It was this contest on the Food Network that generated thousands and thousands of tapes

Homeowners from across the country sent us tapes claiming to have the worst kitchens ever

Kitchens in desperate need of a makeover. All-star kitchen makeover, can you help us

We looked through each and every one of those tapes and closely examined all of the applications worthy of a complete overhaul

Well, here's what we've got to work with. My cameras are too high for me. I'm short

Kitchen on top of kitchen qualified. I think they say new kitchen, new kitchen

Four winners would get new kitchens. They'd be chosen from across the country and paired with their favorite Food Network celebrity who would help in the design of a brand new kitchen

Emeril Lagasse, Alton Brown, Bobby Flay, and Paula Deen jumped on board to help in this all-star kitchen makeover

Finally, in the batch of thousands, a couple of newlyweds in need caught our attention

They just purchased their first house ever. As you can see, we're here, and we're eagerly adding our own personal touches

But those personal touches couldn't disguise Shelly and Brian Brower's 100-year-old dilapidated kitchen

Our kitchen, as you can see, is an obvious disaster. The stove is all by its own so over here

The sink is all the way over here. And yet even further away is the refrigerator

We obviously need more counter space. Difficult to make even a simple omelet

There's also so little storage, I don't know where we're going to put everything

As much as I would miss the faux brick laminated floor. And I think those are strawberries on the border

In other words, the kitchen doesn't work, and what Shelly and Brian really want is a kitchen in keeping with the house

They want a country farmhouse kitchen. So we found their perfect match

the Food Network celebrity chef who can truly define and design country

for this couple in need. Shelly and Brian have been married a little over a year

They left the Florida Keys when Shelly accepted a job with the Mystic Aquarium as a sea lion trainer

Brian's an architectural draftsman and carpenter. He joined on with a local construction company and immediately began building homes in Mystic

Back at his house, things aren't so dreamy. The 100-year-old house needs a lot of repairs, the kitchen included

When the house was built, the space wasn't designed to support a modern-day kitchen

Limited storage. Bad lighting. Faulty plumbing. Outdated appliances. And a slew of structural problems came with Brian and Shelly's purchase

Goodbye from the Browers. Goodbye. So the dream of owning a country farmhouse with a beautiful and workable country kitchen in it

was a wish Paula Deen could easily grant. So y'all don't go anywhere

After all, Paula's Food Network show, Paula's Home Cooking, takes place in a country kitchen

that's good batter her exquisite taste and reputation as a quintessential country cook

gives her all the qualifications to help Brian and Shelly in her mind, they are all star kitchen

Whoa. After surprising Shelly at the Mystic Aquarium, the two head over to find Brian on the job

making improvements to somebody else's home. You've always heard the expression, the cobbler's children have no shoes

Brian works for a construction company, so he's always building homes, and nice kitchens for everybody else, except for himself

Paula's about to find out that not even she can rattle Shelly's low-key husband. Brian

Brian! Hey! How are you? How are you? I'm Paula Deen. I know you are

I knew that when we surprised Brian that he was going to kind of be in shock

but that he was really excited as well, that he just, you know, this is what we were hoping for

She knows country, and our house is a nice little country cottage

I think it was a perfect match. The first step to fulfilling Shelly and Brian's dream

is to tear down the old kitchen and create a blank canvas for the new one

With the site primed and ready to go, Paula drops by to check in on her work in progress

What do y'all envision for this room? How do you want it used

I'd like to see something aesthetically pleasing just from, you know, the pretty point of view

But being more the cook of the family, I want something that's functionally going to work well

So Shelly wants it beautiful. You want it workable. I want it workable, exactly

That's exactly it. So I think we can do that. But there's one major detail Paula has to know in order to proceed

Tell me what your favorite color is. One of my favorite colors is blue. Is it

Uh-huh. I like blue, too. It's kind of a country color, isn't it

town and the opportunity for employment is what attracted Shelly and Brian Brower

We spent pretty much everything we have on the house. That's why Shelly entered this contest on the Food Network

We obviously need more counter space. Hoping to get Brian a brand new kitchen

There are some things that you would love the person to have, and you can't give it to them

And I knew I couldn't give Brian this fabulous, wonderful kitchen. What Shelly and Brian needed was the one Food Network celebrity who could answer their cry for help

The kitchen's the heartbeat of the home. Paula's expertise would allow her to oversee the making of a country kitchen in keeping with Brian and Shelly's 100-year-old farmhouse

I'm here to help you with your kitchen. So she set out to grant them what they both wanted so desperately, an all-star kitchen makeover

I'm just thrilled that they won. Within days, the demolition begins on this century-old space

And once the canvas is blank, Paula can begin to work her magic. Anything worth having is worth a little work

Years ago, while living in Savannah, Georgia, Paula leaned on her southern cooking skills to support herself and her two sons

She created a home-based lunch delivery service called The Bag Lady. She cooked. Her two boys, Jamie and Bobby, delivered

Eventually, they opened the door to their very own restaurant, The Lady and Sons

Soon, cookbooks were launched along with their popular Food Network television show, Paula's Home Cooking

In other words, this little Southern Dynamo fails at nothing. Great credentials for an all-star kitchen makeover

For that makeover to be successful, Paula meets with Shelly and Brian to get a firm understanding of the couple's needs

So Shelly wants it beautiful. You want it workable. I want it workable, exactly

So I think we can do that. Now, it's a matter of getting the kitchen's contractor on the same page

You know, this is the back door when they come in. They want a place to just kind of hang their hat

And I'd really like to see her with an island. If the Center Island surprises Shelly, Paula's got another special touch up her sleeve

The aquarium, I think, really, really needs to be there. I think she'd get a kick

Yeah, I think that would just be a nice surprise for her. Yeah, she'd flip over that

Yeah. So here are just a few of the features Paula has in mind for Shelly and Brian's kitchen

Custom cabinets to give the newlyweds added storage. A Center Island topped with one of the world's most unique granites

a handcrafted piece for Shelly and Brian to hang their coats, and a cast iron stove to create the authentic feel of a true farmhouse kitchen

This is a rather small kitchen, so we've got to make every inch of space work in here

Shelly and Brian move into a rental house as construction on their own moves into high gear

Paula sets out to get better acquainted with the little town of Mystic. Now that was more the size I was thinking of

on a shopping spree for her all-star kitchen makeover winners. How cute are they? I adore that wreath

Unfortunately, but not too often, our celebrity chef loses focus on whose kitchen she's shopping for

Maybe it's my kitchen they're perfect for. I'll take these right here, please

But eventually, gets back on track. Oh, gosh. Paula's designing for a country-style kitchen

But being that she's a little unpredictable by nature, she wants to add some unexpected elements to the space

like this stained glass chandelier. Paula likes that the colors are in keeping with what's to come

Wrap it up, girl. I'm not looking any further. I think that's perfect. Last and certainly not least

a final gift for the one applicant Paula would never ignore. I just love my dogs, y'all

And Brian and Shelly probably don't realize what a big part their dog played in them getting this kitchen makeover

So he deserves something good, too. And I've got just the perfect gift for him, and I can't hardly wait to get it in the kitchen

A kitchen that's quickly taking shape from the floor up. The dining room has this pine plank flooring, so we're going to go ahead and extend that look into the new kitchen

To make it even more authentic, we're going to use these antique nails with a rosebud head

Throw some stain on there, and it'll look like it always existed. Paula wants Shelly and Brian's kitchen to feel spacious, so light-colored cabinets, much like the ones on her own show, are a must

She chooses a soft, buttery cream cabinet color to accent the counters and the stove she selected

Doors with glass inserts will make the room feel more open. The corners are carefully sanded to give them a weathered, antique look

A glaze provides depth and dimension. A drab corner at Shelly and Brian's will be fitted with a handcrafted piece for coats and hats

In a kitchen influenced by Paula Deen, every inch of space has to be special and reflect the people who live there

Shelly really loves what she does. And what Paula wanted to do was actually incorporate some of Shelly's passion into the kitchen

So is it possible to take something like this and bring it down into this

Peter, absolutely. We can take anything that you can imagine and make it to scale

Nowadays, it's very common to have a fish tank in the kitchen because it's so soothing

It's this place where you spend most of your time. Is it possible to get the fish to actually match what we have in the kitchen

Luckily, Mother Nature supplies us with an abundance of colors for fish

I mean, so anything that, you know, you could imagine that's out for colors on tiles or floors or ceilings

we can pretty much match it with the type of fish. So in just a matter of days, Paula will see to it that a little bit of the seaport town

While the All-Star Kitchen Makeover contest winners are busy at work, a construction crew has invaded their home to give them the kitchen of their dreams

The inspiration behind it all? Food Network's celebrity chef, Paula Deen. When I was playing in my own kitchen, it was important that everything had a rhyme and reason

that it functioned and everything flowed very, very well. I could go from one piece of equipment to the other without doing a whole bunch of walking

Since the area is so small in the Browers farmhouse, every inch of space counts

Paula takes that into account to accommodate for the cast iron oven she chose that's similar to the one on her cooking show

She knew it would be a perfect fit for this country kitchen. This is it And 60 little pieces we going to put this thing together You ready Some assembly required

The whole oven is made out of cast iron, so it stays one uniform temperature

Wow. Always on. Always on. It's never hot enough on the outside to burn you

but it's just warm to the touch, and it's covered in enamel

Fantasy kitchens don't happen overnight. That's evident when the stove alone takes an entire day to assemble

But the goal here is to make dreams come true no matter what it takes

I would most like to see an island in the kitchen when I walk in

With the center island in, it's time to top it off. Paula likes natural stone surfaces

She chose soapstone for her own kitchen. But I have to tell y'all, if you choose that for your counters, it scratches

That's why Paula chose granite for Shelly and Brian's kitchen. It's a rare granite called Brazilian Blue Bahia

Paula has excellent taste. This is one of the more exotic stones that we carry, and we have over 350 colors of stone to choose from

Of those colors, two were chosen. Blue Bahia for the center island and..

This is white honey granite. It's from Sri Lanka. Paula picked this for the perimeter of the kitchen

Granite is one of the best surfaces used for a kitchen countertop

Fabulous for cooking. Paula wants a touch of elegance incorporated into the granite

She chose a fleur-de-lis because it's a symbol of perfection, light, and life

The ideal design for the foundation of this kitchen, reinforcing Paula's wish that this couple have a long and happy life together

It's here to stay. While the countertops are going in, Paula, Shelly, and Brian take a trip to Mystic Pizza

It was the setting for the hit movie starring Julia Roberts. Now, another pretty woman is about to combine her southern roots with this northern eatery

in the hope of giving her winning couple a memorable recipe to take back to their new kitchen

How about collard green pizza? You like collard greens? Sure. Collard greens

These were shipped up from the Lady and Sons restaurant in Savannah. So look in here

Have y'all ever eaten? You've eaten collard greens. I have. You're from Charleston, Brian

How are we going to get this ham hawk out of here? I don't even know what the hawk of a ham is

Shelly's soon to find out it's the tasty lower portion of the hog's hind leg

Just pull one out? Uh-huh, just pull one out and taste it. I want no very big taste

I can taste it. She's from Minnesota, so collard greens and ham hocks

are a completely foreign country for her. Instead of marinara, we're going to start out

with a cream cheese and mayonnaise base. How long y'all been married

How does that taste? A taste test from Brian reveals that something's missing

Paula Deen envisions for the space. The next addition, hand-painted tiles with elegant country themes on them

The subject is sketched on the piece of tile and then painted. The very fine brush, I take the black paint and I go around the entire design itself

but very delicately. It adds real punch, real definition, and it makes a dramatic difference

And you started your business out of that house? That's where we were. It's going to be right there. The tour wouldn't be complete without dropping by the church where their mother got married

This is it. It's beautiful. Yeah. Isn't it pretty? This is where Mom's wedding was

They had archways of flowers built up down the walkway. They had all the lights set up outside

these windows that was just coming through here. So Brian, it was beautiful. From Paula's past to Paula's present

it's time to introduce Brian to the Lady and Sons. Guests are not exempt from work

With his failing grade, Brian is relocated to something a little less challenging

Let's see. Two ends. Okay, if you'd like to leave your address for the complaint

it's a customer on there when they give that. I'll pour that on to you. Do you enjoy the construction business

I do. Good. Good. Brian is given a final duty. I'd like to add that these are low-fat, as with everything

practicing for the day he'll serve homemade meals to shelly in their brand new kitchen

paula's wish to create a farmhouse kitchen with elements that reflect both brian and shelly has

almost become a reality an extra touch of local flair will accomplish her goal that's why paula

turns to gary anderson a renowned wood carver and mystic gary recreated the ornament that sits at

the bow of the replicated slave ship the amistad the eagle is a plaster uh model that i used to do

the carving from, and that's about half the size. The final version was six feet long. That's about

three feet long. His expertise makes him the ideal candidate to create a cutting board for

Shelly and Brian's kitchen. The board is inspired by an existing antique. To make something like that

more personal for Brian and Shelly, it would have to have something that meant something to them

in this case the sea lions around the outside. It's kind of like an extended yin-yang, which is a lot

of them. It's a cool project on a lot of different levels in that I've never worked on sea lions

before. My family and I went to the Mystic Aquarium with the idea that I'd do a little

research on what sea lions look like because like most people I had a vague idea but if you put a

seal next to a sea lion I wouldn't have known the difference. After extensive on-the-job research

Gary sets out to create a cutting board unlike any other. I started doing a clay model because clay

If you go right into the wood, wood's expensive, it's hard to work with. Clay is forgiving

The artistry for Gary is in the details. When you do something like this where each one is being hand carved

none of them is going to come out exactly the same anyway. And they're all going to have their own personality

When Gary finishes the board, it will be stained and coated in a salad oil

to last Shelly and Brian a lifetime. I'm hoping that the cutting board is actually something that would mean something to them

They would want their kitchen personalized. They want it to be a piece of them, not just like every other kitchen

That's Brian's concern. It's my major concern, a curtain under my sink. I don't want a frilly, poofy curtain under my sink

No roosters. No strawberries. What else? No baskets hanging from the ceiling, hopefully

Those are all things that you would hate if you got into the kitchen and you saw a rooster or a basket

Yeah, we have complete faith that she's done a good job on our kitchen. Yes. Shelly and Brian have thanked me several times for coming in and helping them

It's been such a wonderful experience. And it's so much fun to give

Truly is. I think just walking in the kitchen itself and seeing just in my mind's eye, I have what it was

and to replace it with something that I can't even imagine. I mean, I can't even imagine what it's going to look like
