Today on Paula's Party, y'all, it's my favorite recipes from every decade
0:07
And I'm going to be dressing the part for the 50s, 60s
0:11
70s, 80s through the day. We're going retro with a cheesy fondue surprise
0:17
We always suspected that Mike was cheesy. I got proof. My young'un Bobby Dean is going to be dropping in
0:22
for his favorite childhood dish. His goulash, y'all. And another famous son, y'all, straight out of the 70s
0:31
dishes about his romance with a Brady Bunch co-star. Was that your first kiss
0:36
Yes, it was. He was very Brady. And his carrot cake, y'all, for my grandson Jack's TV debut
0:44
So y'all pick your favorite decade, because we're going to go back in time
0:49
Let's party! It's so great to be here with y'all today
1:25
We're going to have such a fun party today. Y'all sit down and get comfortable
1:32
We're going to be walking through the decades today. Are you like me
1:37
Do you taste a certain food and associate a time period in your life
1:43
So that's what we're going to do today. We're going to walk down memory lane through all of the decades
1:49
and we're going to be fixing the food that I associate with that time period
1:55
Does that sound fun? Let's party. Y'all, I forgot something
2:07
Y'all sit right here. I'll be right back. It's the 50s, y'all
2:20
Get on, Patterson. Get on. Get them! Get them! Paddle! Paddle
2:38
I'm 13 again. I know it. You love it. Do you love my poodle skirt
2:46
Y'all, over here, I've got two of my oldest and dearest friends
2:51
Diane and Darlene Tedder. All right, let's start the 50s, y'all. You ready
3:02
I'm going to be making my mama's old-fashioned banana pudding. Now, I've got some sugar
3:11
And I've got... some cornstarch. Now I'm going to add my milk, and you see I've added my dry ingredients because I don't want it to clump up my custard, so
3:30
And in a minute, we're going to temper our eggs and put our eggs in there
3:35
All right, so who's got something to say? So this recipe that you're making, what memories does it bring back for you from your childhood
3:43
Oh, my goodness, it brings back so many memories because this is one of the things that my mother would have waiting on the counter when school was out
3:55
And Bubba, Diane, Darlene, and I, we'd all troop in the house and dig into that warm bowl of banana pudding, and you were just in heaven
4:06
All right, now, y'all, I'm fixing to temper our eggs because our custard is thick
4:12
So temper just means to heat up slowly. Because when we add our eggs, we don't want them to be scrambled
4:21
You know, we don't want scrambled eggs in our custard. All right
4:25
The last step is to add butter and vanilla. Now we're going to let this cool
4:31
And I've got some that's cooled down. All right. So all we're going to do is layer our vanilla wafers, our bananas, and our custard together
4:45
Kitchen fairies. Don't you love a kitchen fairy? Diane, come up here and taste this custard
4:53
I was hoping you'd say that. Y'all remember all the fudge we used to make
5:00
Yeah, taste that. Okay. All right. Well, Diane's tasting to make sure that's serving our memories correctly
5:07
Mm, Paula. Isn't it yummy? Mm, darling. All right, I'm going to come over here, and I'm going to slide our meringue
5:14
because Mama always, always put meringue on our banana pudding. Mm-hmm. And you know back then, Diane, we could eat anything we wanted
5:24
and it wouldn't show up on our hips. I know. We were both so skinny back then
5:28
We were so skinny. All right, now we're just going to put this in the oven, brown it off, and look
5:38
I feel like, I feel like Kari Hires is in the house
5:42
Oh, my sister. My mama. Sweetest woman. Come on up here. You dig in
5:48
Okay. Oh, come on, get your bite. All right. Mmm. Mmm, mmm, mmm. Mmm
5:56
Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Y'all don't go anywhere
6:02
We're just now leaving the 50s. The good times were in the 60s
6:08
See you back in a minute. Up next, it's the 60s, y'all, with chocolate and cheese fondue
6:19
And later, one of the Brady Bunch boys is going to help me cook up some meat and potatoes for the 70s
6:26
Step into my kitchen, said the spider to the fly. Music Music Music Music Music Music Music Music Music
6:50
Listen y'all out there in TV Land, in case you've just tuned in, no
6:56
I am not a drag queen Today's party, we're walking through the decades
7:03
And in case you don't realize what decade I'm in, I'm in the 60s
7:08
Everybody, you notice it's got a fondue pot on your table. We're fixing a fondue
7:18
We're gonna have a sweet fondue and we're gonna have a savory fondue
7:24
So let get started Yeah started You like it Bill Okay I gonna start by heating up my saucepan because the
7:47
The first fondue is going to be that sweet fondue, a chocolate fondue
7:54
Now, I got a cup of cream here. Now, we're not going to let our cream come to a boil
8:01
We want it to just simmer and get hot. All right, now I'm going to dump in my chocolate
8:10
Now, you can use any kind of chocolate that you like. If you love milk chocolate the way I love milk chocolate, use that
8:18
It'll be kind of like eating a melted candy bar, you know
8:25
All right. We've got a little Grand Marnier. All right
8:36
Our chocolate's nice and melted. Doesn't that look good, y'all? Well, now listen, y'all got the same thing in your pot
8:47
Y'all start eating. Mmm, mmm. Isn't that good, y'all? Let's move on to our savory pot now
9:00
I've got 2 1⁄2 cups of wine. And there again, we don't want that to come to a bowl
9:09
Now, I've got two different kind of cheeses right here. I've got a Gruyere and I've got a Swiss
9:16
I've got a couple of tablespoons, two or three tablespoons of flour
9:21
All right. Now, I'm going to slowly drop in my cheese into the wine
9:30
Do y'all know when the last time I wore a Mihai White pleather boots
9:35
I went to see the man of my dreams. I went to my sewing machine
9:42
I made me a hot pants outfit. Went and bought me some pleather boots
9:49
And I said, if he gets a glimpse of me, it is all over
9:53
And I'm going to be Mrs. Elvis. But when I got there with my outfit on and my hair teased out to
10:03
Hey, hi, Georgia. I was a little disappointed where my seat was
10:10
It was the last seat in the tip top of this arena
10:16
I had to watch him through binoculars. All that sewing I had done was for naught
10:25
But I got to see Elvis. All right, our cheese is melting
10:29
I've got a little car... Kersh? You know that cherry liqueur? Oh, my good
10:40
All right, so here we go. It's a melting, y'all. You know what
10:46
And look at this pot. If that's a cheesy, I'm a kangaroo
10:51
I need more cheese, please. I'm trying to make a cheese fondue, not a..
10:58
Hey, y'all. Oh, my gracious. Hey, look at that. Hey, y'all. Hey, everybody
11:09
Hey, Mom. Has your mama embarrassed you, Mom? Have I embarrassed you
11:17
There's a couple things. A couple things. You know, we always suspected that Mike was cheesy
11:20
I got proof. He is a cheese hair. That's a tight dress
11:26
Look at them shoes. Oh, listen, son. one time your mama was hot
11:32
Is this what you... It just ain't today. I was born in the 60s
11:36
Is this what you looked like when I was born? No, I swear I did not. You got a question, honey
11:45
I've got a question. I have two little boys, ages three and four, and I am working very hard at creating memories
11:50
with them in the kitchen. Do you have any fond memories of specific recipes
11:54
or things that I might be able to try at home? You know what? Mom gave me a cookbook when I was
11:59
Six or seven years old, and it was the kids' cookbook. I'm grating a little fresh nutmeg in our cheese
12:05
And so when I could pull my cookbook out and Mom and I would do something together
12:10
that was just the greatest. If my house, God forbid, caught on fire, that'd be one of the things I'd have to grab
12:15
Sweet. All right. I'm trying to get you a spear, baby. Is that a peach wrapped in bacon
12:26
He, he, he, he, he. Yes. Only on Paula's party, and I got to try one
12:33
Uh-huh. Where in the world did you think of this? Constantly thinking, baby, constantly thinking
12:47
Your mama's mind is like a steel trap. Old and rusty. Y'all stay tuned, the 70s are coming up. Whoa! Ooh
12:59
Coming up, it's the 70s, y'all, with a big Brady Bunch surprise
13:04
And later, we're going 80s, y'all, and I'm breakdancing over my son's favorite dish
13:24
It's the 70s, y'all! And I'm the dancing queen! Y'all, I could have easily worn this outfit in the 70s
13:34
because I was this skinny. Let me tell you, this is supposed to wrap around
13:39
and tie in the back. Well, listen, without any further ado, y'all think for a second
13:49
What was your favorite show in the 70s? The Brady Bunch! Yes, would y'all like to meet the cutest star ever of the Brady Bunch? much
14:03
Preston for Knight, come on out! Peter Brady, y'all
14:16
Thank you very much. It's so exciting to meet you. Oh, no, no, no, no, baby
14:23
And look at you. I'm the one excited. I can't believe I have to meet you showing up in this outfit
14:27
I think Florence wore that. Come on back here in my kitchen
14:33
Step into my kitchen, said the spider to the fly. Oh, my goodness, I don't want to cook
14:42
What do you want to do? I'm standing here with Peter looking like a damn fool
14:48
No, you look great. All right in the 70s y we were so dirt poor that we didn get steak very often But I would make what I called a poor man filet mignon It just ground beef wrapped in bacon with mashed potatoes What was it like being on the set of the Brave Bunch
15:06
Make us two big-o... Okay, what was it like? Did it screw you up
15:11
No, in fact, I think... I think in my case, it actually helped
15:15
because we had a really wholesome environment to work in. As a matter of fact, it was conducive to children
15:23
All right, so we're just going to salt these a little bit. That's your special salt
15:26
What is in your special salt? Yeah, this is my house seasoning. Look at you go. It's salt, pepper, and garlic powder
15:32
All right, now we got some bacon over here that you see it's still limp
15:36
because we didn't want to cook it crisp. Look at this. I can't hardly move my arms
15:42
This outfit's so little. That color is really becoming on you. Oh, good
15:46
Well, thank you. You look like an orange blossom. So I'm... I am so in heat
15:55
Or, I mean, I'm so in love. I am so in love
15:59
All right, so, now, I understand that you just got married. I did
16:04
Can she cook? She said she could. Did she lie? She doesn't have any interest in the kitchen
16:12
She doesn't like certain things, and she won't try certain things. And I like everything
16:16
That's too bad, because you should always at least try something. Before you don't like it
16:21
See, that's why you and I should have been together. All right
16:27
We're going to put your little butter in there. Now, I want you to saute mushrooms, onions, chives, garlic
16:36
I can do that. Put this in, pour in the wine, and we're going to let it reduce, okay
16:40
Gotcha, gotcha. Let me ask you this, Chris. Did you have a crush on anybody
16:44
I was the object of someone else's crush. For as many years as we did the show, Eve had a crush on me for five years
16:51
You mean Jan, your sister on the show? Yeah, she had a lot of patience
16:55
Because right around the end of our run, our fifth season, I started to become aware of women
17:01
You were dumb to it. You were dumb to the crush. I was just more interested in, you know, doing, you know, boy things
17:08
So I showed a little affection back, you know, a little crush. We all, you know, sort of paired up
17:12
Did y'all kiss? Yes. Was that your first kiss? Yes. Yes. That was my first kiss
17:22
Was it really? I forgot the wine. I'm getting so upset here
17:29
Actually, the big story is, and one of my favorite experiences from doing the Brainy Blanch was not in front of the camera
17:34
It was when we all went over to England on the QE2
17:38
And Barry and I shared a bunk or a cabin, and Maureen and Eve shared a cabin
17:42
and one night Eve engineered Maureen to be out of their room
17:49
and I was to go to their room and that's when I had my first kiss
17:54
Oh, I'm so upset. And you went to her cabin? Yes, I went to her cabin
17:59
It was a nice trip. I'm just starting to know. I was too much
18:08
No, no. It never happened. It was sweet and innocent. Yes, it was. It was very Brady
18:14
Very Brady. Very Brady. Very Brady. Well, let me ask you this
18:19
Could Alice cook your housekeeper? The meals that we ate at that table were prepared by Irving, our prop man
18:27
And he was an excellent cook. I never saw Andy cook. She seemed like she knew what the utensils were for in the kitchen
18:35
Oh, well, good. You know, so. You are precious. Oh, you're sweet
18:39
Well, get our plate, Chris. Okay. Look at this. Look at our full man's filet
18:44
It looks just like full man's filet, doesn't it? Put your one on a plate
18:51
Now, I want to give you... Is this just regular ground beef or lean ground beef
18:55
I actually like a 70-30. That means it's 70% meat, 30% fat
19:01
Oops! Sorry, you just flustered me so much. We're going to make your potatoes
19:09
more beautiful. Mmm, mmm. This is what my children and I were eating when we would sit in front of that TV and watch the Brady Bunch
19:25
Pass us a fork, baby. My pleasure. Well, I just... Mmm. Is it good
19:32
Oh. You know, I can't stand the thoughts of our time being over
19:38
Would you like to go into the 80s with me? Certainly. You're a person
19:45
I can remember those. You can remember those. Thank you, Prius. Don't go anywhere
19:53
He's going to go into the 80s with me. Coming up, it's the 80s, y'all, with Bobby's goulash
20:06
Welcome back, y'all. So far today on Paula's Party, we're walking through the decades just one recipe at a time
20:14
I kick things off with my mama's banana pudding from the 50s
20:18
Mmm. My son Jamie surprised me, y'all, with something really cheesy for our 60s fondue feast
20:27
Oh, my gracious. And Peter from the Brady Bunch stopped by to make a meat and potatoes dinner right out of the 70s
20:35
And still to come, y'all, I'm making an old recipe new again
20:40
and I'm naming it after my baby grandson, Jack. I want to get physical
21:02
It's the 80s, y'all! We're flash dancing through the 80s. I'm having a flashback
21:11
Perfect. Chris, I'm so glad you agreed to stay with me and come back
21:17
because you remind me so much of another young man that's in my life
21:22
Okay. And that's my youngest son, Bobby. Bobby? I want y'all to meet each other
21:27
Bobby Dean! I'm on my way
21:39
Take your time. This is very Olivia Newton-John. Isn't it great? How are you
21:44
It's so great to see you. Well, I thought I was that other girl. What's her name? Jennifer Beal. Jennifer Beal
21:48
I thought I was Jennifer Beal. The flash dance thing? Yeah. You need a chair and a bucket of water
21:52
You didn't recognize me doing her dance? Oh, I missed that. Show me
21:57
Show me. Show me. Let's see it. That's exactly it. Have you met my mom
22:02
I have. Y'all look a lot alike. Do we look like that
22:07
We got the same height thing. And y'all are extremely tall. Extremely good looking
22:14
Oh, all right. Yes. Listen, y'all get together. I'm going to be over here doing my flash dance
22:20
Well this is it looks like what you got going is goulash which was my favorite thing I don know if you ate this growing up but this was my favorite thing as a kid And in fact mom still makes this for me every year on my birthday You know this is the way my mother taught me to mix this together
22:35
And this is what you used to cook it in, too. Yeah, those are great. Bobby loved it
22:40
Loved it. This is the dish that taught me how to overeat. Yeah. Well, so far, it's not bad for you
22:46
Oh, we'll get it. And she started. And two, you know what
22:50
We ain't started yet, Peter. All right, Bobby. I watched you. Honey
22:55
I watched you growing up. And you chopped that garlic and y'all chat amongst yourselves
22:59
And I've got some favorite episodes. Do you get sick of hearing about the Brady Brunch and people asking you about it
23:05
No, I don't. In fact, it brings me back. So you have any questions
23:09
Well, comments. I mean, I remember a couple episodes. One was that I love the episode with the frogs and the pizza, the date
23:18
Where you guys are in the convertible, you're at the movie. Are you break dancing
23:23
Yeah, she's break dancing. i'm break dancing this is the first completely you look like a roach
23:44
hey bobby your mom's one of a kind you did not get break dance did you
23:49
they call it you're going to break something doing that dance too i think i already did i i liked the episode where y'all were in the convertible and there were all
23:58
the frogs and the pizza and the frogs jumping all over the car y'all remember all this stuff i know
24:03
and and that was like one of my favorite episodes why because of the frogs i got to use those against
24:08
maureen marcia marcia she hated i put a we had a little we had a school room we had a little desk
24:13
that had lift tops i presented a great opportunity to hide a frog scared the mess out of it yeah i
24:19
I got in big trouble. I also remember the fake mustache. Peter wearing the fake mustache
24:26
Oh, yeah. I remember that one. And let's see. You protecting Cindy from the kid
24:32
Cindy had the list and the kid was making fun of her. There was some violence on the Brady Bunch. There was some violence
24:35
What are you hinting? Golly, what else? I loved it when y'all went to Hawaii. I loved it when y'all went to the Grand Canyon and got put in jail
24:42
Y'all remember this? Yeah, Jim Bacchus. The Brady's in jail? Jim Bacchus, that's right
24:46
In Hawaii with Vincent Price. What a life you grew up. Yeah, it was, you know, it's hard to appreciate until looking back on it how, you know, unique and special it actually was
24:55
All right, this is so far. This looks like spaghetti sauce. Well, it's very much like it
24:59
It absolutely does, Peter. So far. I meant Peter. I meant Chris
25:04
It's all right. You've had 35 years of me being Peter. Just became Chris today
25:09
I want you to add Italian seasoning, bay leaf, soy sauce, cow seasoning, seasoning salt
25:22
All the bay leaves? Three bay leaves? All of them. Just dump, baby. Mama, I don't remember
25:27
Italian seasoning. It looks like a little oregano, a little thyme maybe. Uh-huh. Italian seasoning
25:31
It's got your rosemary. It's got your thyme. It's got your... All them Italian seasonings
25:38
All of them. all of it, honey. Is that about a tablespoon? I think you're
25:43
exactly on the money. Maybe another one. This headband is squeezing my brain so hard
25:47
I can't really think. Is this one of those dishes that the longer
25:51
it cooks, the better it becomes? Absolutely. Absolutely. Because I remember this being better the next day
25:57
It's like pizza. If I left it. Like spaghetti sauce, it's better the next day
26:01
So what we're going to do now is we would let this simmer
26:05
and I add kind of like water. Kind of like water or water? It really is water. Okay. It's not the dry stuff
26:14
It's not the dry stuff. So what I do is I keep me a pitcher of water by my stove
26:21
and so I add water as I need it. Now, there's a couple of ways you can do your macaroni noodles
26:27
You can cook those in a separate pot of boiling water and dump them in at the very last or about
26:34
30 minutes out on your pot of goulash. Throw them in with you. You can throw them in here
26:38
I cooked my, last time I tried to do this, I cooked it separately. Mine just wasn't very good
26:43
It came out a whole lot more like a chili. Son. I know. I was ashamed
26:47
You know what it was? The water. It must have been. It was the water. Because I didn't add any. You didn't add any water
26:51
Didn't add any water. I figured all the tomato sauce I put in there was
26:55
I gave you the recipe. I got in the kitchen one day, son. I formulated the recipe and I gave it. Lies
27:01
I did. I did. I did. I did. All right. Now, after it, look up there
27:08
Ooh, that's the goulash. That's the goulash, ain't it, honey? I got to taste that
27:13
Let me give you a little bit. Mm. That is the goulash that I remember growing up as a kid
27:17
Isn't it great? This is excellent. And it will. It'll be better the next day. And I'll throw together a green salad and some garlic bread, some French bread
27:26
And, honey, we didn't know he was poor. We didn't know he was poor
27:31
No, this is high cotton right here. That's not gotten, baby. It's really, really easy
27:35
And for some reason, I can't do it. I've had you for the 70s, and I've had you for the 80s
27:42
but I've got to move on, baby. I'm not going to be there for the 90s
27:46
You've outgrown me! All right, well, before... Just slip into my dressing room, baby
27:52
I'll wait for you. Beforehand. I have to infringe on you and ask one more thing
27:56
What's that? A little thing that you said in one episode? Your favorite food was... Oh, my favorite food was..
28:01
pork chops and apple chops. We'll be back. We're on to the 90s
28:10
Don't leave our party, y'all. Up next, the 90s dish that put mama on the mat
28:24
And later, the sweetest surprise, my little grandson, Jack. Time flies when you're having fun, honey
28:49
It truly does. I am moving further and further away from my youth
28:56
It's the 90s. Now, I have to tell you, the 90s were tough
29:01
Those were tough years. A lot happened for me. But one of the best things in the whole world happened for me in the 90s
29:12
A woman came into my life that was going to be my soul sister
29:18
And she made every day for me getting up a heck of a lot easier
29:25
The head cook, the queen of the kitchen at the Lady and Sons, Dora! Dora
29:31
Dora Charles! Look! Beautiful Dora
29:42
Turn around, honey, stretch your stuff. Let them look at you. Back those eyes, girl
29:49
Oh, yes. They are beautiful. Thank you. Listen, Dora made life worth living in the 90s
29:56
We have been in the kitchen together through thick and thin. We've laughed together, we've cried together
30:04
You know, Dora, and I've done this dish so many times on the show
30:10
but this is the dish that we have to do again today
30:14
because it's the dish that put us on the map, isn't it? It sure did. And what dish is that, Dora
30:19
Fried chicken. Fried chicken. All the fried chicken. All right. Oh, Dora
30:27
Oh, thank you. Wash your hands, darling. You are much too pretty to cook today
30:33
Oh, thank you. We have looked like hell. Never looked like this in the kitchen. No, we have looked like hell in the kitchen. Okay
30:40
I'm telling you, Dora and I had some days together. Now, Dora, if you've ever been to the Lady and Sons
30:47
you might have seen Dora around there, but there's a good chance that you didn't. Right
30:52
Because Dora is in the kitchen. She is the head woman. when I'm not there standing over that pot
30:59
and I know Dora's got her toe in it, all is well
31:05
All is well with the world. Yes. Well, Dora, let's show them how we made that fried chicken
31:11
Okay, roll my sleeves. All right, we got our chicken pieces over here. We've got our house seasoning
31:17
All right, so you want to show them how we season our chicken? Okay, sure
31:21
And we season our chicken, y'all, early in the day, and we put it in big old bus tubs
31:26
because we want that chicken to drink up all that seasoning. And by the time it hits y'all's lips
31:33
we want you to say, great time of day. I think that's the best chicken I've ever eaten
31:39
And Dora knows how to deliver. Okay. How long have you and I been together, Dora
31:43
16 years. 16 years. We've been together 16 years? Yes. And we still love each other, don't we
31:50
Yes, we do. And you know what? If you could still love me after everything we went through
31:55
Oh, yes. You one heck of a woman in my book, baby. Thank you, Paula
32:02
All right. Now, I've gotten our eggs beat up. And don't be afeard
32:10
That was hot sauce I put in there. Yeah. But it's not going to be hot
32:16
It's going to have a great flavor. And we're going to dunk our chicken in this, into the flour, and then into the hot grease. Right
32:25
Dora, do you remember, it was probably 1993 or 1994. Okay. We were at the Best Western
32:34
Dora has been with me since the Best Western. Yeah. It was about 12 or 12.30
32:39
Okay, baby, run that around in there, and we'll go ahead and drop this in the pot. One day at lunchtime, we were doing a pretty good lunch business
32:46
Pretty good lunch, yes. They had found out about our buffet. So folks were coming from all over
32:52
And Dora came out of that kitchen. She said Paula Deen did you forget to pay the gas bill Yes she did
33:07
She did. We didn't have no gas. All of our equipment in the kitchen was gas
33:16
Every last one of them. Every last piece. So tell them what you did, Dora, at 1230 on that afternoon
33:24
I was dropping chicken like I am now, and the fryer wasn't frying
33:29
And I'm like, something's wrong. And I checked the fryer. No pile of light
33:36
No, that can't be it. And I said, Paula, come here, come here
33:40
I said, the gas is off. She said, no. I said, yes, it is, because my chicken's not frying
33:45
It's not making any noise. That's what it makes, it's noise. So tell them what you did, Dora
33:51
I went over to Holiday Inn. You threw that bucket of bus tub of chicken in the back of her car
33:58
In the back. Ran upstairs, asked them. I said, we were in a bad, bad predicament
34:05
I said, could we please fry some chicken over here? And they were so sweet
34:11
They did. They let me come in and fry the chicken. And Bobby and Jamie picking up, taking it back to the hotel
34:19
Well, I quickly got the gas bill paid, didn't I? Right. You did
34:24
And nobody knew what was going on. I mean, all that we went through was terrible, but they didn't know nothing
34:30
They just caught up with the best chicken in the house. That we were cooking without gas
34:34
Okay. Beautiful. Doesn't this look beautiful? It does. We know we can fry some chicken, don't we, girl
34:42
Oh, yes. But what Dora did that day, I knew that whatever I was going to do in the future, in the restaurant business
34:50
whatever battle I was going to fight, I wanted Dora Charles by my side because she was one hell of a woman
34:58
Thank you. Thank you. Yeah, come on. Do y'all want to taste the chicken
35:07
Taste the chicken. Girls, bring out some chicken. Listen, y'all enjoy your chicken because we're not done yet
35:18
We're gonna move into 2000, the year 2000. Who would ever have thought it had gotten here
35:26
We'll see y'all back in a minute. Don't go anywhere. Coming up, y'all, it's Sweet Baby Jack Carrot Day
35:38
Welcome back! Welcome back, y'all
35:52
I have had such a good time walking through the decades with y today But you know what There ain no time like the present
36:07
It ain't getting older, it's getting better. One of the best things in the whole entire world happened to me in the 2000s
36:18
I became a grandmother. I became a grandmother. Y'all, I'm fixing to celebrate my third wedding anniversary
36:32
I told my husband, Michael, I said, You know, I don't think we're going to have any grandchildren
36:38
I don't think it's going to happen. So why don't you and I try to get pregnant
36:44
So thank goodness Jamie and Brooke came through for me. And they put into my arms on August the 21st, 2006, the most precious little boy named Jack
36:58
I had finally hit the jackpot. I hit the jackpot. So I feel like it's real fitting today to finish off our decade show by making a cake in honor of my precious Jack
37:14
we're gonna make a sweet baby jack carrot cake. To make this cake, it's so easy, y'all
37:23
I've got flour. I've got self-rising flour. I've got cinnamon. I've got sugar
37:32
And this is not one of those delicate cakes that you have to be careful with
37:37
You can just get this mixed together in about two minutes. So I'm just going to stir together my dry ingredients
37:45
I've got four eggs, and I've got two four-ounce jars of baby food carrots for my sweet little baby Jack
37:57
And they won't let me feed him this sort of stuff yet. And to this, what makes this cake so good is the oil in it, a cup and a half of oil
38:09
and this is going to be the most moist cake between the baby carrots and the vegetable oil that I'm putting in
38:18
Now all we have to do is just blend these together until it's kind of smooth, and that'll take about two minutes
38:26
Now over here I've got three cake pans that have been greased and dusted with flour
38:33
because we don't want our sweet baby jack cakes to stick. So look at that, it's coming together just like that
38:43
Hey, baby, well, come on. Thank you, Bobby. You mixed it so quiet, I couldn't even get it back there
38:49
I know it. Those are mixed up. Now what I want you to do is just divide this between the cake layers okay This is ready Now you can eyeball it but I like to take some kind of maybe just a measuring cup or something and just scoop it in so that I
39:10
know that each cake pan is going to have as close to the right amount, because when you cut your
39:16
cake, you don't want one layer this big and another layer this big. So, son, just make sure those are
39:22
even. Now you know what I think that makes carrot cake so stinking good? That icing
39:29
honey. The icing, that cream cheese icing is so good and it's so simple to make. It's
39:39
nothing but cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar and vanilla. Nuts if you like it. And
39:45
I've already got it mixed up. And son, while you're getting your layers ready for the oven
39:52
Got one ready? The cake fairy's been. Now we're going to put that in a 325 degree oven
40:02
and we're going to let that bake for, oh gosh, probably about 25 minutes
40:08
All right. All right, now I'm going to put just a little bit of cream cheese right there
40:16
Oh, my, my, my. Mommy's sweating. All right. So that little bit of frosting is going to act as a glue so it won't move around so easily
40:30
I think you're going to need a little extra sugar with that, Mama. Why
40:35
Honey, this cake's pretty. Look at his shirt. Jack. Hey
40:53
Hey, Jack. Say, hey, big mama. No. Do you like your shirt
40:59
Oh, I love butter. Y'all see your shirt? I love butter, it says. Jack
41:06
Y'all, this is my son, Jack, and my wife, Brooke. Come to your grandmama
41:18
So much for baking cakes. Come to your grandmama. If you're not a grandma yet, I can't wait for it to happen to you
41:32
Because there's nothing like it. I'd have had you first, sonny boy, if I'd just known
41:42
I hope y'all have had a great time with me today. I've certainly had a wonderful time with y'all
41:48
And I'll see you when I see you. Tell them bye, Jack
