Hey y'all, this is Paula's Potluck
0:09
You know, you get invited to a friend's house and they say you've got to bring something
0:13
and you wonder what you're going to bring. This is a perfect dish, especially for the summertime
0:17
This is baked beans, but it's not your mama's baked beans. It's my mama's baked beans
0:22
And this is also an integral part to another recipe that I'm going to share with you while
0:27
I'm waiting on these onions to cook. The first thing, my pan's hot. I'm going to put down about two tablespoons of oil
0:33
and we're going to cut these onions up, and I'm just going to cut them kind of big
0:36
because I want to brown these off, and then we're going to add the rest of the ingredients
0:41
So I'm going to cut these up into little cubes and get them into our oil. It wasn't too long ago
0:47
I don't know. I can't remember where I was, but I had found an old copy of Southern Living
0:52
It might have been at the doctor's office or something, but it was old, like early 80s
0:57
It had a barbecue cocktail in it, y'all. The bottom two or three inches was baked beans And on top of that you add two inches of pulled pork And on top of that you add two inches of coleslaw and you stick a pickle spear in the top of it and it a barbecue cocktail
1:20
Doesn't that sound awesome? So if you have any of this leftover from your potluck dinner
1:24
you can make yourself a barbecue cocktail at the house. So I'm going to give these onions just a
1:29
couple of minutes to sweat it out. My mama always puts at least two things in her baked beans and
1:35
brown sugar and yellow mustard. If it's not brown sugar and yellow mustard in the baked beans
1:39
they're not baked beans. This is just a can of beans that we have. This isn't seasoned. You know
1:44
you can buy them practically full prepared at the store, but these are just plain ones
1:48
because I want to put my own flavor in this. And if my mama was standing here next to me
1:54
she'd say, Sonny boy, where's your bacon? Mama likes to put bacon in hers, but for today
2:00
We're gonna keep it really simple and just a handful of ingredients. I've got a jar of diced tomatoes
2:07
that we're gonna add to my tomatoes, and I got my onions
2:13
I'm gonna give these one second to kinda cook together. You don have to cook these all the way through because we are gonna bake them Okay y I got my tomatoes and my onions going I wanna salt these tomatoes and onions
2:27
and some pepper. Now the black pepper and this brown sugar is gonna work magic together
2:34
I'm gonna add my beans. I've got two teaspoons of brown sugar
2:47
and one tablespoon of yellow mustard. So I want to make sure and get my brown sugar and mustard all worked well through this
3:06
You can buy baked beans in the can that says that it's already been seasoned, or it's home style, or it's beefy style, or pepper style, or whatever
3:15
They're all well and good, but when you can get your own baked beans at the house, put
3:20
fresh ingredients in them and cook them yourself, I promise you it'll taste better than anything
3:24
that you can get out of a can. And I not going to cook this down a whole lot because it going in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes I going to leave it covered for about 15 or 20 minutes and I going to uncover it for the last 15 or 20 and let it brown off real nice on the top So I got my casserole dish here We going straight in
3:48
And that's it, y'all. I'm going covered for the first 15 at 350
3:52
and when I pull the cover off for the last 15 minutes
3:58
that's what gives us this nice, finished, crispy top on it, and that's my favorite
4:03
Carry these to your potluck, and remember, with any leftovers that you have
4:08
you can make yourself a barbecue casserole. So here's your potluck bean, y'all
4:17
Oh, my gosh. It tastes so good. you may not have leftovers, but if you do
4:24
look for my barbecue cocktail recipe here on the network and you'll know what to do with your leftover beans
4:30
They're good for your heart. And the more you eat, the more you like them
