0:03
Now, I've just taken my first apple pie out of the oven,
0:06
and I'm gonna sit it here in the window and let it cool.
0:09
And if y'all will come back into the kitchen,
0:11
'cause I wanna show you how easy it was
0:14
to make America's favorite pie, the apple pie.
0:19
Mm, I wish y'all were here to smell
0:21
how delicious that pie smells.
0:24
You can have you one in the oven just in a jiffy.
0:27
I'm gonna start by using Rome apples,
0:30
and I'm gonna squeeze about
0:33
a tablespoon of lemon juice over them
0:36
to just keep them from turning dark.
0:39
And I'm gonna use about 3/4 a cup of sugar,
0:46
and to that we're gonna add one tablespoon of flour,
0:54
and some ground cinnamon.
0:58
And we're just gonna stir that up.
1:00
One of my buddies, her name's Julia Christian,
1:04
she gave me this recipe.
1:05
She said, "Paula, you gotta try this.
1:06
"This is just my favorite of all the apple pies."
1:08
And I did and I love it,
1:11
because we actually put applesauce in it,
1:13
which makes it so good.
1:15
So, we're gonna toss our apples into our sugar and flour,
1:21
and get those apples nice and coated with that sugar.
1:24
Ooh, I can smell the lemon and the cinnamon.
1:28
All right, now we're just gonna add our applesauce,
1:31
which really is just a little different
1:34
from your ordinary apple pie.
1:37
We're just gonna give that a little stir.
1:40
Doesn't that look yummy?
1:41
All right, I'm gonna let that sit there a minute,
1:43
because I wanna talk to you about your pie crust.
1:46
You probably hear me saying all the time
1:49
I really love the refrigerated dough.
1:52
Now I've taken one section
1:55
and I have put it in our pie plate.
1:58
And you see I'm using a deep pie plate
2:01
for the apple pie today.
2:04
And we're just gonna take that
2:06
and pour it into the raw crust,
2:09
'cause this is gonna bake long enough
2:10
for your crust to actually get done on you.
2:14
Gonna just make sure that applesauce
2:16
is distributed all around there.
2:20
And I'm gonna dot it with some butter.
2:22
Just season up those apples just a little bit.
2:27
Okay, now, we're gonna put a lattice crust on this pie,
2:32
and it's so very simple.
2:34
We're gonna take an extra round of dough.
2:37
Now this is on parchment paper so it won't stick on me.
2:40
Now I'm gonna take my knife,
2:42
and I'm gonna run it down into my flour,
2:44
so the dough won't stick to our knife.
2:49
I'm just gonna cut us some strips.
2:51
Now if you like wide lattice, you can cut them wide.
2:55
If you like a narrow lattice, you can cut them more narrow.
2:59
All right, so we're gonna start
3:01
with the outside of our circle.
3:03
And I'm gonna use five strips.
3:06
Now latticing is very, very simple.
3:10
I'm gonna pull every other strip back,
3:13
and lay a piece of crust in there,
3:15
and then fold that back over.
3:17
So you see I've got three strips under, two strips over.
3:22
All I'm gonna do now is take
3:23
the three strips that are under,
3:28
and come in there with another piece.
3:30
Bring them back over,
3:31
and then do the same thing again with another strip.
3:35
It looks like it might be hard, but it's not at all.
3:39
And we have a latticed pie crust.
3:42
Now I'm gonna come in and just take the edges
3:45
and trim them up to fit our plate.
3:47
Now before we put that in the oven,
3:49
we are gonna make a crunch topping for it.
3:52
It's very, very simple to do.
3:54
We're gonna take some flour,
3:58
some sugar, and just a pinch of salt,
4:05
and then we're gonna cut in some butter.
4:07
Then till it's kind of crumbly,
4:09
just like we were making biscuits.
4:13
And then we're gonna come over here,
4:15
and just sprinkle this on top of our pie.
4:18
All right, now we're gonna slip this into the over
4:20
which has been preheated to 425 degrees.
4:23
We're gonna let it bake for about 10 minutes,
4:25
and then we're gonna lower the temperature to 350.
4:28
But this one in the window should be ready
4:31
for you and me to taste.
4:41
And you know, I don't believe
4:43
that we can have a piece of apple pie
4:46
without some vanilla ice cream.
4:47
So you see I got my scoop right ready.
4:50
But I'm gonna go ahead and cut into this one,
4:53
and get it on the plate.
4:55
And while I'm getting this ready,
4:57
I'm wanna tell you how Southerners love their apple pie.
5:01
When I was a little girl and my mother would make apple pies
5:04
she would always pull out the cheddar cheese, grate that,
5:08
put it on top of the slice of apple pie,
5:10
and run it under the broiler.
5:12
And we would have cheese topped apple pie
5:16
that was so delicious.
5:22
But I'm gonna serve this first piece with vanilla ice cream.
5:28
Doesn't that look good?
5:29
You can see all that applesauce oozing out of there.
5:39
Y'all think I got me enough ice cream?
5:41
I hope this is gonna work out right.
5:48
Oh, doesn't that just look yummy?
5:55
It is too good and too simple.
