0:00
'cause I want to show y'all a recipe
0:01
that was sent to me from one of my guests
0:04
that had come into the restaurant.
0:05
Her name is Carol Rudd.
0:07
So she has sent me the recipe
0:09
for Mae Dawson's Hoosier Sugar Cream Pie.
0:14
It's nothing but sweetened whipped cream,
0:19
sugar like a cup and a third of sugar.
0:26
about three quarters of a cup of milk
0:38
So we're just gonna give that a stir.
0:41
People send me recipes all the time
0:43
and I can't tell you how much I love it.
0:48
Now we're gonna pour this
0:48
into a nine inch unbaked pie shell.
0:52
Now you can make your own crust
0:54
or you can just use the frozen one like I'm doing.
0:57
And because we're doing simple desserts today,
1:01
I opted to go with the frozen crust.
1:03
'Cause we wanna make this quick and easy.
1:08
All right, now I've got some butter here
1:11
and I'm just gonna kind of pinch it up
1:14
and just drop it all over the pie.
1:17
I'm doing it just like Carol says she does it.
1:22
And now I'm gonna just grate it with a little nutmeg.
1:27
And this almost makes it tastes like an egg custard pie.
1:32
There's nothing like fresh nutmeg.
1:36
It's so much better than the ground kind
1:39
that you buy at the store.
1:41
All right, now I'm gonna put this
1:42
into a 450 degree oven
1:45
and I'm gonna let it bake for about 10 minutes.
1:48
And then we're gonna turn the oven down to 350
1:51
and let it cook another 25 minutes.
1:54
And it's gonna be a little jiggly.
1:55
So you'll want to be careful
1:58
when you put it in your oven.
2:01
Woo gotta have a steady hand.
2:11
I've already baked another one
2:12
and I've got it sitting right here
2:14
and it should be nice and cooled.
2:17
It's just a wee little bit warm,
2:21
I think we can go ahead and cut it.
2:24
Now I'd like to show y'all a little trick
2:26
that I use when I'm cutting pies.
2:28
'Cause you can sometimes mess it up,
2:30
trying to get it out.
2:31
So I'm gonna show you
2:32
how I like to get that very first piece out
2:36
but course if it messes up that's all right too,
2:38
'cause then that makes it legal to eat
2:41
before the family gets to it.
2:43
Now some people like their pies cut in eighths.
2:47
Some people like their pies cut into sixths.
2:50
I don't have to tell you what we do at my house.
2:52
So all I'm gonna do with these scissors
2:55
is I'm gonna come in here
2:57
and I'm going to snip right through that foil.
3:01
So you can see that the pie just kind of slips away.
3:05
And that makes it easy for me to just slip right in
3:10
and lift down that piece of pie. Yum.
3:14
It looks great, doesn't it?
3:16
And you know I don't even
3:17
have any fresh whipped cream to serve on it.
3:19
So you know what I think I'm gonna do.
3:22
I had some custard leftover from those pears.
3:26
I'm gonna come over here
3:28
and I think I'm gonna get
3:29
just a little bit of that.
3:33
And get me a couple of cherries go in here.
3:37
We'll use a little piece of mint on it too.
3:40
Just to make me feel like I'm eating my vegetables.
3:44
Look how pretty that looks.
3:51
Oh, Carol, this looks so good.
3:59
