Hey, y'all. I'm Paula Deen
0:02
You know, I don't think there's anything better than sleeping in and staying in your PJs all day long
0:09
And today, me and Michael are gonna have breakfast in bed. I'm gonna be making him a sinfully delicious spicy cinnamon cake
0:18
Then I'm rolling up a buttery spinach griette puff pastry that's just gonna melt in his mouth
0:23
And then last but not least, I'm making that boy a Dutch apple pancake
0:30
that is so sweet and so rich, y'all are gonna think I'm serving him dessert for breakfast
0:37
So all my buddies out there, y'all jump back in the bed, pull up the covers, fluff up the pillows
0:42
because today we're having breakfast in bed. How would you like for me to bring you breakfast in bed
1:20
Oh, Michael. That would be so wonderful. Would you do that? I'd love to do it
1:27
You fix it and I'll bring it to you. Wake me up when it's fixed
1:34
Well, okay. I guess that's better than nothing. Listen, Otis, he's already snoring again
1:42
All right. I'll be back. All right. Wake us. Okay. Y'all go back to sleep
1:50
I'm going to cook breakfast. All right. Call us. Okay. When it's ready
1:55
You just get comfortable. There you go. Now, the first dish I'm gonna start with this morning
2:01
towards our breakfast is a spicy cinnamon cake, and it's gonna be so quick and easy to make
2:08
it's not even funny. I'm gonna start by breaking four eggs into a dish
2:18
I'm gonna check those out, make sure those eggs are all right. And that one looks good
2:24
That one looks good. There's nothing I do, I don't think, that brings me more pleasure
2:31
than serving Michael breakfast in bed. But this morning, he wanted to serve me in bed
2:36
so I'm still gonna do the cooking. All right, I'm gonna beat our four eggs up
2:44
And to our eggs, I'm gonna add one package of Spiced Cake Mix
2:55
I'm gonna add a half a cup of vegetable oil. It's gonna make it so moist and delicious
3:03
All right, now to our dish, I'm gonna add a small package
3:07
of instant vanilla pudding. And one more ingredient that's gonna make this real
3:15
real moist is one cup of sour cream. It has a wonderful, wonderful flavor
3:25
I remember when Michael and I, well, a few months after we'd been seeing each other
3:32
somehow he wound up spending the night over. And I got up and I fixed him breakfast, and I served it to him on a silver tray
3:45
and he was all snuggled under the covers, and he didn't know what I was doing
3:50
because he was still sleeping. But when I walked into that bedroom with this fabulous breakfast on a silver tray
3:58
I think I really got his approval then. He said, this might not be half bad
4:08
All right, I'm just going to clean my whip, try to get that cake mix out of there
4:14
because this is ready to be mixed up. Now, I'm gonna put this in a bundt pan
4:20
and I'm gonna make sure I spray my pan very, very well
4:24
because I want this to come out nice and pretty. All right, now I'm gonna take half of our batter
4:31
and put it in our pan. Just like that, that looks to be about half
4:44
half. And I'm gonna spread that around and make sure it's even in our pan. Okay. Now I'm
4:54
gonna take half a cup of chopped pecans, two teaspoons of cinnamon, and five tablespoons
5:02
of sugar I just gonna stir those together real good And now I just gonna take this mixture and sprinkle half of it around on that first layer So when we bite into this there gonna be a surprise in the center of our cake
5:25
Alright, that's perfect. Alright, now I'm just gonna come in with the rest of our batter
5:30
and scoop that evenly on top. This smells good already, and it's not even baking yet
5:42
All right, now I'm going to come in here, and I'm going to spread out our batter, and that looks good
5:48
Now I'm going to come in here with the rest of our mixture and sprinkle it on top
5:53
Now I'm going to put this in a 350-degree preheated oven, and I'm going to let it bake for about an hour
6:02
I have a hard time sometimes when I'm trying to decide what I want for breakfast
6:08
if I want to go sweet or savory, you know. Do I want waffles
6:13
I want pancakes. Do I want something sweet? So this morning, I'm going to have the best of both worlds
6:22
Definitely going to have that sweet. All right, this is time to go in the oven
6:26
When we come back, I'm going to show you a recipe that's going to perfectly balance the savory with our sweet
6:36
Plus, it's going to have our vegetables. We're going to make sure we have vegetables for breakfast, too
6:50
Welcome back, y'all. Look, you've caught me in my pajamas, and you want to know why
6:55
Because Michael and I are gonna have breakfast in bed this morning
6:59
and now I'm on to make spinach Gruyere puff pastry. I'm gonna start by sautéing a cup of sliced mushrooms
7:07
and two tablespoons of butter. You wouldn't think about eating mushrooms for breakfast
7:14
but it really, really is good. I'm gonna add a little salt
7:21
a little pepper, to go ahead and flavor up those mushrooms. And while these are sauteing
7:29
I'm going to take a 10-ounce package of frozen spinach. Now, you want to make sure spinach has a lot of water
7:37
You can see how much water has just dripped out voluntarily. Now, I'm going to just give it a squeeze with my spatula
7:47
just like that, and you can see all the water that's coming out
7:52
I think I may take a paper towel and just blot it with that to make sure I get out that extra moisture
8:01
I'm going to dump that over in there in another bowl. And these are coming along nicely
8:10
All right, now I'm going to pour this over into our spinach. Butter and all, and you can see I'm going to take that spatula and make sure I get every bit of that butter
8:22
that's in that pan. And I've got one cup of Gruyere cheese
8:34
And I'm just gonna mix that together. You wouldn't think about eating spinach for breakfast
8:43
but it really, really is good. All right. Now, I'm gonna brush our puff pastry with a little melted butter
9:02
This breakfast is sure gonna beat the heck out of a bowl of cereal. All right, now I'm gonna take our filling, and I'm gonna just spread it over our puff
9:16
pastry. You know, Michael and I are having this for breakfast, but this dish would also
9:24
make a wonderful hors d'oeuvre if you're having a cocktail party. This is a very versatile
9:30
dish. All right. Now we're going to take our pastry, and we're just going to start rolling
9:41
it, and we want to roll it fairly tight, and I think you're probably getting the idea of
9:49
what we're going to wind up with. Isn't that pretty? Pretty piece of dough. All right
9:59
now I'm going to come in here, and I'm going to cut that little end off because you can
10:03
see I didn't bring the filling all the way to the end, so I'm going to cut that off
10:07
and then I'm going to start slicing this into about quarter of an inch pieces, just like that
10:17
Now, if y'all want to really get ahead of the game, you can make this ahead and put this in the freezer
10:24
And then all you have to do is pull it out let it thaw for a minute and then finish it up So you can really enjoy your morning in bed
10:36
This is a great way to get vegetables in Michael. Because I have to tell you, when it's time for me to get the salads together and bowl them up
10:47
you know, he always says, no, I don't think I'm going to have salad, I'm on a diet
10:52
So this is a great way for me to sneak his vegetables in on him
10:59
because he can't resist that puff pastry. All right, I'm going to give it a little bitty squirt
11:05
It won't take much because there is so much butter in puff pastry already
11:10
Now I'm just going to lay these out on our sheet. So we're going to put these in the oven
11:20
a 350 degree oven, and we're gonna bake them for about 20 minutes
11:25
But in the meantime, I smell something that smells so good, and it's telling me that it's ready. So..
11:35
Whatcha think? Whatcha think about this cake? Lady Bird says she likes it
11:43
Look at that. And I'm just gonna sit that right there and let it cool for a minute
11:53
And we're gonna put in our pinwheels. Now I have another tray that should be ready
12:03
And they are. Look how good those look. And you can see what I mean when I tell you that these would make a wonderful appetizer at a cocktail party
12:16
Lady Bird's using the magic words. She just said, Mama. I'm going to give Lady Bird one of these too, because they'll be good for her, the spinach in it
12:32
These are a little warm. Look at these, they're so light
12:46
Look at the beautiful bottom, how brown it is. Mmm. Mmm. And the Gruyere cheese, it almost tastes like a cheese straw
13:00
Michael's gonna love them. But you know what? I've balanced our cinnamon cake with a savory
13:10
When we come back, I'm going back to something sweet. How about a pancake that you bake in the oven
13:18
Sounds pretty good, don't it? Mm-mm. Hey, welcome back, y'all
13:35
Now, our cake has cooled a little bit, and I'm going to bring it over here, and I'm going to turn it out onto my cake stand
13:45
and I'm just going to flip it and hope I hear it plop out
13:54
Yeah. Look how good that looks. But because it's got the pecans and the sugar on the other side
14:06
I think I'm going to turn it. There you go. I think this side's prettier, don't y'all
14:11
And I've got some beautiful pansies from my garden that I'm just going to garnish it with
14:19
And then I think I'm going to cut me just a little taste. I can test this and it'll just be all right
14:29
It won't hurt for one slice to be missing out of it. Oh, Cody
14:36
Come here, Cody. You want some cake? You want a bite of cake
14:44
Mm-mm-mm. Oh, Cody. This is wonderful. Y'all going to love it
14:54
Smear it with a little butter. It'll be over the top. Okay, y'all move on in here with me
15:03
because my next recipe I think y'all are going to like. I'm going to be making an oven-baked Dutch apple pancake
15:13
that we never have to pour out on a griddle and worry about is it going to turn out right
15:19
And I'm going to start by heating up a skillet. I'm gonna take two cans of apple pie filling
15:29
Do y'all know there's a lot of different variations to the pancake, depending on which country you're in
15:36
And I think the Dutch, quite often bake their pancakes in the oven and you can find all different varieties You can find savory pancakes
15:50
Quite often they make a tiny pancake, perhaps filled with a custard
15:56
that they serve for dessert. Now, to our apples and our butter
16:01
I'm gonna add one teaspoon of ground cinnamon cinnamon that's gonna add a nice little spice to our apples
16:11
Alright, now while that's heating, I'm gonna move down here and I'm gonna start making the batter
16:16
that's gonna form my pancake. And I'm gonna start with three eggs
16:21
I'm gonna just give those a quick little beat. And then I'm gonna add a half a cup of milk
16:27
and then I'm going to add one tablespoon of sour cream
16:39
All right, I'm going to add one teaspoon of lemon zest, and that's going to give it a nice little, just a little tart bite
16:52
and then I'm going to add one-half a cup of all-purpose flour
16:57
And this doesn't have to be totally smooth. You don't want to overbeat your pancake or your waffle batter
17:07
Now I'm going to come over here, and I'm going to pour it directly on top of those apples
17:14
Looking pretty good, isn't it, y'all? And I'm going to transfer our pancake to a baking sheet
17:22
just in case it spills over. I don't want a big old mess in my oven
17:34
Ooh, ooh, ooh. Okay. So I'm gonna gently walk this over to the oven
17:41
because you can see I got my pan really full, and it's heavy
17:46
My arms almost have the shakes it's so heavy. Ooh. Okay. All right
18:03
So in the oven that goes, and when we come back, just in case this dish hadn't been fast enough for you
18:10
I'm going to show you some breakfast tips that are even quicker
18:15
and a great way to start your day. So if you're short on time, come back
18:20
because I'm going to show you how to make up. There's nothing better in the morning than a smoked salmon mixed up in cream cheese with
18:35
some chopped onions and some capers. You can make a spread out of it and spread it on that nice fresh bagel
18:41
Or you can make beautiful little salmon roses and have all your condiments, your capers
18:46
your lemon juice, your onions, and just serve it right on top of your bagel
18:51
Now you can't get any faster than that. or more delicious. Oh, Michael
19:04
Breakfast served. Oh, gosh. Didn't that do good? Isn't that wonderful? Well, come on up here in the bed with me
19:14
and let's have some fun. Oh, my gracious. I don't know which I like the best, Michael
19:22
The baked pea and cake or the spice cinnamon cake. Are these delicious
19:29
Let me try one of these. Oh, gosh, they're so good. It's spinach and creyre
19:34
Mmm, that's delicious. It tastes like a cheese straw, doesn't it? Mm-hmm
19:39
But this is what I can't wait to dig into. And I think the Dutch may be on to something with this baked pancake
19:48
So much better than having to worry about flipping them and keeping them warm
19:56
You want some? You got that. Okay. Oh my gosh
20:10
It's out of this world. I can't hardly wait to finish breakfast in
20:18
and then go back to sleep. It's the best sleep in the world, isn't it? Mm-hmm
20:25
This is just a great start to a wonderful weekend, isn't it
20:30
And I hope that one weekend y'all will take the time and let it be a great start for y'all
20:36
Mm. Breakfast in bed with the person you love and the pancakes you love the most
20:42
So, Michael and I wish y'all best dishes from our bedroom to yours
