getting your layers ready for the oven, Got one ready
39:56
The cake fairy's been. Now, we're going to put that in a 325-degree oven
40:05
and we're going to let that bake for, oh, gosh, probably about 25 minutes
40:10
All right. All right, now I'm going to put just a little bit of cream cheese right there
40:18
Oh, my, my, my. Mommy's sweating. All right. So that little bit of frosting is going to act as a glue so it won't move around so easily
40:34
I think you're going to need a little extra sugar with that, Mama. Why? Honey, this cake's pretty..
40:42
Look at his shirt. Jack
40:55
Hey. Hey, Jack. Say hey, big mama. No. Do you like a shirt
41:02
Oh, I love butter. Y'all see your shirt? I love butter, it says. Jack
41:09
Y'all, this is my son Jack and my wife Brooke. Come to your grandmama
41:20
So much for baking cakes. Come to your grandmama. If you're not a grandma yet
41:32
I can't wait for it to happen to you because there's nothing like it
41:39
I'd have had you first, Sonny boy, if I'd just known. I hope y'all have had a great time with me today
41:48
I've certainly had a wonderful time with y'all, and I'll see you when I see you
41:54
Tell him bye, Jack
