Today, y'all, I'm heating things up with some cool summer dishes
0:04
And my friend, country music star Lauren Alaina is here. Ain't nothing sweeter than Georgia Peach, yeah
0:13
She's a novice in the kitchen, y'all, but has the voice of an angel. So I'm gonna make her a deal
0:18
If I'm gonna teach you how to cook, I think you should try to teach me how to sing
0:23
Okay. First up, a spicy chimichurri coleslaw to top off our tasty cheeseburgers
0:29
Oh, my goodness. That's so good. And next, an oldie but goodie potato egg salad
0:37
I love this. And Lauren serves up our final number with a scrumptious dessert of blackberry cobbler
0:48
Perfect. Y'all will recognize her as a runner-up in 2011's American Idol
1:06
And I understand that you have a song called Georgia Peach. I do
1:11
And we're both Georgia Peaches. Yes. I should teach you my song. Well, why don't you sing me a couple of bars of Georgia Peach
1:19
Okay. But I'm going to sing it for you, and you've got to sing it back to me. I will try
1:23
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, ain't nothing sweeter than Georgia Peaches
1:34
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, there's a reason why the boys pick Georgia Peaches
1:45
Okay. That was great. Now your turn. Okay. Okay. Ah, ah, ah
1:57
There ain't nothing sweeter than a Georgia peach. That's why the ball is like, Georgia peaches
2:11
Oh, my gosh, honey. You are too cute, and you have got your work cut out
2:16
I tell you what, let's move on down here and let me teach you how to make some chilled zucchini soup
2:22
You know what? Y'all make me, yes, I want you to cut this onion
2:27
Lauren's mother's here with her. And between the two of them, they make me sound like I got a northern accent, and that ain't no lie
2:35
So, Lauren, to start the soup, if you'll just chop that onion, I'll get the zucchini down to size
2:42
and it's all going into the pot along with two cups of chicken stock and some salt and pepper
2:48
And then we'll just let it sit for about eight minutes. Now let's get started on that chimichurri slaw for our burger
2:55
Do you know how to peel a garlic, honey? Put it under the blade of your knife and pop down
3:02
There you go. And then that helps you get that skin off because it's going into the blender
3:08
So for this chimichurri sauce, we've got three cloves of garlic, one shallot
3:13
And then smell that. What is that? It smells like a lemon
3:18
It's cilantro. It smells like a lemon. Now, this is parsley. We only used about a quarter of a cup of the cilantro
3:26
but I want you to put all of this parsley into the blender. And we're going to need a half a teaspoon of red pepper flakes
3:34
Three tablespoons of white wine vinegar. One, two, three. Very good
3:43
What's up? Very good. What's up? Oh, a little extra. Okay, how much of this
3:50
Three tablespoons, equal amount. One. Jinx, show me a Coke
3:59
Two. Three. Three. I think that's perfect. All right, now we're going to put on our lid, and we're just going to pulsate that until it's nice and chopped up
4:15
Let's see. I wasn't ready, Paula. I wasn't either. There, now it's going, Lauren
4:26
Look. So tell me, Lauren, about your audition for American Idol. I tried out for Idol when I was 15, and..
4:34
You tried out for... What are you saying? Idol. American Idol. Oh, Idol
4:40
I thought you said auto. Okay. You talk just like I do
4:46
Give me a break. Come on. So you were 15 when you tried out
4:52
And I was the last person to go, which I didn't think was a good thing because it's higher
4:59
Yeah, but I would think that that would be a good thing. I walked into the room and I saw Randy Jackson, who's been on the show since season one
5:07
Right. And we're just going to dump this in there? Yes Just go on and toss it in with this shredded cabbage There you go So you walk in and you see Randy And I see Randy and Jennifer Lopez Oh my gosh
5:20
And you just intimidated like you wouldn't believe. And Stephen Tyler. Alright, now just stir that up good
5:26
I was last, so I said to them, since I'm last, can my family come in here
5:31
And they said yes. I remember that. I sang my mom and dad's song
5:35
which is I Don't Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith and Stephen. Alright, give us like two lines
5:40
Okay. I could spend my life in this sweet surrender. Oh, my goodness
5:50
Is that it? Well, no, we're just done with this. You know, you go home and you tell Mama, I'll let you make the chimichurri
5:59
Step aside, Mama. Yes, step aside, Mama. So, Lauren, what goes better with summer dishes than a cool potato and egg salad
6:06
We're going to cut these up. and we need about six cups of these new potatoes
6:15
So the deal was that I was going to teach you how to cook
6:18
And I'm going to teach you how to sing. Uh-huh, and how do you profess to do that
6:22
Can you match my pitch? Like if I go, You sing as good as I cook
6:33
You don't know how to cook. You don't know how to sing. I'll be right back, y'all
6:39
Coming up next, we put the finishing touches on our potato egg salad and our chilled zucchini soup
6:46
Oh, that looks so good. Doesn't that look delicious? And later, this little angel sings her heart out
6:53
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch
7:07
Y'all, we're in the kitchen today, and we're making wonderful summer dishes for a hot, hot day
7:17
And I've got a hot, hot girl in here in the kitchen with me
7:21
This is Lauren Alaina, and we're going to put together a potato salad
7:27
So, Lauren, if you would drain these potatoes in there. Yes, ma'am
7:32
I'm going to go ahead and cut this off. Be careful there so that you don't need. Oh, my gosh
7:36
She is so tough. And while you're doing that, I'm going to come down here and I'm going to make our sauce for our egg and potato salad
7:45
All right, I'm going to need a third of a cup of Italian dressing
7:51
And that's probably about the only thing I'm going to measure, Lauren. Okay
7:55
And I'm going to use a half a teaspoon of horseradish. You like horseradish
8:00
Mm-hmm. Good. So they're going to have a little bitty bite to them
8:08
And do you think you could dice up this celery and onions for me
8:13
That would be great. That looks like about a cup of mayonnaise
8:22
And I'm going to put in a teaspoon of dry mustard. Now I'm going to add about a half a cup of sour cream
8:32
We'll use the same spatula. Oh, this sounds delicious. There we go, about half a cup
8:37
Oh, it's going to be so good. I like to take my eggs and I like to just mash them
8:44
That's just so much easier than chasing it all over the board, trying to chop it
8:52
I trust you. Okay, come on. All right, now do the same thing with those onions, doll baby
8:58
Yes, ma'am. Let's get back to Idol. Okay. I loved Stephen Tyler
9:04
Me too. And, of course, I've always liked Randy. Let's put all this in here
9:09
So, I want you to tell me, what was it like to be standing there holding hands and waiting to see who won
9:19
Well. Was your heart just pounding? Yeah. I mean, I made it all the way to the top, too
9:26
Right. So at that point, it's like you're just so excited that you made it that far, whatever happens
9:33
Yes. I wanted to win so bad. I'm not going to lie. I'd be lying if I said whatever
9:37
Of course. Of course you wanted to win. But, you know, I've gotten to do some amazing things since then
9:43
Yes. I went on tour with Sugar Land. I got to sing for the president. I've done some really awesome things
9:50
For 18 years old. Well, that's... I'm blessed. That's for sure. Yes, honey
9:56
But to go back to that moment of thinking if it's yes or no, if you're first or second
10:02
it's going to be over if you don't win. Yes. So in that moment, you know, it doesn't stop me
10:07
Did you think you were going to win? No. Girls don't usually win shows like that
10:17
Because girls vote, and if they think someone's cute, they're going to vote for them
10:21
I'm completely fine with it now. Like I wouldn trade it for the world You know I didn win but I did win because I with you now Well thank you darling Now I going to add a cup of mayonnaise
10:35
and I'm just going to eyeball this. That mayonnaise is going to cream this out
10:39
And I added a teaspoon of lemon juice. Now I'm going to add a splash of half and half
10:47
Okay. Hit it, baby. Oh, yeah. All right
10:57
So now we're going to put this. We're just going to pour this. Oh, that looks so good
11:02
Doesn't that look delicious? It does. Look at that. Yes. All right
11:13
So we're going to put this in the fridge because, you know, if you're going to
11:18
Is that cool? Yes. We want to get it cold, cold. because if you're going to eat a cold soup, you want it cold, cold
11:25
So I'm going to sit this in our refrigerator and let this get nice and cold
11:32
Okay. Come on down here, baby. And this takes the cake, I think, for summer eating
11:40
It's a hamburger. I got a really good boyfriend right now, so I decided that I was going to cook him Valentine's dinner
11:49
and I made hamburger steak, mashed potatoes, baked macaroni and cheese, and broccoli with cheese in them
11:59
And I did really good on the macaroni, the mashed potatoes, and the broccoli, and I burnt the meat pretty bad
12:06
You burnt the meat? How did you burn it? See, I'm actually a really talented cook when it comes to meat
12:12
because I didn't burn the outside. I burnt the inside. How did you burn the inside
12:19
Because I'm a terrible cook. But you've got to learn some, Tom. Yes
12:23
Can we do this? I don't, yes. I don't understand how you can burn something from the inside out
12:29
How did you cook it? Well, he ate it, and he said he liked it. Well, you know what
12:35
He was lucky to have you cook for him to start with
12:39
I tried. It's the thought that counts. It is certainly the thought that counts
12:43
And how old is your boyfriend? He's 18. Did he give you a good Valentine's gift
12:50
He did. Is this good? Yes, that's beautiful. All right, so we're going to let those cook for about five to six minutes on each side, y'all
12:59
I just seasoned it very simply with salt, pepper, and a little Worcestershire sauce
13:04
So show me what he gave you, or do you have it with you? My daddy actually bought me this bracelet for Christmas, and he got me this heart
13:14
Oh, I recognize that heart. It's like half a heart. It says keep your heart open and love will find its way in
13:20
Yes. He said that it meant something different to him because he had to push his way in there
13:24
Into my heart. Oh. How sweet. It sounds like he's a romantic
13:32
He is a super sweetheart. Coming up next, y'all will want to savor our chimichurri top burgers
13:38
Oh, my goodness. Mm, mm, mm. And then Lauren bakes her sweet, sweet blackberry crumble
13:45
See, that looks delicious. And later, this young canary actually makes a songbird out of me
13:52
How sweet the sound. Go ahead and dip up our soup
14:06
Lauren, look at these beautiful burgers. All right. So let's fix our burgers with whatever you want on it
14:15
Now, I always put mayonnaise on my burgers. Okay. And I'm going to let you fix yours the way you want to
14:22
I'm going to put some coleslaw on my burger. I like my burgers with mayonnaise and tomato
14:30
With mayonnaise and tomato. Okay. And I've also got a special sauce
14:35
Thank you. And some onion. So, what's in the special sauce? Well, it's, you know, that special sauce
14:43
It's a secret. No, special sauce is usually made up of mayonnaise
14:51
Thank you. And a little ketchup. All right, there you go. Have a big old bite
14:58
It's hard to get your mouth around. Look at that, y'all. Layers of coleslaw and that good old burger and that onion and tomato
15:07
and butter lettuce in a special sauce. Oh, my goodness. Mm-mm-mm. That's so good
15:20
It's good. Isn't that soup delicious? Mm-hmm. Yes. All right, now I want you to try the potato salad
15:27
That is so good. And I have to say... I love this
15:33
Mm-hmm. Now I've shown you my summertime stuff. It appears that something missing Dessert Mm Okay Well my Nana makes the best cobblers in the world
15:50
and I actually asked her for a recipe, and I'm going to try to make it with you
15:54
So we're going to make blackberry cobbler. So we have two and a half cups of blackberries right here
16:00
You're going to mix a cup of sugar into that. And that sugar will pull out the juices
16:06
For the dry ingredients, you're going to have one cup of all-purpose flour, two teaspoons of baking powder, one cup of milk
16:17
Okay. A half a cup of butter. Okay. Which equals one stick of butter for those of you out there who are wondering
16:28
Yum. This looks wonderful already. Okay, so you just evenly put this in here. Mm-hmm
16:37
The cool thing about this is, while it's in there, it literally like rises around
16:40
Right. Right. It's kind of like magic. What does Nana call this
16:47
Does she call it a blackberry cobbler? Yes, ma'am. Okay. And I see you've got some cinnamon here
16:53
You just put however much you want in there. Okay. Well, why don't we just do it like that
16:58
Yes, ma'am. I think that'll be good. All right. So $3.75 for how long
17:04
45 to 50 minutes. Oh, okay. Does Nana serve this with ice cream
17:09
Actually, she serves it with whipped cream, and we're going to make some
17:13
Okay, I love whipped cream, y'all. Stick this on in there. Speaking of sticking it in the oven, y'all stick around
17:20
because I want to see if this little girl cooks as good as she sings
17:24
Coming up next, we're tasting Lauren's delicious blackberry cobbler. That is so good, Lauren
17:32
And singing, y'all, a duet. Was lost But now I'm found
17:41
Was blind But now I see We got blackberry cobbler coming out of the oven
17:57
And it looks delicious Plant it, baby girl All right, now you said your Nana makes whipped cream
18:07
Mm-hmm. So what are we going to do? Okay, so we are going to use three-fourths of a cup of heavy whipping cream
18:14
So it just depends on how much you need. Go ahead and make it a cup, honey
18:21
Why are you being so stingy? You do like to use extra of everything
18:27
Yes, I do. All right, now how much sugar? Just one of those. One tablespoon
18:32
Okay. And a fourth of a teaspoon of the cardamom. It has a really cool flavor
18:37
It's like a warm, gingery flavor. Okay. How about if I... I'm going to get this going over here
18:43
Yes. There you go. And you want whipped cream on a pretty good speed, y'all
18:49
Yeah. Well, I'm going to dip up our cobbler. And I have to say, Lauren, this looks delicious
18:59
Well, thank you. Ooh, and it's still so warm. Okay, one more time
19:09
Let's see if we can harmonize together. Amazing grace. How sweet the sound that saved
19:28
Oh, I tried. I tried on this. I don't think I can be saved
19:33
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me
19:50
I once, take it, was lost. But now I'm found. Was blind
20:00
But now I see. Oh, my gracious. That is so good, Lauren
20:14
Thank you, Nana. That is so good. Yes. Thank you, Nana. I had such a good time with you today
20:22
You're a precious girl with a bright, bright future. And you know what
20:28
It seems like she's got a good head on her shoulders, which is so important
20:32
Don't let anybody change you. Okay. And remember everything that Mama and Daddy and Nana taught you
20:39
Okay, I will. Okay, let's hit it. As usual, we send you love and best dishes
20:55
Perfect. Thank you
