Hey, y'all
0:03
Today on Paula's Party, your favorite foods from your childhood, all grown-ups
0:09
We're gonna be cooking a delicious candy bar pie. Well, I ain't got no milk, but here
0:14
take it down back. We're making a homemade version of a classic snack
0:19
a yellow sponge cake with creamy filling. That's it. And I'm recreating my favorite childhood treat
0:30
The perfect mix of chocolate, caramel, and nuts. Is that yummy, Dan
0:36
So y'all get real comfortable, because today we're going to be blasting back to the past
0:41
on Paula's Party. Get it, Tara, get it! Oh, my gracious
1:22
Somebody trained y'all very, very well. Welcome to Paula's party. I'm so glad you're here today
1:30
Because guess where we're going today? We're going back to our childhood
1:37
Today's show is all about our favorite childhood foods. But we're going to change them around a little bit and turn our favorite foods as a child into more grown-up food
1:51
Do you know what my favorite foods are from my childhood? And I can't say the names because, you know, we're not allowed to use names
1:59
But do y'all remember a show called My Friend Flicker? Well, it kind of rhymes with flicker
2:09
Do y'all get it? Looks kind of something like this. We're going to be cooking My Friend Flicker bars
2:20
Huh? And we're going to be making another favorite of everybody's. Banana pudding
2:29
And we're going to make it with probably one of the favorite cookies from our childhood
2:34
It kind of rhymes with like, Glorio. Is that a word? All right
2:44
Well, if y'all are ready, let's party. All right. To start my friend Flickr Pie, I'm going to set me up a double boiler
2:59
Because we're going to have to melt our candy bars. I tell you what, it's already started boiling
3:05
So I'm just going to stick those candy bars over in there
3:10
and let them start melting. And while they're melting, I'm going to be making our crust
3:15
Now, I've got about 1 1⁄2 cups of graham cracker crumbs. And I'm going to add 3 tablespoons of sugar
3:24
and then I'm going to take six tablespoons of melted butter. I love me some butter
3:37
I just love it. All right, so we're just going to take our spoon
3:43
and we're going to work that butter into our crumbs. The secret to a good crust is baking it off
3:54
so that it will like harden up for you so when you cut your pie
3:59
it won't like just be like crumbs so we're just going to press that
4:06
just like that that could use the pop plate is a press
4:15
oh see that made it great so we're going to put this in a three hundred fifty
4:19
degree oven and we're going to bake it for maybe eight minutes
4:25
So we're going to get this in the oven. And I've got one in here that's already ready
4:35
So we don't even have to wait. Doesn't that look good? All right, now our candy bars are melting
4:45
And I'm going to add to that a half a cup of peanut butter
4:51
Just taste that. Just lick it
5:03
Isn't that yummy? It's delicious. Chocolate and peanut butter. Mmm. All right, now I'm going to add a tablespoon and a half of half and half
5:15
Do you know this is the way I love to eat my chocolate candy bars when they... I..
5:24
Lots of times, y'all, if I'm in my car, I will put my candy bar up on the visor
5:30
so it can get warm and kind of melt, and then I just lick it
5:35
Okay. Who's what, baby? I have a question. Before I ask my question, I have to tell you a short story
5:42
Oh, yay. I just wanted to tell you why I'm such a big fan of yours
5:47
My mother passed away when I was 16 and ever since then
5:51
my father, my sister and I didn't know how to cook so we ate out of frozen food and cans and boxes
5:56
but when I discovered your show you taught me how to cook because everything you made was simple and easy
6:01
so now we sit around the table again and we eat real food because of you
6:05
so I wanted to say thank you Thank you for it Thank you so much
6:17
Thank you for sharing that. You're welcome. I had to tell you because you're very special to me and my family because of that
6:23
So thank you. Thank you. But my question then, my related question, is what was your favorite recipe that your mother made for you when you were growing up
6:34
Gosh, there was so many things. And I'm so sorry for your loss
6:41
I know exactly how you feel. because I lost my parents young
6:44
And that's a very hard age for you to lose a parent
6:49
But my mother made many wonderful things that I just adored. But I have to tell you this
6:55
My mother was the divinity queen, honey. Nobody could make divinity like my mother
7:04
That's probably my favorite thing. All right, y'all, this has got to cool for us
7:10
So while it's cooling, let's take a quick break. And when we come back, we're going to put this pie together
7:16
and we're going to taste it, and it's going to be more partying. Coming up y a delicious Andy Bar pie
7:40
Y'all are so sweet and so giving and so loving, and I thank y'all for that
7:50
In case you've just tuned in, what is your favorite food from your childhood
7:57
That's what we're doing today. And we're fixing to finish our pie
8:03
Now, I had to let that chocolate cool, and so it's almost hard again
8:11
But I'm going to fix that. Well, first I'll pull me out a little candy bar
8:18
No, I'm not. I could. I want to. What I'm going to do now to
8:24
fluff up our filling is I'm going to use a whipped topping that comes in the little containers
8:33
It rhymes with tool. Chips. Chips
8:45
What is this now? Tool chips. That's what we're going to use
8:50
But actually, I have to tell y'all, when I'm making desserts and it calls for a whipped topping
8:55
I always take fresh whipped cream and whip it myself and sweeten it
9:00
because I just think there's nothing any better on the tongue than real whipped cream
9:06
But, you know, if you don't want to fool with it, this will be fine. Now, because of the stiffness of our candy
9:13
Normally, I would say we're going to fold this in, but this may be rather hard to fold
9:26
So I think I'm going to have to do it like this, almost kind of mix it in and, yeah, cut it
9:32
Did somebody say cut it? Yes. I'm going to have to kind of cut it in
9:39
And it's not going to take but just a couple of minutes. But while I'm doing this now, I want you all to talk to me some more
9:47
What, darling? What's your question? Southerners have passion. And my question is, because your passion is cooking
9:53
when your grandchild is old enough to cook, what is the first recipe you're going to teach him
9:58
Gosh. There's going to be so many things. And I don't know, probably one of the first things I'll cook for him
10:06
would be like cheese grits. You know, maybe his first table food
10:11
But I've already got his cookware. It's hanging in my kitchen. And that's where I'm going to be bringing Jack
10:20
And I like to encourage everybody to pull their kids into their kitchen
10:26
Just some of the most wonderful memories are formed there, don't you think? All right, so now I'm going to just pour this batter into the crust
10:38
Now, I've got a question for y'all. I got this pile spread out
10:44
Who wants to lick the bowl? Oh, my goodness, I can't choose
10:50
I can't choose between y'all. So whoever gets to it the fastest? Isn't it yummy
11:09
So now our pie is going to go into the refrigerator to set
11:17
But... But I have one that's already chilled. Ooh. Chop, chop
11:31
You know, that first piece that you take out is the dainiest, most delicate piece
11:54
Let's see. I've got some chocolate syrup here. Why not, right
12:07
Yeah. Whoa! I'm getting trembly
12:19
I'm so excited. And y'all want me to show you what mine and Michael's favorite diet candy is? Yes
12:33
You can eat as many as you want to. They're diet bites
12:43
So we'll just tuck him right in there. All right, let's bring him out
12:54
Doesn't he look beautiful? Y'all drooling yet? Me too
13:06
When we come back, it's more of Paula's Party. Coming up, y'all, a golden sponge cake with a creamy filling
13:22
And later, making candy with a man who's handy. Today's party, y'all, is all about childhood favorites all grown up
13:49
Well, I got the sweetest email from these two sisters. And these two sisters are here with us today
13:57
All right, tell everybody who you are. I'm Sarah. And I'm Tammy
14:01
Sarah and Tammy. Yes, ma'am. Well, y'all are just beautiful. Oh, thank you
14:06
Now, what recipe are we doing today? We're going to do a golden sponge cake with a creamy filling, one of our childhood favorites
14:15
All right, well, y'all got pictures there? Yes. There's our recipe. Well, you can call that out to me
14:22
Okay. Those are pictures of my sister and I when we were young
14:27
The interesting thing behind our story is that we did not get to know each other or find each other until about six years ago
14:36
No. Yes, ma'am. Actually, my sister is two years older than I, and she was given up for adoption, and then we found each other
14:45
And through our many trials and adventures of getting to know one another, there's several things that we have in common as sisters
14:53
and one of them shopping of course and John Travolta And you Watching you Absolutely That is wonderful God bless y
15:07
That's one of the sweetest stories. Now tell me about the recipe
15:11
Kind of come up with it together. It's kind of a collaboration. Well, why don't we get started
15:17
Okay. And what I want y'all to do is walk me through it and tell me each step
15:21
Okay. Now how did this cake appear here? That cake's very simple
15:25
It's a boxed cake mix, a yellow moist cake mix. Okay, now what do I do now
15:30
Okay, in a saucepan, you're going to combine your five tablespoons of flour and one cup of milk
15:36
Okay, now I want to slowly add that milk so that flour won't lump
15:40
Right. Is that right? Yeah. And you'll just stir that until that gets thick
15:48
Nice and thick, and it's probably going to be almost pasty-like, isn't it
15:52
Yes, ma'am. All right, does that look right? That looks good. All right, can y'all see that
16:00
I mean, that is really... That's perfect. Perfect. Really, really thick. The next thing you're going to do is have one cup of sugar
16:09
Okay, I got it. Half a teaspoon of salt. I got it
16:13
And I got two of your favorite ingredients here. I see that! Half a cup of shortening and a half a cup of butter softened
16:22
Ooh, I know just what this is going to taste like. Yeah. And one teaspoon of vanilla
16:30
And you're just going to blend that all together until it's really fluffy. Okay
16:42
All right, so we're going to let this cool, because if we put this in hot in with our butter and our shortening
16:48
it would, like, melt it, wouldn't it? and break it down too much
16:52
So I'm going to sit it there in the ice water. Now, am I going to be slicing this cake
16:57
Am I doing anything to it? Yes, ma'am. You're going to slice it. Oh, gosh. You know I'm not good at that
17:02
Nor are we. Y'all are not. All right, well, I'm going to eyeball this thing
17:17
I did pretty good, didn't I? All right, so let's check on our..
17:27
Oh, gosh, that got it cold quick. Quick, that was wonderful. All right, so now what I do
17:34
Now you're going to add that mixture to your sweet mixture. Okay
17:39
It's going to make it really light and fluffy and airy. That's it. Ooh
17:48
Okay. And that really does taste just like a flinky. A flinky
17:58
All right. Going to spread that on your bottom piece? When my boys were little, they always said
18:11
Mama, you clean the bowl too good. Bring it to the edge
18:16
Yes, ma'am. All right, put the top back on it. And then cut it kind of in the shape of it
18:29
All right, you come up and show me how to cut it. Come on, Sarah
18:34
Come on up. OK. Just kind of cut it lengthwise like this. Uh-huh
18:44
This is your plate? OK. There you go. Now we add powdered sugar and a sprig of mint
18:55
Y'all come on in here and let's taste this. Come on, Sarah, dig in
19:03
Wait, we got to make a toast. Okay. This was one of the sweetest stories that I've heard just lately
19:14
and I'm so proud and happy for both of y'all because we get one shot around
19:21
That's right. And family is without a doubt the most important thing in the whole world. Absolutely
19:28
Yes, ma'am. And I'm so glad that y'all found each other and you have enriched my life by being here with me
19:34
Aw, thank you. You enriched our father. Thank you. So we'll be back in a minute
19:55
Coming up, y'all, we're gonna be making a yummy homemade peppermint bark
20:00
Welcome back, everybody
20:18
I have had so much fun at our party today, I can't tell y'all how fun y'all have been
20:24
Well, I want to share with y'all in this next recipe a candy that really takes me way, way, way back
20:36
And that's peppermint. And every Christmas, Santa Claus would put one of those long candy canes
20:46
in mine and Bubba's stocking, and, you know, they're about that big around
20:51
I mean, every Christmas, I could count on that, some walnuts and an orange
20:56
in the toe of that stocking. You know what? In order to make this next recipe
21:04
I'm going to need the help of a strong man. Look, I see somebody out there flexing, y'all
21:14
You got one. What's your... Woof, woof, woof, woof, woof. I want to make my wife jealous
21:24
So give me a hug. Oh, you're huggable. Thank you. All right
21:30
Now, I happen to know what your name is. Yeah. Ralph? Ralph, no
21:36
Oh, it's not? Give me another one. Zacharias? Sounds good. I'm Maury
21:43
Maury, I was close. Well, I tell you what. I actually need your help, Maury
21:49
Okay. What I'm fixing to make is called a peppermint bark. But I need somebody to help me crumble up the peppermint sticks
22:00
Okay. Now, I've got you a hammer over there and a bag with some candy canes in it
22:05
So if you'll go over there, and I'm going to do the same here. Nah, that's my hammer
22:10
Okay, I'll take this one. Okay, I like this one better. All right, so you got your peppermint canes in your bag, right
22:20
Got them right here. Well, you know what to do from here on out. I gonna chop these things right Yeah we gonna chop them We need about a cup of peppermint chunks But listen now don do it too fine okay Okay Because you want to know when you bite into that candy that you eating peppermint cakes
22:43
So chop, chop. Chop, chop, chop. Can I stop and take a break now
22:49
Yes, you can take a break. This is tough work. Already overworked
22:53
I'm working up a sweat. That's the lights, baby. I don't know about you
22:58
I'm done. Turn me over. You most certainly are done. Okay. Thank you
23:18
Thank you, darling. You were a wonderful candy beater. Thank you. All right
23:25
So I have melted two pounds of white chocolate. Doesn't that look delicious
23:37
Yes. All right, now to our melted chocolate, look how velvety. I've got to just show y'all
23:48
This is just like velvet. So let me run over here and see how
24:03
Maury! You lazy little devil. Just like a man
24:18
Y'all know what I'm talking about. You said not too fine
24:29
What? You said not too fine. I didn't say not at all
24:36
All right. So now to our chocolate, I'm going to mix... I don't know
24:48
I'm going to start with like a half a teaspoon of peppermint extract
24:58
And then I'm going to taste because we might need some more
25:05
We do. So, another half. So, y'all, I finally wound up putting
25:18
about two teaspoons of peppermint extract in this. Now I'm going to pour in probably, maybe..
25:30
every one of them. That's probably about a cup. Now you can put as much or as little as you like
25:39
Now you just mix it up and spread it out on a cookie sheet with wax paper
25:43
until it's about a half an inch thick. It's great to make this around the holiday time
25:54
and put it in jars and put a little ribbon around it
25:58
and give it as a gift. All right. So at this point, all we would do is take our peppermint bark
26:06
put it in the refrigerator, give it a chance to harden up, and it looks like this
26:13
Can everybody see it? All right, so let's talk about our candy
26:25
They have a hammer out here for me, but I think a hammer would probably be too rough for our candy
26:31
So all you're going to do is just break this into sizes that you want
26:42
I am a sorry miss. I'm sending you a big one. Wait, wait
26:51
I heard something clump. Are you all right? That was a bad aim, y'all
27:03
So this is all we have to do is just break it up into the pieces that you want
27:10
jar it up, put it in an old tin. Well, how'd y'all like the candy
27:15
You get some! When we come back, y'all, more Apollo's party! See y'all back in a second
27:31
Coming up, Nacho Mama's Banana Pudding. And later, recreating my favorite childhood treat
27:42
Is that Yummy Dan? Have y'all had fun kind of stepping back into your childhood
28:02
Yes. I love going back. I can't go back enough. And I got an email from somebody
28:09
and they said that they just loved those cookies, you know. They're dark and they've got that white cream center
28:21
They're kind of like glorios, you know. Well, they emailed me and said that that was their favorite childhood memory food
28:32
Y'all, come on up here. Come here. I want you to tell
28:37
All right now, what are y'all to each other y'all brother and sister? No, no no we're engaged
28:44
Oh, you're engaged Can she cook? I try I try well he likes to cook too. He does do you mind if I borrow him
29:00
No, go right ahead. Come on Eric I'll be very chill with him Halle
29:07
All right, so you like these little cookies, do you? Oh, yes, ma'am
29:12
You still like them? Mm-hmm. Do you like dunk them in milk
29:17
Oh, yes. Smoking. And do you like them crumbled up on your ice cream? Mm-hmm
29:25
There, you are. That cookie. So I'm going to show you a quick dessert, Eric. Mm-hmm
29:37
You got dimples too. I need some milk. You need some milk
29:44
Well, I ain't got no milk, but here, chase it down with that. Get that milk
29:55
It did. Good. It's kind of like a... Liquid. It worked perfectly. Good
30:03
All right. The recipe actually says to put the bananas in first, but I don't like that
30:09
So let's start with your favorite. Let's start with a cookie. You want to? All right
30:13
Yes, ma'am. OK, so put about half those cookies in our trifle bowl
30:18
Yeah, maybe a third. Good enough for them. That's good enough. All right, now let's put a layer of bananas
30:29
I use my hand, but I have to... Well, wash them first. Okay. Come right over here and wash them
30:35
because I don't know where they've been. All right. Here, I have you a towel
30:42
Oh, thank you. All right, now come on over here and put a layer of bananas in there
30:53
This is kind of not like your mama's banana pudding, is it? No, ma'am. All right, I think that's probably enough
31:01
You know, you can really do this any way you want to. That's what I love about a recipe
31:07
That's what I love about cooking. All right, now sprinkle us some nuts over it, please
31:14
You know, you can, that's plenty. Okay. The first time around, you know, make the recipe, go by the recipe
31:22
But then after that, make it your own. because there's certain things that you like
31:27
that somebody else may not like. So you just fix it to suit that little black tongue in your mouth
31:33
All right, so now let's put a squirt of chocolate, don't you
31:41
All right. I don't know if it calls for that, but let's do it anyway
31:47
Because you and me, we like it, don't we? All right, now put a layer of whipped cream on there
31:54
Now don't get it on the side of the bowl, Eric. Be clean
32:02
See, like up there? Can y'all see it? You missed a spot
32:07
Oh, I'm sorry. And that's all I'm going to say about that
32:13
Looks good. All right, more chocolate crumbs. Just tell me when
32:23
Okay. When? Oh. All right, we'll spread that out. All right. More bananas
32:35
I think my big fat head was in the way of your camera shot
32:45
You all right, Eric? Oh, I'm good. Can you all see that
32:51
We've got our glorios. We got our bananas we got our nuts we got some whipping cream some heavy whipped cream more Glorios more bananas Let put a few more nuts on
33:08
Chocolate syrup! Ooh, Eric, you got quite a hand for chocolate
33:19
Thank you. All right, now nuts. Whoa. Okay. Now whipping cream. You want me to show you how to make it real pretty
33:33
I do. Alright, you be the cameraman and I'll be the squirt man
33:56
All right, listen. And the last is, you got it
34:10
All right. Now, I wanted you to save just a few nuts. Mm-hmm
34:16
And I wanted you to save just a few glorious crumbs. Why don't we just do a little bitty squirt
34:29
So how is that, Eric? That looks good. Isn't that beautiful? Yes, ma'am
34:33
You want some? Mm-hmm. Guess what, y'all? Y'all are going to get some of this, too. Yeah
34:41
Hey, y'all, let it all out. And when we come back, we're partying even more
34:49
And more! Coming up, my favorite candy that's all grown up. A turtle candy pizza
35:10
Welcome back, y'all. We're still working on those childhood foods that we so loved
35:18
What is that, y'all? It's a turtle. When I was little, both sets of my grandparents lived in Florida
35:31
And that was about the only vacations that we took. And along the way, there was always a Horns or a Stucky's
35:41
Are y'all familiar with that? I could not wait until we got to these stores
35:48
because there was a candy in there that I just did adore
35:52
And that was a turtle. Well today I gonna take us back but we gonna do them a little different We gonna do them in a little bit more grown fashion I gonna share with you a recipe that I really like for like parties and things like that
36:09
And we're gonna start with a flour tortilla shell. And I'm gonna cut them into eighths
36:18
And this is just real easy. If you do it this way, you just about can't mess up
36:29
And every piece will be like perfect. All right, now we're going to take our shells
36:38
And y'all are going to ask me in a few minutes, well, Paula, why'd you do that
36:42
It would be so much easier if you had left that completely whole
36:47
And you're right, it would be. But that once they get crisp, you can't cut them
36:54
They would crack into a bunch of little different pieces. And that's okay if these overlap
37:00
We're going to stuff them in the oven, and we're going to bake them for, gosh, probably about eight minutes
37:05
at about 350 degrees. So I've got some ready. All right, now I've got some that's dried out and crisp it up for us
37:18
I don't think that's a word. Is it crisped? Is that a word
37:25
All right. Now, to put our turtles together, we're going to take our shells
37:38
You watching, Hallie? Okay, you got a big hungry man there that you got to learn how to cook for
37:45
And if you want diamonds, you must do this. You know, they say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach
37:58
All right, now I've got just some regular little bites of caramel candies
38:07
And you know what I'm talking about, don't you? And I have melted them down with a little condensed milk
38:17
Not evaporated milk, but condensed milk. You know, the real sweet milk that comes in the can

All right, so I'm going to take some of our caramel. Well, she is here, don't you, Eric
38:34
I'm gonna bring it over. Ouchie. It's a little warm. And I'm gonna spread that onto our pie shell
39:04
Whoo And now in this bowl I got just some regular melted chocolate
39:12
And I've melted these both over a water bath. And now I'm going to spread it with a little chocolate
39:28
I'm just going to help it out a little bit. Oh, and I'm going to let a little of that caramel stick out
39:36
You know how those turtles do? And now a turtle ain't a turtle without some nuts
39:55
The old-timey turtle and the new-timey turtle. All right, I've got a plate full that's been done down here
40:23
Come here, Dan. Take it. Come here, Jim. Come on in with that camera
40:29
Taste. Is that Yummy Dan? They're delicious
40:40
Do you know what all this food reminds me of? Can anybody guess
40:48

40:59
Bring on the hula hoops. Now I have to have the pink

41:25
How can I not do that? Gotta keep it up here now
41:36
Maybe it's because I don't have a waist anymore. Well, I'm gonna be working on this
41:44

41:50
