Today on Powell's Party, y'all, it's my favorite recipes from every decade
0:08
And I'm gonna be dressing the part for the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s through the day
0:14
We're going retro with a cheesy fondue surprise. We always suspected that Mike was cheesy
0:20
I got proof. My youngin' Bobby Dean is gonna be dropping in for his favorite childhood dish
0:26
His goulash, y'all. y'all, and another famous son, y'all, straight out of the 70s, dishes about his romance
0:33
with a Brady Bunch co-star. Was that your first kiss? Yes, it was
0:38
It was very Brady. And his carrot cake, y'all, for my grandson, Jack
0:43
TV debut. So y'all pick your favorite decade, because we're gonna go back in time
0:50
Let's party! How are you
1:22
It's so great to be here with y'all today. We're going to have such a fun party today
1:29
Y'all sit down and get comfortable. We're going to be walking through the decades today
1:37
Are you like me? Do you taste a certain food and associate a time period in your life
1:43
So that's what we're going to do today. We're going to walk down memory lane through all of the decades
1:49
and we're going to be fixing the food that I associate with that time period
1:55
Does that sound fun? Let's party. Y'all, I forgot something
2:07
Y'all sit right here. I'll be right back. It's the 50s, y'all
2:21
Get on, Patterson. Get on. Get on! Get on! Paddle! Paddle
2:38
I'm 13 again. I know it. You love it. Do you love my poodle skirt
2:46
Y'all, over here, I've got two of my oldest and dearest friends
2:51
Diane and Darlene Tutter. All right, let's start the 50s, y'all. You ready
3:03
I'm going to be making my mama's old-fashioned banana pudding. Now, I've got some sugar, and I've got..
3:15
some cornstarch. Now I'm going to add my milk
3:25
And you see I've added my dry ingredients because I don't want it to clump up my custard
3:31
And in a minute, we're going to temper our eggs and put our eggs in there
3:35
All right, so who's got something to say? So this recipe that you're making, what memories does it bring back for you from your childhood
3:44
Oh, my goodness, it brings back so many memories. because this is one of the things that my mother would have waiting on the counter when school was out
3:55
And Bubba, Diane, Darlene, and I, we'd all troop in the house
3:59
and dig into that warm bowl of banana pudding, and you were just in heaven
4:07
All right, now, y'all, I'm fixing to temper our eggs because our custard is thick
4:12
So temper just means to heat up slowly. Because when we add our eggs, we don't want them to be scrambled
4:22
You know, we don't want scrambled eggs in our custard. All right
4:26
The last step is to add butter and vanilla. Now, we're going to let this cool
4:32
And I've got some that's cooled down. All right. So all we're going to do is layer our vanilla wafers, our bananas, and our custard together
4:45
Kitchen fairies. Don't you love a kitchen fairy? Diane, come up here and taste this custard
4:54
Ooh, I was hoping you'd say that. See if that brings back memories. Y'all remember all the fudge we used to make
5:00
Yeah, taste that. Okay. All right. Well, Diane's tasting to make sure that's serving our memories correctly
5:07
Mmm, Paula. Isn't it yummy? Mmm, darling. All right, I'm going to come over here, and I'm going to slide our meringue
5:14
because Mama always, always put meringue on our banana pudding. And you know, back then, Diane, we could eat anything we wanted
5:24
and it wouldn't show up on our hips. I know. We were both so skinny back then
5:29
We were so skinny. All right, now we're just going to put this in the oven
5:34
brown it off, and look! Woo! I feel like, I feel like Kari Hires is in the house
5:43
Oh, bless her. My mama. Sweetest woman. Come on up here. You dig in
5:48
Okay. Oh, come on. Get your bite. All right. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm
5:56
Mmm. Mmm. Y'all don't go anywhere. We're just now leaving the 50s
6:05
The good times were in the 60s. See you back in a minute
6:13
Up next, it's the 60s, y'all, with chocolate and cheese fondue. And later, one of the Brady Bunch boys
6:22
is gonna help me cook up some meat and potatoes for the 70s. Step into my kitchen, said the spider to the fly
6:29
Listen, y'all, out there in TV land
6:53
in case you've just tuned in, no, I am not a drag queen
6:59
Today's party, we're walking through the decades. And in case you don't realize what decade I'm in, I'm in the 60s
7:12
Everybody, you notice it's got a fondue pot on your table. We're fixing a fondue
7:19
We're going to have a sweet fondue, and we're going to have a savory fondue
7:24
So let's get started. You like it, Bill
7:42
Okay. I'm going to start by heating up my saucepan because the first fondue is going to be that sweet fondue
7:53
a chocolate fondue. Now, I've got a cup of cream here. Now, we're not going to let our cream come to a bowl
8:02
We want it to just simmer and get hot. All right, now I'm going to dump in my chocolate
8:10
Now, you can use any kind of chocolate that you like. If you love milk chocolate the way I love milk chocolate, use that
8:19
It'll be kind of like eating a melted candy bar, you know
8:26
All right. We've got a little Grand Marnier. All right
8:37
Our chocolate nice and melted Doesn that look good y Well now listen y got the same thing in your pot
8:47
Y'all start eating. Mmm, mmm. Isn't that good, y'all? Let's move on to our savory pot now
9:01
I've got two and a half cups of wine. And there again, we don't want that to come to a bowl
9:10
Now, I've got two different kind of cheeses right here. I've got a Gruyere and I've got a Swiss
9:16
I've got a couple of tablespoons, two or three tablespoons of flour
9:21
All right. Now, I'm going to slowly drop in my cheese into the wine
9:31
Do y'all know when the last time I wore a Neha White pleather boots
9:36
I went to see the man of my dreams. I went to my sewing machine
9:43
I made me a hot pants outfit. Went and bought me some pleather boots
9:50
And I said, if he gets a glimpse of me, it is all over
9:54
And I'm going to be Mrs. Elvis. But when I got there with my outfit on and my hair teased out to
10:04
Hey, hi, Georgia. I was a little disappointed where my seat was
10:10
It was the last seat in the tip top of this arena
10:16
I had to watch him through binoculars. All that sewing I had done was for naught
10:26
But I got to see Elvis. All right, our cheese is melting
10:31
I've got a little... You know, that cherry liqueur. Oh, my good
10:40
All right, so here we go. It's a melting, y'all. You know what
10:46
And look at this pot. If that's a cheesy, I'm a kangaroo
10:52
I need more cheese, please. I'm trying to make a cheese fondue, not a..
10:58
Hey, y'all. Oh, my gracious. Hey, guys. Hey, y'all. Hey, everybody
11:10
Hey, Mom. Has your mama embarrassed you, Mom? Have I embarrassed you
11:17
There's a couple things. A couple things. You know, we always suspected that Mike was cheesy
11:21
I got proof. He is a cheese hair. That's a tight dress
11:27
Look at them shoes. Oh, listen, son. One time your mama was hot
11:33
Is this what you... It just ain't today. I was born in the 60s
11:36
Is this what you looked like when I was born? No, I swear I did not. You got a question, honey
11:45
I've got a question. I have two little boys, ages three and four, and I am working very hard at creating memories with them in the kitchen
11:52
Do you have any fond memories of specific recipes or things that I might be able to try at home
11:57
You know what? Mom gave me a cookbook when I was six or seven years old, and it was the kids' cookbook
12:03
Y'all are great and a little fresh nutmeg and our cheese. And so when I could pull my cookbook out and Mom and I would do something together, that was just the greatest
12:12
If my house, God forbid, caught on fire, that would be one of the things I'd have to grab
12:16
Sweet. All right. I'm trying to get you a spear, baby. Is that a peach wrapped in bacon? Yes
12:31
Only on Paula's party, and I got to try one. Uh-huh. Where in the world did you think of this
12:41
Constantly thinking, baby, constantly thinking. Your mama's mind is like a steel trap
12:51
Old and rusty. Y'all stay tuned, the 70s are coming up. Woo
12:59
Coming up is the 70s, y'all, with a big Brady Bunch surprise
13:05
And later, we're going 80s, y'all, and I'm breakdancing over my son's favorite dish
13:22
It's the 70s, y'all, and I'm the dancing queen. Y'all, I could have easily worn this outfit in the 70s
13:35
because I was this skinny. Let me tell you, this is supposed to wrap around
13:40
and tie in the back. Well, listen, without any further ado, y'all think for a second
13:48
What was your favorite show in the 70s? The Brady Bunch! Yes
13:58
Would y'all like to meet the cutest star ever of the Brady Bunch
14:05
Christopher Knight! Come on out! Come on out! Peanut Brady, y'all
14:20
Thank you very much. It's so exciting to meet you. Oh, no, no, no, no, baby
14:24
And look at you. I'm the one excited. I can't believe I have to meet you showing up in this outfit
14:29
I think Florence wore that. Come on back here in my kitchen
14:33
Step into my kitchen, said the spider to the fly. Oh, my goodness, I don't want to cook
14:43
What do you want to do? Standing here with Peter, looking like a damn fool
14:49
No, you look great. All right, in the 70s, y'all, we were so dirt poor that we didn't get steak very often
14:58
But I would make what I called a poor man's filet mignon. It's just ground beef wrapped in bacon with mashed potatoes
15:05
What was it like being on the set of the Brave Bunch? Make us too big-o. Okay, what was it like
15:10
Did it screw you up? No, in fact, I think in my case it actually helped because we had a really wholesome environment to work in
15:21
As a matter of fact, it was conducive to children. All right, so we're just going to salt these a little bit
15:26
That's your special salt? What is in your special salt? Yeah, this is my house seasoning. Look at you go
15:31
It's salt, pepper, and garlic powder. All right, now we've got some bacon over here that you see it's still limp
15:37
because we didn't want to cook it crisp. Look at this. I can't hardly move my arms
15:43
This outfit's so little. That color is really becoming on you. Oh, good
15:47
Well, thank you. You look like an orange blossom. So, I'm... I am so in heat
15:55
Or, I mean, I'm so in love. I am so in love
16:00
All right, so, now, I understand that you just got married. I did
16:05
Can she cook? She said she could. Did she lie? She doesn't have any interest in the kitchen
16:12
She doesn't like certain things, and she won't try certain things, and I like everything
16:17
That's too bad, because you should always at least try something. Before you don't like it
16:22
That's why you and I should have been together. All right. We're going to put your little butter in there
16:29
Now, I want you to saute mushrooms, onions, chives, garlic. I can do that
16:37
Put this in, pour in the wine, and we're going to let it reduce, okay? Gotcha, gotcha
16:42
Let me ask you this, Chris. Did you have a crush on anybody? I was the object of someone else's crush for as many years as we did the show
16:50
Eve had a crush on me for five years. You mean Jan, your sister on the show
16:54
Yeah, she had a lot of patience. because right around the end of our run, our fifth season
17:00
I started to become aware of women. You were dumb to it. You were dumb to the crush
17:05
I was just more interested in, you know, doing boy things. So I showed a little affection back, you know, a little crush
17:11
We all, you know, sort of paired up. Did y'all kiss? Yes. Was that your first kiss Yes Yes That was my first kiss Was it really I forgot the wine I getting so upset here
17:30
Actually, the big story is, and one of my favorite experiences from doing the Brain Blanch was not in front of the camera
17:35
It was when we all went over to England on the QE2
17:39
And Barry and I shared a bunk, or a cabin, and Maureen and Eve shared a cabin
17:43
And one night, Eve engineered Maureen to be out of their room
17:50
And I was to go to their room. And that's when I had my first kiss
17:55
Oh, I'm so upset. And you went to her cabin? Yes, I went to her cabin
18:00
It was a nice trip. I just got to know. No, no
18:10
And it never happened. It was sweet and innocent. Yes, it was
18:13
It was very Brady. Very Brady. Very Brady. Very Brady. Well, let me ask you this
18:20
Could Alice cook your housekeeper? The meals that we ate at that table were prepared by Irving, our prop man
18:28
And he was an excellent cook. I never saw Anne be cooked
18:33
She seemed like she knew what the utensils were for in the kitchen. Oh, well, good. You know, so
18:38
You are precious. Oh, you're sweet. Well, get our plate, Chris. Oh, okay
18:42
Look at this. Look at our full man's fillet. It looks just like full man's fillet, doesn't it
18:48
Put your one on a plate. Now I want to give you..
18:53
Is this just regular ground beef or is it lean ground beef? I actually like like a 70-30
18:58
That means it's 70% meat, 30% fat. Oops. Sorry, you just flustered me so much
19:08
We're going to make your potatoes more beautiful. Mm-mm. This is what my children and I were eating when we would sit in front of that TV and watch the Brady Bunch
19:26
Pass us a fork, baby. My pleasure. Well, I just... Mm-mm. Is it good
19:33
Oh. You know, I can't stand the thoughts of our time being over
19:39
Would you like to go into the 80s with me? Certainly. you're a precious
19:46
I can remember those you can remember those thank you Chris don't go anywhere
19:53
he's gonna go into the 80's with me coming up it's the 80's y'all
19:58
with Bobby's Goulash welcome back y'all
20:09
so far today on Paula's Party We're walking through the decades just one recipe at a time
20:16
I kick things off with my mama's banana pudding from the 50s
20:22
My son Jamie surprised me, y'all, with something really cheesy for our 60s fondue feast
20:30
And Peter from the Brady Bunch stopped by to make a meat and potatoes dinner right out of the 70s
20:37
And still to come, y'all, I'm making an old recipe new again
20:41
And I'm naming it after my baby grandson, Jack. I want to get physical
20:56
Get physical! It's the 80s, y'all
21:07
We're flash dancing through the 80s. I'm having a flashback. Perfect. Chris, I'm so glad you agreed to stay with me and come back
21:19
because you remind me so much of another young man that's in my life
21:24
And that's my youngest son, Bobby. Bobby? I want y'all to meet each other
21:29
Bobby Dean! I'm on my way
21:40
take your time this is very this is very Olivia Olivia Newton John isn't it great how are you
21:46
it's so great I thought I was that other girl what's her name Jennifer Beale I thought I was
21:50
the flash dance thing yeah you need a chair and a bucket of water you didn't recognize me
21:55
you didn't recognize me doing her dance oh I missed that show me show me show me let's see it
22:00
that's exactly it have you met have you met my mom I have y'all look y'all look a lot of like
22:07
We're looking like that. We got the same height thing. Extremely tall
22:12
Extremely tall. Extremely good looking. Oh, all right. Yes. Listen, y'all get together
22:19
I'm going to be over here doing my flash dancing. Well, this is, it looks like what you got going is goulash, which was my favorite thing
22:27
I don't know if you ate this growing up, but this was my favorite thing as a kid. And in fact, mom still makes this for me every year on my birthday
22:34
You know, this is the way my mother taught me to mix this together. And this is what you used to cook it in, too
22:39
Yeah, those are great. Bobby loved it. Loved it. This is the dish that taught me how to overeat
22:45
Well, so far, it's not bad for you. It's just, you know. Oh, we'll get there. And we ain't started
22:51
And two, you know what? We ain't started yet, Peter. All right, Bobby. I watched you
22:56
Honey, finish chopping that onion. Growing up. And you chopped that garlic, and y'all chat amongst yourselves
23:01
And I've got some favorite episodes. Do you get sick of hearing about the Brady Brunch and people ask me about it
23:06
No, I don't. In fact, it brings me back. So, do you have any questions
23:11
Well, comments. I mean, I remember a couple episodes. One was the, I love the episode with the frogs and the pizza, the date
23:19
Where you guys are in the convertible, you're at the movie. Are you breakdancing
23:24
Yeah, she's breakdancing. I'm breakdancing. This is the first completely, you look like a roach
23:31
Spin me. hey bobby your mom's one of a kind you did not get break dance did you
23:50
they call it you're gonna break something doing that dance too i think already did
23:55
i i liked the episode where y'all were in the convertible and there were all the frogs and the
24:01
pizza and the frogs jumping all over the car y'all remember all this stuff i know and and that was
24:05
like one of my favorite episodes. Why? Because of the frogs. I got to use those against Maureen
24:11
Marsha. Marsha. We had a little, we had a school room. We had a little desk that had
24:15
lift tops. I presented a great opportunity to hide a frog. Scared the mess out of it
24:20
Yeah, I got in big trouble. I also remember the fake mustache. Peter wearing the fake
24:27
mustache. Oh, yeah. I remember that one. And let's see. You protecting Cindy from the
24:33
Cindy had the list, and the kid was making fun of her. There was some violence on the Brady Bunch. There was some violence
24:37
What are you hinting? Golly, what else? I loved it when y'all went to Hawaii
24:41
I loved it when y'all went to the Grand Canyon and got put in jail. Y'all remember this
24:45
Yeah, Jim Bacchus. The Brady's in jail. Jim Bacchus, that's right. In Hawaii with Vincent Price
24:49
What a life you grew up. Yeah, it was, you know, it's hard to appreciate until looking back on it how, you know, unique and special it actually was
24:55
All right, this is so far. This looks like spaghetti sauce on it. Well, it's very much like it
25:01
Absolutely does, Peter. So far. I meant Peter. I meant Chris. That's all right
25:07
You've had 35 years of me being Peter. This became Chris today
25:13
I want you to add Italian seasoning, bay leaf, soy sauce, house seasoning, seasoning salt
25:24
All the bay leaves? Three bay leaves? All of them. Just dump, baby. Mama, I don't remember
25:28
Italian seasoning. It looks like a little oregano, a little thyme maybe. Uh-huh, Italian seasoning
25:33
It's got your rosemary, it's got your thyme, it's got your... All them Italian seasonings
25:40
All of them. All of it, honey. Is that about a tablespoon? I think you're exactly on the money
25:46
Maybe another one. This headband is squeezing my brain so hard, I can't really think
25:51
Is this one of those dishes that the longer it cooks, the better it becomes? Absolutely, absolutely
25:56
Because I remember this being better the next day. It's like pizza
25:59
If I left it. spaghetti sauce that better the next day So what we gonna do now is we would let this simmer And I add kind of like water Kind of like water or water
26:13
It really is water. Yeah, okay. It's not the dry stuff. It's not the dry stuff
26:18
So what I do is I keep me a pitcher of water by my stove
26:22
And so I add water as I need it. Now, there's a couple of ways you can do your macaroni noodles
26:29
You can cook those in a separate pot of boiling water and dump them in at the very last
26:34
or about 30 minutes out on your pot of goulash. You can throw them in here
26:40
I cooked my last time I tried to do this, I cooked it separately. Mine just wasn't very good
26:44
It came out a whole lot more like a chili. Son. I know. It was a shame
26:48
You know what it was? The water. It must have been because I didn't add any. You didn't add any water
26:53
I didn't add any water. I figured all the tomato sauce I put in there was
26:57
I got in the kitchen one day, son. I formulated the recipe and I gave it. Lies
27:03
I did. I did. I did. I did. All right. Now, after it, look up there
27:09
Ooh, that's the goulash I remember. That's the goulash, ain't it, honey? I got to taste that
27:14
Just let me give you a little bit. Mm. That is the goulash that I remember growing up as a kid
27:19
Isn't it great? This is excellent. And it will. It'll be better the next day. and I'll throw together a green salad
27:25
and some garlic bread, some French bread. And honey, we didn't know he was poor
27:30
We didn't know he was poor. No, this is high cotton right here
27:34
This is high cotton, baby. It's really, really easy. And for some reason, I can't do it
27:39
I've had you for the 70s and I've had you for the 80s
27:43
but I've got to move on, baby. I'm not going to be there for the 90s
27:48
You've outgrown me. All right, well, before... Just slip into my dressing room, baby
27:53
I'll wait for you. I have to infringe on you and ask one more thing
27:57
What's that? A little thing that you said in one episode? Your favorite food was
28:01
Oh, my favorite food was pork chimes. And apple chimes. We'll be back
28:10
We're on to the 90s. Don't leave our party, y'all. Up next, it's Sweet Baby Jack Carrot Cake
28:34
Welcome back! Welcome back, y'all. I have had such a good time walking through the decades with y'all today
28:49
But you know what? There ain't no time like the present. It ain't getting older, it's getting better
28:58
One of the best things in the whole entire world happened to me in the 2000s
29:06
I became a grandmother. I became a grandmother. Y'all, I'm fixing to celebrate my third wedding anniversary
29:20
I told my husband, Michael, I said, you know, I don't think we're going to have any grandchildren
29:26
I don't think it's going to happen. So why don't you and I try to get pregnant
29:32
So thank goodness Jamie and Brooke came through for me. And they put into my arms on August the 21st, 2006
29:42
the most precious little boy named Jack. I had finally hit the jackpot
29:50
I hit the jackpot. So I feel like it's real fitting today to finish off our Decades show
29:58
by making a cake in honor of my precious Jack. We're going to make a sweet baby Jack carrot cake
30:08
To make this cake, it's so easy, y'all. I've got flour. I've got self-rising flour
30:15
I've got cinnamon. I've got sugar. And this is not one of those delicate cakes that you have to be careful with
30:25
You can just get this mixed together in about two minutes. So I'm just going to stir together my dry ingredients
30:33
I've got four eggs. and I've got two four ounce jars of baby food carrots for my sweet little baby Jack
30:45
And they won't let me feed him this sort of stuff yet. And to this, what makes this cake so good is the oil in it, a cup and a half of oil
30:57
And this is going to be the most moist cake between the baby carrots and the vegetable oil that I'm putting in
31:06
Now, all we have to do is just blend these together until it's kind of smooth
31:12
And that'll take about two minutes. Now, over here, I've got three cake pans that have been greased and dusted with flour
31:21
Because we don't want our sweet baby jack cakes to stick. So, look at that
31:26
coming together just like that. Hey, babe. Well, come on. Thank you, Bobby
31:35
Your mixture is so quiet. I couldn't even get it back there. I know it. Those are mixed up
31:40
Now, what I want you to do is just divide this between the cake layers, okay
31:47
This is ready. Now, you can just do it. You can eyeball it, but I like to take some kind of..
31:53
Maybe just a measuring cup or something and just scoop it in so that I'll know that each cake pan is going to have as close to the right amount
32:04
Because when you cut your cake, you don't want one layer this big and another layer this big
32:08
So, son, just make sure those are even. Now, you know what I think that makes carrot cake so stinking good
32:17
That icing, honey. The icing. That cream cheese icing is so good
32:24
and it's so simple to make. It's nothing but cream, cheese, butter
32:29
powdered sugar, and vanilla. Nuts if you like it. And I've already got it mixed up
32:35
And, Son, while you're getting your layers ready for the oven... You got one ready
32:42
The cake fairy's been! Now, we're going to put that in a 325-degree oven
32:50
and we're going to let that bake for, oh gosh, probably about 25 minutes
32:56
All right. All right, now I'm going to put just a little bit of cream cheese right there
33:04
Oh, my, my, my. Mommy's sweating. All right. So that little bit of frosting
33:12
is going to act as a glue so it won't move around so easily
33:20
I think you're going to need a little extra sugar with that, Mama. Why? Honey, this cake's pretty
33:32
Look at his shirt. Hey. Hey, John
33:43
Say hey, big mama. No. Do you like his shirt? Oh, I love butter
33:49
Y'all see his shirt? I love butter, it says. Jack. Y'all, this is my son, Jack, and my wife, Brooke
34:04
Come to your grandmama. So much for baking cakes. Come to your grandmama
34:15
If you're not a grandma yet, I can't wait for it to happen to you
34:21
Because there's nothing like it. I'd have had you first, Sonny Boy, if I'd just known
34:30
I hope y'all have had a great time with me today. I've certainly had a wonderful time with y'all
34:37
And I'll see you when I see you. Tell them bye, Jack
